Hello everyone!

Phase 1 of the technical Beta starts today! This news will give you the steps to follow so you can participate to the P1 T-Beta, we also added a few more content to the previously announced content to make it even nicer.

How to install the Beta

You are now able to access the T-Beta P1 if you follow these steps:

1. Go to your Library and right click on Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem to choose the “Properties” menu.

2. Choose the Beta tab on your menu, and select the Beta branch.

3. There is no code, just close the window. The P1 T-Beta will then automatically download!

If the BETAS submenu doesn’t appear, you may need to restart Steam first!

How to play with your friends

In Tech Beta 1, Matchmaking is not yet integrated so you will have to play with your friends using direct invitation.
Our friend list is independent from Steam’s friend list. We’ve integrated a tag system that will provide you with a Wolcen tag automatically when you log in the game.

You need to add your friends to be able to create a party and join a game together. Click on “Add friends” and provide your friend’s Wolcen tag.

The field is case sensitive so make sure you don’t add a capital letter if there isn’t one :)

Once your friends are added in your friend list, you can invite them in your group and join a game together by pressing “Play” when the group is ready. You can have a maximum of 4 players in the same group.

Finally, we’re still working on a chat integration, so you will not be able to communicate with your friends in game.

Important known issue:

Unfortunately, some issues slipped into the technical beta 1 build. You can find a list of the known issues here: [link incoming]

One of those issues will cause your game creation to fail from time to time, displaying the following error “Your game couldn't be created, please try again later.”. However, you should be able to press the “Play” button again and ask for another game creation until it succeeds and you join the game.

Skills

All skills will be available for your character when you enter the game, you just have to go in your skill tree to find them, and drag and drop them on your action bar.

We wanted to add more diversity for the bowmen as well. Therefore, we decided to add another skill for this phase to allow you to enjoy a bit more the bow gameplay.

Phantom Blades(previously Bladeslinger) has been totally revamped.

You already had the opportunity to see it on the Beta gameplay preview, here is what it looks like with some AST customization!

Uniques

We also added a few uniques, one per archetype, so you will have cool items to crush your foes even more efficiently.

Gems

9 gem types will be available for this version and got a revamp. They will change in the future to allow you different elemental combinations.

Enjoy!

This phase 1 will be very important to us since it’s the first time that we implement Multiplayer for Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. Your feedback will allow us to fix major issues and prepare for phase 2. During this phase, we plan to implement more weapons, skills, and enemies, so you can have a new experience while you’re testing the game.
Pistols, daggers, and shields will be back!

We will tell you more in the upcoming weeks about this phase and its content.

Have fun and thank you for your patience!

Hello everyone,

I am Daniel, CEO of Wolcen Studio – Some of you may already know that I have a very nice french accent from our Kickstarter video few years ago…

Time has passed since our crowdfunding campaign, and unlike my accent, Wolcen has changed drastically.

The First Tech Beta - that we will launch in a few days now - will be a first taste of the amazing work our team has done.
For the past seven months, our team doubled in size – we are more than 30 internally - and developed a new state of mind: we want to create something big. We are building Wolcen as a world, not just a single game. We want our game universe and art direction to be as great as possible to allow this universe to live and evolve in the next 10 years.

Also, we want Wolcen to be a unique game compared to others of the same genre. We will not be a mixture of several games. We will be Wolcen, an amazing game that brings a lot of new elements on the table for Hack’n’Slash players. In order to do that, we will provide you unique gameplay mechanics, play style, game modes and more.
We have a long-term vision for our game to evolve and become one amongst the giants.

For that reason, and because of the new talented and experienced member who joined us recently, we decided to restart the game from scratch, redesign what was wrong in Wolcen and improve what was already good. We added new features to make our game unique. Also, we wanted to add multiplayer.
To achieve this, we asked you to wait for 6 long months, so we can provide you a multiplayer build.

We are almost there.

