Hello and welcome to another update where we show you the amazing things we are working on for you guys!
Double Magazines
"There is nothing that some duct tape didn't fix or make better." That's how the old saying goes, and who are we to say anything different?
Guns that will be able to have double mags are:
AK 47
AKM
AKS
M16
MK18
MP5
AS VAL
Besides faster reload, once we add different bullet types, you will be able to load each mag with different ammo.
Also, you are getting that big bad M82 next patch.
Exploding Heads
"Is this really good enough to put into the update?"
Without this, this update wouldn't exist.
With the M82 getting live soon, we had to make this for an extra reward for all the headshots you will make.
Ship Wrecks
Casual diver, treasure hunter or just need a good place to dump a body. All of them are cool, and thats why we are making some interesting and amazing diving spots like this!
Regarding diving, you will be able to find/craft various items that will help you in diving. We will go into more details in some future update.
Quad bike animations
With the last update on quads, we improved and polished old animations for a better driving experience.
Base build accessories
You all saw in this post some snippets of base building, here are some tools that you will use.
You will need the tools for collecting various resources that are needed for base building. What did pirates do with shovels? Buried their chests!
Also a place for the guests to stay.
Community Q&A
I just want to say, that this is becoming my favourite part really fast.
We won't let your dreams be dreams. We are working on them as we speak.
Fingers crossed it's a carpenter related problem. But try to verify your steam files, it helps most of the time.
Let's make you a deal. We will just add a megaphone? For extra effect, you can use a real megaphone.
There will. We plan to add more animations, faces, tatoos down the line.
We will lower the spawn rate of them in the next patch pinky promise. You will be able to find all sorts of stuff in the market. But we will make sure to add a Christmas isle!
Current default loot settings are best optimised for fluent gameplay. Any increase puts more strain on servers and issues appear. But we are already working on ways to optimize that aspect.
“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”
Hey guys, here we are with a hotfix for some issues that the last patch added.
Bug fixes
Fixed the bug where you couldn't patch wounds after being burned by fire.
Fixed the bug where cutting down a tree would cause other trees of the same type to disappear.
Fixed the bug where cutting down a tree would leave tree collision on the server and cause floating logs above ground
Fixed the bug where trees and bushes would appear to be duplicated.
Fixed the bug where you couldn't get off the quad bike if the driver side was blocked.
Fixed fire damage being framerate dependant. Before fire would do different damage values depending on the server performance. Now it's always the same.
Fixed the bug where you would lose famepoints during events
Fix for item/event duplication bug
Fixed quad scale
QoL additions
Finished adding aging/degradation/wear to all clothing items.
Lowered heat effects of candle and torch items
Searching a puppet now drops items near the prisoner that did the searching instead the puppets position on the server.
Items transfer heat slower if they are contained within clothing items (clothes, backpacks ...)
Items no longer reach cooking temperatures while in clothes or hands.
Cooking meat on skewers working now as expected
Killing a prisoner via a headshot by a high powered rifle will result in his head exploding. (If we don't get videos from this in the first week we are removing it...it's a joke, but really get us some headplosion videos)
Added 10 new tracks to the radio station
Changed number of required days to unlock the survival achievements. Now its: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 days.
Reduced chance for rain. (We got too many rainy days here at the office so at least we can get you some rays of sunshine!)
Lowest shadow settings removed from options
Resolved the issue where meat would continue sizzling after being eaten
Resized the quad a bit so it doesn't look like a toy quad anymore
Optimizations
Wetness system has been updated, wetness calculation is now much faster.
Penis optimization. The D had a mind of its own, but we've managed to tame the beast. Don't ask what this means, just trust that we know what's best for you.
Optimized weather controller on client side. (We are giving your CPU a little breather). It should result in better client performance = more FPS.
Different dedicated server optimisations. It should result in better server performance = less lag.
Check taste
We added a new option in cooking so you can check in what state is the chicken that you're roasting over the fire.
Okay, I have to admit that I was blown away by all the awesome screenshots you guys provided. So, I'm doing a new showcase with 5 screenshots. (This is just a small showcase, we will come back later with a bigger one that has more pictures and videos)
Bro, you're such a good bro that this sunset would be less bro without you...broOriginal
This is the day when bro knew he fucked upOriginal
Hello everyone! Here we have our new development update and some Q&A at the end.
Bicycle
We got a lot of requests to add bicycles into the game, so we started to do that, also we expect videos of downhill racing at some point, make it happen!
