This is Playstyle Royale, where I head into Playerunknown s Battlegrounds and try to win my chicken dinner while adhering to arbitrary rules. This week, I m going with Godwhacker s excellent suggestion in the comments from last time:

Dump the Evidence .

You re allowed one kill with a weapon, but then it must be dropped, in order to outfox the Hampshire Constabulary who are fast catching up with you and your trail of murder. You can keep the usual four weapons in your inventory and switch between them, but each gun and any attachments must be disposed of after it s been used, ideally somewhere it can t be found easily. I m also going to embrace my role and try to take out every player I see – I wouldn t be much of a hunter if I didn t. As usual, I ve got five tries to reach the number one spot. Let s get to it!

Cowardice is a virtue. So says the team on this week’s RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show. That’s because our theme is “running away” – games that encourage you to flee from danger, or that give you a choice between fight and> flight. Adam will run from the soldiers of Arma or the post-apocalyptic antagonists of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Brendan will scarper from poor odds in For Honor or Overwatch, while Alice only pretends> to run away in Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, tricking her foes into giving chase before ambushing them like some kind of velociraptor. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

Intrepid dataminers have already uncovered guns, trucks and jet skis from PUBG's test server code, but it seems there's yet more gold in them hills/lines of ones and zeroes. 

According to Reddit user bizzfarts, certain locations on the shooter's incoming desert map are set to be renamed (so long, Murderlands), while three new weapons and a flare gun could be making their way into its grounds. 

Bizzfarts shares models of a Winchester 1894 lever-action rifle:

And a sawed off double-barrel shotgun (although bizzfarts notes this was found in "the pistol folder"):

Bizzfarts also says that while they could not locate a model, "there are sounds and [a] UI icon for a flare gun." It looks like this:

The appearance of these items of course doesn't guarantee their eventual inclusion in-game. 

Yesterday, the PUBG Twitter account officially revealed the DP-28 machine gun and AUG A3 bullpup assault rifle are now live in the game's test servers—while here's everything Chris learned about the new desert map following a recent trip to Bluehole's offices in South Korea.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been undergoing a lot of changes recently as developer Bluehole prepares for the release of PC version 1.0 and an Xbox One release. While features such as vaulting, killcam and improved physics are being tested on the game's PTR, a release date still hasn't been confirmed for version 1.0 and the highly anticipated new desert map.

However, it seems it won't be long until the desert map is ready. An image datamined from the game's files by serial reddit hound bizzfarts shows what appears to be the desert map's latest design, looking almost complete, with spanglish names and everything.

Unfortunately this means there is no more Murderland or Kill Box, but instead Santa Domingo, El Pozo and other poorly-translated spanish names.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

Two weeks ago, we learned Tencent was still pursuing the acquisition of PUBG creator Bluehole—having had a bid turned down prior to the online shooter's runaway success. Now, it appears the Chinese tech giant has secured the rights to officially release PUBG in China. 

Last month, the Chinese content watchdog criticised PUBG for deviating from "socialist core values". According to Reuters, this consideration is central to Tencent's takeover, with the latter saying this in a statement: 

"[Tencent] will make adjustment to content... and make sure they accord with socialist core values, Chinese traditional culture and moral rules."

In turn, it's thought this iteration of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will offer "healthy, positive cultural and value guidance, especially for underage users."

To this end, games industry person and Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad tweeted the following earlier today (h/t Venturebeat):

If you missed the last brief test of Playerunknown s Battlegrounds 1.0, which is focused on vaulting and ballistic changes, don t throw away your parachute just yet. PUBG Corp has fired up the test servers again this week, with plans to do the same next week. This week s test will run until 8PM CEST on the 24th. Time to start jumping over some fences.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' second test server for its PC version 1.0 went live earlier, however has since been pulled to undergo "emergency maintenance". Whenever it's reinstated (at the time of writing, the game's official Twitter feed suggests around 12noon GMT), it'll bring with it two new weapons.  

(Update: test servers are now again live.)  

Found scattered around the Erangel island, the DP-28 is a light machine gun that carries 47 rounds and supports 4x scopes and RDS sights. The AUG A3, on the other hand, is a bullpup assault rifle that houses 5.56mm rounds and is a care package-exclusive.

As you might expect, some players aren't best pleased with the test server maintenance delay—while others have voiced concerns with the servers' new UI and fonts.

Animation

  • The healing period for bandages has been reduced to 4.5 seconds from 8.5 seconds. The casting time and the amount of health restored are the same as before.
  • Players can now parachute and land on certain areas that were not previously accessible, including the outskirts of the island
  • Added markings for zeroing distances on 15x scope reticle texture
  • Added new 4x reticle for 7.62mm weapons

  • Added 2 new weapons.
    - Added DP-28. DP-28 will be spawned in world. It has a 47-round pan magazine for 7.62mm. Sights and a 4x scope can be attached. It has low firing rate but a long effective firing range with high damage
    - Added AUG A3. The AUG A3 can be obtained from care packages. It's a variant of a bull-pup assault rifle that uses a 5.56mm 30-round magazine as standard and 40 rounds when extended. It has high muzzle velocity, high rate of fire and low vertical recoil.
  • Kar98k will no longer be included in care packages. World spawn rate of Kar98k will remain the same

UI/UX



  • Applied a new font for English
  • Improved designs for in-game HUD, option window, inventory, menu screen, and system message box
  • Improved Solo/Team Play UI
    - Moved health bars of team member(s) from the top left corner to the bottom left corner
    - Changed colors and markings in the mini map, world Map, and team list UI
    - Added indicators for team members to check their status (vehicle, parachuting, alive/dead, DBNO, connection status, etc.)
  • Improved interaction HUD
    - If there is no more room left in the backpack, the font will turn red to show that items cannot be picked up
  • Improved the mini map and the world map
    - Decreased the saturation of the mini map to further emphasize information of team members
    - Adjusted the colors of the world map to increase visibility of markers and other information
    - Players can check team members’ FOV direction through the world map and the mini map
    - When team members get on the same vehicle, a single indicator will appear
  • Moved the kill log from the bottom left corner to the top right corner
  • Modified the design of the health bar to show the point for 75%. The bar will not turn red when health is below 75%
  • Added killcam feature that can be found in Settings. Now players can check killcams in the result screen
    - For Duo and Squad modes, killcam can be checked after all team members have died

Sound
  • Changed the lobby music
  • Improved vehicle engine sounds
  • Added a sound that will be played around the edge of the blue zone
  • Added three different sound effects for the red zone
    - Sounds of bombs being released
    - Sounds of bombs falling
    - Sounds of bombs exploding
  • Added sounds when character jumps into water. Sound will be different based on the speed

Language
  • Added four languages: Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Mexico) and Chinese (Traditional)

Bug fixes
  • Fixed camera jittering for passenger sitting on the back of a motorcycle with sidecar
  • Fixed the issue where animations are not played when bandages are used consecutively
  • Removed the pink circle that appeared on certain buildings when parachuting
  • Fixed the issue where shooting was possible when vaulting
  • Greatly reduced blurriness of the reticle while in ADS mode