It is a bit sad for me to tell you today that we will need few more days before we can provide you the Tech Beta 1, but I believe it is better than letting you play to the current build.
We faced unexpected issues and we want them to be fixed before release, so your game experience could be the best possible for this version. It will be a small delay and it is for the best.

Tech Beta is coming soon! Stay tuned, it is just a matter of days now!

Daniel Dolui,
Wolcen Studio CEO

Hello everyone!

Before we give you the content planned for the first phase of the technical Beta, we're very proud to share with you the brand new logo for Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem!

Maybe you want to see more?

Alright. We’ve also prepared a short gameplay video for you, so you can have a glimpse of the new Beta gameplay, some new skills, revamped skills, and improved modifiers, before we develop the content you will be able to experiment :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6NZ_ed_Y8Y

T-Beta content

As explained in the last news, the Beta transition will be handled in 2 phases of testing before we release it for everyone. The goal of these tests is to experiment the brand new content we prepared for you and ensure that the network and servers are handling it properly.
Once the experience is stable and satisfying, we will release the Beta.

Phase 1 starts in a few days now, on October 11th, and we wanted to inform you regarding the content you’ll be able to test for the first week of this technical Beta.

Weapons and armors

5 weapon types will be available: one-handed swords, bows, mage staff, two-handed hammer. We’re also introducing the off-hand catalyst. The catalyst is a charm that will allow your character to cast spells while using a one-handed weapon.
Dual-wielding will be available with one-handed swords.

On these weapons, you will be able to have 3 types of modifiers, it can be a generated affix, or you can add it through gems, providing you have a socket. Weapon modifiers deal elemental damages, it will impact your weapon combo and have a consequence on the overkill effect, depending on the element you use. For this phase, you will have Fire, Frost, and Poison modifiers.

You will also discover 3 new armors: light, medium and heavy armors for mages, rogues, and warriors, will be available.

Skills

For this phase, the PST will be deactivated. 6 revamped skills will be available, and each will have 4 AST improvements.

Frost Nova (now called Winter’s Grasp) and Frost Meteor (now called Tear of Etheliel) will be available the way you know them. However, Anvil’s Woe, Thunderstrike, Stings of Krearion and Wings of Ishmir are 4 revamped/new skills you will have the opportunity to discover during that phase.

The Active Skill Tree will offer you the possibility to improve these skills with various effects, umbra/rage cost reduced, range improved, more projectiles, damages improved, that’s just a few examples of the improvements you can apply on your skills/spells.

Creatures

Face the new Svriirs, creatures of the Cult of Souls, and a few bandits during that phase.

Hub and dungeons

Nowhere will be used as a Hub for this phase. In there, you will have the possibility to join a randomly generated dungeon.

Other content

We’ve worked on a crash reporter! We wanted a more simple way for you to transfer your crash files to us so we can fix it. If your game crashes, you will see this window, allowing you to send us directly the information we need to work on the issue.

Multiplayer implementation

Since the main goal of this technical Beta is to see how the game reacts on our servers in Multiplayer, you will be able to experience the game with your friends! In the future, we will implement a matchmaking functionality so you can automatically find a group and play with other players, but for this version, you will only be able to add friends in your friend list if you wish to play with other players. This list is dissociated from Steam, so you will have to add your friends manually.

We will tell you how this system works exactly next week with the T-Beta launch news.

Advancement of the game

Most of our teams have now moved on to the Act 2 development. We wanted to share with you this little preview of their actual work in progress!

Final Beta content

We have decided to remove the story from the Beta content(coming after phase 2) to make a pure Gameplay Beta. This will allow us to deploy the content in regular patches as we move towards the release of the game, and drive the Beta tests on a pure gameplay aspect. That way, you will have regular new features to experiment through time.

The Gameplay Beta will allow you to explore all the different environments of the Act I, without being driven by the story. An NPC will be available in Stormfall to allow you to travel through the different maps, and the enemies will be scaled to your level (or the level of the party leader if you're in Multiplayer).

Of course, we will tell you more about the Beta content, as we approach its release date.

