World of Warships - WoWs Admiral

The Tech Tree will soon welcome a new branch of ships. In Update 0.8.10, the Regia Marina’s cruisers are scheduled to exit Early Access and become freely available for all players to research.

In this article, we'll cover the specific gameplay features of the new ships!

Ship Branch Peculiarities ● Commander Skills and Upgrades ● Tactics

Ship Branch Peculiarities
Semi-armor-piercing shells
Please note: the article indicates SAP shell ricochet angles applicable to the release of Update 0.8.10. In Update 0.8.9, shells fired by any Tier III–IX ships have a chance of ricocheting at angles of 65 degrees or higher.
Starting from Tier II of the branch, the Regia Marina's researchable cruisers come armed with semi-armor-piercing (SAP) shells instead of HE shells.

SAP shell features
  • SAP shells may ricochet after hitting their target, but they have quite favorable ricochet angles—even better than those of the AP shells fired by British and American cruisers:
    • Shells fired by II Nino Bixio have a chance of ricocheting at angles of 80 degrees or higher, and are guaranteed to ricochet at angles of 85 degrees or higher.
    • Shells fired by any Tier III–IX ships have a chance of ricocheting at angles of 70 degrees or higher, and are guaranteed to ricochet at angles of 80 degrees or higher.
    • Shells fired by X Venezia have a chance of ricocheting at angles of 75 degrees or higher, and are guaranteed to ricochet at angles of 80 degrees or higher.
  • If your hit doesn't ricochet, the armor penetration mechanics are similar to those of HE shells: the thickness of the armor at the point of impact is compared with the shell penetration value. The shell deals damage if the penetration value is higher than, or equal to the thickness of the armor.
  • SAP shells can penetrate thicker armor and cause greater damage than HE shells. The exact penetration value depends on the shell’s caliber, and the damage is determined by the shell's caliber and speed.
  • They can't overpenetrate targets.
  • They can't start fires on enemy ships.
  • SAP shells have no limit in terms of the damage they can cause to destroyers.
Before choosing which particular shell type to use for your attack, consider your target. SAP shells are most efficient against destroyers, battleships, and cruisers, with the latter being positioned at an angle to your ship. AP shells perform best against any cruisers that leave their broadsides exposed. If an enemy ship is positioned at an angle to you, SAP shells are preferential: when hitting the ship's front or aft ends and superstructures, they can deal impressive damage. However, the heavy damage they can cause is offset by their inability to set fires on enemy ships. Choosing the right shell for each situation and evaluating the target's armor are vital skills to learn when mastering the Italian cruisers' gameplay.

Consumables
  • If you come under concentrated fire or want to quickly get out of the enemy’s line of fire, use the Exhaust Smoke Generator which is available on Italian cruisers starting at Tier V. Unlike the standard Smoke Generator, Exhaust Smoke Generator will continuously surround the ship for the duration of the consumable’s action time, regardless of the speed at which she is going. But beware: while under the cover of smoke, your ship's spotting range decreases, and, when firing, its detectability range will increase to a certain value, meaning that it’s still possible to be detected by nearby enemies.
  • Starting at Tier V, you can choose between the Spotting Aircraft and the Fighter consumables.
  • Starting at Tier IX, the Repair Party consumable becomes available.
  • Unlike most ships of their type, Italian cruisers aren't equipped with the Hydroacoustic Search or Surveillance Radar consumables, so you should pay greater attention to the Minimap in order to track enemy destroyers and avoid sudden torpedo attacks.
Specifications
The specifications of Italian cruisers emphasize their predisposition to long-distance battles.
  • The high maneuverability and speed of the Regia Marina's ships are the two important advantages of the new branch. The farther away an enemy ship is, the easier it is to maneuver away from her salvoes or brace for impact at a sharp angle.
  • Torpedoes act more as auxiliary weapons for the ships of the new branch. Due to the small number of torpedo tubes and the torpedoes’ slow movement speed, you shouldn't rely on them too much. However, their long range and quick reload will allow you to seal a strategically important strait or make any enemy ships hidden in smoke nervous.
  • Starting at Tier VI, Italian cruisers are armed with 203 mm guns that can boast enjoyable ballistics. Their gameplay is based on the special features of their SAP shells, relatively long reload time of their main battery, and significant damage they can inflict per salvo. If the target and moment for a shot are chosen correctly, you can inflict an immense amount of damage to your enemies.
Venezia
X Venezia was built in consideration of the technical solutions used during the construction of Italian light cruisers and the last series of the Regia Marina's battleships. The ship was based on the technical designs initially proposed by the Ansaldo company’s shipbuilders for the Spanish Navy. The location of the turrets is worth a special mention: had they been placed in a traditional manner, the dimensions of the citadel and the ship itself would have been too large. To mitigate this, the turrets were given unusual positioning. This enabled a reduction in the size of the ship and its citadel at the cost of partially limiting the firing angles of the second turret. Her fifteen 203 mm caliber guns can cause excellent damage per salvo, while stronger armor compared to that of the other ships of her branch will help her to make it through intense battles.

