Greetings Champions! Here's what happening in the Realm this week:

Year 7 is On Its Way
Welcome to Year 7, Champions! We're back from winter holidays and we've got a lot to showcase to you all this week & in the coming update. For those not watching our Socials, we've revealed that Trials is returning (more on that soon!) as well as our lovely Dragrin friends on the way. There have also been a number of Item store teasers and reveals.

We'll be explaining more later in the week, but we wanted to briefly chat about some of the initial polarized response. Paladins' Item Store is core to the gameplay experience, and something we have learned over time is a very fragile space for iteration. With that in mind, we spent a lot of time behind the scenes last year slowly developing an evolution of the store to emphasize the things players love.

This includes new Items, reworked Items, and buffs to underwhelming Items. Our goal is to have an Item Store that truly reflects Paladins' history and strengths, while having some new aspects to help guide us into the future.

We'll be releasing a blog later this month with tons of details, but until then keep your eyes out for when we release the Developer Update and Notes for 7.1 later this week!

Wild Update Ahead
Year-launch updates are always a big deal for Paladins, but this one especially is kicking off a fun new era for the game, and we as a team as super excited to get players' hands on it. Our Update Reveal is right around the corner and PTS will follow soon after. We really hope the community digs in and finds things to love, as well as guides us in the ways to improve this for them.

It's basically our chance to show you all our vision of where Paladins is headed in 2024, and I think you all will love it. By this time next week, you all will know all and I'll be here to listen. Until then!

    • Vora
    • Yagorath

Returning
Swift Siege

Balance
Ash
Talent
Slug Shot
  • Now deals an extra 50 damage per shot
Ash is a notoriously durable Frontline, with her first and third Talents giving her efficient ways to survive in a fight even longer than her base kit allows. This left her second Talent as the black sheep, focusing on Ash’s damage potential as a skirmisher where she can poke and pressure enemies while hunkering down on the objective or defending choke points. We wanted to push the validity of this playstyle, and so we’ve buffed the damage on Slug Shot - allowing Ash to more aggressively trade blows with her enemies and assert her dominance on the battlefield.
Betty
Talent
Fiery Disposition
  • Damage over Time is now only applied by Grenade Launcher
Fiery Disposition pushed Betty’s damage a bit over the line that we’re comfortable with. With every stray hit racking up percentile damage - fighting Betty could become frustrating regardless of durability. This was especially apparent with Hail of Bombs, with its powerful area denial ability also burning enemies' health away, cleaning up team fights a little too efficiently. Fiery Disposition now only triggers on Grenade Launcher hits, rewarding Betty for aggression and accuracy without her being able to snowball the damage into her other abilities.
Khan
Cards
Chokehold
  • Old effect removed
  • New effect: Increase the travel speed and distance of Commander's Grab by [4|4]%
Chokehold’s original implementation wasn’t really valuable for Khan - he had more efficient healing in his base kit already and more worthwhile cards to take up the valuable slots in his loadout. Thus, following some community feedback, we’ve reworked the card to instead augment Commander’s Grab’s range. With this new range Khan can more aggressively push and pick off valuable targets, as well as gain access to some cheeky traversal routes he couldn’t previously access.
Koga
Talents
Adrenaline Junkie
  • Increased Damage needed to generate 1 energy from 80 ➡️ 160
Adrenaline Junkie’s interaction with some Cards & Items can lead to situations where Koga has essentially unlimited energy - especially against Shields - if he lands his shots. This change is a stop gap measure as we investigate additional solutions to this problem, preventing Koga from generating energy as rapidly as he could before.  [/img]
Lillith
Talents
Murderous Intent
  • Old effect removed
  • New effect: Hitting an enemy with Heart of Crimson while they're affected by Blood Hex or Swarm increases your movement and attack speed by 10% for 4s. Stacks up to 3 times.
The original Murderous Intent was difficult to use and very niche, generally outclassed by her other two Talents. We’ve reworked it to maintain the essence of the original, which focused on landing shots, but instead made it a stim that rewards aggressive Lillith’s for accuracy and combos with her other abilities.
Maeve
Talents
Cat Burglar
  • Reduced damage bonus from 30% ➡️ 25%
  • Reduced bonus threshold from 5s ➡️ 3s
We felt Cat Burglar was a little too generous with the damage boost Maeve received, both in value and duration. We’ve hit the damage bonus slightly to still maintain the strength of the Talent but bring its effectiveness down, and we’ve reduced the duration to encourage more aggression after Maeve triggers the bonus.
Mal’Damba
Talents
Ripened Gourd
  • Now deals 60% damage to enemies instead of 0%
Supports bring a lot to the table during a match, mixing sustain with damage to uniquely alter the trajectory of a match. We felt that Ripened Gourd’s penalty was too harsh in the current era of Paladins, and as such we’ve reduced the penalty to bring Mal’Damba more in line with newer Supports and their impact during a fight.
Omen
Talents
Umbral Lance
  • Changed effect to be “Aphotic Reaver no longer ramps down, but its spread is reduced by 50% and its fire rate is reduced by 30%.”
Umbral Lance was too effective at negating Omen’s trade off with his weapon, turning his adaptable mid-range damage into a consistent high-DPS long-range machine. We’re updating the Talent to instead lock him into Aphotic Reaver’s halfway point, providing the consistency this Talent aimed to originally give him, without having it overshadow a skilled player’s ability to optimize the weapon’s modes.
Ruckus
Talent
Flux Generator
  • Increased Shield granted from 1300 ➡️ 1500
  • Now also reduces Emitter’s cooldown by 1s & while Emitter is active, Ruckus gains Immunity to Crowd Control
Ruckus has always struggled to maintain the frontline as a Frontline, his high DPS being the main deterrent to engaging him directly on the point. His durability would often get the better of him however, as other Frontlines could soak enough damage to let their team take Ruckus out. Ruckus (and Bolt) have always been one of the more difficult Champions to master, requiring a non-intuitive playstyle for a Frontline to play effectively. So, we’re giving Flux Generator a much-needed buff to give Ruckus a more viable “in your face” playstyle to help him solo-tank for his team. It should be noted that the Crowd Control Immunity only applies while the Shield is up - so buy Wrecker or face the wrath of a very angry Goblin!
Vatu
Talent
Enveloping Shadows
  • Now has an internal cooldown of 3s
Vatu is a very polarizing Champion - incredibly capable when piloted correctly but struggles when not played optimally. Enveloping Shadows embodies this, as it allows Vatu to steamroll a lobby if in the right hands, and we felt it gives him a bit too much value for hitting shots. It’ll still offer Vatu that prized cooldown reduction - but triggering less frequently will allow for some counter play against his overwhelming mobility being on cooldown more often.
Bug Fixes
General
  • Fixed an issue where Quests were not showing the amount of Event Pass XP they awarded
  • Fixed an issue where gamepad players could accidentally buy Items even when the Item Shop was closed
Champions
Bomb King
  • Fixed an issue where players on poor connections could infinitely deploy Poppy Bomb
Imani
  • Fixed an issue where summoning Dragon’s Call would freeze some PC clients
    • Imani has been re-enabled following this fix!

