Dead Cells

People seem to be enjoying roguelike-ish, Metroidvania-esque platformer Dead Cells, and if you count yourself among their number, perhaps because you got a whopping saving on the game a few days ago, you might be pleased to hear that it's just received a new update that adds a brand new, mysterious biome, and more.

The 'Hello Darkness' update whacks in that new biome, of which developer Motion Twin is being enigmatically, mysteriously cagey: "Some say it will get you nowhere but six feet under… But IF you know your way around like a dog knows its bone, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it!" Well, alright then. Cheers.

There are also two new monsters added to the early access Dead Cells, along with tweaks to the economy, additional weapons, and changes to the way the island setting links together. You can read the full patch notes here.

Dead Cells - Messbass

Hello people,

No nasty “out of memory” type bug has been able to stop us from updating Dead Cells this time! Although we’ve put the week of beta to good use, tweaking the new biome's; mechanics, monsters, weapons and level design with pretty much a patch per day. Today, we’re pushing the latest version to the standard branch for everyone to try it out and let us know what they think.

What’s new:
  • A new biome: Some say it will get you nowhere but six feet under… But IF you know your way around like a dog knows its bone, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it!
  • The Island has changed quite a bit. Connections between levels aren’t necessarily the same, have fun figuring all that out again (... until the next update).
  • Two news monsters: kill first, ask questions later.
  • New weapons!
  • Many changes to the economy system: you can’t buy ALL the things now.
  • Automatic installation of a language mod in your language if one exists. You can still choose to play in English via the options.
  • Promenade got a bit more variety.
  • As usual, tons of balancing.
You can see all the changes here.

OST available on steam!

Also we've finally got the OST by Valmont available on Steam... Better late than never! So, if you already own the game or buy both the OST and the game in a bundle, you can get the OST for 3€. The OST isn’t complete yet, but you will get every additional song even if you buy it now. You can also buy the OST on bandcamp if you prefer here.

Interview with RPS:
While you're here, Seb (our lead designer/dev) and Steve (marketing bastard) did a little interview with the guys from Rock Paper Shotgun, which you can listen to over here (skip to 34:30).

We hope you will enjoy these little new additions to the game! As usual, don't hesitate to tell us what you think on the steam forums.

Take care!

Jingle jingle, it’s the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show. This week we discuss the ongoing Steam summer sale and bare our respective piles of shame. Editor-at-arms Graham also joins us to talk about spelunking roguelike Caveblazers, while Pip takes on the free-to-play Orcs Must Die! Unchained and Brendan marches on with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

But wait! There’s also an interview with the creators of “roguevania” Dead Cells, and we take some questions from listeners too. But most importantly, we introduce some extra jingles from our music man, Jack. Come and listen, educate yourself.

Dead Cells

Dead Cells is still in Steam's Early Access right now, but people apparently already love it. It's cheaper than normal to get in on the action today, as you can get the game for 31 percent off at Bundle Stars

Dead Cells is a Metroidvania-style 2D game with Rogue-like elements and some light Souls-y combat. While it's not bringing anything particularly new to the table, from what Shaun played, what it does, it does well. If you don't want to risk buying an Early Access game just yet, Dead Cells seems as though it'll be worth keeping an eye on.

The sale on Bundle Stars takes 27 percent off the price, and you can enter the code RED5 at checkout for an extra little bit of money off. It's also discounted in the Steam Summer Sale, however you only get 15 percent off on the main store.

Some online stores give us a small cut if you buy something through one of our links. Read our affiliate policy for more info.

The Steam summer sale is in full blaze. For a while it even blazed so hot that the servers went on fire and all the price stickers peeled off the games. Either that or the store just got swamped with cheapskates looking for the best bargains. Cheapskates like you! Well, don t worry. We ve rounded up some recommendations – both general tips and some newly added staff choices.

Here are the things you should consider owning in your endless consumeristic lust for a happiness which always seems beyond reach. You’re welcome.

Hey there!

Update round 2, fight! You can switch to the beta branch right now if you like and get your hands on the latest update... A new level!

Just remember that you can't use your save files from the beta in the stable branch, so feel free to back them up if you want (instructions here).

What's new?
  • The major feature of this update is the new level. I'm not going to tell you what it's called or where it is, as things have changed and I think you're going to have fun poking around looking for it!
  • As mentioned the level structure has been vastly changed, so some things aren't where they used to be... This means we've also changed the balancing of a lot of the levels.
  • Two new enemies, who are just dying to kill you... Have fun learning those patterns!
  • New weapons, including the famous kicks that I've been trolling you with on Twitter...
  • More choice at the merchants. 5 items instead of 4.
  • Automatic installation of a language mod in your language if one exists. You can still choose to play in English via the options.
  • Extra level chunks for the Promenade of the Condemned.
  • Shield Iframes nerf. We're planning on doing another big rework of the shield soon, so this is more of a hotfix...
  • Tons of nerfing, balancing and changes to weapons, monsters and whatnot.
  • If you really want the fine details you can see them here.

Let us know what you think!

Steve & the Motion Twin team.

Hello everyone,

Just a quick word to keep you on the loop. With most of the major crashes related to the Elemental Update fixed, the majority of the team got back to creating content.

We have several surprises coming up for you, the main one being obviously the new biome. This one is quite different from the others, but it's something we wanted to try since the early days of Dead Cells, so we're super stoked to finally be implementing it.

This update that will come the usual round of balancing, bug fixing, and exploit killing. The update should be hopefully available on the beta branch this week or early next week at the very latest. Can't wait to hear your feedback!

So long fellas!