Commander Skills and Upgrades
For a Commander with 10 skill points we recommend:
  • Priority Target
  • Adrenaline Rush
  • Superintendent
  • Concealment Expert
This set of skills will be useful on ships starting at Tier V. Any further development of your Commander will depend on your play style, goals in battle, and ship tier.

We recommend paying attention to the following skills:
  • Expert Loader will allow you to quickly switch to AP shells and inflict significant damage to any enemies exposing their broadsides.
  • Preventive Maintenance will reduce the chances of damage being caused to your engines and rudders, and maintain your ship's maneuverability.
  • Torpedo Acceleration and Torpedo Armament Expertise will be useful if you're used to relying on torpedoes in battle.
  • Jack of All Trades will speed up the slow reload speed of consumables on Italian cruisers.
  • Due to the absence of the Hydroacoustic Search consumable, Italian cruisers are quite vulnerable to destroyers. Vigilance and Radio Location will allow you to assess where to expect a torpedo attack from and give you a few extra seconds to evade the attack.
The following upgrades will be useful:
  • Main Armaments Modification 1
  • Steering Gears Modification 1
  • Aiming Systems Modification 1
  • Propulsion Modification 2
  • Concealment System Modification 1
  • Main Battery Modification 3

Please note: since Italian cruisers have no HE shells, skills such as Inertia Fuse for HE Shells and Demolition Expert will have no effect. Also, the Smoke Generator Modification 1 special upgrade can't be mounted on these ships.
Tactics
  • Evaluate the situation! Having no Hydroacoustic Search readily available, Italian cruisers are vulnerable to torpedo attacks. Stay close to an ally capable of spotting torpedoes and enemy destroyers in good time to compensate for this disadvantage. With such support, these new ships will turn from victims into hunters—their significant damage per salvo will enable them to quickly send any detected enemy destroyer to the bottom of the sea.
  • When facing enemy cruisers, wait for them to make a mistake. A salvo with AP shells against their broadside will inflict impressive damage. No time to change shell type? SAP shells will be effective, too.
  • If you’re caught in concentrated fire, make use of nearby islands and the Exhaust Smoke Generator. This consumable will allow you to change course undetected or escape a threatening situation. Don't forget that it has quite a long reload time and using it with the intention of firing from behind the cover of smoke isn't very effective—the screen it produces dissipates quite quickly.
  • Use torpedoes to protect yourself in case of proximity to enemy ships and force them to maneuver. The fast reload time and long range of your torpedoes will enable you to "comb" any smokes in which your enemies might be hiding.
  • Keep moving—your ship’s good maneuverability will allow you to avoid being hit.

Italian cruisers, with their unusual shells and Smoke Generator, can provide new tactical opportunities. Prepare to take advantage of these new possibilities in battle and take them out to sea!

Italian Cruisers: Part 2

The Italian arc continues! With the release of Update 0.8.10, the branch of Italian cruisers will become available for everyone to research.
Update 0.8.10 welcomes a new collection dedicated to the Italian Navy. The collection consists of four sections, with four elements in each.

The reward for completing the sections is 1 day of Premium Account.

The rewards for completing the entire collection are an achievement and the unique Italian Commander, Luigi Sansonetti, who possesses the following talents:
  • Scorched by Fury—activates when you score the Confederate achievement and reduces the reload time of the main battery guns by 15%.
  • Triumphant Haul—activates after you destroy an enemy ship and extends the main battery’s firing range by 8%. Can be activated once per battle.
  • Desperate Resistance—activates after you score 100 main battery shell hit ribbons and prolongs the action time of all consumables by 10%. Can be activated once per battle.
Besides the aforementioned talents, this Italian Commander enjoys two enhanced skills: Expert Loader and Torpedo Acceleration.

During Update 0.8.10, containers with collectibles can be obtained as follows:
  • Up to six containers for completing Directives of the event
  • Up to 29 containers in the Armory using Mediterranean Tokens—a new temporary resource
  • Up to three containers from Daily Shipments
Elements of the collection can only be obtained from the relevant event containers. In Update 0.9.4, we're planning to make the “Resolute and Rapid” containers available in exchange for Coal in the Armory. This way you'll still be able to complete the collection and get Commander Luigi Sansonetti in case you miss anything during Update 0.8.10! The cost of the containers will be announced later.
The new game event tasks you with completing 40 missions spread across four Directives. You can start progressing in the next Directive only once you've completed six missions from the previous one. To obtain the final reward, you must complete six missions of the fourth Directive.

