Commanders!

Today, we’d like to show you another historical skin that we are working on – Russian T-90MS with the Nakidka camouflage.

Nakidka is a special system, developed in the early 2000s in Russia by the “NII Stali” military research institute in Moscow. In its core, it’s a camouflage made of an undisclosed radio-absorbing and IR-dampening material, intended to make large vehicles such as tanks easy to conceal on the battlefield, even from radars and thermal imagers.

According to various Russian sources, it’s quite effective, reducing the range the U.S. Boeing E-8 Joint STARS is able to identify wheeled targets from tracked ones (based on different Doppler effect signatures) from approximately 180km to roughly 30-40km.

The first prototype was likely shown to the public in 2005-2006 on a T-72B MBT, leading to some purchases of the system by the Armenian military. By 2005, the cost of one set was 2675 USD. The Russian military itself seems to not have adopted this system and it is intended mostly for export.

The model we have decided to implement in Armored Warfare comes from 2012, when an upgraded Nakidka system was demonstrated on a T-90MS MBT intended for export. It consists of a basic striped camouflage (ochre, brown and green), covered by green netting resembling artificial grass.

Like we mentioned before, the skin will be available for the T-90MS Tier 9 Main Battle Tank during an upcoming November event. We hope that you will enjoy this skin as much as we enjoyed creating it for you and, as always:

We have prepared one more offer for this weekend – the opportunity to obtain the Armata 152 Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank.

The Armata 152 is a version of the T-14 Armata, armed with larger cannon. One of the upgrades considered for the T-14 Armata was the increase of its caliber to 152mm in order to absolutely, positively destroy anything with the first shot. The 2A83 smoothbore is a behemoth of a gun, designed in the last days of the Soviet empire for the next generation of super-tanks. It’s massive, heavy and quite costly to produce, but, most importantly, it was never truly needed to deal with the western MBTs since the standard 125mm guns were (and still are) up to the task. That is why it never found its way on any Soviet MBT with even the standard T-14 Armata being armed with an improved 125mm cannon. You can, however, experience its awesome firepower in Armored Warfare! Learn more about it in a dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the T-14 Armata 152 is a Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank. While not firing as fast as its 125mm counterpart, the 152mm rounds do enormous damage, often eliminating weaker opponents with a single shot. And then there’s the platform itself – the Armata, the most modern Main Battle Tank in the world. Earn it and use it to dominate!

The Armata 152 Tier 10 Premium MBT is available in our Web Shop via Loot Crates. Collect 100 blueprint pieces from these crates to obtain the vehicle.

We hope that you will enjoy the offer and, as always:

Normally, we celebrate Halloween with some truly scary stuff. You know what we mean; lootboxes, creative mission conditions, maybe even a garage that makes a loud noise every now and then. This year, however... well, let’s face it, it’s been scary enough. Let us therefore celebrate this year’s end of October with a generally non-terrifying gift.

Between October 31 and November 3, 2020 (15:00 CET), apart from a 30% Commander XP income bonus, a free bundle will be available on MY.GAMES Market, containing:
  • Special Halloween camouflage called Walpurgis Night
  • Vampire player avatar
  • 3 Halloween decals
We hope that you will enjoy this Halloween even with what’s going on in the world and wish you safe and pleasant holidays.

PS: We were just kidding; the screaming garage is still on the menu, boys!

This week, we’ve prepared a special event for you. Normally, we only run one Special Operation as a part of the weekend War Games mode. This week, however, we have enabled all the older Special Operations tied into one chain, including American Dream. As usual, they will be available in their original order one by one (you need to pass the previous mission to get to the next one, same goes for the entire operations). Since there are considerably more missions than usual, we'll be issuing double the amount of reward Loot Crates this weekend (they will be available once per 10 missions).

For this event, we’d also like to invite you to a special contest. The rules are simple – by playing solo (platoons are not allowed) either a Tier 6 or a Tier 9-10 vehicle, deal as much damage as you can in every single available mission from the first mission of Caribbean Crisis to the last mission of American Dream (which needs to be won as well for your results to count).