On that note

Remaking the entire Act I gave us the opportunity to have new music in the game. Unique Horns Studios, our composers provided us with a medley that we would like to share with you. We hope that you will appreciate the new ambiance of this soundtrack!

See you very soon for the launch of the T-Beta Phase 1!

Hello everyone!

We’re approaching the end of September, and it’s time to give you an update about the Beta transition.

These last 6 months, our teams have been working really hard to provide you with a brand new game:
  • All the architecture of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem has been remade from scratch.
  • Environments, characters, items, creatures, animations, FX, design and art direction are all new and shiny.
  • We now have an enhanced code, which means fixing and optimizing will be easier for us, and hotfixes will come faster for you!

It also means that a lot of our old assets are outdated and don’t fit the actual architecture, so there is still work to do to have some features that were present during the Alpha phase.

We plan to deploy the Beta in several patches over time, starting with stress tests that we need, in order to check our servers’ stability and spot the most important issues related to Multiplayer implementation.

We did our best to achieve everything we promised you and release it for September, but the truth is: it’s not all done yet, and we need a little more time to make a clean and polished Beta release for everyone. For that, we’re once again calling for your help.

We came up with a plan to allow you to test the work we’ve already made in a controlled environment at first to ensure a satisfying release for everyone, matching our quality goals, and make you proud of supporting us.

So, how can you help? Simple! You just have to participate with your friends, and break everything 😊

Experimental Beta

The experimental part of the Beta will be in 2 technical phases of one week each. Between these phases, the servers will be closed to focus on bug fixing, then we'll re-open them for the next phase.

Note that you will still be able to play the Alpha during all the testing phases and in-between until the Beta is released for everyone.

Phase 1 starts on October 11 and will last untill October 17, and you will be able to play the Beta if you follow these steps:

1. Open Steam and go to your game library.
2. Right click on Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, and select "Properties"
3. Navigate to the "Beta" tab and select "experimental" from the combo box.
4. Close the properties window.
5. Play!

Once the experimental Beta is installed, you will be able to test the version, break it, stress it, and provide us with your crash files and bug reports on this dedicated forum.

Also, the Trello bug board is now purged and all known issues will be added on it too.

Although we will provide you with the list of available features once we approach the planned phases, we can already tell you now that you will be able to experiment Multiplayer with your friends during this Technical Beta!
The offline mode, however, will be deactivated on the technical Beta, so you won't be able to play Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem's Beta, without an internet access for the moment.

Phase 1 content

For this phase, you will be experiencing the new dungeon generation system and a few skills/weapons in solo and multiplayer. For that first test, we’re mostly interested in making a stress test for our servers to see how it interacts with our code in real conditions of use, and how the new dungeon generation system is fitting in this environment.

You will be able to discover a few revamped skills, a new character model, new animations and FX so you can have a glimpse of the gameplay we’ve worked on for you. The balancing will not be final for this version.

Phase 2 content

We will make several additions for this phases so you can continue testing the new Gameplay in a controlled environment, but we will tell you more about the phase 2 content as we approach the date of its release.

Beta release for everyone

We want to make sure that we can provide you with the best experience possible for Wolcen. We hope these tests will be enough for us to spot the most important issues, fix them to release the Beta for everyone, and finally shut down the Alpha quickly after Phase 2.

Of course, we will keep you updated on our progress, and tell you as soon as possible if we consider that additional time is required for testing. Although we're a much bigger team now, we're still smaller than ideal, and we hope that you can help us with these tests. Depending on your feedback and how many critical issues we have in the Beta, the final release date might be postponed. Like you, we strongly hope that it will not be needed, but we can’t shut this possibility if we want to be realistic and honest.

Beta future updates

We don’t plan to leave you without any updates once the Beta is out.

We will tell you more about the future Beta patches later, but some features will not be in the primary Beta launch and will be added through time, so we can polish them and give you something new to test while we continue working on the other Acts of the game for the Final Release.

We're all eager to have your feedback about the new content you will be experiencing, we've put a lot of heart into it and we're confident that you will appreciate it a lot.

