This week Firefly co-founders Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette shed light on the origins and future of our newly-announced online city builder! Tracing their professional roots back to past studios and a certain roman city sim that started it all, Simon and Eric discuss how all roads have led to Romans. Having coded, designed, produced, composed music and created art for all three entries in the classic Caesar series, many of Firefly’s current staff and collaborators are mining this rich strategy heritage for our new MMO. Add this to Firefly’s experience developing CivCity: Rome and you have the perfect team to take this classic gameplay online in Romans: Age of Caesar!



Developed by a new internal team, Romans: Age of Caesar is our spiritual successor to Stronghold Kingdoms and a completely new strategic challenge for fans of Firefly Studios games. We’ll be levelling up the city builder with Romans by introducing shared roman cities and a single world map on which all players can trade, battle barbarians and explore the empire! Governors will work together to share resources and defeat common threats as they contribute toward the prosperity of their central city. With each new city built players will be able to explore further out, discover new resources and restore the empire to its former glory.



Planned for PC and mobile with full cross-platform play, Romans: Age of Caesar is scheduled to release later this year.

We have just announced Romans: Age of Caesar, a co-operative grand strategy MMO and spiritual successor to our online castle builder! Pre-registration for the game’s first closed Alpha is now open, with our announcement trailer revealing Romans to prospective governors worldwide.



Building on the unique MMO design of Stronghold Kingdoms, Romans is an online co-op city builder with thousands of players working together to rebuild Rome. The result is a shared world builder that returns to the classic Roman setting designer Simon Bradbury and producer Eric Ouellette made their name with before founding Firefly Studios in 1999.



In Romans players must rebuild the empire as they share resources, re-establish trade routes and protect their cities from barbarian invasion. Experience classic city builder gameplay online across on an entire continent as you build, trade and fight together with 15 other players in each city. Revive the republic and restore the Roman Empire to its former glory!

Not only will you be feasting your eyes on a full Stronghold Next reveal this spring, you'll also be getting a brand new game announcement next week! Unrelated to Stronghold but still a classic Firefly Studios strategy game, this new title will be announced on YouTube on Thursday February 7th.

It gives us great please to finally reveal both that our Stronghold Next reveal is planned for the spring and that we're taking Stronghold to E3! You can expect to see a load of Stronghold Next gameplay and news this year, starting with the world's best known gaming expo. We can't wait to show you what we've been working on in the form of an official Stronghold Discord, feature length documentary, behind the scenes videos and plenty of raw gameplay.

For our other fans we have a brand new game reveal planned for next week, as well as plenty of Stronghold Kingdoms updates. Our new title will be another historical strategy game featuring classic Firefly gameplay mixed with a few new innovations, so stick around for the full announcement! Following our extensive Mega Q&A series we’re rounding off the year with a full development update for Stronghold Next! We dive into the production, programming, art and design of Next in our first ever dev diary for the upcoming castle sim. Watch as four Stronghold developers provide a snapshot of where we’re at in terms of production, as well as revealing brand new details about the game!

Player feedback is already a huge part of the development for Next and in our end of year update we go into specifics. We’re improving castle walls, adding classic castle life features, a more cinematic single player campaign and more. In addition the team are planning technical improvements including staged destruction for your castle, better textures and of course all-new units with fresh animations.

What is a Tourney?
Tourneys are limited-time contests in which players across all game worlds (not including special worlds such as Rise of the Wolf) compete in various in-game PvE activities for fame and in-game loot. Each Tourney is focussed on a different area of gameplay, so there’s a Tourney for everyone whether you’re a farmer, trader, diplomat or warlord!

How do I enter a Tourney?
There is no button to press, invitation to accept or Gods to appease, as you simply log in and play Stronghold Kingdoms as normal. Once you take an action related to the current Tourney (e.g. Forage a package during ‘Frenzied Foraging’) you are automatically entered into that Tourney and added to the leaderboard.

Please Note: Your ‘Frenzied Foraging’ Tourney score is determined by the number of packets retrieved via scouting and not the total number of goods. For more information on what constitutes a package check out our entry on the official Stronghold Kingdoms Wiki.

How many Lords can join a multiplayer game? Will there be healing units? Will regular troops be able to knock down castle walls? Together these smaller issues make a huge difference to each Stronghold, so we're taking the opportunity to lay out our plans at this early stage.

In-Game Event

Be the first to uncover festive resource stashes (shaped like presents) scattered across the world map and with a little luck you could claim some rare loot! After a present has been opened, the stash will revert to its original form such as wood, spices, ale or other resources. So if you have no luck in the daily calendar, be sure to send out the scouts before your neighbors do!



While the Advent Calendar will vanish on December 26th, both the snowy landscape and special present resource stashes will remain active until January 1st. Your chances of winning may depend on luck, but with two chances daily and a guaranteed prize on Christmas Day not a single farmer, trader or warlord should enter the new year empty handed.

Our long-awaited Tournaments Update for Stronghold Kingdoms is now live across all game worlds! Following last month’s community-driven feature update, we have been building the new 'Tourney' system for some time now. It therefore gives us great pleasure to finally launch the update with our first ever tournament: ‘Canine Control’!

Tourneys are time-limited contests in which players compete across all game worlds to complete various PvE activities in search of glory and in-game loot. These activities cover pretty much all aspects of the game, making each facet of Stronghold Kingdoms even more rewarding. This new update is designed to combine the short-term dedication of quests with the world-wide competition of the popular Domination Worlds.
