Armored Warfare - Silentstalker
Commanders!

In our last article, we discussed Special Operations vehicles and how to choose your vehicles, especially for the Hardcore mode. Today, we’ll take a quick look at how the AI works and what to do in battle so that your team doesn’t hate you.

Aggro and You

The first and the most important thing to understand in Armored Warfare PvE is the concept of aggro. This all will be very familiar to MMORPG veterans but in a tank game, it’s worth explaining.

Aggro is, simply put, a measure of how much aggressive an AI opponent is towards you and your team mates. Hostile actions against an AI target (such as shooting or ramming) will increase your aggro – it will make the enemy more likely to attack you.

By default, AI opponents attack you and your team in the following order of importance:
  • Whoever has the most aggro
  • Whoever is the heaviest and closest
It works like this – whenever an AI spots you and your team, it will automatically attack whoever is the closest with the affinity towards whoever is the heaviest. In the other words, AI tends to naturally prefer targeting your team’s MBTs, which makes it easier for them to attract AI attention (“tanking” described in the last article) while the rest of your team deals damage to them.

This is, of course, somewhat situational as the AW maps are quite diverse. Keep in mind that the AI is, for all intents and purposes, restricted by the same spotting mechanics you are, including the differences between various AI vehicles (AI scouts have longer spotting range than AI MBTs and so on).

It is therefore extremely important to understand the positions of your team mates as well as the AI tanks because, for example, even if your team’s MBT is in front of you, it can remain unspotted by the AI because there is an obstacle between him and the AI. As a result, the AI only “sees” you and will attack you instead of that MBT. All this can be summed up with:

Let your team’s MBT go first and stay behind it!

Naturally, if you are the team’s MBT, don’t stay on one spot and “snipe” from behind the bushes unless you are one of those specialized MBTs that are more damage dealers than actual protectors. That’s just bad manners and, more importantly, it drastically lowers your team’s chances of success.

Greed Isn’t Good

And now we finally get to the whole aggro business. Let’s suppose you are a damage dealer and you do everything right – the MBT goes first, it encounters the AI opponents, they target it and it’s sitting there, hull in cover, happily bouncing incoming shells with its thick turret, occasionally firing back. This makes the AI opponents angry – such insolence! In other words, the MBT generates aggro, making the AI vehicles focus on it.

Now’s your chance to unleash hell – target the vehicles busy with attempting to damage your team’s MBT and destroy them while they’re focused elsewhere. But, as everything in life, it’s not that simple. Enter the concept of overaggro.

What that means is that you simply do enough damage to make the enemy focus on you instead of its previous target. Unlike in MMORPG group modes such as dungeon instances, in Armored Warfare, overaggroing is not fatal – every vehicle can take a shot or two. Doing this too often, however, is not advised – attracting the attention of a couple of AI T-15s in an AFV is an unpleasant (if short) experience.

Overaggroing can be solved by retreating beyond the AI vehicle’s line of sight, putting an obstacle between it and you or by deploying smoke – AI vehicles that can’t see you typically lose interest and start focusing on a more immediate threat.

To sum it up:
  • Pay attention to your MBT and target the enemies it does, help in taking them down
  • Engage only those targets where you are sure you can survive their attention without too many negative consequences
  • Don’t be greedy with damage, you can’t deal more damage if you are dead
  • If overaggroing, get out of the AI’s line of sight
Target priority should be given to vehicles that can take your lighter team mates out if unchecked. Those are typically light vehicles with a lot of firepower (Light Tanks, AFVs) and especially missile launching enemies (the most notorious being Swingfires, Sabres, various Terminators and T-15), followed by everything else.

In the final part of this series, we’ll take a look at the Black Sea Incursion Special Operations missions and achievements as well as at some more advanced tactics.

See you there!
Armored Warfare - Silentstalker
Commanders!

Welcome to the newest Q&A Session where developers are answering questions posed by players.

On the EU server, we have a situation where we feel that not all maps are included in daily rotation. Can you look into it?

