Super Meat Boy

Who Wants Eight Inches Of Hot Vinyl Meat? Do you prefer your meat pristine and untouched or vigorously beaten? Symbiote Studios has you covered either way with a pair of limited edition Super Meat Boy vinyl figures, just in time to preorder for the holidays.

Symbiote Studios, the creators behind the silly anime-styled Jessica Chobot figures, has teamed up with Team Meat to forever immortalize Super Meat Boy in vinyl. Meat Boy's charm shines through, whether you prefer the normal figure or the one painted to look like it's been mugged.

Both figures stand eight inches tall and will set you back $39.95. I hope you like your meat rare; both versions are limited to 250 pieces.

Hit up the link to preorder one for yourself or someone you love. The figures aren't shipping until April, but the promise of a big slab of fake meat is almost as sweet as the real thing.

Super Meat Boy

Animal rights charity PETA have released a parody of Super Meat Boy called Tofu Boy, in which you play as a living block of Tofu, braving dangerous levels in a quest to rescue your girlfriend from an evil version of Meat Boy. Far from being angered by PETA's game, Team Meat has decided to put Tofu buy into Super Meat Boy as a special character.

PETA's Super Tofu Boy can be played now on the PETA website. Team Meat announced the introduction of Tofu Boy on Twitter, saying "attention internets!: Just finished animating Tofu Boy, he will be playable in the next update via code (update coming tomorrow)"

It'll be a PC exclusive update, too, with Team Meat saying they "cant update XBLA like we can on steam". Super Meat Boy players might want to keep an eye on their game, as a Team Meat are adding a secret Steam achievement to the game later today. For more information about Super Meat Boy check out the official Super Meat Boy site. The game's available to buy now on Steam and Direct 2 Drive.

You know what I do like? Quorn chicken pieces. They're really good, and cheap.

RPS reader (not making this up) Fuggles the Lightfuggly One sends word that PETA, aka People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has published a parody of Super Meat Boy. You can play Super Tofu Boy here. Is it still a parody if it’s just kind of… Super Meat Boy, again? There’s not much ridicule going on here, except for Bandage Girl two-timing Meat Boy. But you know, I always suspected she was bad news.

Which brings us to an interesting point. While Super Tofu Boy is a hundred miles away from the 24 carat running and jumping of SMB, it does use the same running and walljumping mechanics. For a quick & dirty look at the mechanics of Super Meat Boy, Super Tofu Boy can provide.

EDIT: Brave RPS commenter Terry points out that you could just play the Flash version of Meat Boy. So, I suppose this doesn’t need to exist after all.

Super Meat Boy

Any flesh-shy vegetarian gamers who fell for Super Meat Boy's perfect platforming but balked at all the gore sloshing about might welcome news that US animal rights group PETA has just launched its own food-based jumper: Super Tofu Boy.

Rather than take control of a cube of raw steak as you did in Team Meat's Xbox Live Arcade hit, PETA's effort sees the titular lump of bean curd trying to save Bandage Girl from the clutches of jilted ex-boyfriend Meat Boy.

Have a go - it's not half bad actually.

When Eurogamer spoke to Team Meat prior to the game's release, co-CEO Edmund McMillen told us he was disappointed that the game hadn't already attracted PETA's attention.

"I kind of wish that PETA had flipped out over it so that we could get some crazy press out of it," he said,
"but no, they don't seem to care at all."

A post on Team Meat's Twitter feed today reads "Holy sh*t, Peta made a Tofu parody game of Super Meat Boy... my dreams have come through!"

In other Super Meat Boy news, the brilliant indie platformer just launched on PC. There have been a few bugs reported though, and Team Meat are currently hard at work on a patch.

Super Meat Boy - Valve
- CRASH ON STARTUP Several Users reported crashes on Startup. An early version of the Steam Install Script got uploaded by me that didn't fully run DirectX, also I'm not sure I had all the proper prerequisites packed in the build. Either way, I have packed in everything that should be needed for DX, as well as updated the install script. Those who have already installed the game, I'm not sure this will help you...but if you are experiencing crashes on load after you have downloaded the update. Simply Click Here and run the DirectX Web Installer.

- CRASHING DURING GAMPLAY AFTER ABOUT 3 LEVELS There was an error where save games weren't saving, mainly because a folder was missing in the installer, not sure why it got made on some builds and not others, but it was the problem. This would cause grabbing bandage girl to crash at random times as well as initial runs of the game to crash. Those of you that had problems with the game starting even after the install of DirectX, this could have been your problem. This issue has been (As long as the update makes the folder) resolved.

- STUCK RESOLUTIONS / INVALID MONITOR INPUT Users would get stuck in resolutions that their monitors would not display. Not sure what is causing this because I look at what the monitor can display, but either way I made a work around. Users can now force resolution and window settings to get the game to a working state where they can adjust them further. The commands are as follows:

-fullscreen force full screen mode
-windowed force windowed mode
-640x480 force 640 x 480 resolution
-800x600 force 800 x 600 resolution
-1024x768 force 1024 x 768 resolution

With windowed and fullscreen options, the game will default to the last res that was tried, valid or no..so if you are having problems I recommend following the steps below to fix it. (I'm sure the majority of you know how to do this, but for those that don't see below).
  • Go to Library, then Right Click on Super Meat Boy and go to Properties
  • Click on Set Launch Options
  • Fill in the options starting with dashes and separated by spaces in the text field

-NO BROWNIE OR DR FETUS BOSSES I'm a moron and forgot to upload the boss files for Dr. Fetus and Brownie. Players would play their stages and see no bosses. I uploaded them now, they are in.