Having completed all four Directives, players will receive six “Resolute and Rapid” containers and 572 Mediterranean Tokens, the latter of which can be exchanged in the new "Italian Navy" section of the Armory for one of the following rewards:
  • 14 days of Premium Account
  • 143 Regia Marina camouflage patterns
  • 12,825,000 credits
  • Up to 470 signals
  • 19 “Resolute and Rapid” containers, which drop elements of the same-name collection, Free XP, and Coal
Directives are available to players with open access to combat missions in their Service Record. Novice players will have to play 70 battles in any accessible battle type to unlock them.
Mediterranean Tokens will only be available throughout Update 0.8.10. When Update 0.8.11 goes live, they will only be obtainable from “Resolute and Rapid” Premium containers. With the release of Update 0.9.0, all Mediterranean Tokens will be converted to credits at a rate of 1 : 22,500.

Raid for the Filth

The Portal to the lost dimension will remain open until November 27, so you still have a chance to undertake a Raid for the Filth! As you might remember, three teams with three players in each fight against one another, as well as against a horde of dark forces controlled by AI. The objective is to collect a special resource—Filth. You can exchange Filth for various rewards in a special section of the Armory.
Please note: when this event battle mode is over, the monster ships will remain in your Port until Update 0.8.11 goes live, but you won't be able to enter battle playing them.

Ranked Battles

Starts: Wed. 27 Nov. 10:00 CET (UTC+1)
Ends: Mon. 23 Dec. 09:30 CET (UTC+1)

The Fourteenth Season of Ranked Battles is set to commence soon, to be played with Tier X ships in an 8 vs. 8 format. A limit of one aircraft carrier per team is set for these battles. The main reward remains the same—5,500 Steel! Ranked Battles will be fought on the Shards, Northern Lights, Trident, Haven, Greece, and Riposte maps in Domination mode. The Season’s details will be published separately in a dedicated article.

We have also updated the matchmaker by introducing a limit on the number of battleships per team—three at most—for Ranked Battles and Ranked Sprints. If there aren’t enough suitable ships to complete the teams, and the waiting time the first player in the queue has spent exceeds 4 minutes and 10 seconds, then each team can be completed with up to four battleships.

Game Balance Changes

Italian Tier III–IX cruisers:
  • The angle that’s used as the starting point for checking a SAP shell hit for a ricochet has been increased from 65 to 70 degrees.
This change will make SAP shells more effective against ships that are positioned at an acute angle.

Visual and Other Enhancements

We are continuing to update the maps and Ports so that they conform to the new lighting model and enhanced HDR technology. In Update 0.8.10, the visuals of the Solomon Islands, Ring, New Dawn, Hotspot, Two Brothers, Shards, Estuary, Haven, Archipelago, and Land of Fire maps; and Ocean and Saint Petersburg Ports have been improved.
     0.8.9
     0.8.10

The special visual style of the VII Eastern Dragon, VII Southern Dragon, and ARP ships has been singled out as a separate permanent camouflage providing standard combat bonuses. It's also possible to mount special upgrades and other camouflages, with the exception of permanent ones, on these ships. When you hide ships’ special exteriors in the Additional Content settings menu, this camouflage will be demounted.

The gun sight reticule has been switched to utilize new technology, which opens the doorway to future changes in the game. Its visuals now look neater and cleaner.

List of changes
  • Removed horizontal lines spreading from the the ship to the horizon.
  • Removed two vertical lines from both sides of the reticule.
  • Removed armament angle values from the sight reticules for certain torpedo launchers and guns.
  • Stopped the reticule shaking that occurred when you turned the battle camera within a range between the ship and the horizon. Now, the reticule will always be positioned in the center of the screen.

Co-op Battles Matchmaker

Update 0.8.10 brings matchmaker improvements for Co-op Battles:
  • Battles will be played in a 9 vs. 9 format.
  • Any incomplete teams will be complemented with a much wider range of bot ships.
These changes are aimed at making this battle type more interesting.

Besides that, we’re introducing limitations in battles for the maximum number of ships allowed from the highest tier, and minimum number of ships from the lowest tier. These limitations depend on the battle tier and waiting time in the queue.

Example: it's now impossible to have one Tier VIII ship in battle with the rest of the ships being from Tier X. We’re planning to introduce similar improvements to the Random Battles matchmaker in future.

Armory

The Armory now offers VII Błyskawica in exchange for 51,000 Coal. This Polish destroyer flies the flag of Europe and is notable for its maneuverability, effective torpedoes, and artillery that’s quite powerful for a Tier VII destroyer.

Key features
  • Excellent speed of 39 knots.
  • An impressive pool of HP for a destroyer.
  • Seven rapid-fire 120 mm guns with a good reach and comfortable ballistics.
  • Effective torpedoes with an 8 km reach and fast reload time of 70 seconds.
  • Extra credits per battle and 50% more XP provided by the camouflage.
The Armory now offers the unique historical Commander, Nikolay Kuznetsov, who is exchangeable for 175,000 Coal and possesses the unique Emergency Reserve and Will to Victory talents, as well as the Jack of All Trades enhanced skill. A detailed description of Commander Nikolay Kuznetsov is available in the Armory.

