Hey Lancers,It’s me, Muzzy, your friendly neighborhood Gremolitions chump. I’m here to talk about the wipe on the horizon!

I know, I know. You saw the word “wipe” and your separation anxiety is kicking in. Mine did too. Let’s all take a deep breath, knock back a can of Rask’s Brain Juice, put on our honorary game developer’s pants and look at what this means for the health of the game.

First of all, we are one patch closer to release! Were excited that we’re making progress. Secondly, this is a limited wipe. We’ve taken care to only reset areas that we need for testing, while leaving other area of progression untouched. We want to affect your experience as little as possible while also getting proper testing done. Wipes are essential for progressing the game experience. Devs need to know how a new feature functions from a fresh starting line, rather than in the middle of a race. We are, after all, in the wonderful world of Beta, where pay models change, lancers are OP, and we’ve had to swallow more bugs than a contestant on Fear Factor.

Important Notice: This is the last weekend to get the Freelancer Elo Beta Emblems! We will be introducing new Emblems to achieve in the next patch.

I’ll walk you through what’s going to be reset:
Season Progress
  • Because of your extraordinary playtesting, we’ve learned a lot! With this wipe, we’ll apply the lessons we’ve learned and give players a more consistent and fluid Season progression in a way that solves some of the issues we’ve identified. We’ll also give players an additional chapter to unlock! We are very interested in your feedback on other changes to the Seasons system as well. We’ll be beginning at Chapter 1 again, to test progress, but you’ll notice the unlock on subsequent chapters will be accelerated.
Season Rewards
  • It wouldn’t make much sense to wipe the Season progression without wiping the reason you progress! I’m going to miss a couple of the styles for my favorite lancers, and especially the emoticons. However, since the experience is being tweaked, I’m excited to earn, craft, and open those Loot Matrices again – it’s like Christmas every level!
Purchased Items
  • All your credits will be restored and any items you had obtained directly or indirectly via those purchases will be wiped.

What we are NOT wiping:
  • You will not lose your Freelancer levels.
  • Any awards you’ve earned, like Elo Banners and that elusive “Killed By Dev” title will stick around. (And yes, these are just examples, not the full list. “Dev Killer”, “Catalyzer”, etc will also not be wiped)
  • Non-Season player experience will not be wiped. You will still have level 10 which gives you access to Seasons. If you are not level 10 yet, you will maintain your current level.
  • Both Freelancer Elo and Player Elo will not be wiped.

This partial wipe is no easy task. The Devs explained to me just how much easier it is to do a full wipe/reset rather than this partial one, but they’re willing to put in the extra work as a service to the players while still wiping the minimum needed to carry the forward-thinking vision that game development requires.

IMPORTANT: It’s Beta. This is not the last wipe.

We have some time before we launch and that time will be filled with tons of development and polish. Much as with Seasons, we will be introducing other features that will give us all the best experience if started with a clean slate.
Beta is about experiencing a game before it releases, growing with the community and the game. In order to do so, there are certain aspects of Alpha/Beta events that we have to set our expectations properly to deal with. Be prepared!

Because of all our dedicated players, we have already gained a massive amount of data and feedback to help us create a much better user experience. I thank you, the team thanks you, and all of the players that will ever play this game are indebted to you for the time, dedication and patience you’ve extended to us.

Meet Celeste, The Rogue.

Celeste will steal your heart, or at least any valuables you may have.

Basic Gameplay

Celeste’s primary, Strong Arm, functions similarly to Grey’s Tranquilizer Dart – mouse closer = split more – and has the ability to pickup the spoils from afar – Haste, Energize, Might, and Heal! If you’re good at predictions, her Proximo Charge is a good tool to lay down some surprise damage and it’s quite effective at booby trapping the spoils you decide not to steal. Celeste’s Smoke Bombs ability is the first of it’s kind; it affects your enemy’s vision. We can’t wait to see the way you use this to your tactical advantage. Her dash, On The Run, allows Celeste to escape around corners and deal damage along the way. There’s even a mod for it that helps you lose your would be pursuers by dashing through your Smoke Bombs to turn invisible! Celeste’s ultimate, Safecracker, is a very powerful version of her primary that can gain the same buffs that her targets have – Energize, Might, Haste!