-MENU CRASHES There were some menu bugs, mainly with the pause menu and the character select menu in game. These have been fixed

PERFORMANCE ISSUES

We have scaled the textures best we can. There are 3 modes available to the command line. The gamedoes a miniprofile thing that determines what resolution and texture detail you should be running at...but sometimes this can be wrong. To help adjust performance issues you have 3 options:

-highdetail Highest detail
-meddetail Medium detail
-lowdetail Lowest detail

-lowdetail runs fine on a netbook. I have an Asus Aspire One. 1.6Ghz Intel Atom, 1GB Ram, Integrated Intel GMA 950 inside. If I switch on low detail, the game maintains a 50-60fps for most levels. It is very playable with extremely small load times. My computer here, with an NVidia 260, Q6600 Quad Core, 6GB Ram runs the game at like 400FPS Un-VSynced. So that's basically you're range. Those are the two computers I had available during development, so they represent high end and low end.

Speaking of VSync, the game needs to be V Synced. I can't stress this enough. If you are experiencing Cutscenes running fast, or Meatboy freaking out while standing still, just switch on VSync and you'll be fine. This is something we cannot fix since Graphics Drivers can choose to ignore developer settings. I tried artifically limiting the framerate today and honestly I didn't like how it looked. It wasn't as smooth as VSynced (obviously) so...just VSync it.

If your game is running slow or you are having slow load times, just do lowdetail and a lower resolution and you'll be fine. If my little Aspire One running XP can do it, we can all do it:)

[Small update on Load Times]
Thinking about it, the Atom has hyperthreading. I'm betting people with slow load times have single core non-hardward threaded processors. I'll look into this.

Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy, the hardcore platformer in which you play a living slice of meat trying to save his girlfriend from an evil baby in a jar wearing a tuxedo, is out now on Steam. The PC release of the game comes with a line up of unlockable indie characters, from VVVVVV's captain Viridian to Half Life 2's Lamarr the headcrab. Read on for details.

Here's the list of indie stars you'll find in the game. These characters may come with their own special abilities, though only Captain Viridian's has been talked about so far.

Mr. Minecraft, from Minecraft.
Lamarr the headcrab, the tame headcrab who breaks the teleporter in Half Life 2.
A Goo Ball, from 2D Boy's brilliant puzzler, World of Goo.
Josef, from Machinarium, a beautiful, hand drawn adventure game from Amanita design. In Machinarium, Josef can elongate his mechanical body to reach new places, will the same be true in Super Meat Boy?
Captain Viridian from VVVVVV. Viridian will be able to flip gravity, just as he could in VVVVVV.
Runman, from RunMan: Race Around the World.

The Xbox version of the game has only been out for a short while, but there's already a slice of DLC containing 20 levels, with many more planned. One will be a pack of remixed Super Meat Boy levels, which Team Meat's Edmund McMillen has described as "dark world versions of their dark world versions – super-dark worlds.” It seems likely that these extra levels will make their way to the PC version of the game.

Super Meat Boy is now available on Steam for $14.99 / £11.99.

EDIT: The following is based on extensive time spent with the 360 version of SMB, and we’re hearing reports that the PC version currently has memory leak and gamepad support issues. We’ll be posting a full review of the PC version very soon.

EDIT 2: We’ve spoken to Team Meat, and they tell us they’re working hard on an update to fix issues right now, which will be out today.

EDIT 3: Pow! Team Meat slurp into action.>

Super Meat Boy is OUT, you know. You could be buying it over at Steam right the hell now with £11.99 of your (let’s face it) ill-gotten money. The only problem is, there’s no demo. This is me letting out a sigh like a shot from an air rifle.

Super Meat Boy is a steaming steak of brilliance, served with a rich, leathery wine with a label that reads Chateau Just One More Go. A demo will unquestionably result in Team Meat selling more copies, and the sooner it arrives the better. Until then, I suppose I’ll have to sell you this game with my trademark hyperbole. You got a minute? If so, let’s do this. You need Super Meat Boy in your life because… (more…)

Super Meat Boy

The first in a series of free level packs has just gone live for vicious Xbox Live Arcade jumper Super Meat Boy.

Exclusive to Xbox 360, The Sewers of Dross pack adds 20 new levels, though the game's titular hero cedes the limelight to Gish, a 12lb lump of tar moonlighting from the 2004 PC indie platformer of the same name.

"This setup allows us to make chapters that no other character could beat except the one in question, a very fun restriction that allows us to make totally fresh levels that almost make the game feel like a whole new platformer," explained developer Team Meat on its blog.

The DLC will be free, though you'll need to have unlocked the 'Teh Internets' area in the game by collecting at least 20 bandages.

Team Meat also lifted the lid on future DLC plans for the game, posting the following schedule:

  • 12.??.2010 - Meat Boy (retro chapter based on the best of the meat boy flash prototype)
  • 12.??.2010 - I Meat Boy (we take the best levels in the game, remix them and make them harder!)
  • Q1 2011 - CommanderVideo Chapter (character exclusive chapter for commandervideo)
  • Q1 2011 - I wanna be the Kid (20 levels as hard as the kids warp zone, exclusive to the kid)
  • Q1 2011 - Best of user made p1 (20 of the best user submitted PC levels)

Can't wait for I Meat Boy. It's not as if the game was hard enough already.

Super Meat Boy launched on Xbox Live Arcade last month, winning a 9/10 from Eurogamer's Tom Bramwell.

A PC version is due on 30th November, with a WiiWare take to hopefully follow next year.