This is not the case – as you can see in player-made tracking threads, the missions that are active are available daily and the rotation is not limited. However, it is worth noting that not all missions are available for all difficulty levels (this is intended) and some missions are intentionally disabled pending an overhaul. In the next major update, we’ll be returning four of those to the game – Harbinger, Stormy Winter, Starry Night and Ghost Hunter.

The impression of a limited map pool is sometimes caused by situations where players encounter the same map five or six times in a two-hour gaming session, for example. This is unfortunately unavoidable as such a situation will statistically happen for at least some players every now and then.

Some buildings on several maps have wrong hitboxes – you can shoot through their walls and so on. Will you be fixing that issue?

Please report any such cases so that we may address them.

Some players claimed that the Object 640 Black Eagle MBT had a 75 percent Credit income bonus instead of the usual 50 percent one and that this bonus was removed. Is this true?

No. In fact, the vehicle has an additional 25 percent bonus on top of the original 50 percent one. Since these bonuses multiply one another, the resulting bonus is 87.5 percent compared to the standard 50 percent.

In the recent article about the future of Armored Warfare, you’ve disclosed some upcoming skin system screenshots of a Leopard with saw blades attached to it. Does this mean we’ll be able to attach such saws to every vehicle in the game as a part of the upcoming customization improvements?

Not all of them, but we are definitely planning to introduce more customization options (as a part of the upcoming skin system) that will include the possibility to add items to your tank, including various junk.

It seems there is a situation where Commander Cortez deals lower maximum damage in Special Operations than in standard PvE. Is that intended?

It is not. Might be a bug, we’ll look into it.

Will you optimize the Global Operations mode more in order to improve FPS?

We are doing that frequently – in fact, we are currently in the middle of an optimization round. It’s not always about the map itself, some of the issues are caused by the User Interface for example. Update 0.26 will feature some of the planned optimization improvements.

Yeah, that’s all well and good, but it feels the game was better optimized years ago. How come, since you’re “improving constantly” Give us specific examples!

Statistics don’t support your statement – in fact, the game’s really optimized better and better. But okay, let’s talk specific examples. One of the issues that we are facing is the automatic settings detector. It doesn’t work really well at the moment – simply put, it sets the settings in an unsuitable fashion for some PCs. For some advanced PCs, it sets the setting too low so that the game doesn’t look good. For some older PCs, it sets them too high so that the game performs poorly. We’re improving that mechanism in the next update and we are also working on a completely new one. This will help players who don’t set their settings manually to improve their game’s performance and looks.

Let’s talk about the current PvP and GLOPS situation. As you know, both modes have severe population issues. Why don’t you buff their Credit and Experience income so that more players play them?

This is a rather complex question that cannot be solved by one flip of a switch. If we oversimplify a bit, adding rewards to any mode does not make it popular enough, the way we’d like it to be.

Why don’t you make it so that once you die in battle, you can immediately use the same vehicle to enter another one?

Because every vehicle doesn’t represent a unit but an individual machine in your arsenal. And as you know, you can’t be on two places at once, even if you’re a tough merc commander.

Will you add Special Medals to PvE?

No. For excellent PvE performance, there are achievements, often with unique rewards such as decals and camouflages.

Can you introduce a special “duel” map where we’d be able to settle scores and grievances within the game with one opponent?

That’s what Custom Matches are for.

Will you add an option where, on the Proving Grounds, we get to choose what enemy tanks spawn during our session so that we can look for their weak spots?

That’s why we are introducing the Armor Inspector – it will help a lot in such a situation.

Are you planning to look into the spotting system? We feel it could use some improvements – for example, some smaller vehicles can be detected only at very close range when hiding behind a bush, MBTs can disappear even in an open field and so on.

Generally speaking, the mechanism is working as it should – firing adds a penalty to the vehicle’s camouflage rating which is why a tank can appear at a certain distance when it fires. Bushes also add camouflage to the vehicles hiding behind them, allowing them to stay hidden.

