Hello Survivors!

Don’t worry about your Christmas date this year, as Winter Race is here to accompany you in this cold season. Select your vehicle, streak through thrilling race tracks, and enjoy Vikendi’s cool wind whipping at your face as you drive your way to victory!




You’ll first need a vehicle to start racing! Select the vehicle of your choice during the race countdown by comparing each vehicle’s speed and durability.

• Available vehicles: Motorbike, Pickup, Coupe RB, Quad, Zima
• Each vehicle provides its own weapon and a set of equipment.

In every match, players will play in a randomly selected racetrack among the five shown above.

• Tracks
  • Track 1: A straight line track starting from the starting line to the finishing line.
  • Track 2: A circular track requiring players to finish 2 laps to complete the race.
  • Track 3: A square track requiring players to finish 2 laps to complete the race.
  • Track 4: A track requiring players to return to the starting line to complete the race.
  • Track 5: A frozen straight line track starting from the starting line to the finishing line.
• Checkpoints
  • Players will have to drive through several checkpoints during the race.
  • If players go off-track for too long, they will be automatically respawned to their recent checkpoint.

Once the countdown’s over, the race finally begins!

• Every player will spawn in their vehicles on the starting line.
• You won’t be able to move or attack other players until the race officially starts.
• Players will be invincible for 10 seconds at the very beginning and 5 seconds after each respawn to prevent instant deaths.
• Race forward once the match starts! Attack or avoid enemies until the finishing line!

Pick up crates that’ll bestow you various weapons, items, and speed boosts to fire up the competition even more!

• Crates will respawn shortly after being collected.
• Ammo Crates
  • Blue ammo crates provide a specific amount of ammo for your equipped weapon. Press 3 (PC) / X Hold (Xbox, Stadia) / Square Button Hold (PlayStation®) to use equipped weapon.
• Boost Crates
  • Red boost crates provide speed boosts and weapons for vehicles.
  • Speed boosts are usable with the Shift key.
    • To balance out vehicles’ speeds, motorbikes will not be able to use speed boosts.
  • Obtainable weapons for vehicles
    • The Pickup, Coupe RB, and Zima can equip weapons to inflict damage by colliding with other vehicles.
    • The Quad can equip protective gear to block damage from other vehicles or weapons.
    • To balance out vehicles’ gameplay, motorbikes will not be able to equip weapons.

  • Black crates that will create a Red Zone lasting a few seconds in the next checkpoint area the player running first place is heading for.

  • Red Zone crates will not respawn after being collected.
• Weapon Crates
  • Yellow weapon crates provide ammo for the ice flare gun. Press 1 (PC) / X Hold (Xbox, Stadia) / Square Button Hold (PlayStation®) to use the ice flare gun.

The first player to successfully cross the finishing line wins the whole race for their squad!

The whole race will end 60 seconds after the winner crosses the finishing line.

Hello Survivors!As you’ve no doubt heard by now, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is going free-to-play on January 12, 2022! While this is certainly an exciting time, we know that there are often important questions that pop up with such a transition. Namely, how will we address cheaters in a free-to-play game?Anti-cheat is always a critical priority, but with Free-to-Play incoming, the need for an effective anti-cheat system is more important than ever as banned accounts can easily and infinitely be replaced.To that end, we've been quietly, yet fiercely, preparing a number of countermeasures to combat cheat programs. That said, anti-cheat is always a never-ending fight and nothing we or anyone can do will ever completely stomp out cheating in competitive online games..In this Dev Letter, we’re going to dive in and talk more about what we've been building in 2021, how our anti-cheat situation is looking today, and what we have in store for the future.
What We've Been Doing in 2021
We’ve broken down our 2021 efforts into four categories that we’ll go into more depth on:
1. Anti-Cheat Solution Improvements
   
2. Hardware Ban Improvements
   
3. Game Client Vulnerabilities
   
4. In-Game Abuse Reinforcements
Anti-Cheat Solution Improvements: ZakynthosZakynthos is our proprietary anti-cheat solution that we implemented in January of 2021 as a means to speed up the anti-cheat process. Where before we had to rely on slower external solutions, the time saved with Zakynthos helped us remove an additional 28% of cheaters from the previous year.Before we talk about what the future holds for Zakynthos and anti-cheat, let’s take a moment to talk about how we go about tackling cheat programs. When we discover a new cheat program, we secure and reverse engineer said program to get a full, deep analysis of what it does and how it bypasses our security. Once our tests lead us to a countermeasure, we develop detection logic into our anti-cheat solutions. Stability tests and other steps then help to ensure these updates don't compromise the overall integrity of the game.Even with all of the above, cheat developers are tenacious and will learn how to bypass our anti-cheat solutions' radars after a time, meaning we always need to be adjusting and improving those solutions in an effort to keep up. Here’s a bit of what we will be implementing in 2022:
• Automatic analysis of cheat software based on machine learning techniques
  
