PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

The travel company behind Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds today added a new stag weekend destination, the roasting North African island of Karakin. The new map is the smallest so far, only 2x2km but still cramming in 64 players. It’s hazardous too, because its new ‘Black Zone’ bombings can outright destroy buildings and the new sticky bomb weapon lets players blast holes in some walls too. With Karakin coming in, PUBG Corp are making space by rotating Vikendi out for a while. And lads? Pack sunscreen.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has come a long way. From Steam early access phenomenon to popularising the battle royale genre, PUBG has enjoyed millions of players across multiple platforms.

On PC, though, PUBG's peak appears behind it. It has an astonishing all-time peak of 3.2m concurrent players on Steam, but that was achieved two years ago, in January 2018. Nowadays, PUBG peaks in the 600,000s.

This is not to say PUBG is done and dusted. It remains a massive game on Steam, the third-most popular game on Valve's platform, in fact, behind only Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. And the developers of PUBG continue to update the game in a bid to keep its playerbase interested and active. Recently, we heard about the experimental Bluehole mode, a way of playing the game that forces "circle squatters" to keep moving. The latest development is a brand new map called Karakin that has something that sounds very much like Bluehole Mode, but with a twist. It's called the Black Zone, and it levels buildings. The idea is it keeps players on edge, discourages camping and gets everyone moving - all across one of the game's smallest maps.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - Hawkinz

Season 6 kicks off with a bang by introducing the small but intense island of Karakin

With only a 2x2 field to work with, drops will be hotter, rotations will be riskier, and the excitement will be non-stop. Not even the cover of a building can save you from Karakin's relentless fury. New Breach Points offer alternative entry, penetrable walls allow clever enemies to fire before you can even see them, and the all new Black Zone lays waste to entire structures- and any survivors unfortunate enough to be caught inside.

Karakin isn't just action though, many secrets lie below the surface of the island for those with the right tools to explore. Welcome to Karakin.

While survivors are spending time on the beaches of Karakin, Vikendi will be taking a little vacation of its own. Don't worry, Vikendi will be back, and dare we say, better than ever!

Season 6 is available now, so Squad Up, Drop In, and Throw Down!

Note: In a future update we'll be increasing Karakin loot based on player feedback received during the testing period. We're working to push this update out soon and will share specific details once finalized.

For more details, see our complete patch notes here.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

Welcome to our guide to all of the PUBG glider spawns. One of the key risk/reward choices you need to make in any battle royale game is whether you're happy to cover long distances if that means alerting your remaining rivals. Now that the new Motor Glider has arrived for PUBG season 6, that gambit is even more acute.

That's because this bright yellow beast is loud, but you may need to make a last-gasp choice to get yourself out of a hot zone or an area at risk of being consumed by The Circle—if you can reach the necessary speed of 70km/h to take off. You must also fill the engine before it's started, so you'll need to hold your nerve. That said, it helps that the PUBG Motor Glider is a two-seater: one of you can pilot the thing with another providing covering fire.

But even if you decide to take the risk on piloting a Motor Glider, you'll need to know where you can find them. So, to rain down battle royale death from above, here's how many PUBG glider spawns there are, and where they're located.

How many PUBG glider spawns are there?

After a period of testing of the new vehicle, the number of locations in which you can find the glider has decreased. Originally, according to PUBG Labs, "we used to have 10 motor gliders spawned in 10 spawn locations, so 100% spawn rate on each location."

In other words, the glider spawn locations were effectively fixed, but now, once you approach a spawn point, it has a 25 percent chance of appearing now that the glider has transitioned to the live game: "We'll be changing this to 10 gliders randomly spawned in 40 spawn locations." That said, expect more testing, and potential spawn tweaks, to continue.

PUBG Motor Glider spawns

Thanks to PlayerIGN we know know the locations of all the glider spawn points. In the tweet above you can see the 40 each on Erangel and Miramar, the only two maps to feature the vehicle so far. Remember though, even if you are near one of these spots, there's only a 24 percent chance it'll be there right now. If you're lucky, buckle yourself in and enjoy an airborne chicken dinner on me.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' sixth season is due to begin soon, but ahead of its launch you can take it for a spin in the test server, along with Karain, a new fast-paced 64-player map. Check out some footage of the map in action above.

Karakin is a 2x2km map with five settlements on the coast and loads of big open spaces where you'll inevitably be sniped in front of a Twitch audience. PUBG Corp says you can expect Miramar's tension but the speed of Sanhok. The map's twist is that it's dynamic, featuring a random 'Black Zone' that transforms the areas it strikes.

When an area ends up in the Black Zone, buildings can be damaged or completely destroyed, turning somewhere once full of cover and buildings into a ruined wasteland. You'll have time to escape once you hear the siren, so you'll be able to survive even if the buildings can't. To add to the destruction, Karakin also features breach points that can be destroyed by sticky bombs, an item only available on the island. Breach points aren't just found on walls, either, so you can pull off some fancy assaults by coming in via the ceiling, surprising campers. Some walls can be penetrated by bullets, too.