With that being said, it’s not like we are not investigating the system. Not so long ago, we made some changes in order to reduce the amount of situations where players can fire with impunity while staying hidden behind some bushes and the changes worked as intended according to our statistics. However, it’s also worth noting that this mechanism cannot be just removed – otherwise lighter vehicles would be helpless against MBTs. Plus, camouflage with branches and bushes is still a thing in real life – not everyone’s running around with a thermal imager.

We are carefully monitoring the spotting system situation and are making adjustments where needed in order to make bushes and stealth useful, but not overpowered. And, as was mentioned above, the recent changes helped a lot.

Is the game dynamic enough? Some vehicles like the MBTs feel really slow, might as well be driving a WW2 tank.

We agree, which is why we are working right now on seriously improving the dynamic feel of the game. We are also working on a deeper, more global rebalance of our vehicles but that’s a long and arduous process and we don’t have any specific time frame to share with you just yet.

Let us return to the customization system for a while. Back in 2016, there was a Q&A where you guys said that decals would be resizable and we would be able to put them anywhere on our tanks. In the early 2017, you also mentioned the ability for players to customize their camouflages and basically do what they want with their paintjobs. What happened to those plans?

Yeah, that’s almost two years back. Unfortunately, we had to sit down and review our plans and the whole decal thing was shelved for the foreseeable future. Right now, we are focusing on the abovementioned skin system and one more visual customization feature. After that, we might return to the decal mechanism.

Can you add the option to remove the special camouflage from various reskinned vehicles?

This doesn’t look like something many players would use. We’ll likely not implement that.

Can you make it so that retrofits aren’t tied to a specific vehicle and can be switched between vehicles? At least between reskins and the original.

We are considering some improvements to the Retrofit system but it’s too early to mention any deadlines. But, as for the reskin example in your question, let’s just say this issue will be resolved with the introduction of the skin system.

Many players use different sets of retrofits, consumables and ammo for each mode of the game. Can you introduce a system where players can select a “profile” (different setup) for each mode of the game?

Even though the idea is interesting, we haven’t considered adding such profiles yet.

Many vehicles have similar modules – the same APS for example. Why don’t you make it so that players only have to unlock the same module once and the modules are shared between vehicles?

We are not planning to make that change.

What about the vehicles that are simply terrible, like the ZBL-08? It just sucks. Are you planning to buff it along with the other notorious underperformers?

Yes, we are regularly buffing underperforming vehicles in our updates. But as for the ZBL-08 specifically, we don’t have any specific deadline to share yet.

Since the Black Sea Incursion takes place in Georgia, are planning to implement some Georgian armored vehicles?

No.

In the past, you introduced several vehicles with unguided rockets, such as the MT-LB S8. Are you considering making a full branch out of such vehicles?

While we are considering adding more vehicles with unguided rockets, we are currently not discussing a full branch.

Will you allow players to choose how much ammunition a vehicle carries more freely? For example, if a vehicle has both a cannon and an ATGM launcher, it would be nice to be able to load more missiles at the expense of cannon rounds carried even beyond the standard limit.

That is an interesting idea. At the moment, we aren’t planning that, but in the future, it’s quite possible we’ll add this feature – but first, we need to take a closer look at how it would affect vehicle balance. One negative thing about this idea is that it’s not very realistic. In real life, space for different types of ammunition is not freely interchangeable. A vehicle carrying guided missiles and cannon rounds both can have the missile tubes attached to the sides of the vehicle while the ammunition lies in a storage container underneath them. You can’t just switch them without modifying the vehicle layout. That would not work. Either way, we’ll take a look at it.

In the past, you mentioned that there would be special vehicles for battalion activities. But, the thing is, I don’t want to enter a battalion – I am a solo player. What am I to do to get my hands on these vehicles?

You can always create a one-man battalion for yourself. Sure, the progress will be slower than if you play with others, but you can do that.

Can you add a feature where a commander that I don’t have would be available for a test run?

We’re not considering that at the moment. Maybe in the future.

Will you allow us to rent Premium vehicles without using Gold, for example for a month – for Credits, Reputation or a combination of both?

