John is missing. He flew out to GDC last week stowed inside Brendan’s suitcase to save money, I’m sure you’ll remember, but on the return journey Brendan’s bag has gone missing. Vanished. Didn’t flop onto the luggage carousel. The airport have no idea. John took a few cans of pop and bags of gross American chocolate in with him so I’m sure he’ll be fine, but where is he? Amsterdam? Boise? Hong Kong? Honolulu? I’m sure he’ll turn up. For now, here I am, I am taking over the Steam Charts for another week.

If there’s one lesson to learn from last week’s 10 top-selling games on Steam, it’s that fancy open-world games are quite popular.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Co-op hack-and-slasher Warhammer: Vermintide 2's excellent combat and clever level design are translating into commercial success: the game has generated more revenue in the two weeks since it released than the original Vermintide has made in its lifetime, according to the chief executive of developer Fatshark, Martin Wahlund.

"Right now, we have outsold, in terms of revenue, the lifetime revenue of the original Vermintide, and on PC only," he told PCGamesInsider.biz (the game is yet to come out on consoles). Wahlund attributed the success to the support of the original's fan base alongside the fact that the sequel is simply a better game.

"If you do a follow-up to a game that was quite successful, which the first one was, you have the old audience, who come back and vouch for it, which gives you a headstart. So word of mouth spreads," he said. "It's also a much better game. We learnt a lot about giving people something to strive for. We have a different system by which players can get stuff. The core of the game is just better."

Whether or not it's a better game than the original is a matter for debate. It's by no means perfect, with bad matchmaking and some questionable design decisions around player progression. But, as Steven wrote in his review, the thrill of its combat more than makes up for those missteps. It will get even better later this month when Steam Workshop support arrives.

It's $30/£23 on Steam and the Humble Store, but you can pick it up for around 20% less in the Fanatical Spring Sale. Remember to enter code 'Spring10' for a further 10% off at checkout.

If you're interested in the first game, then that's cheap on Fanatical, too. Ian's review is this-a-way.

We noticed an increase in certain crashes with 1.0.4.1 - specifically at the end of the Prologue. This version will fix that. We also found a crash which could occur when applying video settings (the settings were applied but the crash was clearly not intended). 1.0.4.2 fixes that as well. There are no additional changes.

Have a lovely weekend!

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

We're spoiled for choice when it comes to Warhammer experts on the PC Gamer staff. As one of definitely the top three local Warhammer nerds it's my job to help you find your way deeper into the Old World if Vermintide has given you an appetite for its particular variety of dark fantasy.

One of the thing's that's great about Vermintide 2 is that you don't need to know what a poisoned wind globadier or a Clan Moulder packmaster is to play it—someone will just shout "Hookrat!" and you know to look out for one of those rat jerks who tries to grab you with a pole. But there's plenty of references to the wider world of Warhammer in there to make it feel like you really are part of a strange fantasy land—so much so that when I look out the fortress window at the Empire I wish I could climb down there and wander off into it.

Until somebody finally bites the bullet and makes the singleplayer open-world Warhammer RPG of my dreams, reading the books is the next best thing. But which of the vast variety of them should you check out?

Felix Jaeger (poet, scholar) and Gotrek Gurnisson (suicidal, alcoholic)

If you like Bardin, especially when he's a Slayer

Bardin Gorekkson is a Warhammer dwarf through and through, in that he knows how to hold a grudge, enjoys a drunken singalong, sounds like he's from Yorkshire, and responds to shame by shaving his head and joining a death cult.

The Slayers are dwarfs who've done something so dishonorable the only way to atone is to find a noble death in battle, and the iconic dwarf Slayer is Gotrek Gurnisson, star of a series of short stories and later novels. The worst Slayer in history, he's seeking an epic end, but too hard to die and too stubborn to quit. Co-star of the Gotrek stories is a "manling" poet named Felix whose job it is to record Gotrek's doom. Classic odd couple.

Part of what makes Warhammer interesting is the way it takes relatively low-key or gritty fantasy characters and locations and jams them together with epic high fantasy from the other end of the spectrum. The story of a poet forced to accompany the world's most unkillable dwarf as he throws himself against bigger and bigger foes is a perfect example.

