Monster Hunter World: Iceborne had a rocky release last week, with reports coming in that when PC players were jumping into the expansion there was a chance the game might delete their save files. This, paired with general performance issues, is obviously a very bad way for DLC to start its life on a new platform, but Capcom have announced that fixes are on the way.
Yesterday, they published some patch pre-release info, reassuring us that the fixes will be released “in the coming days” – but warning players to be careful with their save data in the meantime.
Last week saw the long-awaited arrival of Monster Hunter World's Iceborne expansion on PC, but, for some, it wasn't quite the cause for celebration it should have been. Players soon began to report significant performance issues following Iceborne's installation, and, more troublingly, missing save games. Now, publisher Capcom says a fix for both is due in the coming days.
Shortly after launch, Capcom took to Twitter to acknowledge Iceborne's performance problems - which, according to reports, ranged from plummeting frame rates to constant freezing - telling players that it was "currently investigating". It seems those investigations are now complete; in a new post to Steam, the publisher says it's uncovered an issue with Iceborne resulting in an "unusually high level of CPU utilisation during active gameplay".
It has also confirmed player suspicions that save game problems stemmed from a previous Monster Hunter World update that adjusted file formats. If players had failed to download the update prior to installing Iceborne, existing saves would no longer be recognised.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a big success for Capcom on PC, but it hasn't been an entirely smooth ride. Players have complained about performance problems, issues with matchmaking, and worst of all, a tendency to erase saves—a potentially maddening loss for a game that can easily eat up hundreds of hours of playtime.
Capcom acknowledged the problems today on Twitter, where it announced the upcoming release of a patch intended to address Iceborne's "unusually high level of CPU utilization during active gameplay," as well as the issue with incompatible saved games.
The Steam announcement concerning lost saves confirms that the problem is by a change made in the October 2018 update that added Kulve Taroth to the game. Capcom said that players impacted by the problem should shut down the game when they receive the "Failed to read saved data for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Create new save data?" warning.
Unfortunately, there's no indication of a possible fix for players who have already pushed the "Y" button. My guess is that with the data already erased, the only options are to carry on with the new game, or use something like the MHWSaveTransfer utility and Iceborne Ready save file to get straight into the Iceborne expansion.
The patch is expected to be out "in the coming days," although a solid date hasn't been set yet.
Monster Hunter World was already Capcom's best-selling game in history, and things seem to just keep getting better, as the game's Iceborne expansion has now shipped over 4m copies worldwide.
The major paid expansion, released on 6th September last year, aimed to give high-level players further endgame content - and has been favourably received by both the community and critics. Initially released on consoles, the 4m figure was achieved as a result of Iceborne's PC release on 9th January - which Capcom says allowed it to "appeal to a wider fan base spread across a greater number of regions."
To cap it all off, the expansion seems to have given another boost to Monster Hunter World's total sales, which have steadily grown from 7.9m in May 2018, to around 13m in September 2019, and now 15m as of January 2020: once again raising Capcom's sales record.
As there are plenty of new beasties to hunt in Monster Hunter World Iceborne, you will be able to harvest them to obtain ingredients required to make the new Master Rank weapons. It’s not just the new monsters either, as every single monster has a Master Rank equivalent and that means new parts. But how do you make them? (more…)
It’s perhaps unsurprising that the new monsters in Monster Hunter World Iceborne yield brand new parts to combine into the brand new Master Rank armor.
