Lethal League Blaze - TR_Dion
Look sharp!

We're baking some delicious bite-sized new stuff for you guys. So smell the freshness and don't burn yourself. These are coming up, so they're still hot!

We're going to be adding 2 new special outfits for one of the characters. Who might this be..?

For the hardcore, the ability to spectate matches will soon be possible.

Just host an online match and select the camera icon on the player you want to have as a spectator. You can have multiple players be spectators and even the host can choose to spectate.

New languages are going to be supported (namely Traditional and Simplified Chinese). The amount of matches required for the 'mythical' Retro stages to unlock has been brought down to some more reasonable levels and the Sparks you get per match are increased. Unlockable beats will be extended to play in the lobby as well.

This bombardment is arriving somewhere next week!

Shoving aside the new stuff, there will be another online Blaze tournament on the 24th. You can already sign up on https://tgtourneys.challonge.com/blaze1. More on that, soon enough!

Oh boy... we got big ol' bag of ones and zeros for you guys that I'm sure you fine virtual fellas will appreciate. I'll tell ya, I'm looking out over this digital prairie of electronic anti-gravity sports and, to be honest, it brings a tear to my left eye, though blinded in the great Shine City uprising some years ago. Hot damn, enough of that! Let's get right into it.

Ranked mode is seeing some additions. I especially like the option to quickly 'Continue' into a new match with either your last opponent or somebody else. The matchmaking has also been tweaked to look for more similar rank players. Bigger changes to the Ranked mode are planned for the next season, when the whole leaderboard will be reset to give everyone a chance again. For that, we're looking at around December for now, so be aware!

If you want to get at edge on the rest, know that we often do a public beta for upcoming changes. Join the official Discord server at discord.gg/reptilehideout and read the pins in the #betablaze channel. But remember to switch back once you're done, because you can't play with players who are not in the beta.

One last itty bitty thing. I sneakily added a match counter in the bottom of the main menu. These are your total matches played online AND offline.

Patch Notes 1.08

Online
- Matchmaking filters for Ranked are now more geared towards similar rank opponents
- No freeze anymore if a player disconnected just before match started
- Things don't go wrong anymore if host changes game mode while other player still in result screen
- Fixed players not seeing each other if joining a lobby at exactly the same time (causing desync at match start)
- Added a 'Continue' option after a Ranked match (you'll enter the lobby to find a new match)

Gameplay
- Fixed Nitro's grab guard on second special hit
- Added an option to do turn-around bunts in the air by holding up in the same way as the neutral swing
- Fixed CPU's refusing to hit the ball when they get certain powerups

General
- Fixed left shoulder button not working in online lobbies
- Added the total matches played statistic to the main menu

Then the 1.071 hotfix from last time didn't get notes, so here's a recap with the more interesting stuff:

- Fixed Straitjacket Alert not unlocking
- Latch now regains his double jump if he cancels his wall-swing with a special
- Added missing Baldi Konijn in the credits, a magnificent concept artist who designed the backgrounds for us. Check him out: https://www.artstation.com/baldi-konijn

That's right we jumped straight to 1.07.

The most important fix is the one with Quickmatch where some players needed to wait a lot longer while there were people readily available. Also the missing Frank Klepacki track in Showcase (sorry Frank!) and tons of small stuff in the visuals and gameplay. Scroll down past all the brabble to see the changes in detail!

Even though Ranked mode was a bonus that we didn't exactly plan to have on launch, we're very happy how avidly the mode is played (the please-take-a-break-for-your-health kind of avidly). I'm sure everyone is aware that Ranked mode will evolve over time, but thanks again for your patience.

Another thing of note is that modding is blowing up, with a big load of texture mods leading the way. Head over to #modding in the official Discord (discord.gg/reptilehideout) to learn how to do it too. Here's a showcase of some gems already:

Then there's a Blaze tournament coming or should I say 'Doom Is Coming'... This Saturday on the 3rd of November all bets are off for this Lethal League Blaze tourney handled by your local Hangboy at 3PM EDT sharp on the official Discord in #competitive (discord.gg/reptilehideout).

There's Megabyte Punch Steam keys to be won! Take a look at the rest of the rules over here:
https://challonge.com/DoomComing
Note that Beta testers from pre-release are not allowed to join this tournament.

Lethal League Blaze

At one point during our first Lethal League Blaze session, James screamed for five seconds straight. It's a natural response when you've just hit a ball so hard it's moving faster than light with the power to liquidate matter, and then someone else hammers it in mid-air and suddenly the screen is flashing and colors are inverted like you've just punched a hole in reality.

Lethal League Blaze gets intense, is what I'm saying.