Two Pan-Asian commanders who possess Demolition Expert and Survivability Expert enhanced skills have also been introduced in the Armory. Quán Róng is exchangeable for 35,000 Coal, and Dà Róng for 1,500 doubloons. Both Commanders come with 10 skill points and a specialization for I Chengan.

Battle Economics

The last round of changes to the interactions between aircraft carriers and AA defenses were those introduced in Update 0.8.7. The combat performance indicators of this ship type are the same as those of other ship types, but due to their gameplay peculiarities, carriers tend to earn more XP. As a result of this, we made a decision to change the amount of XP and credits that Tier VIII and Tier X carriers earn:
  • X Midway: –5% to average XP earned and +5% to average amount of credits earned
  • X Hakuryū, X Audacious: –10% to average XP earned
  • All Tier VIII carriers: –10% to average XP earned in battles that ended up in a defeat
  • All Tier X carriers: –15% to average XP earned in battles that ended up in a defeat
These changes will also affect the results that carriers demonstrate in Ranked Battles: with the same combat performance shown, the carriers will earn the same amount of XP as other ship types. As a result, the carriers' chances of keeping a star after a defeat will be no higher than those of other ships.

Content Additions and Changes

Added the Festive Cake Flag dedicated to the second anniversary of World of Warships’ release on Steam, and the 303 Squadron permanent camouflage pattern for VII Błyskawica that was created as part of the Camouflage Design Contest by player Jonbloor7 from the NA server. Details on how to obtain them will be published on the website.

Added Regia Marina emblems. They can be obtained in the same way as the emblems of other nations—you need to gain a certain number of victories playing ships of Tier VIII–X in which you are among the Top-3 XP earners.

Added content dedicated to Black Friday: VII Scharnhorst B, VII Sims B, IX Alaska B, and VIII Graf Zeppelin B. Besides that, for all Black ships including those from last year, we added commemorative flags, Commanders, patches, and backgrounds. Details on how to receive them will be published on the website.

The following ships have been added for testing by developers, supertesters, and community contributors: V Hawkins, VI Devonshire, VII Surrey, VIII Bedford, IX Drake, X Goliath, VI London, VIII Odin, and VIII Siliwangi.

Other Changes and Improvements

  • Added the following categories for flags in the Exterior tab: Awarded, Commemorative, and Special.
  • Fixed the erroneous description of X Conqueror in the Port.
  • Now, besides hits by aerial torpedoes and bombs, the completion criteria for Task 3 of Mission 5 from the "Hit hard! Hit fast! Hit often!" Campaign also includes rocket hits.
  • Updated the following section names in the Armory: "Ships" renamed to "Ships for Resources" and "Premium Ships" renamed to "Ships for Doubloons".
  • It's no longer possible to mount the AA Guns Modification 1 upgrade on ships that don’t have long-range AA defenses. This upgrade will be demounted free of charge from all such ships and stored in the Inventory when the Update is released.
  • Added new voiceover languages: Chinese (Simplified, Singapore), Spanish, and Spanish (Mexico).
  • Adjusted the sound volume for a flight of aircraft when it's starting an attack approach or finishing an attack.
  • Expendable camouflage patterns are now sorted in the correct way when a player obtains or purchases them.
  • The reasons for points being added are now displayed on the point-scoring screen in the Hall of Fame after a Ranked Battle is finished. This screen isn’t displayed when a player scores 0 points.
  • When space-themed camouflages are used, except for Bionic, the sounds of the main battery reloading and fires burning will be replaced with special ones.
  • The Infernal camouflage can now be mounted on VIII Cossack.
  • Minor improvements have been made to the Infernal camouflage for various ships.
  • Updated the effects for 128 mm L/61 SK C/42 secondary battery guns
  • Fixed the position of the AA guns on destroyer VIII Kiev's hull B.
  • Fixed the position of the AA gun enclosures for VIII Kii when she has the camouflage designed by Makoto Kobayashi mounted.
  • Fixed the free look camera in battle for V Raimondo Montecuccoli and VI Trento.
  • Fixed the camera position for VIII Kaga's bombers that prevented the player from seeing the aiming reticule during an attack approach.
  • Fixed the camera position for the Signals section of the Exterior tab for III Fusilier.
  • 40 mm/39 QF Mark VIII AA guns were renamed as 40 mm/39 QF Mk VIII AA guns.
  • The auxiliary range finders for VI Trento now rotate when the main battery turrets rotate.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the relevant sound from being played when a player received a collectible item.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented some voice messages from being played back when a player selected the Azur Lane voiceover modification.
  • Fixed a bug that enabled aircraft to fly through ship superstructures when the Fighter consumable was used on X Hindenburg.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the casemate and citadel athwartship armor to be mistakenly counted twice for VIII Bayard.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the display of the Engine Boost consumable’s effects for ships mounted with the Bionic camouflage.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the Type 3 camouflage to be mounted on Arpeggio ships when a player opted to hide the special exteriors of such ships.
World of Warships - WoWs Admiral

In Update 0.8.10, the new “Resolute and Rapid” collection dedicated to the Italian Navy is set to appear.