Take a screenshot of each played mission’s results (General and Detailed tab please), add them to an archive (or Imgur album, for example) and link it to the Contest channel on our official Discord along with the following information:
  • Result (the sum of all damage dealt by you from all played missions)/Tier/In-game nickname
There will be two results categories – one for Tier 6 and one for Tier 9-10. The three best results from each of these two categories will receive the following prizes:
  • First place: CATTB Tier 10 Premium MBT (or its price in Gold if you have it already)
  • Second place: ZTQ-15 Tier 9 Premium LT (or its price in Gold if you have it already)
  • Third place: XM247 Tier 5 Premium AFV (or its price in Gold if you have it already)
You have until Tuesday, November 3 2020, 20:00 CET to submit your results.

Please note:
  • One player can win in both categories
  • Platoons are not allowed
Good luck and see you on the battlefield!

Between October 29 and November 5, 2020, the following items will be available:

Warhammer Skin for M1A2

This skin for the M1A2 Tier 8 progression Main Battle Tank is based on the real American Abrams tanks, which were seen and photographed during the Iraq War. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

This skin is available in a bundle along with the following items:
  • Iraq War ochre base paint (used by the U.S. Army)
  • U.S. Cavalry decal
  • U.S. Company decal
  • Thunderbolt decal (this historical decal appeared on a real early Abrams in honor of General Creighton Abrams’ personal Sherman tank during the Second World War)
Please note that the bundle includes the skin but not the M1A2 MBT itself. This tank needs to be obtained via progression directly in the game.

MERDC Camouflages

The MERDC camouflages are based on the patterns from the 1970s, when the U.S. Mobility Equipment Research & Design Command (MERDC) developed a system for camouflaging armored vehicles. You can read more about these patterns in our dedicated article.

There are seven patterns available:
  • Grey Desert
  • Red Desert
  • Snow Temperate, Open Terrain
  • Snow Temperate, Trees
  • Europe Summer
  • Europe Winter
  • Tropics

All seven are available in a discounted bundle. Each of these camouflages can be installed on any vehicle that has the camouflage customization feature available. These camouflages can be used in all three environments.

Stryker ADATS

ADATS stands for “Air Defense Anti-Tank System,” describing its purpose very well. The system is intended to engage both air and ground armored targets. It was developed in the 1980s by a Swiss company called Oerlikon-Contraves and was offered as an interesting hybrid that would be able to deal with both Soviet tanks and helicopters or attack planes. Unfortunately for it, it came too late – only Canada would actually accept it in service and the end of the Cold War meant the end to all attempts at its large-scale introduction. The ADATS missiles were quite large but, more importantly, extremely fast and were certain to be extremely destructive to any Soviet armored targets, even though this thankfully never had to be tested in real combat. The ADATS turret was offered for a wide variety of platforms and was actively installed on a vehicle that is kind of like a cousin to the Stryker, the Canadian LAV-III. In this configuration, the vehicle was called MMEV.

In Armored Warfare, Stryker ADATS is a Tier 9 Premium Tank Destroyer. It is a wheeled vehicle armed with two weapon systems – powerful long-range guided missiles and short-range unguided rockets, offering it some survivability in short range combat as well as the ability to deal tremendous damage if left to its devices.

Griffin 120mm

The Armored Warfare version of the Griffin Light Tank is based on an early 2016 tech demonstrator, intended to show the U.S. military during the AUSA 2016 conference that General Dynamics meant business. It was built as a private venture; effectively a scaled-up example of General Dynamics was capable of providing when it came to highly mobile vehicles with a lot of firepower for the U.S. airborne forces. The U.S. Army was impressed and the design has since evolved into what is generally referred to as the MPF Light Tank. You can read more about this vehicle in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Griffin 120mm is a Tier 8 Premium Light Tank and a powerful, fast machine, armed not only with its 120mm cannon, but also with special ammunition types, making it deadly at any distance. Few Tier 9 vehicles can match its sheer ferocity on the battlefield.

M1134

The M1134 is an advanced missile Tank Destroyer based on the Stryker chassis, used in the U.S. Army Stryker Brigade Combat Teams to enhance the unit’s firepower against enemy armor. While only lightly protected, its main strength light in the advanced model of the BGM-71 TOW missile launcher, allowing it to knock out practically every armored target it encounters on the battlefield.

In Armored Warfare, the M1134 is a Tier 8 Tank Destroyer. Its main and only weapon is the dual-shot missile launcher. As such, the vehicle is mostly defenseless at close ranges, but can take out any enemy it encounters at long distances thanks to its powerful guided missiles. Mastering it requires patient gameplay and clever use of cover, making it more suitable for experienced players.

