We'll be honest: today your favorite sim developer is taking a day off for its tenth birthday. But until yesterday, we were hard at work on a new update for Liftoff: FPV Drone Racing and it's a biggie!

However, with great changes comes great buggability... update 1.4.0 is not one we're just going to release into the wild straightaway. It'll be spending some time acclimatizing on the Experimental Branch first. If you want to get a sneak peek (and provide us with much-valued feedback), read how to access the Experimental Branch here.
Once we're confident about the stability and polish of these changes, they will be moved to the main game version.

What to expect?
Update 1.4.0 is a massive upgrade with a lot of improvements across the board. Chief among these is a complete overhaul of our flight behavior to Liftoff Physics 5.0. (Read all about it.) The long and short of it: you should see a significant performance increase, leading to a smoother experience, even on weaker systems. We've also moved the game to a new version of our game engine, for even more optimization and future-proofness.

Additionally, we've made a bunch of smaller quality of life fixes and features requests. These will continue in the near future, as we prepare up for a new level release. Stay tuned!

Read on for a full overview of the changes in 1.4.0

1.4.0 change list
  • Updated: flight controller - relies less on Unity's built-in physics and increases performance.

    1. The new Liftoff flight controller has an A.I. PID tune feature that adjusts itself based on the system's performance for a perfectly tuned setup in light. Manual tuning is also still possible.
    2. It relies a lot less on Unity's physics system, greatly decreasing the time required for physics and collision resolutions, freeing up more time for rendering and increasing overall FPS.
    3. Fixed: the throttle is now more responsive
    4. Support for multiple rate models. More models can be added later on.
  • Updated: Unity engine - better rendering and code performance.
  • Updated: Single player Infinite Race now has bots that continue flying, thereby behaving more like a multiplayer game.
  • Updated: players in a multiplayer game show up in the player bar on the right as soon as they join, instead of only upon entering the level
  • Updated: all multiplayer menus have been merged together into a single menu, removing several loading screens between joining, creating and browsing multiplayer games.
  • Updated: the "old school" level selection menu now allows you to directly select the drone, removing a loading screen.
  • Updated: all interactable UI elements have been made more consistent across menus and levels. Many elements now have an additional highlight to emphasize the selected element.
  • Updated (macOS-only): re-enabled voice chat. Before voice chat can be used, it will need to request microphone access. You can do so in the audio settings menu.
  • Added: macOS M1 platform support. The mac build contains a hybrid app which should run natively on both Intel and M1 platforms.
  • Added: search bar for tracks and races during multiplayer room creation.
  • Added: As a result of rendering optimizations, propellers can now once again remain in view (on supported rendering APIs, see next point.)
  • Fixed: On supported rendering pipelines (DirectX, Metal and Vulkan), the rendering distance is now fixed instead of dynamic.
  • Fixed: some frame parts referenced the wrong weight data
  • Fixed: the Night skin of the KHole frame had some colors not working as intended.
  • Fixed: the pause menu could become unresponsive when the menu was closed during a dropdown selection.
  • Fixed: drone trails now properly reset during a race, whereas before they would show a big jump from the previous positions.
  • Fixed: the field of view option is now consistent between menus and in-game controls.
  • Fixed: dropdown labels that were too long would not slide back to their original position.
  • Removed: the 'Display' option from the graphics menu since it's internally broken on the engine-side.
  • Removed: support for 32bit Windows and Linux versions of Liftoff.

The team is working hard on the next milestone update for Liftoff, but we did not want to keep you waiting for some quick fixes for recently reported bugs. Thank you to all who continue to share bug reports and feedback!

Changelist
  • Fixed issue with not restoring the drone configuration after playing a fixed spec game in a tournament or multiplayer.
  • Fixed infinite reset issue an untracked drone copy would trigger the reset mechanism.
  • Fixed issue with sliding labels in dropdowns not returning to their position.
  • Fixed issue with closing the in-game menu when the Quit-prompt is on screen when pressing ESC on the keyboard.
  • Fixed issue with the camera noise not being forced on in multiplayer games or tournaments when set as a game modifier.

Next Milestone update in the works
The Liftoff team is toiling away to get the next milestone update (1.4.0) for Liftoff out to you all. However, since these milestone updates are a lot bigger than the average update, development takes a bit longer.