As always, thank you for your support, for your patience, and see you very soon for more news on the first Beta phase!

Hello everyone!

September and our Beta transition are approaching really fast! Today, we would like to share a little more about some changes planned.

Let’s talk about the fail state in Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem!

"Down But Not Out" (DBNO) system

Following your feedback regarding character respawn, we have come up with a system that allows you to respawn at the same spot where your character was defeated, but also keeps character death penalizing in case this happens.

Let’s be a little more specific:

System bases

When a character reaches 0 health, he enters the Down But Not Out state. He’s able to slowly crawl, but cannot perform any other action.
While in DBNO state, the player is ignored by enemies, temporary positive and negative status effects are removed, and he cannot take any damage.

So, how can you recover from that state?

"Revive tokens"

When a player joins the game in single-player mode, he is granted a limited amount of revive tokens, determined by the difficulty chosen.

When reaching the DBNO state, players will have the possibility to use one of their revive tokens to get back on their feet and return to combat. Upon using that token, all nearby enemies are knocked-down, and during a short time of recovery, the character is invulnerable. This protection is removed when the player performs any kind of action or movement.

The number of revive tokens is limited, and when the player runs out of it, the character dies if he reaches 0 health again.

The game will offer the possibility to gain temporary revive tokens by performing different special actions or getting different bonuses.

Revive tokens are only available in single-player mode.

DBNO in Multiplayer

There are no revive tokens in Multiplayer, you rely on your friends and they have to bring you back when your character reaches the DBNO state. During the “resurrection” sequence, both players are locked-in, unless the reviving player cancels it by moving or casting a skill.

Depending on the difficulty settings, the revived character comes back with more or less health, and the sequence can or cannot be interrupted by creatures surrounding the characters.

There will be other variations to this DBNO system in Multiplayer, including high-risk situations that will push cooperation in ways you’ve never experienced in a hack and slash game before. We will have more to share about this in future updates.

Game Over

Game Over occurs when your character dies, or when all the characters of your party are dead. When this happens, you respawn in the last visited town, and all creatures respawn as well.
This gives waypoints an additional value that we appreciate a lot.

In single-player, all your revive tokens are restored when your character dies.

We wanted this system to allow a good balance between players looking for a hardcore gaming experience with punishing death, and a more casual approach of character defeat. It’s also setting a natural difficulty progression and allows players to master the game a bit before getting into real trouble.

This system will be implemented for the Beta, we hope that you will like it, we’re looking forward to your feedback about it!

Know that we have additional features planned for Multiplayer situations, such as being able to spectate a friend, and revive directly on him once every member of the party goes out of combat, which avoids respawning in town and using the teleportation on your friends.
But it might not be available for the Beta, so we will talk about that again later.

That's all for today :) Remember you can see some Beta preview on our Trello Beta Roadmap board, each week a picture is posted, based on your votes, so you can get a glimpse of what's to come. Some lore elements are sometimes added as well for those of you who would like to know more about the Wolcen universe.

Thank you very much for your patience during this big transition, and for your support. We can't wait for you to play the new game we have made with love for you!

Hello everyone!

We would like to provide you with some updates on the Beta. We’re progressing well on all the features planned, and everyone in the studio is working hard to honor the deadline for the Beta transition.

If you wish to see some previews, you can visit the Trello Beta Roadmap and vote for the preview that you would like to see ;) Every Monday, another sneak peek is posted based on your votes.

Presently, our developers are all focused on the creation and implementation of all the new creatures, effects, characters, weapons, armors, animations and environments, and of course Multiplayer, just for you! We’re all really excited about this, and we’re quite confident you will be too.

Now, let’s talk about the rotating camera. As told in the Beta news, the feature was removed because we realized it was barely used and considered confusing. We know you don’t all agree on that point, and that some of you were disappointed by this choice. Although we’re confident you will appreciate the change, we would like to tell you a little more about the other reasons why we made that change and share with you another preview of the Beta game.