M82
The work on the M82 is coming along nicely, animations are almost done. As its the first rifle of that size in the game we have some more work to do regarding physics and weapon handling.
Supermarket
Another building that you will be able to check out in our first city. It has sentimental value for bringing our whole country to the brink of economic destruction.
Optimization
So ignoring the FPS issues that showed up in the last patch (we're already on a good track to resolve the problem), once our new inventory system is live, we will see a performance boost, as we will have a new way to handle items. By that we mean all items: food cans, clothing, cars, weapons etc.
Sound
Improving reverbation audio system.
Recording and implementing voiceovers for tutorials.
Sound design for badass .50cal sniper.
Investigating how to implement advanced sound propagation.
So, now to the Q&A. We took 10 questions from our last post and answered them here!
All vehicles will count to the limit of 32 vehicles on the island.
Steam tends to mess up downloads, verifying game files helps most time.
Fair enough, we will fire him, our creative director, and the whole QA team.
We can count at least 100 small things that we can add to the game to make it interesting, and we will. However, if you miss to fill the holes in the foundation at one point the whole building will come down crashing. Also, feel free to send us those 50 suggestions!
Fun fact, the katana is in the game from day 1.
The FPS issue is being investigated and as soon as we find the cause we will do our best to fix it, and push a hotfix. The massive FPS drops that have been happening since the patch were not present before, so we are sure we will find the solution to it.
The item stacking will come when the whole inventory rework will be live.
No.
Underwater exploring will be added, with diving equipment more aquatic life and underwater caves to explore!
I mean, we are cool with it if you are?
That's all for today folks! If you have a question you want covered in the next post, leave it down below!
Hey, everyone, nice to see you all again! Hope you had a fun week and you're ready for a fun weekend! Let's get into the noootes.
Observatory
As you saw in our previous development post we have a cool new location!
A primal Event
Guess what! We added a lot of new bows and our arsenal of improvised weapons got bigger, so it was only right for us to make an event specifically for that! Let the best hunter win!
One more thing: Regarding all events we've increased the amount of fame points gained throughout the whole event, so wins in events will be a bit more impactful.
Quad Bike!
FINALLY! A NEW VEHICLE! Here's what you need to know about the quad:
It seats up to 2 people.
It's slower than the SUV.
It's adjusted for off-road driving.
Has less storage space than the SUV
Cooking Rework
In this patch you may notice the first of many changes to come in regards to the new cooking system. In previous patches we've introduced the ability to fuel crafted campfires, and now you'll be able to estimate how strong the fire is and how long it will keep burning just by looking at it. This is also reflected by the fire's temperature. This is important because now the food items have a proper cooking temperature they should be cooked at. Items now start to cook when their temperature reaches a certain value (dependant on the item), but if that temperature is too high, it will result in it being overcooked. If the item is emitting black smoke it should be taken away from the heat. Also keep in mind that the food will continue to cook for some time after being removed from heat, because of the heat it already absorbed.
Pro tip: for best cooking temperature, wait for the fire to subside, and cook on the embers. Also fire does damage now, so don't stand in it.
Currently we are experimenting with visual feedback on how to know when the cooking is done, and things will change as we tune the cooking mechanics!
Item Degradation
We are adding visual degradation so you can keep track of your items, this feature will be mostly used in cooking, and you'll see the effect on some items beyond cooking. As we improve it more items will be affected by it.
New Achievements.
We added 7 new achievements that are connected to surviving days on the island.
Bug fixes
Fixed Sanitarium surroundings.
Fixed wind direction and speed in multiplayer
We noticed that it acted broken in certain situations. Now pay more attention to it when you make long range shoots as it will be a bit harder.
Fixed bug when taking compound bow in hands while standing on it would make you fly. (This was awesome and I'm sad its gone)
Fixed crash when items get dragged.
#SetTime command didn't work in SP now it works.
QoL Additions
The golden drone now has speed that matches player movements (inside and outside vehicles). That makes following the player easier.
Claimed doors without locks can be reclaimed now.
Prohibited lockpicking while having negative fame points
Comic time! Everyone say thank you to Ivona for her awesome work, and if you missed them, here are the previous issues.
Hey everyone, we heard you missed our development updates, so we brought you one straight from Gamepires' kitchen. Read up on what we're cooking down below!