This provides an excellent opportunity to refresh your memory about the available in-game collections and why it’s worthwhile to complete them.

Why Should I Complete Collections? ● How Can I Complete Collections? ● What Collections and Rewards are Available? ● The “Resolute and Rapid” Collection
Why Should I Complete Collections?
Collections are an excellent way to discover some interesting historical facts and obtain some desirable rewards along the way in the form of permanent camos, Commanders, and other valuable in-game items and abilities.

Collections are designed to inform players about the history of the naval forces, significant operations, and famous historical figures. Sometimes “unhistorical” collections appear in the game as well. They may be dedicated to collaborations with other brands (for example, the collection inspired by anime series High School Fleet), or focus on the World of Warships game itself.

Collections are made up of various elements: coats of arms of warships and combat units; items dedicated to renowned personalities; weapons, ships and aircraft; insignias; and much more. Each image is accompanied by a detailed description. For players’ convenience, elements are divided into thematic sections, and when each collection section is completed, an additional reward is unlocked. When all the elements of a collection or section are in place, a window informing the player about the associated reward is displayed. The collection is marked with an icon stating that it’s "Complete," which means you can return to it anytime to read the information about its elements.

How Can I Complete Collections?
Where can I find my collections?
In the Profile section of the Port. You gain access to each collection after obtaining its first element.

Please note: the Collections tab won't be displayed if you have no collection items.

Where can I get collection items?
In most cases, you'll find collection items in containers of the same name. Clicking on a collection item that was dropped from a container will transfer you to the screen of the corresponding collection. But there are exceptions—for example, the items from a collection dedicated to World of Warships Anniversary in 2017 were issued for special achievements earned in battle.

What is a subscription?
You can subscribe to some of the collections. This way you can choose which large collections you want to actively collect. You can obtain the first elements of these collections in special containers. By activating a subscription, you’ll be able to find the rest of the collectibles in the following containers: More Credits, More Signals and Camouflages, More Consumables, More Resources and Try Your Luck. You can only subscribe to one collection at a time under the Profile tab.

What is a duplicate?
When completing a collection, it’s possible to obtain an item you already have—this is called a “duplicate.” When you have a certain number of duplicates from the same collection, you can exchange them for any item you’re still missing. For that, you need to select a vacant slot in an album and confirm that you want to exchange your duplicates for this missing item in the window that appears. The cost of such an exchange depends on the collection, but it’s usually 2–5 duplicates per item. Once a collection is complete, any remaining duplicates of that collection are automatically exchanged for credits. The exact exchange rate depends on the collection. Thus, you can decide whether you want to obtain the main reward for collecting all the elements as soon as possible, or prefer to get more duplicates to earn more credits.

What Collections and Rewards are Available?
There are currently 11 collections available in the game. The items of these can be obtained from containers of the same name in the Armory in exchange for Coal. Exception: Yamamoto Isoroku.

Yamamoto Isoroku

This collection is dedicated to the biography of Yamamoto Isoroku, Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The rewards for completing the sections are Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya containers and the ability to mount two flags and alternative camouflage patterns on Soviet destroyers and cruisers.

The reward for completing the entire collection is the ability to mount two flags and alternative camouflage patterns on Soviet battleships.
    A subscription is available.

The “Resolute and Rapid” Collection
Update 0.8.10 welcomes a new collection to the game that’s dedicated to the Italian Navy. The words “Resolute and Rapid” refer to the motto of light cruiser Raimondo Montecuccoli—“Con risolutezza, con rapidità.” High speed was the hallmark of ships of the Regia Marina, while the Italian sailors' determination and devotion to duty was recognized even by their enemies. The collection consists of four sections, with four elements in each:
  • Ships
  • Tour of Duty
  • Service Medals I
  • Service Medals II

The reward for completing the sections is 1 day of Warships Premium Account.

The rewards for completing the entire collection are an achievement and the unique Italian Commander, Luigi Sansonetti, who possesses the following talents:
  • Scorched by Fury—activates when you score the Confederate achievement and reduces the reload time of the main battery guns by 15%.
  • Triumphant Haul—activates after you destroy an enemy ship and extends the main battery firing range by 8%. Can be activated once per battle.
  • Desperate Resistance—activates after you score 100 main battery shell hit ribbons and prolongs the action time for all consumables by 10%. Can be activated once per battle.

In addition, the Italian Commander boasts two enhanced skills:
  • Expert Loader, which accelerates shell type switching by 75% instead of 50%.
  • Torpedo Acceleration, which increases torpedo cruising speed by 7 knots instead of 5. At the same time, the reduction of their range remains the same—20%.
Like the other unique historical Commanders, Luigi Sansonetti has some special customizations: a broad pennant, colored shell tracers, and a signal flare that’s fired over the ship when a Commander's talent is activated.