No – that would seriously damage the game’s economy. Besides, we are, from time to time, allowing you to receive Premium vehicles as a part of our events with the most recent one being Flashpoint One. We are preparing more events for the future. Follow the portal to make sure you don’t miss out on anything.

That’s it for today! We’ll see you on the battlefield!

This week’s MyLoot vehicle is the French AMX 10 RCR Tier 8 Premium Tank Destroyer.

The AMX 10 RCR is the updated variant of the French AMX 10 RC fire support vehicle by GIAT, originally developed in the early 1980s. This light and nimble wheeled 6x6 AFV was armed with a 105mm gun, allowing it to knock out even armored targets at considerable distances. Over 200 of these aging vehicles were upgraded by Nexter in 2010 with improved armor and electronics, enabling them to fulfill modern battlefield tasks until their eventual replacement by the Jaguar. You can learn more about its history in our dedicated article!

In Armored Warfare, the AMX 10 RCR is a Tier 8 wheeled Premium Tank Destroyer. It’s incredibly agile with its wheeled chassis allowing it to outrun pretty much any enemy on the battlefield save for the fastest AFVs. Its gun accuracy is also top notch, making this vehicle perfect for sniper-style gameplay as its thin armor can’t protect it against enemy shells at close distances.

Apart from the permanent standalone offers (including for Gold) that are available with 15% discount for the duration of this offer, the following special bundles are also available between August 28 to August 30, 2018:

In Update 0.23, we’ve introduced the Special Medal mechanic, rewarding players for excellent performance in Random Battles with major Credit and Experience bonuses.

In the next major update, we will be introducing the same mechanic to the Global Operations mode. The following medals will be available:
  • Steel Sword - medal awarded to a tank operator who has destroyed from 15 to 19 enemy venhicles in one match. AI vehicles do not count
  • Bronze Sword - medal awarded to a tank operator who has destroyed at least 20 enemy vehicles in one match. AI vehicles do not count
  • Steel Wings - medal awarded to all tank operators in a team if they have won without losing any more than 100 points. Can only be earned if the enemy team had at least 10 players
  • Big Star - medal awarded to a tank operator who has destroyed an enemy vehicle with the help of a wildcard and earned victory for their team. AI vehicles do not count
  • Infiltrator - medal awarded to a tank operato who has taken at least 50% of points from the enemy by capturing a base. The capture must be victorious

New Commanders

Two new progression commanders will also be available via the new vehicles that will be introduced in Update 0.26 – Rachel Kramer and Gia Tsiklauri. Rachel will be a newbie-friendly MBT commander while Gia will be suitable for advanced players. You can read more about them in an article about Sol Schreiber.

Additionally, we are introducing two Premium commanders described here.

Armor Viewer

Armor Viewer is a special Garage option that allows players to inspect the armor of each playable vehicle in the game, including its thickness and composition. Additionally, it allows players to determine whether that vehicle can be penetrated by a shell of their choosing and from what angle.

You can read more about it in a dedicated article.

PvP map Salzburg

We are introducing a new PvP map that is based on the design of the Austrian city of Salzburg, famous for its castle and the medieval salt trade that took place on the river the castle overlooks. The map offers a number of tactical choices and consists of both rolling hill countryside and of the city’s narrow streets. Whether you choose to advance through the open fields to the south of the map or through the urban area, be aware of your surroundings and make the river run salty with the tears of your opponents!

You can read more about it in a dedicated article.

New Special Operations Mission

The conclusion of the Black Sea Incursion story arc awaits you as the architect of Magnus Holter’s downfall is finally unveiled – or is he? Join Magnus Holter in his quest for vengeance and discover the truth about the events that transpired during the Caribbean Crisis arc.

We hope that you will enjoy the second part of the “Black Sea Incursion” season and will see you on the battlefield!
Armored Warfare - Silentstalker
Commanders!