We hope that you will enjoy the offer and, as always:

The December of 2020 will bring another Battle Path. This time, the general theme (as the entire new season itself) will be the post-apocalyptic world that came from the super-volcano explosion at the end of the Spirithaven Special Operation. This will not only reflect on the upcoming skins and the general artistic feel of the Battle Path, but also on the vehicles themselves – because let’s face it, what kind of machine would you want to find yourselves in during an apocalypse? A rugged one, of course – and few military vehicles are as rugged as those coming from Russia.

That is why the vehicle pool of the next Battle Path will be Russian and today we are beginning to unveil its composition, starting with a rather interesting vehicle called Kurganets-25.

A little history first, as usual.

Kurganets-25 is intended as a cutting edge future replacement to the old BMP series in Russian service. Its name comes from two sources, which its place of origin (Kurgan, a city in the Ural Mountains) and its weight of 25 tons. While not as chunky and expensive as the T-15 Armata super-heavy IFV, it’s designed to finally offer the 21st century protection levels the Russian military has been demanding for a long time. It was deemed that the developing company (Kurganmashzavod) had plenty of experience to make such a vehicle work since it’s also producing upgraded BMP-3 IFVs for the Russian military.

Unlike various previous attempts at well-protected IFVs such as the Dragun, the Kurganets is an entirely new design. It originally came in to configurations – a lightly armed APC for 8 troops and an IFV for 6-7 troops. Other configurations (such as a 122mm self-propelled gun, a 125mm tank destroyer or a 57mm anti-aircraft version) were also proposed, but nothing really came of it.

Both versions are well-protected by an optional ERA kit and the IFV was also presented as being able to carry a scaled-down version of Armata’s Afganit hard-kill APS. This system was mentioned in 2017 to be able to intercept kinetic shells but this ability is still currently not confirmed. Despite its low weight, its hull design was optimized to provide extra protection against ISDs and mines, something the older BMPs lacked completely (any BMP is one of the most vulnerable IFVs still in service when it comes to this kind of threat). At the same time, the vehicle is amphibious since it was also supposed to replace the Russian Marines’ BMP-3F.

The vehicle is powered by a 12.4 liter 6-cylinder 750hp YaMZ-780 engine mounted in the front, further increasing its crew’s protection. It has a maximum speed of some 80 km/h. The maximum swimming speed is estimated at 10 km/h. The engine was not the first choice but the actual intended engine for the platform by ChTZ never materialized.

It has a crew of three men – driver, commander and a gunner, the latter two operating a remotely-controlled Bumerang-BM turret, armed with a 30mm autocannon and Kornet guided missiles. It’s worth noting that some sources name even the 30mm Kurganets turret “Epokha” (or “Epokh” in some older articles). For all intents and purposes, they are the same weapon system.

The APC version is armed only with a small remote-controlled machinegun turret. The turret is completely isolated from the troop compartment so that, unlike in the older BMPs, a catastrophic ammo explosion does not kill the carried soldiers.

The development of this platform started in the early 2010s and a prototype (first delivered in 2013 or so) was unveiled along with the Armata vehicles during the famous 2015 Victory Day military parade. Initial reports claimed that the Kurganets would be module compatible with the Armata platform to reduce the costs of both, but this turned out not to be the case.

The original plan was to deliver roughly 100 trial vehicles by 2016, finish the state trials by 2017 and to start mass-producing the vehicle for Russian use by 2020. However, the program would turn out to be very expensive for Russia – too expensive.

Kurganets’ production was getting delayed as such:
  • To 2019 in 2016
  • To 2020 in 2017
  • To 2021 in 2018 with the state trials happening between 2019 and 2021
Kurganmash’s situation was further complicated by the demands to simultaneously upgrade the existing fleet of BMP-1s and BMP-2s and, internally, the company believed in 2018 that its facilities would not be fully re-tooled to Kurganets production before 2030.

In the early 2020, it was unveiled that the ChTZ engine development for the Kurganets and Armata platform was effectively cancelled due to the problems with the 12TV373Ch “Chaika” engine that turned out to be worse than the A-85-3A engine it was supposed to replace. This left the Kurganets project in a major pickle since further delays would be inevitable and the original YaMZ-780 engine would be needed after all.

In September 2020 it was finally decided to effectively shelf the whole program and to upgrade the existing fleet of old BMP-2 IFVs with a new combat module called Berezhok to the BMP-2M standard along with further acquisitions of modernized BMP-3s.