This half Pong, half fighting game is the sequel to 2014's Lethal League, and the basics are unchanged. You choose a character from a bizarre roster, including a couple robots (one is a boombox), an alligator man, and a floating lady with an afro and a giant hammer. You smack a ball around the arena, adding speed with each hit until it's traveling at supersonic speeds. Get hit, and you're shredded. The whole thing is soaked in a Jet Set Radio-inspired "street" aesthetic, with music to match (including some tunes from Jet Set composer Hideki Naganuma).

There was a purity I loved in Lethal League. Get hit and you're dead. There were just two buttons: swing and bunt. Hit the ball until everyone else dies. There was enough depth hidden in those mechanics for Lethal League to end up at the fighting game tournament EVO, but it was also simple enough to play with four people on a couch and have a great time.

Blaze is both more complex and more forgiving than its predecessor: it adds a "throw" move to grab and redirect the ball and health meters for characters, so you can survive more than one hit. This means matches can last longer, though they're still usually finished within a minute. The faster the ball is moving, the more damage it does, and by the time it's supersonic you don't wanna get hit. There are also items, now, which modify the ball to make it invisible or controllable in mid-air or splinter into multiball.

1v1 finishes get dramatic.

The health bars felt like a big change at first, but after a few minutes I really liked them: they let matches develop a bit more, making room for surprising upsets. Same with the throw: it's simple enough that it doesn't overcomplicate things, but another variable in a game that moves at this speed can make big waves. It adds depth to the split-second decision making running through my head every time I try to hit the ball.

Should I go for a basic hit, which will be easier to predict and hit back in my face? Should I try to bunt and then hit the ball again for the follow up, building up speed? Or should I throw it, changing up the timing just enough to catch someone blinking?

I am not good at Lethal League Blaze, but it's so satisfying on a visceral hitting-things-and-watching-shit-happen level that I don't care when I lose. It's all worth it for pulling off that one blinding speed rebound.

With the first Lethal League, I never really felt a compelling path to get better playing solo. It was a great game to play with friends, but I wasn't going to practice. Blaze, though, has a story mode, which adds some fun, if simple lore to its world and characters. As you'd expect, the lethal league ball game is an illegal, underground sport, outlawed by The Man after someone died playing.

There's also a light progression system, with points you can use to unlock more characters, arenas and music. It's just enough to make me want to play through the story and get better at Lethal League in the process.

My only disappointment so far is there's no way to add bots when you're playing with other people online; with a party of three, I'd like to be able to add in a fourth for team matches. At least online works well: in all the matches I've played so far, I haven't had any issues with lag.

To get a bit hyperbolic at the end here, I'll let this Steam review close things out:

"A lot of people ask me,'If Perfect is so goodwhy haven't they made a Perfect 2?'Well thats because they just skipped to Perfect 5,and that's Blaze."~Wise Old Man

Play Lethal League Blaze.

Lethal League Blaze is a springy, frenetic future-sport played by an underground league of robots, skaters, mercenaries and a sentient boombox. Imagine baseball, but then strip away all the parts that don t involve whacking a ball, replacing them with violent duels between two to four brawlers. In these duels, the baseball is the sole weapon. That might be underselling it. The ball is a relentless, physics-defying missile that, at full force, can almost be everywhere at once. Few other games make hitting things, either balls or people, this immensely satisfying.

An indirectly fought Smash Bros? Perhaps an extreme sports pong for up to four players? Team Reptile’s Lethal League is still a multiplayer fave in many circles. Its sequel, Lethal League Blaze, launched today replacing sprites with 3D models, fleshing out its world with a branching single-player story mode and bulking out its local and online multiplayer with new options. Below, a trailer with some funky fresh beats, a peek at how intense high-level play can be, and some quick thoughts from the preview build I’ve been in the batting cage with.

Lethal League Blaze is dropping next Wednesday on the 24th of October!

We've been sending out signals on all frequencies with the new characters, stages, modes and styles. One such message is a full online match without commentary:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNbvx6MFKbk

Of course, it wouldn't be a sequel without new characters. Here's is a roundup of two contenders joining the Lethal League if you're not familiar with them yet.

Introducing Jet

Jet is an inline skater with a shark jetpack and a bubbly personality and style. She rules the bay area streets where even the cops fall for her charms. She uses her quick kicks to play and her skates have a special mechanism that can encase the ball in a bubble.

Then, there's Grid

A made man from System, a crime syndicate from out of town. He is well respected in his family for his physique and ruthlessness. As an Electronian, he was born with several electrical components and he is outfitted with a bodysuit to enhance his abilities.

That's all for now! Hope you guys are looking forward to the game (and have it wishlisted!). We're sure excited to see what happens when everyone gets their claws on it!

Hey we've got a brand spankin' new trailer!
https://youtu.be/3Sc-6GOrGNw

We had to get the man himself, Hideki Naganuma, to compose a track specifically for the game of course. The full version of 'Ain't nothing like a funky beat' will smack you in the face very badly so be prepared for when the game releases on the 24th of October on this here platform and in spring 2019 on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch!