Goodbye 2023
This is the last TWitR for the year, and what a year it has been! This tradition took a hiatus and changed twice, every game update came with new ups and downs, but no matter what the community stayed strong and created some amazing moments many of us won't forget. From the entire team here at Evil Mojo, we thank you for your passion and playership this year, as well as all the support you've shown us as we continue to work to make Paladins the best it can be. We're so excited to show you all what's next for Paladins in 2024, but until then have a happy holiday season and enjoy Aico's Vault!

Exclusive Interview with Grand Magister Lian
Recently, we got the chance to sit down with the woman helming the Magistrate herself, Lian of House Aico. Her ascent was one filled with controversy and speculation, but she's here to set the record straight after her first full year in charge has ended.

So, how do you view the relationship between House Aico & the Magistrate?

Starting off strong I see. When I look at the Magistrate versus my own House, I see an institution that has both evolved and regressed with the times. In the days of many, it made sense for such a democratizing structure. However, time hasn't been kind to other Houses and we can't let their end lead to our own. House Aico serves to both honor that history, but move us forward into a new age of action.

You're thinking of a single-bodied future. What about Houses still with claims; Arturos, Bomba?

Arturos still is as accepted as ever. In fact, I recently ran into... Cassie. She and I do not often see eye to eye, but if she ever wished to return to her seat at the table, I'd welcome it with open arms.

As for Bomba?
Rei approached the Grand Magister & whispered something into her ear prior to an answer.

We don't currently see a path for House Bomba to amend for their crimes. There's always a chance, however we don't believe in Kings and Queens, so until change occurs...

Understood. Why wait till now to speak so openly about the Magistrate's future?

When I first became Grand Magister there were issues that took precedence. We had just come back from Yagorath, so reconstruction and defense were priorities. The Abyss wasn't going to wait for us to rebuild strength.

Speaking of the Abyss, rumors have been swirling around the events at Ascension Peak. How does the Magistrate feel about a former target falling to an enemy?

Our history with Jenos and the monks of the Tau-Kor Monastery is complicated, but I'm saddened to see them displaced. I'll be candid; we rushed to them in an attempt to assist but we couldn't invest many resources to foreign affairs. That's why we have the Paladins, after all.

Your administration, then, recognizes the Paladins? That's an intense departure from Karne.

The Paladins, under Inara, are a welcome presence in the Realm and a departure from Valera's Resistance. We still consider all those working with the remnants of the Resistance, as well as the Thousand Hands Guild, active insurgents.