PUBG's first flying vehicle, which players have been able to test in PUBG Labs, has also been added to Karakin, letting you soar above the chaos and, if you've brought a friend, they can rain down death and destruction while you pilot the thing. Pilots can also score some kills with skilful use of the vehicle's rotor blades.

There's also a new Survivor Pass, Shakedown, some matchmaking changes and other tweaks you can check out in the patch notes.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Imogen Beckhelling)

Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds new year action will see players getting to drop in on a brand new 64-player map, the island of Karakin. Set in a delightfully arid desert location, Karakin has completely destructible buildings thanks to an edgy new feature named Black Zone – a hazard that changes the map layout each match.

On top of this, players who enjoyed the Motor Glider featured on PUBG Labs last month will be thrilled to hear it hits live servers today. I’m sure it won’t be long now until you’re all swooping cinematically, dodging bullets and debris from all of those crumbling buildings.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PUBG's season 6 is upon us (don't worry, I've lost track too), and with it PUBG Corp is introducing a significant amount of new content. This includes a new map and weapons - at the cost of saying goodbye to Vikendi for a while, as the map has been temporarily removed from public matchmaking.

According to the patch notes, new map Karakin is a small 2x2km island providing "the tension of Miramar combined with the pace of Sanhok" for 64 players at a time. There's a mixture of long-range sniping in the mountains, tense urban combat, and claustrophobic underground scuffles to keep players on their toes.

A couple of features make this map stand out from the crowd: the first being sticky bombs - a throwable which can be used on breach points to root out campers. Equally, campers can use them to create windows, while explorers may find them useful in discovering the map's secret areas. A little something for everyone.

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed an issue where the Medieval Helmet skin was not visible when equipped by female characters
  • Fixed an issue where players were able to prone in shallow waters
  • Fixed a visual issue with various pants skins
  • Fixed an issue where some face/hair icon sizes were inconsistent in the lobby

Season 6 is upon us and it brings with it a brand new island to the Battlegrounds. Karakin has risen like its namesake from the sea to bring intense action and quick gameplay to PUBG. New dangers, new weapons and a whole new island await, so let’s drop into the action of Update 6.1.

NEW MAP: KARAKIN
Higher tension, faster pace: Welcome to Karakin.

Karakin is a 2×2 km island off the coast of Northern Africa. It’s an arid, rocky environment that provides wide-open terrain and challenging engagements. It’s small, fast, and dangerous: Expect the tension of Miramar combined with the pace of Sanhok. Karakin is a 64 players map.

Players should expect long distance rifle engagements in the mountains, tactical urban conflict, and claustrophobic underground combat. And with the introduction of the Black Zone, Karakin reveals its twist: a map that’s layout changes every match.

Black Zone (Karakin Only)

Our new hazard, the Black Zone only available in Karakin, levels buildings into smoking ruins.
  • The Black Zone is designed to push players out of the safety of a building.
  • The hazard is random: towns and compounds can be undamaged, totally flattened, and everything in between.
  • The mix of buildings and ruins evolves in real time throughout the match: Meaning don’t always expect that building you run to for cover to be there late in the match.
  • Remember, if you hear the siren, and you are inside that purple circle on the minimap- evacuate!

New Throwable: Sticky Bomb (Karakin Only)

To change up siege play, we’re introducing Breach Points which can be destroyed with Sticky Bombs in Karakin.

  • Certain walls and floors have breach points which can be destroyed with Sticky Bombs
  • This feature presents more tools for our players: For campers, it allows more sight lines/windows to be created
  • For squads going on the offensive however, there are new options for storming buildings- “Do we blast in through the back of the building, or through the roof- maybe both?” the choice is yours!
  • And for explorers, we’ve hidden many secret areas for those players with a spare Sticky Bomb or two, and a keen nose for loot

Finally, to make interior gun fights a little more interesting, we’ve added bullet penetration to our weakest walls in Karakin. Getting brief glimpses of your enemies through damaged drywall, and deciding to take the fight or regroup- gives players more options.

At PUBG we are dedicated to providing new experiences for you, the player, and pushing what’s possible in our genre. We can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself!

Karakin Loot Increase – 23rd January
We heard your feedback during the testing phase and initial launch of Karakin and have now implemented a hotfix to increase and rebalance loot on our newest Battleground.

To ensure you can drop in and loot up quickly above around, we’ve rebalanced loot spawns to improve your overall experience. There’ll now be much more loot to go around for you and your squad.

We understand and agree that feeling a need to rush and breach a tunnel each match to get that sweet, sweet loot just didn’t feel great. So, we’ve increased above-ground spawn rate of healing and boost items, as well as scopes to get you battle ready quicker. We hope this will allow you to explore Karakin more freely without feeling required to breach a tunnel just to find enough of that sweet, sweet loot to survive.

Please keep the feedback coming, it’s appreciated as always and we look forward to continually improving Karakin alongside our passionate community.

