Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - Hinkle2K

Civilization VI shakes up the series formula with a few key changes, such as Unstacking Cities and the switch from Workers to Builders. Another key change we want to talk about is Active Progression.

What is Active Progression?

“Active Progression gives Civilization players the ability to speed up their progress through the game by completing activities in the game world,” says Ed Beach, lead designer on Civilization VI. “It’s the idea that having your units and cities achieve successes helps your civ unlock technological secrets and build a strong society.”

Active Progression had its genesis when the Civilization VI team tried to look at the series’ Technology Tree, which hasn’t evolved much throughout the years, with fresh eyes. “Our biggest complaint with the old model was that the tech tree was divorced from the action in the game world; we always wanted a closer tie. Shouldn’t it matter whether or not you have boats if you are trying to understand Sailing or Navigation?”

It does matter, and it makes sense from a practical standpoint: If you build a city on the coast, naturally your people should have a greater affinity towards sailing and have access to that technology much sooner than a civilization whose initial cities were all land-locked.

Active Progression also presents players with more consistent, thought-engaging action throughout the entire span of the game. “We just had a playtest last night where one of our new Civilization VI testers commented that the Active Progression system kept him thinking every single turn of the game,” Beach happily shares. “He was faced with so many possible unlocks he could trigger that he never was skipping through turns waiting for something to happen. As an experienced player of many earlier Civilization titles, he was amazed at how much more engaging the Active Progression system was.”

While the Civilization VI team finds the relevance of Active Progression remains consistent throughout the entire game experience, it really shines in the Ancient Era due to its strong impact in plotting the course of your civilization. That’s when you’re identifying potential boosts and deciding what kind of civilization you will be, making Active Progression a crucial tool necessary for success.

Finally, we should mention that Active Progression not only applies to Technologies, but also parallel the Civics tree, a second progression system that is particularly useful for unlocking Governments, Social Policies, Wonders and new diplomatic options. “What’s cool is that the Active Progression system applies equally to both trees, and there are even a number of cases where activity in one tree triggers a boost in the other,” Beach reveals. “Even if you are going for a Science/Space Race victory, progressing with culture through the Civics tree can be a very important component of your strategy.”

We can’t wait for players to discover those complex intermingled boosts in the Active Progression system when Civilization VI launches on October 21, 2016!

Sid Meier's Civilization® V - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Adam Smith)

Last month I spent four hours playing Civilization VI on a very hot day in central London. I came away wishing I could play for another four hundred hours, and also wishing that I had an ice cream. Mint and choc chip preferably.

Since then, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what Civ VI is doing and how its many systems create a brilliant competitive race through history while also producing some weird tensions around the idea of what a civilization actually is in the context of the game. Are cultures defined by the choices they make, by their surroundings, their neighbours, by determination or by chance? Whatever the answer might be, one thing is sure: Cleopatra hates> me.

Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - Hinkle2K

Pedro II, born in 1825, was the second and final ruler of the Empire of Brazil, a 19th-century state comprised of territories encompassing Brazil and Uruguay. Civilization V players will undoubtedly recognize Pedro II, who led Brazil in the game after being introduced in the Brave New World expansion.

Groomed for rule from the age of five after his father abdicated the throne and fled to Europe, Pedro II was known for his strong devotion to his people despite his resentment towards the monarchy that robbed him of so much of his childhood. Despite this adversity and the crumbling state of the Empire his father left him with, Pedro II managed to steer Brazil towards prosperity until he was suddenly usurped in a surprise military coup d'état and exiled to Europe, where he remained until his death in 1891.

Pedro II earned the respect and admiration of some of the greatest scholars at the time, and is forever remembered as a champion of knowledge, culture and science.

Unique Unit: Minas Geraes

This vessel was one of two unique battleships built for the Brazilian Navy in the early 20th century. Intended to secure Brazil as one of the international powers of the day, its creation sparked a naval arms race in South America and established Brazil as a strong naval power at that time.

Unique District: Street Carnival

The world-famous Carnival is an annual celebration featuring eccentric costumes and elaborate rhythmic parades across Brazil. Carnival varies between regions and goes on day-and-night in some parts of Brazil. It is easily the most famous holiday in the country and, in cities like Rio de Janeiro, can draw millions of participants, both locals and foreigners alike.

Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - melaine.brou

Born an Italian noblewoman, Catherine de’ Medici was wed to King Henry II of France and served as Queen from 1547 until her husband’s death in 1559. Her influence would extend beyond this brief period as Queen, however, as she went on to bear three sons who would each become King of France during her lifetime.

