Scum recently became Devolver Digital’s biggest launch to date—on its first day of Early Access, no less. There’s little surprise at today’s announcement, then, that the game has sold over one million units.
To celebrate, every player will receive a golden DEagle .50 “the first time nature calls.” This is a limited time deal though—you’ll have until September 25 to claim your shiny, new handgun.
Additionally, players that have purchased the Support Pack will also receive a watch, imaginatively called a “Nice Watch.” While It doesn’t do much at the moment, future updates will see “more useful features” added.
You can check out the details, as well as the most recent patch notes, here. For more intellectual Scum reading, our Chris celebrated National Video Games Day with this gallery of players pooping off the dam.
Take last week’s Steam Charts, give them a little shuffle, and then breathe out a long, despondent sigh. Oh, and then entirely randomly add an Early Access racing sim. And then start sighing again, and never, ever stop.
It's National Video Games Day! I became aware of this thanks to a Twitter hashtag, which is the same way a lot of things are brought to my attention such as #talklikeapirateday and when people are #blessed. I'm honestly not sure what National Video Games Day is, or what it means, or if the entire thing is a completely fabricated holiday to get people to click on a hashtag.
But the nice thing about a probably-fake holiday is that you can celebrate it just about however you like! My choice: a gallery of players pooping off the edge of the towering dam in Early Access survival game Scum. Of all the landmarks on Scum's map, this seems to be the one people like to poop off of the most. Enjoy.

Scum's map is a pretty big one—144 square kilometers—and it can take a while to haul yourself from one end to the other in the Early Access survival game. But if you teleport yourself into the sky using the admin console, you can see a map that is actually much bigger. It's about four times as big—at least potentially. Scum is an island after all!
The image above shown in this reddit post, which was spotted in a Scum Discord channel and appears to have first originated from this post from a VK Scum group, shows the current playable area boxed in red.
You can even have a look for yourself. In singleplayer, opening the text chat (T) gives you access to admin commands. Type "#teleport [Character Name] 0 0 1000000" (no brackets around your actual character name) and you'll appear floating high in the air. Turn your camera and you'll see the wall forming a square around the playable area, and the rest lying beyond. There's also a weird floating mountain range, possibly some skybox scenery?
It's not just a matter of teleporting over the wall and exploring, though. Currently, the rest of the map is a just flat, featureless 2D plane. There's nothing physcially there, and if you try to visit via another teleportation command (#Teleport [Character Name] 0 650000 50000) you'll just plummet right through it as I did below.
I sent an email to Scum's team asking if this additional ghostly portion of the map was a planned expansion of the playing area for the future, or if this was the original size of the map prior that was scaled back prior to the Early Access launch.
Devolver's reply to my email was a bit noncommittal: "SCUM Island has more than what is seen at the moment and during Early Access the areas accessible to prisoners may change over time."
I suspect, at least, the map won't be getting smaller.

Early Access survival game Scum has a pretty intricate metabolism system. If your character is malnourished from not eating enough, they'll lose muscle mass and strength over time. Conversely, if they eat a lot, they'll put on weight. One player is taking that to new heights—and widths—by aiming to become the heaviest character in Scum. What's the amazing secret to weight gain?
"Mainly what I do is lay on the ground and eat fat."
That's what the player, who asked to be called Tojimaru, told me in a message on Reddit. Tojimaru has been playing approximately eight hours of Scum each day since the survival game launched into Early Access last week, and it sounds like most of that time has been spent eating.
"I'll eat fat until my stomach is nearly 100 percent full," Tojimaru says, "and when it drops a bit then I'll eat some more."
The fat Tojimaru eats is mostly from zombies, which can not only be killed in Scum but chopped up for parts: human steak, bones, guts, and slabs of fat. Having found a pistol and rifle, Tojimaru will sometimes also hunt deer or boar, but it's usually zombie fat that's being consumed.
"I'll poop and pee whenever it is necessary. When I'm deficient in Vitamin D, there is a nice patch of Psilocybe Cyanescens [mushrooms] that I visit from time to time and that will keep those numbers up for a while."
A screenshot in one of Tojimaru's Reddit posts shows a couch covered with steaks and rows of fat lined up in front of it, and an astounding 132,737 calories consumed to that point in the character's life displayed on the metabolism menu. The character's weight at that time was 160kg, which has since grown to 183.
There may be some hard limits on the percentage of body fat a character can have, even while gaining weight. "I cannot seem to get my storage fat to go beyond 43kg,"Tojimaru says. "It will fluctuate between 39 and 43. However, my weight has always been constantly increasing. Slowly but surely. I started I believe somewhere around 125~~ and so far am up to 188kg."
Along with fat and mushrooms, Tojimaru has experimented with eating things like butter and vegetable oil, which appear to add calories on the metabolism meter much more quickly than eating fat does. It doesn't seem to make the character gain weight at a greater rate, however.
"After that," Tojimaru says, "I haven't bothered to constantly look for those things and just stuck to good ol' fat." Bon appétit.
Survival game Scum has had an eventful first week in Early Access: leaping into the top ten games by playercount on Steam, including and then quickly removing some Nazi tattoos, and now, wiping out everyone's online characters in the latest patch. Along the way, according to Scum's twitter feed, it's sold 700,000 copies. That's... quite a week.
As far as the character wipes go, a patch was issued today to address an issue with singleplayer saved games, and fixing it required wiping all online characters:
"To enable single-player save, we needed to change save files format," the patch notes read. "This means that all characters on all servers have been wiped. Sorry for the inconvenience, we'll try to make wipes as less frequent as possible. Please don't forget that game is still under heavy development so things like this can happen."
I checked and sure enough, my online character is completely gone. Oddly enough, my singleplayer character is still fully intact. Look, here he is, taking a dump in the woods with all his gear, post-patch. What a jerk.
So, it sort of sucks that all online players have been wiped on all servers, but these things happen in Early Access from time to time. It can be frustrating to login and find all your stuff gone, especially since in Scum you not only collect gear but also build and improve skills while you play.
On the plus side, the patch notes also include the "first wave of server optimization that should decrease lag," adds admin commands for singleplayer games, and fixes a number of bugs. It also makes the sentries remember if they've seen you before. From now on you'll get one warning if you're spotted, but one warning only. If they see you again later, they'll just straight-up shoot you. Fun!
We've also been playing a bit of Scum, and recently prepared a Scum guide for beginners, as well as a guide on how to find the best guns and gear on Scum's map. Could come in handy now that we're all fresh spawns again.