Detailed changes

  • Increased 2x, 3x, 4x scopes
  • Increased healing/boost items above ground
  • Modified ratio of total SR/DMR muzzle attachments due to increased spawn rate of those weapons
  • Decreased number of melee weapons, canted sights and magazine attachments
  • Removed Sawed-off from Karakin

    • Selecting auto as first and single as second preference will have weapons without auto fire be automatically set to single fire.

Matchmaking

Vikendi has been removed from public matches temporarily and will be replaced by Karakin.

Dev note: We’ve been thinking a lot about how we could add our new map without negatively impacting queue times, as Karakin would become the 5th map in our rotation and add additional queues to the list. Our solution is the introduction of rotating map slots. A rotating map slot is a non-permanent map slot that will change from time to time. The goal is to provide stable matchmaking times while keeping map choice fresh. For our first rotation, Vikendi will rotate out to make room for Karakin. Maps that are rotated out will still be available for play in custom games.

Speaking of Vikendi, since we launched the snowy slaughterhouse back in December of 2018, we’ve received a lot of feedback. Performance, spawn balance, and even buildings were all places with room for improvement, some of which we already attempted but we feel we can still do better.

That said, while Vikendi is on vacation we’ll be going in and doing a bigger revamp of the map than we’ve previously done. When it’s time for it to come back, there will be plenty of new stuff for you to explore and enjoy. Until then, trade in your snowballs for sticky bombs and hot drop into the new hotness! Additionally, we know many players love the Vikendi exclusive MP5K and G36C so we're looking to potentially add these weapons to the loot pool of another map in the future. We'll keep you updated once details have been confirmed.

  • When vaulting, sound outputs correct material sounds (Concrete, Metal, Wood)
Karakin known issue: Sound in and above bunkers isn't working as intended in certain situations. Currently, it can be difficult to distinguish the distance of players from your position while underground, or whether they're above or below ground while in the vicinity of a bunker.

We're working to resolve this issue and improve logic related to sound in and around bunkers. As this is a complex issue, it will take some time to be resolved and we expect to push the updated sound logic to live servers in the April update.

Vikendi
  • Further lowered the volume of wind sound effect in the moonlight

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS - Hawkinz

Welcome back to PUBG Labs intrepid survivors!

We hope everyone had fun flying the unfriendly skies above the Battlegrounds in our Motor Gliders. We've loved seeing your reactions to the winged wonders as you took to the air, and been more than impressed with many of your dog fighting abilities.

Thanks to the monumental amount of support we received for the Motor Glider we will be releasing it to Live Servers on January 15th. The majority of the mechanics for the aviary asset will remain largely the same as we described in our PUBG Labs: Motor Glider announcement with a few changes. Console players will be able to take flight with the launch of Season 6.
  • Motor Glider will be available on Erangel and Miramar
  • Motor Glider has two seats; one for pilot and one for passenger who can shoot and use any weapon from the backseat
  • Motor Glider will be spawned around the map
  • To takeoff, you must gain the necessary speed of 65 km/h then pitch up with the S key.
    • You'll start to take off automatically once you hit 70 km/h.
  • Motor Glider's fuel consumption rate is tied to the engine speed - the more throttle you apply, the faster you will run out of gas.
  • Motor Glider will be spawned with empty gas. Fuel up before starting the engine.
  • There's no maximum altitude you can reach, the sky is the limit! But engine will start losing power the higher the altitude you are at.
  • Controls:
    • Use W/S keys to control the pitch and A/D to control the roll of the aircraft
    • Adjust the throttle by holding Left Shift and Left Ctrl keys
    • Hold Spacebar when on the ground to engage handbrake

We will be adjusting the spawn rate to optimize where and how often the gliders spawn. During LABS, we used to have 10 motor gliders spawned in 10 spawn locations, so 100% spawn rate on each location. We'll be changing this to 10 gliders randomly spawned in 40 spawn locations, so a 25% spawn rate on each location. As this is a new content, we'd like to test the spawn balance, so the spawn rate is likely to change a few times.

The largest change to the way Motor Gliders operate is that we're challenging you to give it the gas. All Motor Gliders will start on empty to keep you on the edge of your seat until you're in the air. Can you get her fueled up before the enemy is on you?

There are many plans in the future for Motor Glider. Our first plan is to add key binding options for each controls. Please look forward to upcoming changes to be made on the flying vehicle.

Breaking It Down

Survivors that dropped into Motor Glider mode played on average 4 times and 55mins per day.

60% of the time the motor glider was destroyed via crashing, so you know - fly better.

The sharpshooters among you were able to bring down gliders 25% of the time with their gunshots. 13% of the time the Glider succumbed to the Redzone.

The fight for the glider led to a lot of players going down early in the match. An average of 30 people per match got their bells rung by enemy punches. 10 people per match were Motor Glider Roadkill.

By spawning the Motor Glider with no fuel players will be forced to loot first and take to the skies a little later.

We're finding the glider is a great early phase tool, but later in the game, the advantage is limited, so use the glider early and after Phase 2 you may want to keep it grounded.

As always, we'll be listening to player feedback to balance the features and availability of the Motor Glider.

Thanks,
The PUBG Team