Containers with the collection items can be obtained during Update 0.8.10:
  • From Daily Shipments
  • As a reward for completing Directives of the "Italian Cruisers: Part 2" event
  • In the Armory for Mediterranean Tokens—a new temporary resource
Mediterranean Tokens will be awarded for completing missions of the Directives and Daily Missions.

Elements of the collection can be obtained from the relevant event containers only. In Update 0.9.4, we're planning to make the Resolute and Rapid containers available in exchange for Coal in the Armory. This will allow you to complete the collection later in case you miss anything during Update 0.8.10 and want to have Commander Luigi Sansonetti in your Port. The cost of the containers will be announced later.
The exchange rate of duplicates for other elements is 4 : 1. After you complete the collection, all duplicates will be automatically exchanged for 15,000 credits.

World of Warships - Ryuu
From your port to the silver screen -- Midway arrives on November 8. Get your tickets and learn the history behind the film!
By the summer of 1942, Japan had strongly consolidated its positions in the Pacific, and the Imperial Japanese Navy had been striving to accomplish two parallel missions: to push the protective barrier farther from their borders, and to obliterate the enemy's fleet in a decisive battle.

The Japanese command saw a chance to fulfill both these missions at once when their attention was caught by a small Midway Atoll. There was a hard-surface aerodrome on the atoll; if the Japanese captured it, they could establish a fine intermediate base on the Americans' doorstep, thus opening up a way to Pearl Harbor.

By the end of May, Admiral Yamamoto had thought over his plan several times, and ordered the start of an operation. Task forces were dispatched to sea one after another. The Japanese hoped for a sudden strike and superiority of forces. However, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, Nimitz, had his own ace in the hole: his code breakers had decoded the Japanese code, and so could decipher a part of Japanese transmissions. Moreover, the Navy HQ were receiving a lot of reports on the movements of Yamamoto's forces, thus adding to the overall picture.

The 1st Air Fleet, headed by Admiral Nagumo, was the primary strike force in the upcoming operation. The squadron’s aircraft carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Hiryū and Sōryū—had already caused a lot of trouble for the allied forces. The Japanese forces stood up to the 16th and 17th task forces with three aircraft carriers, USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and USS Yorktown, commanded by Admirals Spruance and Fletcher.

The initial contact occurred on June 3, at 9:04 AM local time, when a patrol aircraft detected a Japanese transport squadron 500 miles southwest of Midway. Shortly after, another recon aircraft spotted the main Japanese forces 700 miles west of the island. At noon, 6 heavy B-17 bombers set off to intercept the main Japanese forces; around 4:40 PM the aircraft started to release bombs from high altitude, but scored no hits. At night, four Catalina bombers from the 44th Patrol Squadron used radar readings to strike at a Japanese transport squadron, and managed to damage tanker Akebono Maru with a torpedo.

At predawn dusk on June 4, the aircraft carriers commanded by Nagumo were buzzing with activity to prepare the first aircraft group, which was to destroy all US air forces on the island aerodrome as envisioned by the Japanese commanders. At 4:30 AM, the first aircraft got the green light to take off, and, in just 15 minutes, there were 108 machines in the air. After the first group had executed a combat formation and circled around the aircraft carriers, they set off in the direction of Midway.

At 5:45 AM, the following message was received from one of the flying boats: "A multitude of aircraft are heading towards Midway, bearing 320, range 150." Without a second thought, the Americans scrambled everything that could fly on Midway, thus protecting aircraft on the ground from danger. An attempt to repel the assault of the Japanese with 27 Marine Corps fighters failed—15 US fighters were shot down and 7 more were damaged. Nonetheless, when the Japanese group approached the aerodrome for a strike, they could barely damage the takeoff strip and destroyed only a part of the structures. The Japanese mission was almost in vain, and they lost 10 deck aircraft.

All that time, the Americans had been waiting for a main message regarding the detection of the Imperial Japanese Navy strike force. At 5:52 AM, the following message was received from one of the patrol aircraft: "Two aircraft carriers and main force ships detected, heading 135, speed 25." In a short while, deck-borne aircraft launched multiple strikes on Nagumo's aircraft carrier formation, but none of them turned out to be successful. In turn, the Americans lost 14 airplanes during the raid because they were attacking without fighter support. Around 7:28 AM, a Japanese recon airplane from cruiser Tone established the contact with the American task force. A duel of the aircraft carriers started.

The moment Nagumo discovered the location of the American forces, US aircraft had already been approaching his forces. At the same time, sailors on the Japanese aircraft carriers were preparing the second aircraft group willing to finish off the American air forces on the island aerodrome. Additional fighters took to the air to repel a probable attack. Nagumo had a tough choice to make after receiving the recon reports: either scramble the on-deck bombers prepared for striking Midway, and send them to attack the American forces, or let the first aircraft group land, since they had little fuel left, and then hit the enemy with everything the Japanese has. Nagumo decided not to take any chances and chose the latter, the more reliable option.