What can you expect in the next Milestone update?  In addition to a list of fixes and small improvements, we are excited to introduce the next level in Liftoff physics simulation with "Liftoff Physics 5.0". We're also looking at a big improvement in game performance, the removal of a loading screen between environment and the drone selection and a completely new environment called "Short Circuit". Stay tuned for more soon!

Enjoying the HangarC03 and The Green revamp? There's more! Update 1.3.12 introduces a massive upgrade to the Liftoff Arena, featuring 3 interior floors to explore. On top we introduce battery spec racing features to the multiplayer.

Changelist:
  • Updated Liftoff Arena to have interior spaces to explore. The Night Fever version has been updated too.
  • Added: Multiplayer battery specification restrictions. The room host can set up a restriction to only use drone setups that have a certain type of battery (based on the amount of cells). Multiplayer rooms can be filtered on this restriction.
  • Updated: Camera angle limits in the workbench are now based on a per-frame basis, rather than on per-camera part basis.
  • Updated: Some frames now have access to different camera parts and restricted for others that would or wouldn't realistically fit on the frame.
  • Updated: Removed the need for selecting a track first when playing a race game mode. The selected race will infer the track.
  • Updated: Significantly reduced build size for Liftoff - Night Fever (from ±9.5GB to ±3GB). This also reduces update sizes for people having this DLC pack installed.
  • Fixed: Leaving a level with certain custom tracks would make the game hang in the loading screen or a black screen.
  • Fixed: Some drone setups would still get build with skins that the player didn't unlock yet.
  • Fixed: The drone in the main menu now switches to the correct model when starting the game if a custom drone setup is selected.
  • Fixed: If the ghost mode in the game settings was set to None, replays would not load correctly.
  • Fixed: When viewing a player's information in the multiplayer waiting room, the custom content information shown would switch to something else.
  • Fixed: When joining a room by name that is full or doesn't exist, the popup showing wouldn't do anything and block the game from backing out.

Ready to become a dogfighting legend? Update 1.3.11 introduces a brand new Dropout Race mode to the multiplayer, and makes the classic race mode better than ever. Quicker races, less loading screens, more excitement! The ultimate simulator for any self-respecting FPV racer, just got even better. May the best pilots win! :D

Changelist
  • Added: Dropout Race multiplayer game mode.
  • Updated: The classic and Dropout Race multiplayer game modes can be directly restarted from the results screen. This reduces the amount of time spent in menus and waiting for the next game.
  • Updated: In classic race multiplayer game mode, joining players can now directly enter the game and will be picked up as a racer the next time the race begins.
  • Updated: Giving other players a thumbs up is now done in the race score screen.
  • Updated: Added another initialisation pass when loading a level to reduce stutters when taking off the first time.
  • Updated: Added several visual states for players in multiplayer to denote whether a player was crashed, gave up, timed out, etc.
  • Updated: Added an 'eye'-icon next to the name of the player you're spectating.
  • Updated: When finishing a race in a tournament now directly shows the leaderboard in the results screen.
  • Fixed: A long-standing bug in the real-time ranking. Players would sometimes jump up in the ranking during a race when they finished a lap, while they were still behind other players.
  • Fixed: A visual glitch in multiplayer where the camera would have it's position reset in the level when switching spectator or returning to the current drone.
  • Fixed: A bug during drone building in a multiplayer game where it could get interrupted and player drones would not get visualised.

You may have seen the news float around the internet already, but we’ll soon be releasing a brand new title: Midnight Protocol. We’ve been working on this project for the last couple of years, and we’re very excited to show you our brand new trailer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEDUfoQIHBk

Midnight Protocol is a tactical, narrative-driven RPG where you play as Data, a hacker trying to find out who doxxed them. To fully immerse you in the mind and body of a hacker, Midnight Protocol is controlled 100% by your keyboard. You hack your way through networks by typing commands. Leech cash from your targets, Cloak yourself so the network doesn’t trace your signal, and open new pathways by paying the Troll Toll -- Midnight Protocol offers a fresh and accessible spin on hacking.

If that sounds as exciting to you as it does to us, please wishlist Midnight Protocol on Steam!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1162700/Midnight_Protocol/

And that’s not all! To celebrate the new trailer and announcements, we’re working on these awesome Midnight Protocol frame skins to be used in Liftoff! We’ll update you once they’re ready to be redeemed for the low price of free. And of course, we will continue supporting Liftoff in the same way we’ve always done over the past few years.