Base Building
Base building is coming along nicely, we added more objects than before, and each will have their own use. Also this time you will get 2 previews on how the placing and interaction with some segments will work.
We showed you some of the animations that we will use on boats, but we will have simple water transportation methods as well.
Quad Bike
Regarding transport, we are adding a quad bike. The quad will be able to seat 2 people,it has a storage box, and will come in different versions.
Driving skill
Our driving skill is being updated as we speak, advanced damage calculation depending on which part of the car you hit and what happens after.
If you would hit the car engine it will do more damage than if you would hit the side of the car.
Shooting tires can result that the car will stop driving.
City buildings
We are still not sure when the first city will come to the island, but we are making good progress on the assets.
Observatory
New place to explore! Want to gaze some stars?
Surprise!
This one doesn't need an introduction.
Missions
Okay we know a lot of people have been waiting for this. That's the reason we are taking our time to deliver it in the best condition possible. This is how it looks for now.
For missions we are adding a new tab called "Journal" that's the place where you will track all your quests.
For now there will be 3 mission types: Main story, Side story and Tutorial. There will be few ways of getting/triggering a mission:
Getting to a certain location
Over the Journal
Meeting certain conditions (crafting, skill level etc..)
Team missions (Team leader distributes roles and assignments for missions)
In some mission more people will be able to partake, but only the one who finishes first will get the reward. The same works with teams.
Inventory Rework
To those unaware, inventory rework is well underway. What that brings is a more flexible and performant system which will allow us to more easily implement specific inventory and item-related features. Features you can expect in the first wave include support for stacking various items, rotating items in your inventory, as well as improved chests / car inventory handling with accompanying UI. What it will also enable us to do includes, for example, lowering your pants when doing #2, attaching various items to your backpack and such QoL things.
Cooking
Basic level of cooking should be soon over, to get the grip of how it works we need to cover a few things first.
We reworked how fire works, as the fire consumes the wood its temperature will drop over time (now it will have an visual effect for easier fire tracking).
Similar system is the drying system. The closer you are to the fire the bigger the heat and the faster the food cooks. So things that will impact the final cooking product are:
Fire strength
Food distance from fire
Type of food (Some dishes are faster done some slower)
How fast the food item absorbs heat
Also, try not to burn the bacon as its possible to burn food if the fire is too strong and the food is too close to it.
Language support
We updated German, Russian and Simplified Chinese.
Before you rip our heads off and throw them to the god of SCUM Tena due to no patch today, I'd like to point out that you'll still get a new comic page and some of our favourite community creations!
Please do continue to share your artwork, funny moments, memes and any other material we could feature! You can also leave links to your social media profile if you are an artist/content creator so we can hopefully promote you a bit as well!
Let's get into the showcase!!
This is just a prop, we are definitely not testing this on people..
It's your girl T with a very special edition of our Wednesday Developer Showcase featuring our one and only Technical Director - Andrej AKA LevaOpaki!
"So what are you working on right now?" "You know we can't write about most of it." "Well then what am I supposed to write about?" *a bunch of code monkey gibberish*
Many of you already know Andrej - even though he's a Very Important C-Level Person, you won't have any trouble finding him on any of our social media channels or even on a random streamer's channel just hanging out and chatting people up. He loves chatting, both online and irl, and hardly ever stops, but hey, it's a huge part of his charm!
Andrej has been in the games industry for a Very Long Time™ and a programmer for even longer - he started out as an enthusiast with his friends before meeting Pong, our Creative Director, becoming friends with him and co-founding the company you know as Gamepires. His first big project was developing an in-house engine called PranaEngine - from scratch! - used in Gamepires' first game, the award-winning Gas Guzzlers Extreme, a racing combat game. Fun fact: Gas Guzzlers was made by a team of 7 people including just 3 programmers.
Gamepires' core team playing dress-up
The first thing you'll notice about Andrej when you talk to him is that he is a programmer. There will be zero doubt about that. His code is what he knows, loves, eats, breathes, and constantly talks about - anything else is less important. Of course he has other interests, too - he's been a taekwondo instructor at his own club for 20ish years and he LOVES going to raves, but programming is his one true love.
Schmitzy is a taekwondo master, too.
At the moment he's working on some supersecret stuff that we can't talk about yet. The reason I'm even mentioning it is because he's worried that people will think he's not working on anything fun if I don't, so he'd like you all to know that he IS in fact working on fun stuff, he just can't say anything because it's a surprise. I would, however, like you all to know that his definition of fun and most people's definition of fun are very different things, so take that with a grain of salt.