Finally, what's next for the Magistrate?

I'm glad you asked. There's been a lot of stress and concern over the past few years, and we want to show that the Magistrate still stands to protect and server her people. That's why our archmage Rei has arranged for a parade, roaming throughout all our territory that ends in of our beloved Aico Tundra. We invite all citizens to join us somewhere along the route and celebrate!

Quick Trip to the Arcade
As many of you have probably noticed, we swapped Onslaught this week for an Arcade queue. This queue features all of our main non-Siege modes with player-favorite maps. Payload, Onslaught, KotH, and TDM are all within this one queue at random, meaning for the first time all our core modes are (somewhat) available at once.

This was originally meant to be an LTM, but we thought we'd give a more-Core period in the spotlight. We'd love to hear feedback on the mode, and plan to restore Onslaught back to its place this weekend!

As to the why, look no further than the feedback form for Midnight Masquerade! Here were the results for this very idea:

Thanksgivin'
2023 has been quite the year, and while we aren't done with it yet, we wanted to take a moment to highlight how our community & Paladins as a whole has made its way through together. For those keeping track, some of the things we got to share with you all:

  • Season 6: Emergence
  • Emergence Community Patch
  • Midnight Masquerade
  • Anniversary
  • Desert Omens
  • Valor's End
  • ???
In each of these updates we made a lot of changes & occasional mistakes, but we've been really proud of how far we've come and what we've been able to do with you all. From returning content like Rise of Furia & Siege Remixed to new creations like Nyx, Subway, and Omen; this year has been proof that Paladins is at its best when developer and players together explore what is possible in our Realm.

Regardless of where you live or if you celebrate Thanksgiving, we want to express our deepest thanks for being with us & hope you make sure to tell others how much they mean to you sometime soon. After the past few years, there can never be too much love shared.

Paladins Chronicles: Series 2
Recently, we kicked off Series 2 of Paladins Chronicles, our web outlet for lore. With Nyx & Omen victorious the Abyss begins to impose themselves across the Realm, but some areas are more protected than others. To start us on our next saga, we start in the Lunar Coast as Io works to regain strength and a witness watches over the bazaar. (If you want to catch up on past entries, visit here & sort by Lore!)

Modes Oh My
Now that you all have gotten a chance to play all 3 LTMs for this patch, we'll be keeping an eye on feedback and favorites as we spend some weekends with old classics.

We started a poll to see which one has left the largest immediate impression, and at time of writing Classic Maps is proving loved!

We've got a few more LTMs to share later in the year but until then, enjoy these new additions and prepare for some evolutions down the road.

About Those Servers
Discourse around servers has always been a mainstay in Paladins, but we felt it was time to address some of the recent concerns and confusion around them.

First, we want to apologize for some minor disruptions players experienced over the weekend. We had a reoccurring issue where players were unable to queue due to outages of the process that aids match creation. Traditionally, we tend to stay quiet & fix these issues quickly with little said, but we wanted to share in the spirit of transparency. The core of the problem is being investigated, but we don't expect too many future instances of this specific issue.

Another topic we've seen a lot of discourse about is servers for the SEA region. As some have felt, the SEA region has been merged into Japan, meaning they share servers. We do not make these choices lightly, but after watching the population & matchmaking time for both regions, we feel this is the best way to keep a healthy queue time for SEA players. In a future update, we'll be removing the SEA option from our UI for clarity on which regions our servers are located in.

This is an area where there is a lot of assumptions around how our game functions & what makes certain issues arise, so moving forward we will try to share information as we can in hopes that players can better understand it and be considerate when we have to make fixes.

Winter is Coming
As Halloween departs & the Christmas music unthaws, we on the team are both reflecting on 2023 for Paladins, as well as looking ahead to what we plan for 2024. We've experimented a lot with update formats, reveals, and the type of content we bring to you all as players. We appreciate the compassion and excitement you all have shared with us and look forward to when we can talk more about what's coming next!

We still have a few surprises up our sleeves for 2023, but expect a bit of a quieter period as we focus on delivering the next major update. In the meantime, there will plenty of LTMs, XP events, and Chronicles to share along the way!

We've Been Fed
Last week, we released our Valor's End feedback form! Now, we're happy to share 3000 players responded before the form closed! The team is looking through all the opinions shared & using it to inform future updates and decisions. However, not all questions require a ton of analysis, for example:

You all REALLY like Cards to the Max, and Swift Siege is quite popular for its debut! We'll be taking this into account for future LTMs as well as possible improvements to existing ones. Over the next few months, we'll talk about other bits of feedback we got & how we are planning to act.

Why Stop Now?
We started this section to celebrate alongside our artists during Inktober, but it felt strange to stop doing so. We may vary in how much art we share, but consider this a permanent fixture! Let's get into some fanart!