The first US torpedo bombers and fighters to take off lost contact with each other, making the start of the attack on the Japanese forces uncoordinated. Fifteen TBD-1 torpedo bombers from USS Hornet were the first to attack the Japanese aircraft carriers, and a little later, 14 torpedo bombers from USS Enterprise joined the offensive. Without a single support aircraft, they recklessly rushed into their final attack, and only four torpedo bombers survived. The next to come were 12 torpedo bombers from USS Yorktown accompanied by 10 F4F-4 fighters, but their strike turned out to be unsuccessful as well—only two aircraft managed to return to the aircraft carrier. Meanwhile, the Japanese were trying to prepare their task force to attack the American forces, while landing their returning aircraft at the same time. By the time the attacks of the American torpedo bombers had been repelled, 50 dive bombers from USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown came roaring down from the clouds on the Japanese aircraft carriers, totally unaware of their simultaneous strike. The Japanese fighters didn't manage to gain enough altitude to counter the attack, and could only helplessly observe the attack. In five minutes, Dauntless bombers scored hits on Kaga, Sōryū, and Akagi. All three aircraft carriers were doomed: filled fuel lines, fueled airplanes and the arsenal stockpiled on the decks did their job—devastating fires started that led to detonation of ammunition. By the next morning, all three ships were lying on the sea floor.

After the flagship Akagi had disengaged from action, Rear Admiral Yamaguchi, the commander of the 2nd Carrier Division, took command of the deck aviation. The only sound ship at his disposal was Hiryū, which had withdrawn from the group to the north to avoid the torpedo attacks. At 10:40 AM, Yamaguchi started to scramble a strike force comprising 18 D3A dive bombers and 6 A6M fighters. Despite the obvious preponderance of forces against the Japanese, he had no other choice. An hour later, a fierce dog fight broke out at the approach to USS Yorktown. Without fear of losses, the Japanese dive bombers scored three hits on the ship. For a while, the aircraft carrier was unable to move, but, by 1:50 PM, repair parties had quickly managed to isolate the fires. The ship started moving at a speed of 19 knots, and continued to accept and launch aircraft. After Yamaguchi had received inconclusive reports from the eight airplanes that returned from the mission, he sent in a second group comprising 10 B5N torpedo bombers and 6 A6M fighters. At 2:26 PM, the air group commanded by Navy Lieutenant Tomonaga engaged enemy support fighters in combat and started to attack USS Yorktown from different directions, resulting in two torpedo hits. The ship's machines stopped, its list started to increase, and by 3:00 PM, the crew had withdrawn from the aircraft carrier to escort ships. Despite the damage received, USS Yorktown remained afloat, and the repair parties returned the next day and tried to save the ship. But fate interfered there one more time: Japanese submarine I-168 attacked the immobilized the aircraft carrier on June 6. USS Yorktown received additional damage and remained afloat for almost 24 hours, before sinking the next morning.

At the same time, recon aircraft from USS Yorktown detected Hiryū, accompanied by a dozen ships including battleships Haruna and Kirishima, 72 miles northwest. Yamaguchi planned to attack the remaining US aircraft carriers at dusk, so the crew had a short break to eat and prepare the aircraft. At 5:03 PM, a shout of a Hiryū's flagman broke the silence: "Enemy dive bombers are right above us!" While the Japanese were preparing for another attack, USS Enterprise and USS Hornet sent in their dive bombers, which had managed to refuel and rearm by that time. The air group from USS Enterprise dropped four bombs onto the fore end of the Japanese aircraft carrier; very powerful explosions followed causing a third of the flight deck to collapse inside the hangars, setting the ship ablaze.

By night, all attempts to extinguish the doomed ship failed. Around 2:50 AM, the remaining members of the crew gathered on the flight deck, where Kaku, the commander of the ship, and then Yamaguchi delivered their farewell speech. Both officers decided to go down with the ship. Escort destroyers approached the aircraft carrier and took the rest of the crew on-board. They then executed the final order of the Admiral—to launch a torpedo salvo at Hiryū at 5:10 AM. Explosions sounded, and the ship began to sink. The carrier remained afloat until 8:20 AM, when she finally sank.

That was a catastrophic defeat for Japan in the Battle of Midway. Japan lost their main strike force—their aircraft carriers—and they had nothing to replace them with. At that time, the Americans were constructing 3 squadron and 9 light aircraft carriers in their shipyards, while the Japanese were constructing just 1 squadron, 1 light, and 1 aircraft carrier, rebuilt from a passenger liner. The Japanese "tsunami" was stopped, the war of attrition started, and the Empire had no chance to win that particular war due to the overwhelming supremacy of the USA, both in terms of resources and industrial power.

World of Warships - Ryuu

World of Warships is the largest virtual shipyard in the world.

The quality of the work done by our artists improves each year, and the requirements for the accuracy of the models they create grow respectively. Unfortunately, the in-game camera doesn't allow you to see all their details and beauty. In the Dry Dock show, you'll be able to see the refined beauty of our in-game models and duly appreciate the immaculate details of the various objects on their decks.

