PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - Valor

Hello everyone,

We recently released Update #27 on the Test Server, which included lots of changes, including the new MP5K SMG, Survivor Pass 3, and changes to the Survival Title System for season 3. In addition to these, we made quite a few changes to gameplay balance and wanted to go a little more in depth on our thought process behind those in this Dev Letter.

Update #27 is the first major balance patch of 2019. We introduce balance patches such as these to keep the game evolving and prevent gameplay from becoming stale. Our goal is to release a pretty major balance patch roughly once per quarter, to provide a more diverse PUBG experience and keep the game evolving and feeling fresh.

Let’s take a look at some of the major changes implemented with this balance patch.

Aim Punch

Aim punch is a type of camera shake that is triggered by getting hit and momentarily offsets player's aim point, and is used to simulate the realistic effect that being struck by a bullet would have on your aim. We have done multilateral analysis of our aim punch system, including taking in lots of player feedback, and concluded that it needs to be adjusted to generate less impact on gameplay while keeping the effect to some degree. In the past, getting shot applied a considerable penalty on long range aiming, especially when using high magnification scopes. With the update, players are now able to readjust their aim and find their target faster. For short range aiming, previously, aim punch could potentially lead to losing the entire fight just because you were hit first, which would sway your full auto burst away from the target. With these changes, players should see fewer instances of this, as the effect of aim punch has been reduced by around 50% of what it used to be. However, remember that aim punch penalties are harsher when not wearing armor, so be aware of this if your helmet or vest happen to break.

Attachments

In terms of attachments, we decided to undertake a couple of actions to reduce the loot clutter in the game. As of this patch, Pistols and SMGs now utilize the same attachments, significantly reducing the overall attachments in the loot pool. This change will also be accompanied by a greater number of AR and SR attachments spawning in the world. Along these same lines, we merged shotgun and bullet loops into one single item that can be used on both shotguns and sniper rifles. Finding this type of attachment should now be much easier, especially when you need it on your Kar98k or lever-action rifle. Since this change has removed several items from the game, we have filled in that loot gap by increasing the quantities of overall items spawned. While the quantity increase was evenly distributed across all other items, a few items that are more highly desired received a greater amount of increase, such as ARs, heal/boost items, and equipment. Exceptions to this quantity increase were level 3 helmets and flare guns, which could drastically alter the game experience even with a small quantity change. The main purpose of this adjustment is to provide a better gameplay experience by increasing the quantities of major items while keeping the items that have a huge impact on gameplay to the same level.

Weapons

We’ve also made a few changes in the weapons department. SMGs will now deal more damage to limbs to improve their short range effectiveness, whereas sniper rifles will deal significantly more damage to the torso, being able to one-shot kill unarmored targets (except for Win94). Apart from that, we decided to swap around the calibers of two sub-machine guns; the Vector and UMP. This is to make them more realistically accurate damage wise, as well as to improve the usability of the Vector by giving it a larger magazine capacity. While the damage of the Vector has been reduced slightly to 31, it still remains a very capable weapon, now with an increased default magazine capacity and being able to fire up to 33 rounds quickly with an extended magazine. This change also means that very long bursts with the Vector will now be a little easier to control. Last but not least, we’ve added the tactical stock attachment to the Mutant and the M16A4, making them easier to use as "tapping weapons." The latter also had its recoil reduced on the initial shots of burst mode, making it more deadly in CQC scenarios.

First Aid Kits

Finally, we decided to change the way the first aid kit works in the game. Instead of restoring you to 75% health immediately after the use timer, the healing will now apply over 2 seconds. This change will make it a little more difficult to immediately re-engage a target after you’ve applied a heal, so finding good cover is recommended before you take the time to heal. If you are on the attacking side of things, this gives you a little more time to close the distance on a recovering enemy while they wait for their health bar to fill. We are looking forward to seeing how this changes the dynamics of firefights and are eager to hear your feedback on how this feels as a player.

These balance changes put more emphasis on PUBG’s core gameplay elements, and are intended to boost playability while offering a fresh gameplay experience. We expect there to be a lot of varied feedback for this update and understand that balance changes such as these can be a touchy subject. As always, any and all feedback is welcome and will be the basis of which we decide future directions for PUBG. Hop in-game, check out the changes, and let us know your thoughts!

Thank you,

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - Hawkinz
Hello everyone,

PUBG has been generating various codes for cosmetics items since March of 2017 and over 5 million item codes have been distributed globally through events and promotions.