In connection with the Ukrainian Independence Day, we are happy to introduce two Ukrainian vehicles to myLoot:
  • MT-LB S8 Tier 6 Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle
  • T-64AV Hunter Tier 5 Premium Main Battle Tank

Celebrating Ukrainian Independence

To celebrate the Ukrainian Independence Day, the following missions will be active between August 24 and September 3, 2018:
  • Deal 25.000 points of damage to receive 3 Gold Intel Boost 12-hour tokens
  • Win 1 battle in any mode to receive the Flag of Ukraine decal
  • Earn 50.000 points of Experience in any mode to receive 5 Spare Parts consumables
Apart from the standalone offers that are available with 15% discount for the duration of this offer, the following special bundles are also available between August 24 to September 3, 2018:

MT-LB S8

The MT-LB S8 (also called Strela-10 RSZO) was unveiled only recently as the means for Ukraine to combine two items they did not need by themselves in order to use them effectively during the Civil War. The first one, not quite useful to the Ukrainians by itself, is the Strela-10 self-propelled SAM – its deployment is quite limited due to the fact that the separatist forces do not have any air force. The second item is an aircraft or helicopter rocket pod that is used to fire 80mm S-8 unguided rockets. Together, they form an ad-hoc rocket launcher. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the MT-LB S8 is a unique Tier 6 Armored Fighting Vehicle. What makes it stand out? Its armament, of course. This AFV does not have a lot of armor, nor is it incredibly fast, but it can fire its two full rocket pods (each has 20 rockets) within 30 seconds or less. The rockets have HEAT-MP projectiles and are absolutely deadly against practically any target, but especially against those without composite armor. On the downside, the rockets are unguided and quite inaccurate. This vehicle is not for the faint of heart!

Aside from the standalone offer, it is available in the following bundles:

Improved Bundle with 32% discount, containing:
  • MT-LB S8 Tier 6 Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle
  • 5 Gold Loot Crates
  • 10 Gold Battlefield Glory 12-hour Boost Tokens
  • 15 Gold Crew Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Commander Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Reputation Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Credits Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Experience Insignia tokens
  • 2.000 Gold
Prime Bundle with 52% discount, containing:
  • MT-LB S8 Tier 6 Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle
  • 15 Platinum Loot Crates
  • 15 Platinum Battlefield Glory 12-hour Boost Tokens
  • 50 Gold Crew Insignia tokens
  • 50 Gold Commander Insignia tokens
  • 50 Gold Reputation Insignia tokens
  • 50 Gold Credits Insignia tokens
  • 50 Gold Experience Insignia tokens
  • 5.000 Gold

T-64AV Hunter

The T-64AV is a special variant of a T-64A that was retrofitted with the Soviet Kontakt-1ERA kit. A certain amount of the older T-64As was thus modified in the 1980s, producing a cost-effective improvement to the tank’s combat value.

In Armored Warfare, the T-64AV is another typical Russian style Main Battle Tank, featuring such elements as rather effective ERA, a low silhouette and a 125mm gun. It’s powerful at close ranges and thus suitable for aggressive play style. The T-64AV Hunter is available with unique yellow camouflage. Aside from the standalone offer, it is available in the following bundles:

Improved Bundle with 33% discount, containing:
  • T-64AV Hunter Tier 5 Premium Main Battle Tank
  • 5 Gold Loot Crates
  • 5 Gold Battlefield Glory 12-hour Boost Tokens
  • 15 Gold Crew Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Commander Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Reputation Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Credits Insignia tokens
  • 15 Gold Experience Insignia tokens
  • 1.500 Gold
Prime Bundle with 45% discount, containing:
  • T-64AV Hunter Tier 5 Premium Main Battle Tank
  • 10 Platinum Loot Crates
  • 10 Platinum Battlefield Glory 12-hour Boost Tokens
  • 35 Gold Crew Insignia tokens
  • 35 Gold Commander Insignia tokens
  • 35 Gold Reputation Insignia tokens
  • 35 Gold Credits Insignia tokens
  • 35 Gold Experience Insignia tokens
  • 3.000 Gold

Please note:
  • This offer starts on August 24, 16:00 CEST (7 AM PDT)
  • This offer ends on September 3, 16:00 CEST (7 AM PDT)
  • If you already owned a bundle vehicle, you will instead receive its Compensation Value in Gold instead
We hope that you will enjoy this offer and will see you on the battlefield!
Armored Warfare - Silentstalker
Commanders!