• 24-hour monitoring of Ranked matches in upper ranks
  
• Implementation of kernel drivers
  
• Preventing tampering of client
  
• Hardware ban system improvements
Hardware Ban Improvements: Keeping Cheaters OutCollecting cheaters' hardware information and dishing out hardware bans has been something we've been doing for some time now. While it is quite effective, every software has its flaws and some dedicated cheaters were able to find ways to circumvent such sanctions on their hardware.There is also the never-ending struggle of issuing swift and decisive bans while avoiding any false-positives that an operation of this scale is sure to stumble upon.To help solve these issues, we’ve developed a new hardware ban technology that utilizes special algorithms, which we implemented into Zakynthos. This upgrade eventually resulted in a near 30% decrease in metrics that track players experiencing and reporting cheaters. The new hardware ban also prevented penalized players from circumventing their bans, which subsequently helped us hold the line in terms of anti-cheat metrics.Game Client VulnerabilitiesIn 2021, we also focused on dealing with cheats that took advantage of vulnerabilities in our client.First, to counter speed hacks and flying cars, we made changes so that speed and air time for character and vehicle movement were cross-checked by the server. However, for gameplay aspects where responsiveness is key, having the server cross-check everything could result in sluggish character movement and vehicle control for everyone.Therefore, we analyzed the play patterns of cheaters, and we were able to apply server-side cross-checks and other defense mechanisms to select accounts only. As a result, the number of players using cheat programs related to character and vehicle movement was reduced by an astounding 99.97%!Next, we worked on countering cheats that allow players to score kills from absurd distances or that automatically set your crosshair on opponents (or Aimbots, as most would call them). As these types of cheats are especially detrimental to players' willingness to continue playing, we worked very closely with content development teams to add various validations and defense mechanisms regarding weapon firing, as well as reinforcing Zakynthos to better prevent cheaters from tampering with our client.In-Game Abuse ReinforcementsAs more and more accounts were banned due to our increased anti-cheat efforts, cheaters looked more and more towards acquiring replacement accounts. As demand for Ranked-ready accounts increased, cases of accounts earning Survival Mastery XP in abnormal ways became more prevalent as well.Also, in high-tier Ranked, we've seen an unfortunate increase in players who constantly team with cheaters to get an unfair advantage towards gaining their RP (Rank Points).Fighting off cheat programs is very important, but we feel that enforcing these abuse cases are also important in providing a fair gameplay environment. By implementing machine-learning techniques and analyzing abuse cases, we've been doubling down on penalizing players engaging in malicious behavior.As a result of our efforts, the number of players gaining Survival Mastery XP in abnormal ways has decreased by approximately 30%, and the number of players gaining RP through wrongful methods in high-tier Ranked has decreased by approximately 50%. As improvements are made and players learn they can no longer get away with cheating, these numbers continue to decrease.
Current Anti-Cheat Status
Here on the anti-cheat team, we refer to various metrics to assess the game’s overall anti-cheat status. We first take a look at how many suspected cheater accounts there are out of our monthly player count, as this metric gives an intuitive sense of our overall anti-cheat status.By delivering on the anti-cheat goals we had for this year, the ratio for suspected cheater accounts has gone down by approximately 45% compared to early 2021, and the situation is continually improving. Our work on patching up client vulnerabilities has continually dropped the average kill count per session for cheaters, a clear sign that the effect cheaters have on our service is decreasing.Even when comparing the number of permanent bans with last year's, the number has gone down by approximately 47%. Judging by the fact that the ratio of suspected cheaters to monthly traffic has decreased and is staying at similar levels, we can see this as a sign that the number of cheat program users has significantly decreased as well.Anti-Cheat Analysis During Free Play WeekPreviously, we ran two Free Play Week events - one in 2020 and one in 2021. While great marketing for the