Distributed codes have historically had no expiration date, which has lead to cases of codes not being used for their intended purpose, or otherwise being exploited/abused. Therefore, in the coming weeks, we will be deactivating certain existing item codes to prevent further abuse and facilitate a healthy item economy.

These changes will also allow us to continue offering players opportunities to obtain item codes through events and promotions well into the future.

Code deactivation is conducted in accordance with the "Bonus / Gift Code Policy" specified in [Operational Policy].
Please check the details below for code deactivation schedule and to review applicable codes.

※ Codes will no longer be redeemable after deactivation.
※ For those who possess item codes obtained for free, please make sure to read this announcement in detail.

9. Bonus/Gift Code (“Code”) Policy
1) PUBG may provide Codes to allow customers to redeem and use skins, including costume skins, weapon skins, and other in-game contents (Collectively, “Contents”) either as free of charge or as paid Contents through approved affiliate companies or directly from PUBG. “Free Code” means PUBG grant customers Codes without any charge, which are used for promotional and marketing purposes. If customers obtain Codes after participating an event and/or a tournament, we still consider these Codes as Free Codes.
5) Free Codes have an expiration date of 3 months after they have been issued, and customers cannot redeem Codes if they are expired.
[Deactivation Schedule and Codes subject to Deactivation]
- Code redeemable until: 23:59, Sunday, April 25 (Tentative) (KST)
- Code deactivation as of : After Monday, April 26 (KST)

- Codes subject to deactivation
Codes subject to deactivation can be identified by the first 4 characters of the serial number.
For example, all codes that start with P153 as the prefix are subject to deactivation, which means P153-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx is subject to deactivation.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - Valor

Dear PUBG Fans,

On March 23, PUBG celebrates its two-year anniversary since releasing to the public, and what an amazing two years it has been! We’ve witnessed a gaming revolution with the birth of the Battle Royale genre, grew and learned together through beta and early access, and watched our game rise from a small title developed by an even smaller team to one of the most played games in the world. We’ve chosen this day as our overall PUBG anniversary for all platforms, as we felt it best reflects our game’s humble beginnings.

Reflecting on 2018 specifically, we began to tackle some of the issues that came with the lessons we’ve learned as a company, releasing several quality of life improvements and recommitting to higher quality, more stable builds. 2018 also saw the launch of our Training Mode and two brand new maps, the small but savage island map of Sanhok and the beautiful icy landscapes of Vikendi. Lastly, we brought the high intensity PUBG experience to our fans on console with official releases on both XBOX and PlayStation.

Last year also saw the growth of competitive PUBG with our PGI tournament in Berlin, the continuation of Broadcaster Royale tournaments alongside Twitch, and the organization of multiple PUBG pro esports leagues all across the world.

We’re extremely proud of everything we’ve accomplished in 2018 and could not have achieved any of it without your love and support. As our thanks to you and to commemorate our second anniversary, a special anniversary item will be available in-game for free when Update #27 hits live servers, until 4/24 KST on PC and 4/9 - 5/7 on Console. To claim it, visit the in-game store and “purchase” the free item on PC or simply login during the event dates on Console.

But just because we’re celebrating how far we’ve come doesn’t mean we’re not aware of what we still need to accomplish. We’re currently deep into planning improvements to our first map, Erangel. The first changes in this process, increasing and improving loot, have already deployed to test servers, where we welcome your feedback.

We can never properly thank you for your unparalleled support, but on a day such as this, we are happy, we are humbled, and we are more dedicated than ever to making PUBG the best game it can possibly be.

Before we go, we want to leave you with a special message from CH Kim, the CEO of PUBG Corporation.

Happy Anniversary and we’ll see you on the Battlegrounds!

Update #27 is now available on live servers!

First off, this update brings the brand new Survivor Pass 3: Wild Card! With up to 60 rewards available. In celebration of the PUBG 2 year anniversary, we’ve added a free 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CAP to the store. Lots of changes included in this update, many of which were thanks in huge part to great player feedback.

Major changes have been made to the Flare Gun, including quality of life improvements. We’ve added the new MP5K SMG to Vikendi, bumped up the loot on Erangel, made lots of changes to weapon balance, including making the M16A4 stronger, and also reduced aim punch. We haven’t forgotten bug fixes and we’ve got plenty listed below!

New Weapon MP5K

The MP5K is a brand new sub-machine gun chambered for 9mm ammunition. MP5K is exclusive to Vikendi and replaces the Vector on that map.