Of the things I am allowed to write about, Andrej spent the most time talking about the weather. You may already know that the weather in SCUM is Andrej's thing in case you saw any of the streams he was on. Right now he's working on implementing seasons into the game. After he's done, hopefully we'll have some or all of these things: different seasons in different climates in different map regions, procedurally generated snow (or rain or fallen leaves) build-up on game assets such as cars and roofs, precipitation dependent on the altitude, and subtler temperature fluctuations. He also said he wants to implement hair and beard growth in a more realistic way, and he has several other interesting graphics features he wants to explore in the future. One of the things he's especially looking forward to is implementing the taekwondo skill, but it won't be done any time soon. Andrej's got his hands full and there's only one of him.
Hey, kids, wanna buy some drugs?
I hope you enjoyed meeting our Andrej or learning more about him in case you've already run into him somewhere online. Stay tuned for more updates this week from your fave dev team!

That's it for today's patch notes, but that's not all, kids! Here's a brand new page of our Friday SCUM comic! If you missed the previous ones, here they are: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
You’ve probably realized we didn’t have any posts on Steam last week - that’s because the whole team went to Reboot Develop in Dubrovnik, Croatia, so this week we’ll have a special edition of our Developer Update where you’ll get to see what we did there!
Reboot Develop is a conference for games industry professionals ran by a small team of local industry veterans. Several of us in the office have previously worked at Reboot as games journalists in Reboot magazine or as organizers of the conference, and the fact that the local industry is so small and we’re all friends means we wouldn’t miss it for the world. This year’s edition was its 6th and the conference was rebranded into Reboot Develop Blue - the reason for that is that it’s expanding to Canada in October (Reboot Develop Red) and we can’t be more proud of our friends and ex-coworkers. Reboot Develop has quickly become everyone’s favorite conference - you get to stay in a 5-star hotel and hang out with industry celebrities, the coast is beautiful, and everyone is drunk and very friendly. What’s not to love?
Day 0 - Wednesday
Dubrovnik is around 600 km (373 miles) away from Zagreb. For our American readers that’s a short stroll down the street, but for our spoiled European asses that’s like FAR. The good flights we wanted were mostly booked months in advance, so we decided to make a road trip out of it. One group rented a van and several groups went by cars.
No, we call it Venice because it pisses Dini off and that's always fun.
I was in the group with Josip and Ivona ("The Meme Team™ rides together and dies together" was the reasoning), and our designated driver/babysitter/the voice of reason was Andrej. Our trip there was literally the most fun road trip I’ve ever been on - we had cake for breakfast, visited Josip’s mom in his hometown for lunch, and danced in our seats all the way there. We were absolutely sober the whole time and didn’t do anything stupid even once. Hi, mom!
This was very obviously The Fun Car. Fight me.
The van group was the only other that wanted to share their photos, but unfortunately they don't know how to take them. Apparently they had a bunch of booze in the van, so at least you can see them the same way they saw the world. Blurry af.
Day 1 - Thursday
We got up for breakfast totally not hungover and then went to the opening ceremony - a welcome greeting from Reboot’s CEO Damir was followed by a performance from a Finnish band National Nightmare and a keynote from Hidetaka Miyazaki and Fumito Ueda.
That's Damir over there on that stage. You can't really see him, but he's there. He's always there.
After that was over, everyone went on to do their own thing. Some people got coffee, some went to other talks, some just walked around and mingled, and some got drunk. I’ll tell you a little story and you can guess for yourself which group I was in.
A random photo from breakfast that I'm only posting because Dobrila looks cute and she's not here to murder me.
I was flipping through the conference booklet and saw that Eugen Harton, the DayZ project lead was gonna have a talk soon, so I was like “Hey guys, you know what would be cool? If we went to that and just sat in the front row. Like, let’s just sit there and stare.” I was fully prepared that people would just say no. However...
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!
Eugen was a champ, though - he was obviously confused when we walked in, but he didn’t let it show and it turned out to be fun and educational. Props for that!
Eugen, if you're reading this, we need you to know we were just being funny and we respect you and your company. Also, sorry about that one Reboot Develop years ago when I told you my name was Svetlana, tried to get you drunk at 9AM and talked to you exclusively in Serbian. Love you!
