Eternal Card Game - Dire Wolf CS

My beasts are hungry. Wherever you Nomads roam, and whether you Bolster your ranks with new Recruits or you rely on the Renowned skill of your trained warriors, my beasts will Devour you all.

Welcome to the last preview article for Battle Lines! We’ve gone over four different mechanics for four different tri-faction sides in the fight against The Hermit. But where has The Hermit himself been all this time? What does he have to offer?

Wonder no more, as The Hermit’s beast army is represented by Primal, Fire, and Shadow, and is composed of, well, beasts (And The Hermit himself)! And their mechanic is Devour, which will only be found in these factions in Battle Lines.

Devour X: Effect means, “When played, you may destroy that many cards from the top of the enemy void to get the listed effect.”

Cards that have been Devoured are completely removed from the game forever. So playing Voltaic Viper will remove the opponent’s ability to interact with the top 2 cards of their void permanently while netting you a card in the process.

To get into the nitty gritty a little, the ability won’t happen if you don’t meet the Devour threshold, and Voidbound cards cannot be Devoured and will be skipped over. The enemy player can respond to Devour abilities. If they protect their void with Aegis or remove enough cards in response, it will prevent your Devour ability entirely.

Devour can also appear on attachments, like Stalker Spear. A 2/2 Versatile weapon is fine and all, but if you can wait until you can devour 4 cards, you get a permanent +2/+2 stat increase. Perfect on either your avatar to take out a medium sized threat, or on a unit to make a truly formidable beater!

Meanwhile Insatiable Gorger gives you a little bit more bang for your buck. Whether it or another card is the one doing the Devouring, this greedy little creature can undergo quite the growth spurt.

And that will do it for the preview articles for Battle Lines, coming out October 18th! If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out the pre-order news here, and come hang out with us in the official Discord!

What’s that? You want even more spoilers? Well, I suppose we can do one last one for the road…

Eternal Card Game - Dire Wolf CS

After the tragedy of Hivefall, the surviving Hivetenders have become Nomads, traveling Thera in caravans hoping to find a new place to rebuild. Meanwhile the citizens and soldiers of Steelwarren have been besieged by an army of beasts. Only by Bolstering their defenses will they have a chance to survive.

Welcome to the second of three preview articles for Battle Lines. Last time we looked at two of the major mechanics that Battle Lines has to offer. And today there are two more to look at!

Let’s start with Time, Fire, and Justice, the factions representing The Hive Caravan. The Caravan is formed by Hivetenders, Lanterns, and Mistrals, and they bring a new battle skill to the table: Nomad. You’ll only find Nomad in these factions in Battle Lines.

Nomad is a battle skill that is always followed by a number. Nomad X means "This unit has Flying on your turn and +X/+X on the enemy turn.”

So Hexamancer is a 2/2 Flyer on your turn, but a 4/4 ground unit on the opponent’s turn. Great for attacking or for blocking, but you have to choose which you’d prefer.

When you give Nomad to a unit that already has Nomad, you add the values together. Playing Pilgrim's Pack on a unit with Nomad 1, it’ll become a unit with Nomad 3. If you play another, it’ll jump up to Nomad 5! That’s a lot of extra stats to have on your blockers!

And adding Nomad to a unit with Flying will cause it to gain the stats on the opponent’s turn without it losing Flying. The same is true if giving Flying to a unit with Nomad.

Normally Nomad gives you the choice of having an evasive attacker, or an efficient defender. But with Queenguard Elite’s Endurance, you can do both! Soar over your opponent’s defenses on your turn, then turn away their onslaught on theirs!

Lastly, we have Steelwarren represented by Justice, Time, and Shadow. Steelwarren is composed of Fiera’s soldiers, Ziat’s enforcers, and the people’s rebellion headed by Dran. And their mechanic Bolster will be found exclusively within their factions in Battle Lines.

"Bolster: Effect" is a game term that means "Once per turn, when you gain Health or Armor, do the listed effect."

In Charming Steelguard’s case, this means playing a 1/2 Aegis unit the first time you gain Health or Armor. The next time you gain Health or Armor that turn, The Steelguard will fail to enlist anyone, but he’ll be ready again on the next person’s turn.

Like Recruit, Bolster can appear on all sorts of card types. Fang Trap may not reduce the enemy unit’s stats by much on its own… but trigger Bolster a few times and they’ll soon find themselves unable to stand.

Ziat’s very busy now trying to keep the people of Steelwarren safe. What better way to do that than by just killing anything that threatens them?

How will you handle The Hermit’s beast army? Will you Bolster yourself with plenty of Health and Armor to withstand the onslaught? Or will you embrace a Nomadic lifestyle, to have the tactical advantage over your enemies? Make your choice soon, as Battle Lines comes out on October 18th!

Eternal Card Game - Dire Wolf CS

Ever since the events of Hivefall, the former rogues’ den of Skullhaven has become a place of great Renown, bringing in refugees while its people fight against The Hermit’s beasts. Meanwhile the Youngbloods Recruit everyone they can, hoping to keep their grove and way of life safe.
Welcome to the first of three preview articles for Battle Lines, Eternal’s newest set! Battle Lines is a set heavily focused on the five alliances that have risen in Thera after the fall of The Hive. Each is represented by three different factions, and each with its own mechanic found exclusively within those factions.

Let’s start with Skullhaven. Skullhaven is composed primarily of Bonepickers, Rangers, and Slayers, all groups known across Thera for their daring and dangerous trades. As such, their mechanic is Renown, which will be found exclusively in Shadow, Justice, and Primal in Battle lines!

Renown is a returning mechanic we’ve not seen since all the way back in Defiance. For those who weren’t playing Eternal then, or just need a refresher, Renown means “The first time you play a spell or weapon on this unit, do the following.”

Basically, Renown gives you or your units a bonus whenever you play something on them. In the case of Daring Pathcutter, you’ll get an Aegis and draw a card. That’s some good value!

Canny Hunter adds a new twist to Renown. By Ambushing it in and then playing a fast spell like Finest Hour on it, you can completely turn an opponent’s attack upside down! And this is just the start of the tricky things you can do with Renown.

Some Renown cards care about the cost of the spell or weapon played on them. Eris in particular is very interested in your most expensive spells or weapons, so how deep are your pockets?

Next up is the Grove Alliance, represented by Fire, Time, and Primal. It’s composed of the Youngblood Exiles, the Druids, and you might see an occasional appearance from the Skycrag Six! They’re looking to protect The Grove from the Hermit’s beast army, and are looking to Recruit anyone they can to do it.

Recruit is a game action that means “Draw a unit from the top five cards of your deck. If it costs less than this card, play it. Bottom the rest.”

If you play Calm Instructor and in the top 5 cards of your deck there’s a Twilight Lantern, and a Gnarled Ant, you could choose to draw either. If you choose the Lantern, you’ll then immediately play it from your hand as it costs less than Calm Instructor. Which is more important to your gameplan?

You may also find a handful of cards within the Grove Alliance that have Inspire, which synergizes perfectly with Recruit. You always draw the unit you Recruit, even if you then immediately play it, so it will always benefit from the Inspire buff! Patrice’s ability to do both will no doubt serve the Grove well.

So who will you choose to bring at your side in battle? The renowned fighters of Skullhaven? Or the fresh new recruits from the Grove? Make your choice when Battle Lines comes out October 18th!

Units aren’t the only thing that can Recruit; spells and attachments can as well! Grove Defenses can stun enemies to pave the way for your attackers, while also Recruiting a new unit to your cause. Make use of the opening and push through!