Today, we're focusing on a special Premium Tier X ship from the branch of British battleships—Thunderer. The project of the Royal Navy battleship with reinforced firepower was designed taking into account the experience British shipbuilders gained during World War II. The ship is armed with 457 mm main battery guns that were developed in the early 1920s and were the most powerful British naval artillery systems.

Take a look at the British battleship from an unusual angle in the latest episode of Dry Dock!

World of Warships - WoWs Admiral

Destroyer Z-39 was one of the last ships of her type to be built for the Kriegsmarine.

She served in the navies of three countries: Germany, the U.S.A., and France. Now you have the chance to take command of her in World of Warships!

History
In early 1939, Germany adopted the so-called "Plan Z" that provided for building a large surface fleet. Under this plan, 68 destroyers were to be constructed, eight of which were ordered to be built as per the 1936A design. These were large ships with a full water displacement of almost 3,700 tons, and their main feature was artillery armament with a caliber of 150 mm—usually typical of cruisers. There were no other countries in the world where shipbuilders mounted guns of such a large caliber on destroyers.

By the time World War II broke out, the execution of Plan Z had only just commenced. It was in September 1939 that Krupp's Germaniawerft shipyards in Kiel received the order for four destroyers, including Z-39. The new ships had to be built within the limitations of wartime budgets and utilize simplified technology, which is why the project was codenamed 1936A (Mob) meaning "mobilization."

Construction progressed slowly. The shipbuilders experienced shortages of materials, the shipyards were busy repairing ships damaged in battle, and their qualified personnel were sent to naval bases in France and Norway. This resulted in Z-39’s construction schedule being set back by almost a year. The destroyer was launched in December 1941, but she was commissioned only in August 1943.

By that time it had become apparent that project 1936A needed to be significantly elaborated. Her five 150 mm main guns turned out to be too heavy and adversely affected the ship's seagoing performance. Apart from that, her AA armament was too weak. Prior to the beginning of 1944, the ship hadn’t even put out to sea, and yet she underwent the necessary overhaul to fix these issues. In the process, she was stripped of her No.3 main battery gun, which allowed her AA armament to be further reinforced.

In 1944, the ship took part in minelaying operations in the Baltic Sea while attached to the 4th destroyer flotilla, and shelled Soviet positions from time to time. In June 1944, off the coast of Paldiski, the ship was damaged during a Soviet air raid. After being transported to Kiel for repairs, the ship again suffered damage during an attack by British bombers. Due to a lack of the necessary personnel and materials for repairs, as well as a critical shortage of fuel, the ship was only able to return to active service in late March, 1945.

During the final months of the war, Z-39 continued to provide fire support for the retreating German forces, and escorted transport ships carrying garrisons and refugees being evacuated from the Baltic coast. On May 10, 1945, the destroyer was decommissioned from the navy in Kiel.

After that, the ship became a prize of war for the Allies. She was transferred to Plymouth in the U.K., and then later in August 1945, to Boston in the U.S.A. The former German destroyer was inducted into the U.S. Navy under the name “DD-939.” The Americans studied their trophy for two years, and were particularly interested in her propulsion. However, the U.S. Navy wasn’t in heavy need of another destroyer, especially one that couldn’t boast of being a particularly successful design. That’s why, in early 1948, the ship returned to Europe and was inducted into the French Navy.

Under the French flag, the ex-Z-39 was renamed “Q-128,” and she served almost until the mid-1960s. But the French decided not to commission her as a warship. The ship was initially used as a donor of spare parts for the nation’s other prize destroyers, and later she served as a pontoon boat. In 1964, the decommissioned ship was finally scrapped for metal in Lorient, France.

Modeling the Ship
In the game the ship will be featured as she was in 1945.

Z-39 in Combat
VII Z-39 is a destroyer equipped with cruiser-like 150 mm artillery guns that successfully employ both types of shells. That, coupled with her fast torpedoes, makes Z-39 a formidable ship—lethal within a 10 km range, especially for other destroyers and battleships. Her large amount of HP, decent speed, and camouflage, as well as the handy Hydroacoustic Search consumable, make her a true force to be reckoned with. Z-39 is built to duel and hunt, but she's also a valuable team player.

Key Features
  • Her pool of 19,600 HP is impressive, even for higher-tier destroyers.
  • Four 150 mm guns. Their impressively fast shells with flat-trajectory ballistics deliver significant damage and have high penetration capabilities. Her HE shells also have good chances of causing fires on any targets they strike.
  • She’s equipped with some of the tier’s fastest mid-range torpedoes. Range—8.5 km; speed—65 knots.
  • The Hydroacoustic Search consumable increases her detection capabilities, rendering Z-39 effective against other destroyers.
  • Access to Upgrade Slot 5, which is unusual for Tier VII ships.
  • She earns more credits, and her permanent camouflage provides a 50% XP bonus per battle and reduces the cost of your ship's post-battle service by 10%.