Our very own Pong and Andrej had a panel immediately after, so we had to run. The panel turned out to be very us - they thought they were gonna have a moderator, but apparently not, so it was just them and their mic. Pong covered everything, from the history of SCUM to what he had for breakfast, while Andrej was trying not to fall asleep, and then they switched. Like I said, it was very us and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Did I lie? I did not lie. They're the best, though.
The Reboot Develop football tournament was taking place later that evening, so we had to get ready for that. We had previously made a team and applied officially, and even made cute football uniforms for everyone - we changed into those, took our flares, smoke bombs and brass knuckles and went merrily on our way. Just kidding, we only brought a bunch of alcohol. We played two games, one against Cecil United which we won 8:0 (lol), and the other against SpecialEffect which we won 3:1. That meant we were through to the finals taking place the next day.
Sorry, Rami. Sports, right?
The football victory meant we had to celebrate, so we went to the “pool party” that was moved to an underground garage because of bad weather, got extremely drunk and then died.
And then there were the ones who only pretended they died. SHAME. SHAME. SHAME.
Day 2 - Friday
We rose from the dead around noon the next day. Well, I did, as well as a bunch of others, but apparently some nerds went to the morning panels/talks. I still can’t decide if that was brave or stupid.
I mean, that's fine I guess?
We went to lunch at the hotel and then went networking around the conference - what that means is you run into an industry person you know and ask them if they wanna do shots. They always do, so you do that. Rinse and repeat. Then they bring a friend who is an industry celebrity, so you get flustered and starstruck and ask if they wanna do shots, too. They do, so you do it again, exchange business cards, and say you’re gonna catch up over email because you’re too drunk to have a productive conversation. They feel the same, so it’s all good.
A selfie part of the team took while networking with each other.
The girls were also networking with each other.
The football tournament finals were happening that evening and we were all excited. First we played against Bongfish, the main sponsor of the whole conference. We won, but unfortunately we don’t remember the score - the players were, well, playing, and the spectators were too drunk to remember. Then we played against Croteam and lost. It still hurts too much to talk about this, so that’s the only info you’re getting. Silver is okay, too, I guess. It’s fine. We’re not salty. We most definitely did not key their cars after the game.
Later we went to another party and died again.
If this picture doesn't warm your heart just a little bit then you don't have one.
These look pretty nice, too. Sure, a gold trophy would've been nicer, but these are okay, too. No, really, it's cool. We're not mad.
Day 3 - Saturday
The last day of the conference was pretty weird. By that point I had slept for like 6 hours in 3 days, so I made the adult decision to try and make it through the day and then go to sleep at a normal time that night. If anyone saw a manic girl running around the beach at 6AM flashing crazy eyes at the seagulls, that was me, sorry about that. I spent the whole day in a sleep deprivation-induced haze, so I honestly have no idea what everyone else did that day. Apparently some people were sober enough to actually show up in public. It was really bizarre.
Some of them spent the whole conference Slav-squatting by the trashcans and no one knows why.
The best thing ever happened on that Friday, though. Ivona wanted to check out the sauna and, as she was walking into the spa area, she saw Josip sitting alone in the kiddie pool, very obviously under the influence of something. "Why are you in the kiddie pool, Josip?" she asked, even though she already knew the answer. He looked at her absolutely confused and said "Isn't this the jacuzzi?" This has already become a meme around the office and it will be told through the generations, so it was only fair you heard it as well. Sorry, Josip, love you!
A picture of Baby J thinking about his life choices.
People went to a supersecret Polish party that night that everyone was invited to and then died. I went to sleep like I said I would and didn’t die this time. Then I woke up at 4AM because I went to sleep too early, went down to the hotel lobby to see who’s up because I was lonely, met some cool Serbian dudes, got drunk and died.
Day 4 - Sunday
Just kidding! I didn’t die because I didn’t even go to sleep. The conference was over, so we had to check out and go home. Andrej told us to meet him in the lobby before breakfast, so I just skipped over there and pretended I just woke up. Sorry, Andrej, now you know! We checked out of the hotel, got in the car and immediately fell asleep.
I don't have any photos from Sunday because everyone was either hungover or driving, but have this one of us watching a football game because it looks cool.
Jokes aside, the whole trip was a great experience - we got to bond with each other, meet some wonderful people, go to some amazing talks, and learn new things from people we look up to. We’ve already bought our tickets for next year, so if you’re thinking about going, do it, and we’ll see you there!