When we first started the development of Umbra, we tried many camera configurations. Different focal, distances, angles, and movement... As the development progressed, we started identifying a few small issues, and in the end, we realized that the rotating camera didn’t serve the gameplay like we expected.

Here at Wolcen Studio, we want the quality of gameplay to come first.
When something goes in the way of a good game experience, we seek out solutions to make it better. That’s what we did for the rotating camera.

For the Beta version of the game, we want to improve the camera by streamlining its behaviour, get the ‘perfect’ settings, and freeze the rotation control for players.

One of our main priorities on Wolcen, with quality of action, is visual quality. Passionate artists work hard every day here to deliver a beautiful experience, and having only one camera angle greatly improves our ability to achieve this objective.

In the meantime, level design is clearer for the player, and it should be easier for you to enjoy and follow the flow of the action without getting lost or lose the rhythm of the adventure.

Last but not least, optimization is facilitated, and production time of a given area is reduced, allowing us to do more content of a higher quality.

At the end, this was a great experiment for us. The top down camera has the advantage of giving a great visibility of gameplay, and we really want to make the most out of this possibility.

We hope that this explanation made our choice a little more clear for you. Of course, you will have the opportunity to tell us what you think about these changes during the Beta in September.

See you soon!

Hello everyone!

A little update on our team's status and how you will be able to track the progression of the Beta. The team is advancing well for September’s huge transition, and we want to share a little more information about what is actually going on at the office.

So!

Multiplayer status

Our programmers are currently working on the Multiplayer to implement core features of the game in that mode. It’s a tremendous work to make all the features working in that different configuration, they are sweating a lot and work really hard to provide you that feature for the Beta.

Dear Community, they need all your 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 to go through this!
Don’t hesitate to send me your love for them on Discord or even in comments, I will transmit everything to them when they’re not in programming-focused mode.

Beta Roadmap

The global Roadmap is nice, but it doesn’t give you many details about what’s currently happening for the Beta. Therefore, we’ve decided to open a new Beta Roadmap, more detailed about the Beta content.
Each week, we will add images of the work in progress based on your votes on Trello.

To vote, you have to own a Trello account(free) and vote for what you wish to see.
The section with the highest votes each week will be granted with an image added on the Beta Roadmap.

Be careful, though, spoilers are to be expected, do not visit the Beta Roadmap if you wish to discover the content by yourself when it’s in the game 😊

Owlcen’s adventures

In case you didn’t see it yet, we have a new plush owl friend at the office! Born on the Discord channels, he has found his way to the Wolcen office and visits everyone to track the progress of the Beta. You can follow his adventures on Instagram: join him on a tour of the office and see exclusive work in progress in his pictures! Speaking of...

A little more of our office

Direct link for larger view: https://image.ibb.co/iiCJRJ/Office4.jpg

This is our open space where all the magic takes place. The different departments are mentioned so you can see our configuration. We still have a lot of work to do for the decoration, but it’s in progress, and we have a game to finish ;) As you can see, Owlcen might be hidden, but he monitors everything.

Which brings me to...

Pets

Last but not least, this is also a work in progress, but I thought you might like to take a look at this feature in development, as a conclusion for this news:

Annnd that is all for today.
Thank you, as always, for your support!

Hello everyone!

[French translation]
[German translation]
[Russian translation]

There is a lot to say today. Before introducing to you the huge surprise we made at the end of this news, I would like to share some information.
Let’s start with…

News about the next patch

We want to give you an update on the development of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, and how things will go in the next months.

In January this year, we shared with you the Roadmap for 2018. In that Roadmap, we told you that we will release the true Act I of the game. We would like to clarify what “the true Act I” means:
  • Multiplayer/Coop
  • An entire new storyline
  • Apocalyptic form
  • New creatures
  • New environments
  • New quests and dialogues
  • New NPCs
  • New player characters
  • New animations
  • New armors
But also on a more technical point:
  • Improved quality of assets and textures
  • New shaders and visual effects
  • Whole new particle effects with improved quality
  • Huge optimization pass on everything
  • New gameplay mechanics
Basically, we are improving the quality of everything, so it fits better our ambition, and yours.

