Monster Hunter: World

One of the joys of last year's Monster Hunter World was how it introduced a whole new audience to the charms of Capcom's long-running series - that delicious loop of combat, conquest and then popping back home to craft a new set of trousers out of whatever giant beast you just felled so you can go back out to the wilds and do it all over again. There's another part of that loop, though, that's just as essential to it all - the part where you're humbled by a new beast that appears at the top of the food chain, and the part where you lick your wounds and make plans about how to exact your revenge and craft some new trousers as proof of your abilities.

Humbled? Actually, maybe that should be humiliated, which would be a more fitting a term for lapsed players like myself getting to grips with the opening hours of the forthcoming Iceborne expansion. You'll need to have completed the main campaign and reached Hunter Rank 16 to step foot on the new landmass the expansion introduces - called Hoarfrost Reach, it's out beyond a chilled ocean to the north west of the existing map - and even then you'll need to have polished off your skills. The first scrap you have, against the all-new beast Beotodus, can get pretty serious.

And so you'll be turning the air blue well before Hoarfrost Reach's chill air turns your fingers azure, because Beotodus is an absolute bastard. With an appearance like the chilled-out cousin of Cephadrome, he's a snow shark - a snow shark! - who speeds along underneath the tundra, his fin tearing through as a tell of his presence. So yeah, Beotodus is mostly concealed, has a hell of a hide and to make things even more entertaining to deal the most damage you'll have to get him to expose his hindlegs. It's a little on the tricky side.

It's looking a bit grey outside today, but that hasn't stopped the Green Man Gaming Summer Sale from getting underway with a range of savings across over 2000 titles big and small.

A quick search through some of the included games shows that there's a pretty good offering from Capcom in the Summer Sale. One of their best deals is on beast-slaying RPG Monster Hunter World for 22.50 - that's reduced even further from the original sale price to a whopping 55 per cent off. With the Iceborne expansion on the way later this winter (sadly a few months later on PC compared to the console release), now's a good time to get yourself all prepared for any new threats that await.

Meanwhile, you can also get both the stellar remake of Resident Evil 2 or the latest demon-slaying antics of Dante and company in Devil May Cry 5 for under 30 each. Seeing this trio of excellent games together just emphasises how Capcom is on such a roll lately, and each is well worth your time.

There may still be a few months to go until the release of Monster Hunter World's snow-themed Iceborne expansion, but that hasn't stemmed the flow of information spewing out from Capcom's enthusiastic maw. And we now have a whole bunch of new details to ponder over, courtesy of Iceborne's latest trailer and developer diary.

For long-time Monster Hunter fans, perhaps the most exciting revelation in Iceborne's new trailer is the tease that classic phallus-headed foe Brachydios, last seen in Monster Hunter Generations, is set to make a return in September's expansion.

Unfortunately, Capcom is remaining tight-lipped as far as any further Brachydios details go right now, although its latest developer diary does offer more concrete information on other new monsters heading to World as part of the Iceborne expansion.

Monster Hunter World's major expansion, Iceborne, is heading to Xbox One, PS4, and PC later this year. And in the run-up to release (and a more thorough unveiling at E3 next week), Capcom has unleashed a host of new videos, showcasing more of Iceborne's new features.

First in the tottering pile is a brand-new story trailer, mixing ample cutscene jabbering with some welcome moments of new gameplay. Despite being almost four minutes long, it's not the most revelatory of videos, but there are a couple of notable inclusions - such as a first look at the updated Tigrex, a classic series monster set to make its World debut in Iceborne. Nice and all, but WHERE ARE THE LAGOMBI, CAPCOM??

Next up is a brisk look at one of Iceborne's major new features: the Clutch Claw, used to grabble onto monsters in one fluid motion - no launching off high ledges required.

Devil May Cry 5 "successfully reinvigorated" the series, Capcom has said.

Capcom shipped 2m copies of the action game, it confirmed in a financial report. Shipped doesn't mean sales to customers, but Capcom stressed Devil May Cry 5, alongside Resident Evil 2, had "exceeded expectations".

Devil May Cry 5 is the first "mainline" entry in the series for over 10 years, and follows Ninja Theory's excellent but, according to Capcom, non-mainline DmC: Devil May Cry, which came out in 2013.

Following on from the gameplay trailer reveal of Monster Hunter World expansion Iceborne, Capcom has shared a few more details on what players can expect to see when the paid update hits PS4 and Xbox One on 6th September.

As previously announced, Iceborne, which requires the Monster Hunter World base game to play, will introduce a brand-new story - picking up after the ending of the main game - as well as new monsters, and a new high-level rank. The latter, one step above High Rank, will be known as Master Rank, and is analogous to the G Rank seen in previous Monster Hunter games.

In many ways, though, the star of the show in Iceborne will be its new biome, known as Hoarfrost Reach - a snowy, extremely cold area that distinguishes itself from the base game both visually and in terms of its new gameplay elements. The extreme cold will, for instance, decrease hunters' stamina, making it much harder to battle the area's formidable creatures. Thankfully, effects of the cold can be countered (in much the same way as it could in earlier Monster Hunter games) by drinking Hot Drinks.

Ahead of tonight's planned Monster Hunter World Spring Update livestream, Capcom has offered a sizeable new gameplay trailer showcasing the game's previously announced Iceborne expansion, which now has a release date of 6th September.

I could probably just write the word NARGACUGA in massive letters and be done with it, but there's a whole lot more on show in Iceborne's beefy new trailer, which aired as part of Sony's State of Play livestream. Alongside a glimpse of the snowy wastes that form Monster Hunter World's new biome in Iceborne, the trailer offers a look at some of the new and returning beasts that fearless hunters will be up against, come 6th September.

Following the trailer reveal, Capcom confirmed that Iceborne's newly unveiled September release date applies to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, Monster Hunter World players on PC will unfortunately need to wait a little longer for the expansion; at present, it's scheduled to reach the platform some time "this winter".

It's taken its sweet time getting to the platform, but Monster Hunter World players on PC will finally be able to step into the shoes of Geralt of Rivia next month, on May 9th, as part of the game's Witcher collaboration.

Monster Hunter World's Witcher crossover, which arrived on PS4 and Xbox One back in February, consists of a decently sized single-player mission and some multiplayer-enabled questing. The first of these, a new Special Assignment known as Contract: Trouble in the Ancient Forest, is a permanent addition to the game, and is designed for solo hunters at HR16.

It casts players as everybody's favourite beard-y Witcher, Geralt of Rivia (with voice actor Doug Cockle even providing new lines), and features Geralt-exclusive abilities, side quests, multiple endings, and a fight with a familiar Witcher foe - the formidable, forest-dwelling Leshen.