game, these weekends also gave us valuable insight into our anti-cheat capabilities in a Free-to-Play environment.During our June 2020 Free Play Week event, the ratio of suspected cheaters skyrocketed, especially when looking at Normal Matches. However, during the August 2021 Free Play Week event, the ratio of suspected cheaters spiked after the event started but eventually recovered and settled in line with the numbers we had before the event, marking another promising victory for Zakytnthos.Cheater Reports in Ranked MatchesAs reports from players in the upper ranks who claimed to have encountered more and more cheaters came in, our team studied the report rate data for each Rank Points range. The graph below shows that the report rate was relatively high early this year, but it gradually fell as we reinforced our anti-cheat solutions over the months. We do realize that not every rate has greatly improved, but it is a promising start and we are planning to strengthen our anti-cheat solutions even further.
Upcoming Plans for the Anti-Cheat Team
Now that we’ve talked about what we’ve done up until this point, let’s take a look forward at what our teams will be doing for free-to-play and beyond.We are continuously preparing new and improved anti-cheat reinforcements. To share a few, we are actively looking into improving the situations of cheaters bypassing the SMS authentication system and of cheaters hacking into innocent players' accounts.We have received numerous suggestions from you all on ways to alleviate cheating in ranked play, including raising the Survival Mastery entry level for Ranked. We have of course considered this suggestion, but are still cautious of the risks of creating a difficult environment for beginners and current players trying to reach the entry bar for Ranked, especially going into free-to-play and its potential for a large influx of new players. We will of course keep a close eye on this and other suggestions as we work towards the ultimate solution.Cheating is not the only annoyance players face in the game. The spam and promotion of these cheats have continued to be a problem as well. The cheat software promotions happening in-game are being continuously monitored and gradually improved, but we will continue to reinforce our efforts against illegal promotions happening. We will also continue to actively enforce legal measures against those developing, supplying, and selling cheat software.Console platforms will also see their anti-cheat solutions strengthened. We took measures against lag switches in early December and are continuing to research and develop solutions for cheaters' use of unauthorized controller accessories that also negatively affect gameplay on console platforms.In addition, we are continuously working on our solutions for other commonly reported cheat software such as ESP (showing enemies' locations) and "Aimbots."As much as we wish to share more in-depth information with you all, cheat developers are always watching our every move and using every bit of our information to create stronger cheat software and stay a step ahead of our solutions. Therefore, we tried our best to share as much relevant and promising information as we could, while keeping the rest a bit more incognito.We know you watch our anti-cheat efforts with great interest and know that you’ll continue to hold us to a higher standard due to the sheer competitiveness of a game like BATTLEGROUNDS. We may still be cautious about sharing topics about anti-cheat, but we will always look for ways to communicate what we can more frequently with you. FAQ
What are you going to do about cheating and hacking?
• There are some differences between Basic and BATTLEGROUNDS Plus in accessible game modes. This is partly aimed at giving additional benefits to those upgrading to the BATTLEGROUNDS Plus, but the ultimate reason for restricting the use of some major content is to prevent cheaters. In the case of Ranked Mode, fair play is required the most as it is a fierce competition of players competing over Rank Points(RP). If anyone can play in a Ranked match without any restrictions, there are concerns about the possibility of an increase in potential cheaters as well as the possibility of banned players returning to the game easily. In addition, in order to prevent actions such as promoting unauthorized programs through creating custom matches, some contents are only available through BATTLEGROUNDS Plus. Anti-cheat is more important than ever as PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is now free-to-play. We have prepared a separate detailed announcement regarding anti-cheat, so please read more for details.