Since the entire actual environment, armors, and characters will be modified or improved to allow the final version of the game to be implemented, we’ve decided to focus our attention on the Beta transition and no longer add content to the actual version of Wolcen.

This leads the next patch to be planned for the end of September.

We still plan to check regularly on crashes and game breaking bugs to apply hotfix for the most annoying ones, in order to improve your game comfort on the Alpha. Our Community Manager, Jessica (Calistaen on Discord/Steam), is always here to take care of you.

So, please, keep giving us feedback and bug/crash reports so we can monitor these issues.

In September 2018, we will officially move into version 0.9 of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, meaning: Beta! For this update, all characters and stashes will be wiped, and you will have a whole new game to explore.

We’ve already been working on that content for the last months, in parallel of the patch 0.5.0.5 that we applied at the end of March.

Actually, we’ll do better than that and show you the work we’ve done at the end of this news with a nice cool new video (I told you there was a surprise!).

What other changes are planned for the Beta?

Before preparing to move into Beta, we had to reconsider some implementations planned during the Kickstarter. There were a lot of discussions in the office around these elements, and a lot of feedback gathered to reach a final decision. However, we’re confident that these choices will improve the production flow, the game flow, and the overall quality of the game.

The Open World

Since we hope that Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem is only the first chapter of a long story, it seemed important that the universe is properly introduced. Having an open world ARPG is an interesting challenge and we’re still enthusiastic about having one for Wolcen, but we will most likely keep the idea for a later title.

Therefore, each act of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem will have its own map with different areas in it, and the transition between acts will be handled by teleportation/events. However, each act will be connected to a region and we’re making our best to ensure the game fluidity feels as close as possible to an open world.

Also, the environment will still allow random dungeon, optional random quests, and modifiers. So you’ll always have diversity on the maps.

The rotating camera

We wanted to try the rotating camera to customize player’s experience in the game. After checking our feedback, it seems that the feature is not used by a lot of players, and even considered quite confusing and disorienting.

Developing the game with a rotating camera forces us to make the view perfectly polished on 360° which adds a substantial amount of work for a feature barely used. To us, it means that the time spent taking into consideration the rotating camera could be used as well on more interesting features for the community. All these elements comforted us in the idea to put this feature aside and make the camera viewpoint more popular.

There will still be some cool camera effects though, and the game will be even more beautiful because we will have a full control on what you see when you play your character, but you will no longer have the possibility to rotate your camera in the game.

Will the game be completed?

This is a fair concern we’ve seen a lot in the latest reviews of the game and we want to inform you on how things are going now. Once again, I will just show you.

Perhaps you remember us from a year ago? We introduced the team in our small office on April 21, 2017:

Now, we’re April 26, 2018.

Welcome to Wolcen Studio!

Yes, the game will be finished and released. The Wolcen Team is growing for you, and most of all, thanks to you and your awesome support since the Kickstarter campaign. Let me assure you that we are all dedicated to making this great game flourish.

Later, I will show you around the studio and introduce all these new faces you don’t know yet.

But for now, as promised, I’ll let you take a sneak peek at what’s been done by the Wolcen team these last few months, and what you can expect when the game moves into Beta in September. Our team is very enthusiastic about this transition, and we hope you will like it despite the waiting it represents.

Thank you all for your support, now and always :)

Hello everyone!

Hotfix 0.5.0.5c

We’re pushing a small hotfix for 0.5.0.5 this evening(CET) to correct some issues encountered in the game, and add one extra:

  • Frost resistance fixed to avoid characters being permanently frozen.
  • Lightning effects display rectified.
  • Some crashes corrected.
  • Localization files updated with the latest community additions.

Many thanks to @lk0z@uru$, ldtime, and ammummummu, for these translation updates in Russian, Spanish, and Finnish!

And thank you all for your support :)