Her offspring each ruled France during a period of continuous civil and religious war. Despite the constant threat of complex and seemingly insurmountable conflict, Catherine kept the French monarchy intact as she championed both policies of compromise with the rebellious Protestant class and later more hardline stances against them. She was one of the most powerful women in Europe during her lifetime and was known to be a ruthless individual whose efforts inarguably kept the French monarchy in power during one of France’s most tumultuous periods.

Unique Unit: Garde Imperiale

A group of elite veteran soldiers formed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799, the Garde Imperiale often received better compensation, equipment, living quarters and rations during war, much to the dismay of the other soldiers in service. The Garde Imperiale were divided into three different groups - the Old, the Middle and the Young - and served Napoleon in all of his wars until their end at the Battle of Waterloo, where the Middle Guard retreated (for the first and only time) during the battle and left the Old and Young Guards to defend Napoleon’s withdrawal while simultaneously succumbing to the punishing cannons of the combined British and Prussian opposition.

Unique Improvement: Château

The term chateau has historically applied to large country homes with adjoining lands. In the 1600s, wealthy French lords marked the countryside with these elegant and luxurious mansions, though many were later burned during the myriad peasant and populist revolutions that swept through the nation. Numerous chateaus remain to this day as tourist attractions, including Catherine’s favorite, the Chateau de Chenonceau, site of many of her spectacular nighttime parties and the first fireworks display seen in France.

Those who pre-order Civilization VI will exclusively gain early access* to the Aztec civ, led by Montezuma I, when the game launches on October 21, 2016. After 90 days, this content will unlock for all Civilization VI players at no additional charge.

Montezuma I, born in 1398, was the fifth king of the city of Tenochtitlan and second emperor of the Aztecs. His 29-year reign was categorized by a major consolidation and expansion of the Aztec Empire, also known as the Triple Alliance, as well as enacting a new series of sumptuary laws – which aim to curb rampant consumption of goods and decadent lifestyles – that reinforced an already existing class system permeating every facet of Aztec life.

Montezuma I’s reign ended when he passed away from unknown causes in 1469 AD. He was succeeded by his 19-year-old son Axayacatl, who later sired Montezuma II – the Aztec leader who managed to lose it all to Hernan Cortes and his group of conquistadors.

Unique Unit: Eagle Warrior

Within the Aztec army existed two classes of elite infantry: the Jaguar Warriors and the Eagle Warriors. Eagle Warriors were comprised of the bravest young men of noble birth who had managed to take the most prisoners in battle. Only after taking 20 prisoners intact enough to serve as human sacrifice could a young man be considered for Eagle Warrior status.

Unique Building: Tlachtli

When Aztecs weren’t waging war, capturing prisoners and sacrificing them to the gods, they often enjoyed a bit of sport. The Tlachtli, a ball court shaped like a capital I, was home to many games, including one particular game similar to basketball in which the goal is to place a ball through the opposition’s stone hoop; however, in the Aztec version, you can’t use your hands.

Wonder: Huey Teocalli

Otherwise known as the Greater Temple of the Aztecs, the Huey Teocalli is a giant terraced pyramid leading up to a temple where some of the most important Aztec rituals were performed. Unfortunately, there is very little left of the Huey Teocalli today, save for some scattered ruins in the Zocalo main square of Mexico City’s downtown district.

Qin Shi Huang was a ruthless leader, responsible for conquering and uniting the various warring states of China. He went on to become the nation’s first emperor in 221 BC.

During his reign, Qin Shi Huang’s military generals greatly expanded the size of China’s territory. Qin Shi Huang was known for enacting major economic and political reforms that helped bring standardization to the many varied Chinese states, as well as unifying each state’s walls into one singular Great Wall of China. Finally, Qin Shi Huang is known for building the world-famous Terracotta Army – a literal army of life-sized clay soldiers.

Unique Unit: Crouching Tiger Cannon

Gunpowder, discovered in China around 9th Century AD, was initially only used for fireworks and celebratory activities; however, its application eventually spread to warfare. And so the “Crouching Tiger” was born, a rough prototype of a cannon that was essentially an iron tube, wrapped in thick rope and sealed at one end. The Crouching Tiger was reported to be in use throughout China in 1368 and even as late as 1592.

Unique Improvement: Great Wall

In Civilization V, any player could construct the Great Wall Wonder; in Civilization VI, the Great Wall is a unique improvement exclusive to China. While the idea of a wall is certainly not unique, The Great Wall of China is the most impressive, inspiring awe for over 2000 years.