Gotrek and Felix work best in picaresque short stories in collections like Trollslayer, by the duo's original creator Bill King, and Gotrek and Felix: The Anthology, which is by various authors and taken from different parts of their timeline. Gotrek and Felix don't work quite as well in novel-length tales but if you want to try one of those Skavenslayer follows directly from Trollslayer and is the most Vermintide of the bunch.

Art from Warhammer: Crown of Destruction (Boom! Studios)

If you like the Skaven, because who doesn't like cannibal rats?

The best place to start with Skaven is The Loathsome Ratmen and All Their Vile Kin by Mitchel Scanlon. Written in-character as a scholarly text by an Imperial academic, it explains things like Skaven physiology and the differences between their various clans with plenty of fusty digressions and flavorsome art. Good luck finding it at a decent price though, maybe check the library for that one.

If it's novels you want the author to look for is C L Werner, who has written more books about Skaven than is healthy. A standalone one to start with is Vermintide, which the games borrow their name from although they're not actually connected beyond both being about hordes of Skaven doing very bad things. Written under his pseudonym Bruno Lee, it's another example of the way Warhammer contrasts grounded fantasy with the over-the-top variety—it begins with court politics and an investigation into a museum theft and climaxes with a gyrocopter battle in the sky.

The best of the Warhammer comics is Crown of Destruction, which also deals with Skaven. It's written by former PC Gamer editor Kieron Gillen and has art by Dwayne Harris, who draws everyone so they look appropriately like miniatures on a tabletop in the mid-shots, though I'm not so sure about the effect in close-ups. Over the course of four issues it escalates nicely, turning into a three-way conflict between Skaven, an Imperial army, and the undead. It's also quite funny, off-setting the grimness with black comedy like the best Warhammer fiction does.

Detail from The Witch Hunter's Handbook (The Black Library)

If you like Saltzpyre and his rants about heretics

The Witch Hunter's Handbook is another book written in-character like The Loathsome Ratmen and All Their Vile Kin, and likewise it's now out-of-print and overpriced, but still worth checking libraries for. Written by Darius Hinks, it's a Warhammer version of medieval witchcraft treatise the Malleus Maleficarum. The Witch Hunter's Handbook covers the finer details of what it's like being a Templar of the Order of Sigmar including sections on swordplay, how to tell the many varieties of witch apart, and how to put the question to them with tools like the Whirligig, the Scold's Bridle, and the Heretic's Fork. With the Sigmar's Blessing free DLC you can get a trinket version of the Witch Hunter's Handbook in the first Vermintide, and carry it into battle on your belt.

On the fiction side C L Werner is our guy again, with a whole trilogy about a witch hunter named Matthias Thulmann. Like Saltzpyre he's basically Vincent Price when he's angry, and he foils the plots of cultists and sorcerers with help from a filthy mercenary sidekick called Streng.

Genevieve Dieudonn (immortal vampire) and Constant Drachenfels (immortal bastard)

If you just want to read a real good book

The best of the Warhammer books unfortunately doesn't feature any hordes of Skaven, but that doesn't mean it's not relevant to Vermintide. Drachenfels by Kim Newman (writing under the pseudonym Jack Yeovil) provided the setting for the first game's DLC of the same name, and in Vermintide 2 Lohner references its protagonist when discussing the vampire who stayed at his inn but whose name he can't remember. That's Genevieve, from a series that are the best of the Warhammer books.

Drachenfels is a story about putting on a play, though the play's being performed in a haunted castle and one of the cast is undead. It's like Singin' in the Rain reimagined as gothic fantasy. A later book in the series, Beasts in Velvet, has new protagonists who are on the hunt for a serial killer in the city of Altdorf. It's the closest thing to Terry Pratchett's City Watch books you'll get outside the Discworld. Hardly anyone just goes on a quest in Warhammer (except in Warhammer Quest), and the Genevieve stories instead borrow their plot structures from other genres, then give them a veneer of dark fantasy as though Warhammer's an Instagram filter that adds grime, cults, rats, and weird British jokes to whatever you run through it.

There are plenty more good Warhammer books and short stories (anything by James Wallis is a good pick, as are the stories about a Sherlock Holmes analogue named Zavant) and certainly a few worth skipping as well, but that's more than enough to get you started. Shout out your own favorites in the comments.