Considering the shift of attention to a newly developed (and considerably cheaper) upgrade of the BMP-3 called BMP-3M Manul, the lack of production facilities and the general cost of the program, the fate of Kurganets-25 seems to be all but sealed.

A few more words about the in-game version of the Epokha turret (sometimes transcribed Epocha or Epoch). This turret apparently evolved from the Bumerang-BM combat module (or is another name for it since plenty of sources use them interchangeably).

It is armed with four weapon systems – a short 57mm autocannon against soft targets, a Kornet ATGM launcher, a 7.62mm machinegun and a brand-new weapon system called Bulat, featuring small but nevertheless guided missiles.

The 57mm LShO-57 autocannon isn’t really an autocannon per se; it’s more of a grenade launcher. Its designation (APGB – automatic gun with grenade-launcher ballistics) confirms as much. Despite this fact, it can fire 3UBM21 APDS rounds along with the 3OF91 HE rounds. Their actual parameters are not known. The vehicle carries 72 such rounds. The interesting part here is the ballistic curve of these shells combined with their relatively low velocity.

The Kornet ATGMs are fairly well-known. What is new, however, is the 9M134 Bulat ATGM. Its caliber is not known, it is estimated to be between 60mm and 80mm. The turret carries 12 such missiles. The actual purpose of this system is engaging softer targets at longer ranges. The “autocannon” has its ballistic properties somewhere between an actual gun and a grenade launcher, making engaging moving targets at medium-to-long distances difficult. Bulat ATGMs are intended to remedy that.

In Armored Warfare, Kurganets-25 will be a Tier 9 Premium Tank Destroyer. Now, considering this is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle in real life, you might be asking at this point why we chose to introduce it as a TD. The answer is that given the presence of many unique weapon systems on this vehicle, we decided to give it a rather unique battlefield role, akin to the QN-506. Nevertheless, it will be possible to deploy Mechanized Infantry.

In short, this vehicle will play sort of like a Terminator, only with less armor but more (or, rather, more diverse) firepower.

But before we get into any details, the usual disclaimer:

The numbers below are very preliminary as the vehicle has not been properly tested. They are sure to change and should only be discussed as an indicator of how we’d like to set the vehicle up. With that being said:

Protection-wise, it will of course still be something of a heavy IFV and that usually means steel armor that can’t take a lot of damage. Fortunately, Kurganets will have two things going for it:
  • Unmanned turret
  • Afganit APS
That’s right; this TD will be protected by roughly the same system as everyone’s favorite, T-15, including the option to activate the Supercharged hard-kill APS ability. Despite the lack of actual armor (which will be roughly comparable to BMP-3M), Kurganets will offer good survivability at long ranges. Given its class, it’s obviously not intended for short-range combat and if it finds itself in one, either it’s not being used correctly or the game is already in its last seconds.

Its mobility will correspond to what is written above – as a Tank Destroyer, the vehicle will not be extremely agile or fast with its maximum speed being 70 km/h. Compared to some other TDs, it will still be quite mobile, but not as much as an AFV.

Where it will really shine though will be its firepower, which will consist of three weapon systems:
  • 57mm short autocannon with mediocre rate of fire but solid damage and penetration (for an autocannon, that is), intended as a support weapon against light targets or MBT rear armor (like T-15’s 30mm gun)
  • Bulat ATGMs with small but potent thermobaric warheads and with limited agility but high flight velocity, intended as another support weapon (much like QN-506’s rockets)
  • Kornet ATGMs with the same performance as those of BMPT Mod.2000 (intended as the vehicle’s main weapon for long-range combat)
The turret will also feature average gun depression and excellent elevation (-5/+60 degrees). Last but not least, the vehicle will have average camouflage factor and class-appropriate viewrange (but will excel in neither).

All things considered, the Kurganets TD will be an excellent fire support platform the way it was intended in real life. Thanks to its diverse firepower, it’ll be able to deal some damage at most ranges, even though it is intended to fight at longer ones. Despite some similar characteristics with its heavier T-15 counterpart, it won’t be able to fill the same role by protecting the team with an MBT-like armor, but will instead have to stay behind a bit to do what it does best. Mechanized Infantry will, of course, only add to its value to the team and with the recently introduced ability to direct infantry fire, we are looking at a very potent damage dealer that will surely come in handy in any group.

We hope that you will enjoy this vehicle and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!
