Project Highrise - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

“It’s Thursday,” Graham corrected me earlier today as I chatted about the usual Wednesday stuff – hanging myself from Yggdrasil, saying ‘hump day’ loads as if it’s hilariously smutty, etc. If I can’t even remember which day it is, what chance do any of us have of remembering that a game we reviewed way back on Tuesday is now actually released? Just one more floor…. Perhaps the Bhurj Khalifa and and Shanghai Tower were not, after all, overblown acts of inter-continental willy-waving, but instead the result of builders and architects who could not resist the temptation of another neatly-wired layer of offices. Building skyscrapers is compulsive work, or at least that’s how building sim Project Highrise [official site] pitches it. I know the words ‘Sim Tower’ are flickering hungrily across the hind brains of readers Of A Certain Age, but I should say off the bat that Highrise has the mentality of an idle or clicker game as much as it does a sim.

There are many Sim games I’d like to see resurrected, prime among them SimEarth and SimLife, which were more enjoyable and educational than all of the geography classes I daydreamed through. SimTower is the outside pick though, its blend of construction and basic life sim making for a game as enjoyable to observe as to play.

Project Highrise [official site] is a new take on the formula and after spending some time building a tower of my own, I’m pleased to say Highrise as strong foundations, even if its occupants are a little plain.
