It s EGX week and I m currently sat writing this article behind a set of flight cases in an isolated corner of the NEC, so you ll have to forgive me if I keep this brief. As you may expect, we ve got more deals to check out again this week, so let s get right to them, shall we?
As usual, we ve got deals that ll work in the UK, deals that ll work in the US and some deals that will work in both the UK and US, as well as presumably many other places. Let s get started. (more…)
If you had any doubt about the near-fact that Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds [official site] is about lads larking around on a weekend jolly which turns deadly, they will now be quashed by the revelation that it’s adding a vintage Volkswagen Kombi campervan as a driveable vehicle. Round up the lads, fill a level 3 backpack with tinnies (and a few painkillers, to be safe), hop in the bantwagon, and hit the road blasting Men At Work. No word yet on quite when it will be added but creator Brendan ‘Playerunknown’ Greene says another two vehicles are in the works and I’ll be livid if neither is the bicycle teased earlier this year. After describing themselves as "huge fans of the Battle Royale genre", Epic Games unveiled Fortnite Battle Royale last week—a new free-of-charge mode that'll drop 100 players into "one giant map" in a bid to become the last person standing. It's due to launch this coming Tuesday, September 26.
Now, it appears Bluehole has taken issue with perceived similarities between Epic's incoming mode, and its own similarly structured megahit PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
"We've had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game," says Bluehole VP and executive producer Chang Han Kim in a statement. "After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.
"We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right. The PUBG community has and continues to provide evidence of the many similarities as we contemplate further action."
We'll have more on this story as it develops.
When Brendan Greene did a PUBG AMA earlier this week, he said the forthcoming new map will also feature three new vehicles. At the time, he teased that we'd have to "wait and see" what they are, but now we know what at least one of them will be. It will be a van heavily reminiscent of the ye olde Volkswagen Kombi vans.
As for the other two, we'll have to keep waiting to see. This particular van will be an especially stylish way to barrel dangerously throughout PUBG's sprawling maps, but unlike the Kombi's reputation – at least here in Australia – it likely won't be a symbol of peace and love.
In addition to the new vehicles, Greene hinted at a bunch of other stuff that PUBG players can look forward to. Read the full report over here.
Brendan Greene, the man responsible for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, hosted a Reddit AMA earlier today. Within, he discussed the possibility of a single player campaign, new vehicles for the game's new and incoming map, and a tribute to '90s comedy show Father Ted.
With comments running into the thousands, Greene was inundated with questions but did manage to hit a number of interesting issues—not least adding solo play to the battle royale murder simulator.
"I would love to add a single player campaign to the game," says Greene when asked of the features he'd love to see added to the game. "I think the island we have could be a great location for an interesting story, but unfortunately we just don't have the time or the resources for this at the moment!"
What Greene and his Bluehole team does appear to have time for, however, is introducing new vehicles to the game's next map. Despite remaining tight-lipped on what they might be, he said: "We have new vehicles planned for the new map," says Greene. "As to what they are, you'll just have to wait and see."
Another feature heading to PUBG is a division and/or placement system, akin to the likes of CS:GO, League of Legends, and the similarly structured H1Z1. "We do have plans to add systems like this," explains Greene. "We also want to add a character leveling system and weapon skill systems (that doesn't affect game-play) and other progression systems. We'll have more info on these once we get a chance to fully plan them out."
Elsewhere, Greene said he and his team have "no plans" to introduce text chat any time soon, and that he's still getting used "every word [he says] publicly" being reported on, which in many ways underscores PUBG's meteoric success.
And from the sublime to the ridiculous: an homage to '90s comedy show Father Ted might be on the cards.
When asked if any subtle Irish references are planned down the line, Father Ted, for example, Greene said: "I don't think anyone at home knew that the game-mode was created by an Irishman, and as a result I was never contacted by any local companies. I also didn't have the experience to set up a studio myself so never really considered it. A little nod to Ted? I already have a plan for this, so stay tuned."
Cue Craggy Island as PUBG's third map. Check out Greene's Reddit AMA in full over here.
Update: Greene reaffirmed on Twitter that while he may "love" the idea, as he stated, there are no present plans to add a single-player campaign.
All social problems can be solved by data, any naive tech company can tell you, which is why Valve are attempting to solve Steam ‘review bombing’ by adding graphs to its player reviews. Review bombing is the practice of players organising to leave negative reviews that drive down a game’s rating in an attempt to punish or manipulate developers by damaging their future sales prospects. Games bombed over the past month range from Firewatch to Grand Theft Auto V. This is a known and old problem with Steam’s reviews, and one Valve aren’t happy with. So, to counterattack disproportionate bursts of negative reviews, Valve have added unusual activity warnings to Steam store pages with histograms tracking reviews over time. (more…)
In the wake of its substantial September update, PUBG's latest and 26th weekly update isn't nearly as generous but does target a number of bugs and other adjustments.
Deployed on the game's Test Servers yesterday—and now go on its Live Servers—a new feature has been added to the world map's 'Map Help' section that lets players mark their character's current position, as they would on the main map screen itself.
As outlined in this Steam Community post, players can also no longer modify ini files to set key binds for multiple actions on the same key.
On the bug fixing front, the update hits the following:
PUBG's 26th weekly update is now live.
Playerunknown s Battlegrounds has 24 guns currently available, each with its own set of scopes and attachments to glue on, which means it s fair to say that keeping track of them all can be a little difficult.
This Battlegrounds weapons guide will make that easier. Specifically, we ve come up with several ‘builds’ that you can follow. However PUBG is a fickle game where a lot of your decisions fall to chance, and these builds aren t set in stone. Instead, try to think of them more as tips to follow in case you ever have to decide between multiple options. It s also worth noting that items found within the airdrops have been deliberately excluded from this guide, simply because of their extremely low frequency.
Before we get started, you should consider reading our general Battlegrounds tips first. (more…)