While the firing mechanics of the MP5K are similar to those of the Vector, it boasts a higher per bullet damage, but with a lower overall firing rate and DPS. This SMG also has a higher magazine capacity than the Vector, starting at 30 rounds by default with 40 rounds in an extended magazine.

Key characteristics of the MP5K:
  • High rate of fire at 900 RPM with reasonably easy to control recoil
  • Accommodates all attachment slots to allow for a tactical stock, different types of magazines, muzzles attachments, grips, the laser sight and of course scopes
  • Base damage value of 33
  • Exclusive to Vikendi

    • The Tactical Stock will decrease recoil recovery time, animation kick and weapon sway, while also improving ADS speed and hipfire accuracy

    • Magazine capacity has been increased to 19 bullets by default and 33 with an extended mag (was 13/25)
    • Damage decreased from 34 to 31 due to above changes
    • Muzzle velocity changed to 380m/s (previously 300m/s)
  • UMP45
    • The UMP9 has been rechambered to use 45ACP ammo and is now called the UMP45.

    • First aid kits will no-longer heal instantly after use timer and will instead restore health over a 2 second period
    • Vehicles now block players from receiving grenade damage with a similar mechanism used for other objects. Although, depending on grenade position and trajectory, damage can still be dealt to players hiding behind vehicles.
Item Spawn Balance Modification
Erangel Loot Changes

The overall item spawn rates on Erangel have been increased. Additionally, we’ve increased the spawn rate of some major weapon classes. Please jump in and try the changes and let us know your feedback!
  • Increased the spawn rate of ARs (12%), DMRs (16%) and SMGs (14%)
  • SRs and Handguns received a slight spawn rate increase
Due to item changes this patch, including merging some attachments together, there is naturally a gap left in spawns which needs to be filled with other items. Because of this, we have increased the spawn rate of other items evenly. This will also result in a small increase in spawns of high priority items such as ARs, meds etc.

This also means the overall loot for other maps has also increased slightly, although no changes have been made to individual item spawn ratios on other maps.

Flare Gun Balance
We have reviewed lots of player feedback on the Flare Gun since it’s release and are making the following changes:

UI/UX
  • Many players felt the icons and on-screen message related to Flare Guns did not match the style of PUBG as a realistic Battle Royale experience. We agree and have removed them
    • Removed the Flare Gun icon from the world map and mini-map
    • Removed the on-screen message indicating incoming special care packages
Sound Adjustments
  • As a result of adding Flare Guns, there were many more planes flying by regularly which led to much frustration from players due to both the volume and frequency. So, we’ve made the following changes
    • Altitude of the plane delivering Flare Gun special care packages is now set to 500m (raised from 350m)
    • Subsequently, the audible volume of the planes will now be lower
Adjusted Loot Balance
  • Reduced Flare Gun Spawn Rate to an average of 3 Flare Guns per game for all maps
    • We want the Flare Gun to be a rare item with great benefits, but at a high risk
    • Reduced the Care Package contents from 2 sets to 1 set in squad mode, which is the same as solo/duo mode
    • Reduced total Flare Gun care packages available to be called in per game
      • Now only 2 sets of special care packages and 2 armored UAZ can be called in per game total, down from 3

Movement Rustling Sound
*Based of community feedback, we've made adjustments to rustling sounds and applied these changes to live servers.
  • Weapons
    • Separate rustle sounds now play when equipping weapons in your hands vs holstering on your back
    • Identical rustling sound will be played regardless of weapon type
    • Sidearms, melee weapons and throwables do not make rustling sounds
  • Sound level balance
    • Rustling sounds of backpacks, weapons are all identical in both volume and audible distance
      • Even though the audible range of clothes is same as bags/weapons etc, it may sound like they're heard at a different range due to the volume being lower.
    • Audible distance and volume of the rustling sound changes dynamically based on the characters movement speed
      • The faster you move, the louder the noise, which can then be heard from further away
    • The audible range and the volume of the rustling sound is lower than footsteps
    • *Adjusted rustling sounds to be less abrasive
    • *Significantly reduced the overall sound
    • *Sound is now only output when wearing backpacks or while sprinting

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - Hawkinz
Hi everyone,

We’ve received lots of feedback regarding long matchmaking times from players in multiple regions, as well as players being placed in only one or two maps repeatedly when using Quick Join.

We are well aware of these concerns and take them very seriously. Our development team have been closely reviewing the current matchmaking system and conducting analysis to identify areas where improvements can be made.