Heroes!

This version addresses some of the issues that arose from our balance changes, that we introduced in version 1.0.4 earlier this week.

We realized that we've made a few mistakes in balancing the spawns on Legend. One of the issues that we wanted to target was the lack of variety in our spawned roamers. That is, we usually ended up with large groups of Elites (Stormvermin, Maulers, Berzerkers, Plague Monks and Chaos Warriors) with too little variety.

However, the changes we introduced in our previous patch, weighting the spawns to smaller groups of roamers and capping number of Elites, left the levels feeling a bit deserted. Our eagerness to polish and balance your experience resulted in a rushed patch with too little internal testing. We are sorry. We will strive to do better in the future.

The fixes in this version should solve this - Legend should now be a fair and balanced challenge and enemy population should be sufficiently numerous. We want to provide a solid challenge that nicely scales as you progress through the difficulties with a high degree of mutability. For those that want to further tweak the resistance you are facing we hope that deeds, tomes and grims does the trick.

The hotfix also includes a fix where Champion difficulty used the same peak clamp as Legendary difficulty resulting in a tad high peaks when everything wants to spawn at the same time. This has been fine-tuned to remove the most extreme of peaks for our Champion players. Legendary has also received a suitably high clamp to keep things “fair”.

Fixes / Tweaks
  • Fixed a crash for Sienna Unchained, when converting damage to Overcharge while standing in any kind of damaging liquid, most commonly Bile Troll vomit.
  • Fixed a crash for when Kerillian’s Waystalker Career Skill had just been used, and she then jumped onto a ladder.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when switching cosmetics in the inventory.
  • Garglechomp Hobblegob remains unchanged since 1.0.4.
Known Issues

Certain graphics options will prompt you to restart the game to apply them. Doing so will crash. The next time you start the game, the settings are applied.

We are aware of this issue and will fix this in the next version.

Heroes

Welcome to Patch 1.0.4. This patch includes various fixes and tweaks, stability improvements and balance adjustments. The changelist is as follows:

Skittergate

One of our areas of focus have been the Skittergate level and the end fight. This patch solves many of the bugs we have been made aware of.
  • Players’ buffs and talents will not be removed when they move through the portal.
  • Fixed issues with the final boss’ HP bar showing negative values for clients.
  • Fixed issues with some of the animated props in the level, where their state would not be synchronized to joining clients.
  • The final boss will no longer get stuck in corners, or spawn outside the combat area.
  • Fixed a crash when the final boss would cast a spell on a player that left the game.
  • The final boss fight on Skittergate is divided into two stages. The duration of the fight should now be more equal between both parts.
  • The boss in the first stage of the final fight on Skittergate is now more resistant to burst attacks, but deal less damage with his guns. The boss in the second stage has had his health reduced by around a third.
  • Spawning of enemies during the final boss fight on Skittergate has been tweaked to reduce the frequency of certain enemy types, such as Berserkers and shielded units.
Burblespue Halescourge

Bubblespit Halleberry turned out a bit harder and more unforgiving compared to the other Lords, mainly because of unavoidable attacks and a high health pool.

We still want this fight to be challenging and different from the other lords, but we’re tuning the Burgersnot fight to make it more fair and balanced.
  • Max health reduced by 10% for all difficulties.
  • Plague Wave - the green illusions. The angle has been increased for the triple Plague Wave attack, allowing players more space when avoiding it.
  • Plague Wave can now be dodged more efficiently by lowering the impact radius when the player is dodging.
  • Lowered Number of Berserkers spawned on Legend difficulty from 5 to 3.
  • Lowered number of Marauders spawned on Champion and Legend when spawning with Berserkers and Chaos Warriors.
Balancing Spawns

We’re tweaking how we spawn roamers. There is now a smoother distribution of elites in general. We were a bit heavy on armored types on the higher difficulties.

We are also making tweaks to how we spawn specials, e.g. Gutter Runners, Warpfire Throwers, and Hook Rats. Each time you play a level, the Conflict Director divides the level into segments, which primarily spawn either Skaven or Chaos enemies, or a mix of both.