Starting from this update, our Patch Reports will now be released with the Live server update instead of the Test server update.

When shooting our amazing Patch Report videos a stable game build is required - however, the build we need becomes complete around the time when the Live server gets updated.
Due to this hectic process, our creators inevitably undergo crunch mode. Therefore, we decided it would be best for both ourselves and our players to extend our working days and provide a better Patch Report by releasing it on a later date. We appreciate your understanding.

※ Please keep in mind that the features and updates we provide below may be modified or even possibly removed due to reasons such as bugs, in-game issues, and/or community feedback. We will update our players if such changes occur. 


We announced the long-term Map Service Plan to our players not so long ago, but after reviewing our players' feedback, we realized our plan was not something our players looked forward to. Therefore, after thorough internal debates based on our community's feedback, we have decided it would be best to change the map rotation service for Season 15 to the following:

• Normal Match
  • Erangel / Miramar / Sanhok / Taego / Vikendi
• Ranked
  • Erangel / Miramar / Taego

Taego will remain in the map rotation for Season 15 due to two reasons: first, our players' feedback, and second, our data showing us that Taego maintains its status as a very popular map. With these being the case, including Haven to the rotation would eventually cause stability issues as we'd have to adapt the map selection UI for regions with map selection without thorough testing. As for regions without map selection, players could feel frustrated having to play several matches before reaching the map they'd like.

Please note that our map service plan for Season 16 and later are still being discussed, but a separate announcement will be made to our players once decisions are made.




Attention all triathletes! The Mountain Bike, a fan-requested vehicle is coming to the Battlegrounds. Unlike our other vehicles, the Mountain Bike can be found as a lootable item in its folded state. It can be located most often on the outskirts of the map, helping you have additional transportation methods.

Due to the lack of an engine, it hardly makes any noise, allowing for stealthy movement. Combined with Driver shooting, this can lead to some great surprises for your enemies.

Sprinting
Like in real life, you can sprint on the Mountain Bike by putting in some physical effort to mash the "Move Forward" key repeatedly to cycle faster. Being boosted makes it easier to reach max sprint speed. Higher tapping speeds increase sprint speed.

Jumping
Additionally, you can put your BMX skills to the test by jumping with the Mountain Bike. Holding the "jump" key longer (up to half a second) will increase jump height. High speed and being boosted also increases the jump height.

Wheelies
We hipsters don't ride on two wheels. We don't find the need to use all wheels because it just ain't cool! One, that's right, one wheel is all we need. Try to find the perfect balance by holding the "sprint" key and tapping "jump" in rhythm to find the hipster inside you.



Weapon Balance
As a battle royale game where every match presents different situations, we believe each weapon category should have its purpose in certain types of encounters. Based on our data findings and community feedback we have made weapon balance changes.

P90

• The P90 is making the most kills of any Crate weapon and is performing better on ranges where we want Crate ARs to dominate. So we decided to increase the recoil difficulty while supplying less ammo.
  • 
    Increased horizontal and vertical recoil

    Increased ADS deviation during full-auto burst
    
  • 
    Lowered Care package ammo from 250 -> 200 bullets
    

Shotguns

• The Shotguns in Battlegrounds continue to have a very limited role as seen in our data, to improve their usability we are increasing the effective range.

    Increased damage drop-off range to improve effective range by several meters per shotgun
    
  • 
    Increased hit probability on short range
    
  • 
    Increased Sawed-Off damage by 1
    
  • Decreased Sawed-Off pellet spread

LMGs

• LMGs in general are not considered useful enough based on our data, so we are slightly increasing their damage potential to improve the weapon's role. For MG3 we saw very little usage in our data compared to the other crate weapons so we are making it more powerful.
  • Reduced recoil when shooting in crouch and stand
  • Increased Body Damage multiplier from 1.0 to 1.05
  • Increased M249 damage by 1
  • Increased MG3 damage by 2
  • Decreased MG3 horizontal recoil

SMGs

• While some players feel that SMGs have a strong position due to their relatively low recoil, we still see in data that their role in weapon balance is very limited. To incentivize more accurate firing we are increasing the Head Damage multiplier. 
  • Increased Head Damage multiplier from 1.8 to 2.1
  • Increased PP-19 Bizon weapon accuracy during ADS full auto firing
  • Decreased UMP45 Damage at longer ranges
  • Decreased UMP45 weapon accuracy during ADS full auto firing

AUG

• The AUG seems to be overtaken by the P90 and even by the user's ability to control the Beryl, thus we are making it slightly more powerful to improve its Crate weapon status.
  • Increased damage by 1
  • Increased damage drop-off range to improve effective range

Magazine Balance
Based on our data over the years, we see that magazines in PUBG have not been very equally balanced. The Extended QuickDraw magazine offers an obvious upgrade over the Extended and QuickDraw magazines. The QuickDraw magazine is often left aside with players not even bothering to pick them up despite their advantage over having no magazine attachment at all.

We have tweaked our magazine attachments to add tactical decision-making and to improve the usefulness of the QuickDraw Magazine and Extended Magazine. Now every magazine attachment will be useful and offer its own play-style.

If you want to have up to 60% faster reloads, take a QuickDraw Magazine. If you want to have the highest magazine capacity, take an Extended Magazine. If you want to have a bit of both, take an Extended QuickDraw Magazine.