We have released an update to live servers with improvements to matchmaking based on our matchmaking analysis and player feedback.

Here are the newly implemented changes:

General Matchmaking:
  • Improved matchmaking times when selecting individual maps.
  • Reduced instances of infinite matchmaking times on some maps.
Quick Join:
  • Improved functionality to better distribute players across all maps when using Quick Join.
    • Players will now be distributed into multiple different maps more consistently.
Previously, when selecting Quick Join, matchmaking would heavily favor matching players into the most commonly selected maps.
Please be aware that due to the above changes to improve map variety, Quick Join matchmaking times may increase slightly.

As matchmaking systems are highly complex, unexpected issues may arise, but we will continue to work hard and make improvements to ensure the matchmaking experience is as smooth as possible.

This is only one step in our efforts to improve matchmaking and not a final solution, your feedback is crucial as we work to continually improve the PUBG experience for our players.

Thank you.

Dear PUBG players,

Two years ago, we introduced the world to Erangel, the first map released for PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS and for many, their first ever Battle Royale map experience. Since then we’ve continued to evolve our game and release new maps, leaving Erangel stuck somewhere between the core PUBG experience and slightly outdated. Knowing this, we have been continuously collecting and analyzing your feedback, especially when it comes to loot and spawn rate issues. After serious consideration of all these factors, we have made the decision to remaster Erangel. We understand this task will be challenging. To somehow bring Erangel to the visual and tactical fidelity of more recent maps, while keeping the magic and nostalgia that made Erangel and PUBG popular in the first place will be no easy task. That’s exactly why we want to improve and test it alongside our players.

A project like this requires an immense amount of effort and will be completed in phases that will take place over several months. During the project, we will be releasing sections of the overall remaster for testing and feedback as we complete and apply the changes. For the first step in such a huge change, we will first be adjusting the loot and spawn rates of Erangel, which we plan to apply to the test server tomorrow. Today, we would like to share the direction and the intention of these changes to loot.

Before we begin…
As stated above, a project like this will require time, testing, and iteration. We want to stress that none of these phases deployed for public testing will be considered final until applied to live servers. Likewise, any tests, impressions, leaks, and data mining should be taken in the context that they are one piece of a whole puzzle. Each test will be accompanied by player feedback and internal data, so please keep an eye out for official communications on the status of Erangel testing.

Item Spawn Rates on Erangel
Our key goal with item spawn rates in PUBG is to balance the chaos of trying to survive in extreme circumstances with the fun of having the weapons players want to use. To add to the chaos portion of this goal, PUBG’s item spawn system is completely random and pulls from a master table that distributes the loot differently every single game. Being our first map, Erangel was designed to be highly random with a lower spawn rate.

As the time passed by and new maps came out, play patterns also began to evolve and progress from the early days of PUBG. This led to Erangel’s legacy loot system being much more noticeable. With community feedback on this topic growing all around the world, the development team started making attempts to solve the issue.

As you can see from the graph below, the spawn rate in Erangel overall has been steadily increased between Early Access and Now. In April of 2018, even after the patch to exclude clothing items from the map, we have continued adding new items and attachments to increase spawn rates. However, as the new map trends continued, we started to consider much more serious changes.

< Y-Axis Indicates Total Spawn Quantity>

Correlation between spawn rate and acquisition rate
We also conducted item pick-up experience tests with pro teams in esports mode to see if we could solve the balance issue by simply adjusting the spawn rate. We thought conducting the test in esports mode rather than normal mode would be much more effective in testing the impact of spawn rate adjustments since esports mode has higher item spawn settings.

<Loot Areas of Test (left) / Total Loot Items and Expected Value (right)>

<Detailed Data of Loot Efficiency>

The test included 15 areas and studied the efficacy of loot. Basically, we wanted to see which percentage of loot was picked up vs being left behind. Actual pick-up rate of items across all areas was 67.85%, which led to the conclusion that nearly 33% of items spawned were unnecessary or duplicate spawn items. More telling is the fact that one specific area had a loot efficiency of only 19.7%.

This test helped us realize that we should increase the value of the items as well as balance loot in areas where users weren’t finding good items compared to the importance and scale of the area they were in. We did also test loot without taking the popularity of different areas into consideration.

In addition to all this, we analyzed the types of items that can be looted in the major areas on the map, identified the characteristics of each area, and analyzed players’ preferred game patterns, including players’ preference of which areas to balance loot.

We could see that there was a clear difference in the item acquisition rate for each area on Erangel, and decided that we should also balance loot so that these are well distributed throughout the map.