Recruit Difficulty
  • Removed double chance of disabler specials for Skaven segments.
Veteran Difficulty
  • Removed double chance of disabler specials for Skaven segments.
  • Increased time between specials spawn for Chaos segments, it was a bit lower than other segments.
Champion Difficulty
  • Removed the increased chance for spawning disabler specials.
  • Increased time between specials spawn slightly for Mixed and Skaven segments.
Legend Difficulty
  • Removed the increased chance for spawning disabler specials.
  • Increased time between specials spawn for Skaven segments.
  • Increased time between specials spawn for Chaos segments just a smidge, since they have a lower total special allowance anyways.
We also fixed an issue on Legend difficulty with the amount of horde waves using the default Recruit settings. We should now correctly spawn hordes across no fewer than three waves with timing tweaked specifically for the Legend experience. Enjoy.

Overall, the balance changes to Legend provide a more varied, fair, and fun experience on the higher difficulty setting, with three times the size of hordes for good coop fun.
The way we tweak Specials also improve the variations of enemies, but at the same time we’ve increased timings to make for less spammy playthroughs.

Stay tuned to a future dev-stream with all the details on the Conflict Director!

Fixes / Tweaks
  • Fixed an issue when the Bile Troll would get stuck in an animation loop while it was crouching, or when it was close to certain walls.
  • Tweaked some attacks of the Bile Troll to not trigger when the troll does not have line of sight to the player.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the Rat Ogre to rapidly perform his shove attack.
  • Fixed an issue when the Chaos Spawn would get stuck while grabbing a player while all other players are knocked out or dead.
  • The Leech Sorcerer should no longer damage his target before grabbing it, i.e. teleporting onto a player will no longer damage them.
  • Beam staff now determine crits for each overcharge tick (each 0.45 seconds) instead of for the duration of the attack. This change was made in order to ensure a predictable crit rate that could not be manipulated.
  • Fixed Fencing sword pistol shot to not do less damage when critting.
  • When attack speed buffs ended during melee attacks it caused the attack to not count. This was more obvious with slow sweeping weapons. Attacks will now retain any attack speed buffs they had when starting the action.
  • Fixed an issue when crossbows sometimes fires twice, when under effects that remove ammo cost - such as the Bounty Hunters crit talent.
  • Fixed Kruber’s Huntsman Career Skill to correctly reset the FOV after deactivating.
  • Fixed an issue where shotguns with “critical strike effectiveness” were incorrectly getting an increase to power level when critting on top of the extra boost damage.
  • Added over 2000 new missing localized subtitles for voice over, in all languages.
Balance
  • Some of the Bile Troll’s attacks would still damage a player even if the attack was blocked. This was a bit too punishing. We removed this effect on some of the troll’s faster attacks, like the shove.
  • Decreased the amount of troll projectile-vomit to 20 liters.
Stability / Performance
  • Fixed a rare crash on startup that happened when the game process had restricted thread affinity,
  • Fixed a rare crash on startup on laptops with dedicated GPU.
  • Fixed a crash when Loot Rats were damaged on the end event explosions of Athel Yenlui and Righteous Stand, or when getting hit by a Plague Claw projectile on Fort Brachsenbrücke.
  • Fixed an issue where it would take a long time for the Halescourge end fight to trigger.
  • Fixed a rare crash when hitting the body part of an enemy that had been pulped by another player.
  • Fixed rare crash when removing the smoke cloud from Bardin’s Ranger Veteran Career Skill.
  • Fixed a crash when warpfire flames hit the summoning sorcerers in the end event in Convocation of Decay.
  • Fixed a crash that could happen if a player leaves while an enemy tries to play attack dialogue.
  • Fixed a crash when dead players drop a long way and try to spawn their equipped pickup items (tomes, first aid kits, potions, etc.)
  • Fixed a crash for other players when starting a flamethrower attack (Drakegun or Flamestorm Staff) and switching to a melee weapon immediately afterwards.
  • Fixed a crash when voting for a mission while a player vote kick is active.
  • Fixed rare crash when switching ranged weapons as Kerillian Waystalker and having the Vaul's Quiver talent selected.
  • Fixed a rare crash in the sound system.
  • Outlines that intersect with screen edges no longer create an outline on the left and right sides.
  • FXAA is now applied to outlines.
  • The game now applies the “Sharpness Filter” render settings directly without requiring a restart.