This week, we have some very special offers for you to celebrate My.com’s presence at the gamescom 2018 games expo. We’ve been waiting to introduce you to these beauties for quite some time and now’s the right time to do so.

The crown jewel of the offer is the Type 96B Red Dragon Tier 8 Premium Main Battle Tank with its unique and gorgeous dragon-themed paintjob that is now available on MyLoot as fell as for Gold in our Web Shop.

The Type 96B MBT, as its name suggests, is an evolution of the Type 96A, featuring such elements as an upgraded fire control system and a much more powerful engine, resulting in considerably better mobility and speed. Unlike the Type 96A, however, the Type 96B is a prototype, designed for the Chinese military team to use during the annual Tank Biathlon event in Russia. In 2017, the Chinese team won the second place, being defeated only by Russia. You can learn more about its history in our dedicated article!

In Armored Warfare, the Type 96B is a Tier 8 Premium Main Battle Tank. Gameplay-wise, it’s very agile and fast for its class and uses advanced ammunition, making it highly suitable for players who prefer mobility over armor protection, even though it can take a lot of punishment as well.

Joining him on MyLoot are:
  • Challenger 1 Fionn Tier 7 Premium Main Battle Tank
  • WZ-1224 Trash Panda Tier 6 Premium Main Battle Tank
Apart from the standalone offers, all three vehicles are available in larger bundles with major discounts between August 21 and August 28, 2018.

Check out the MyLoot pages to find out more!

But that’s not all.

We know you’ve been itching to spend your myCoins on something really cool, which is why we’ve prepared for you two brand new myLoot chests that are also available for limited time only (until September 3, 2018).

Each of these chests contains, amongst other things, a previously unavailable Premium Light Tanks:
  • Begleitpanzer 57 Toy Tier 5 Premium Light Tank
  • VT-5 Dragon Tier 9 Premium Light Tank
The Begleitpanzer 57 Toy is based on one of the lesser known German attempts from the late 1970s to create an infantry fire support vehicle on the German Marder IFV chassis. It was a purely commercial project, intended for export. Unfortunately, while it had potential, it did not manage to attract any customers. A single prototype was built in 1977 and you can read more about it in a dedicated article.

Its rather unique combination of a 57mm automatic cannon and a TOW missile launcher allows it to take out any target it encounters at any distance, although medium ranges is where it performs the best. This version sports a rather colorful paintjob as well as a set of balloons that the enemies will do their utmost to pop. It’s just the perfect thing to awake your inner child – just go out there and play!

The VT-5 Dragon is a special version of the VT-5 but, unlike its Legendary Reinforcements counterpart, it features a beautiful red and gold paint scheme rivaling that of the Red Dragon. The vehicle itself is a modern Chinese Light Tank that was developed specifically with export in mind. There are many reasons why a country without its own tank development should opt to purchase a Light Tank instead of a full-scale Main Battle Tank. It’s equally as fast if not faster with equal firepower but, what is most important, it is affordable. The VT-5 excels in all these categories. While its armor cannot match that of an MBT, it can protect its crew against most infantry threats thanks to its ERA and cage armor sets. It also has a powerful 105mm gun capable of firing guided missiles, it is packed with advanced electronics and is supremely agile thanks to its 1000hp diesel engine. Simply put, wraps cutting edge technologies up into an affordable bundle. You can learn more about it in a dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the VT-5 is a very powerful Tier 9 Premium Light Tank. Fast and agile, it features solid levels of protection (the configuration in the game is the one featuring the ERA kit as well as the turret cage armor) and a good rate of fire. Additionally, its gun is capable of firing guided missiles. It’s an ideal machine for players who value speed and agility, as it offers plenty of both. The VT-5 is capable of dancing around its opponents on the battlefield, outperforming even some AFVs in mobility.

Both these vehicles are available via MyLoot Chests that, in turn, are available for myCoins you receive as a free bonus for every myLoot purchase. You can read more myCoins in our dedicated article.