Goal of Erangel Loot Balancing
Sanhok was a major comparison point for players when talking about the spawn rate of Erangel, and was characterized as smaller scale, plenty of loot, and faster-paced combat. Many players wanted a similar experience and loot balance on Erangel.

Actual data around this comparison shows that ARs are 4.75%, DMRs 0.69%, and SRs 0.26% on Sanhok, but 2%, 0.48%, and 0.12% on Erangel respectively, which shows that AR and SR ratios in Erangel are relatively low, especially considering the size difference of the map. We felt that Erangel represented our original Battle Royale experience as spawn rate of magazines, pistols, and grenades are high, while the spawn rate of major items is low on Erangel.

<Current Erangel/Sanhok Spawn Rate by Item Category>

For the upcoming test, we decided to adjust the spawn rate of Erangel a little more boldly, lowering the spawn amount of pistols, magazines, and grenades, while increasing the amount of weapons and equipment that play an important role in the gameplay by about 10-20%. In addition, we will adjust the amount of item spawns by item category to a ratio similar to that of Sanhok. While it may be a big change, we want to adjust the spawn amount to feel better while maintaining the unique characteristics of Erangel. The goal is to avoid Erangel being seen as a bigger Sanhok.

When we put all together of Erangel, players will have inconsistent item pick-up experiences as the map doesn’t provide loot balance in each area. In this regard, we are already aware of that this is not the only way to solve a fundamental problem in Erangel, but we plan to adjust spawn rate/spawn amount incrementally to provide 'consistent gameplay experiences of item acquiring and to emphasize the unique characteristics of the map'.

We’re looking forward to your feedback on these changes, but also know there is more to be done. For instance, more work needs to happen to balance loot across the various points of the map. Players will notice a slight gap in loot between some locations, but overall should experience better early-game looting and get equipment more quickly and easily. Just know that this is the first test, so the contents of this update are not set in stone. We’ll need your feedback to iterate on the changes and hope that together we can strike the right balance for Erangel.

Next Steps
As we mentioned earlier, spawn rate balance itself cannot fully fix the Erangel problem, so we will continue to change/adjust various elements as test progress. For example, if this increased spawn rate raises the frequency of early combat, the mid game might suffer due to fewer players in a larger safe zone. Of course, we will keep an eye on how play time and play style are affected and adjust if necessary.

This is a project very personal to us here at PUBG. Our goal, as always, is to make the best realistic Battle Royale game on the market. Remastering the map that started this amazing journey is our recommitment to that goal. As always, we thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback and are looking forward to your thoughts on the upcoming changes to Erangel.

Stay tuned for more info!

Thank you.

For PUBG esports fans, PUBG Europe League (PEL) is shaping up to be one of the marquee competitions of 2019. Before the first phase kicks off on March 21st, here’s everything you need to know about PEL.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeY1Vr7023Y

What is PEL?

PUBG Europe League is the top-tier professional PUBG esports league in Europe, organized by PUBG Corp. and StarLadder. PEL features three divisions including: PEL, PEL Contenders, and PEL Open. PEL is home to 16 of Europe’s best PUBG teams while PEL Contenders is the second division made up of 32 professional teams. Amateurs have a chance enter the European pro scene through the PEL Open.

Schedule

March 21 is the official start date of PUBG Europe League. Phase 1 Kick-Off will run for three weeks, with each match week consisting of four gaming days and five matches per day. The full schedule of Phase 1 Kick-Off is below.

PEL Phase 1 Kick-Off will have six directly invited teams selected for their performances in past PUBG tournaments, and ten teams who survived the PEL qualifiers. Below is the list of the PEL Phase 1 Kick-Off teams.

Unlike Phase 1 Kick-Off, all subsequent PEL phases will run for eight weeks. Teams in Phase 2 and Phase 3 will be competing for PEL points to help them secure seats at international tournaments held at the end of each phase. The best teams, based on the results of all three phases, will have a chance to compete at the PUBG Global Championship.

PEL Relegation System

Since Phase 1 Kick-Off is shorter, no team will leave PEL and no one will join PEL after the three-week phase. Beginning in Phase 2, the rules of promotion and relegation will be applied. The four lowe st-ranked teams in Phase 2 and Phase 3 will participate in the PEL Promo, where they’ll battle with the 12 best PEL Contenders teams. The top four teams from the PEL Promo tournament will advance to the PEL in the next Phase, while the remaining teams will be relegated to the PEL Contenders.