Example when applied to M416:

• Default Magazine: 30 bullets
• QuickDraw Magazine: 30 bullets and 60% faster reload
• Extended Magazine: 42 bullets
• Extended QuickDraw Magazine: 40 bullets and 15% faster reload

Additionally, we have added the QuickDraw Magazine Attachment to the Skorpion.

Sanhok Update

• Bootcamp

• As being one of the most hottest drop zones in Sanhok, Bootcamp should be able to provide dynamic gameplay experiences. But we've been hearing that our players were not enjoying the reworked Bootcamp as the structure felt too crowded and complex for desirable tactical plays. Therefore, we decided to make Bootcamp undergo another big change and the best way to go at it was to shift the whole structure. Here are some of the main changes:
  • To reduce the complexity and bunched-up feeling of Bootcamp, the central tower has been repositioned from the center to the right. We have then considered different angles and distances and adjusted the layout of the other buildings around the center area to provide an open space for better shooting.
  • Players seemed to have too much of an advantage behind the parapet walls on the third floor of the central tower so we got rid of them and instead placed boxes made of stone on the rooftops.
    • We also narrowed the space between the second and third floor to reduce the advantage players had on the third floor.
  • We realized that the large windows on the second floor of the central tower were allowing a wide view of players' surroundings which resulted in frequent camping. Thus, we have shrunk the size of the windows.
  • Training areas have been added and scattered around the center as well to provide more cover and looting spots.
  • We moved the watchtowers to place one each in the north and south to prevent players from hoarding them.
  • Players didn't seem to have the best opportunities when they land a little late on Bootcamp. Therefore, we removed the 4 warehouses within Bootcamp and added 3 to the North (outside of Bootcamp) so even players who start late could earn a better chance at arming and hiding.

• Shoreline

• Players seemed to be feeling vulnerable around the shoreline areas so more rocks and trees have been added.
• Weather
  • The lighting and weather effects in Sanhok seemed to be hindering our players' in-game sight, so we:
    • Increased brightness by 25% for Clouds and Sunset weather.
    • Decreased darkness from 66% → 33% when it turns Foggy/Rain during Overcast weather.
Vikendi Update
• KAKAO FRIENDS

• PUBG's new collaboration is with KAKAO FRIENDS! More information on this collaboration will be updated in a separate announcement on the day the Live Server gets updated.
• Dinoland has transformed into KAKAO FRIENDS LAND.
  • KAKAO FRIENDS statues have been positioned here and there in KAKAO FRIENDS LAND.
  • Billboards for KAKAO FRIENDS have been added.
  • Buildings have been decorated with KAKAO FRIENDS ornaments.
• Christmas

• Christmas theme has been applied to Dinoland, Castle, and Winery.
• Christmas weather has been added.
  • Players can use this weather setting in Custom Matches for Vikendi.

Unlocked Rewards
• The Parachute Skin is a permanent reward players keep forever and can equip as they please.

Training Mode Update  
• Every vehicle but the Scooter has been removed from Training Mode to prevent various sound and crash issues and to prevent players from getting bothered by other players' vehicles during shooting practice.
• After we observe the change in memory usage issues, we will discuss about the feature of allowing players to choose a vehicle of their choice in Training Mode.
Action Wheel Update  

• An additional Action Wheel with 8 more slots has been added as we noticed that players did not seem to have enough space to fit and use all their spray and emote items.
• Players will be able to find their additional Action Wheel in the Customize tab.
• In the lobby or in a match, players can use their mouse wheel to switch between the first and second action wheel.
• If players select spray items from their Action Wheel in the lobby, a message will pop up saying that sprays are unable to use.
Performance Update  
• There has been performance updates with the Hideout tab.
  • The loading speed when first accessing the page has been improved.
  • A feature that could help prevent accidental weapon upgrades has been added.
    • A message showing the current level has been added to the Upgrade button.
    • Once a player clicks the Upgrade button, an additional confirmation message will pop up.
• Memory usage has been improved by removing unused and duplicate data files within the game.
Smoke Grenade Sound Update  
Smoke grenade deployment sound and visual effects are now synchronized
• The deploy sound stops ten seconds before the smoke cover fully disappears.
• Smoke cover fadeout starts when sound effect is stopped, so player can start being visible from five seconds while inside smoke.

• New Vehicle: Mountain Bike's tool tip is displayed only in English in all languages.