As with any kit with a free action ability you may feel stuck without options while your abilities come off cooldown. Lucky for you, her primary is really fun and effective. Being a Firepower, she’s quite squishy, and because she uses line of sight for all of her abilities, she tends to have to be in unfavorable places. You can counteract this by trying to stay in cover and using the range on her primary to your advantage. Like all master thieves, the shadows are your friend. The element of surprise may be your best bet in winning trades.

Abilities

Strong Arm
Launch two grapplers, which can deal damage to two separate targets or heavier damage to a single target. Grapplers can also can target power-ups instead, for use on the next turn.

Promximo Charge
Place a 4-turn trap that is invisible to enemies. If the enemy is on the trap during Blast Phase, the trap explodes, dealing direct damage. The trap takes 1 turn to arm and cannot detonate the turn it’s placed.

Smoke Bombs
Throw two smoke bombs that last until the end of the next turn. Smoke bombs block line of sight and deal indirect damage per turn.

On The Run
Dash to two locations in quick succession. Enemies hit take direct damage.

Safecracker
Fire dual grapplers that pass through enemies, targeted just like Strong Arm. If enemies hit have active might, energize, or haste buffs, gain the same effect the next turn.

Advanced Tactics

When playing as Celeste:
  • Position yourself so that you have clear line of sight to powerups. Grabbing them when you don’t have enemies within line of sight is a good way to keep an edge without having to stray too far from the action.
  • Be mindful of where enemies are in relation to Smoke Bombs, good placement means that you can see your enemies while they can’t see you.
  • On The Run can be useful for getting around corners and positioning yourself onto power-ups appearing next turn.
  • Place Proximo mines on locations you know enemies will want to end their turn such as on power-ups or behind common cover locations.
  • Safecracker can do immense damage but requires good positioning, try to catch enemies unawares by using Smoke Bombs.

Coming up against Celeste:
  • Celeste is very good at grabbing power-ups before you can move to them.
  • Consider dashing to them or moving to them the turn before they appear.
  • Move through Smoke Bombs after they are placed to get vision for your allies.
  • Be mindful of what area Celeste is in when she places her Proximo mine and try to avoid that zone.
  • Spread out when she has her ultimate ability, it can be devastating to grouped up targets.

Meet Dr. Finn, The ‘Eeler.

Dr. Finn is an effishient support who’s not afraid to fight!

Basic Gameplay

Dr. Finn is a Support lancer with healing, protection, disruption, and his primary attack is actually quite potent. He is very good at causing the enemy team to spread out, and with his ult, he can even cause them to clump together. His primary, Water Spout, is a large, adjustable AoE cone; Wider = less damage, Narrow = more damage. Refreshing Spray is great for full team heals given it’s large AoE cone, and it even heals Dr. Finn a little too! Electrifying eel does a great job of punishing enemies that clump because it jumps from enemy to enemy. Dr. Finn’s Bubble Trouble create a great opportunity to protect squishy allies with a shield, followed up by a good sized AoE slow once it pops. When you’ve got 100 energy Maelstrom is a great tool to line up amazing combos by pulling all enemies within it’s large radius towards the center of it.

His most prominent weakness is his lack of dashes, but between Bubble Trouble’s solid shielding and slow combo, and Refreshing Spray’s self healing, he can tank a surprising amount of damage. When they realize chasing you isn’t netting a kill fast enough, they’ll change targets to your allies. Your wide, long cone has the coverage to put pressure on them as they run away. And when they manage to jump on your allies after giving up on you, your Maelstrom provides great way to peel them off your team! A true support, through and through.

You can check out his Taunts and Abilities here:

Abilities

Water Spout
Dr. Finn fires off a high pressure water stream in a cone that deals more damage the more narrow the player makes it.

Refreshing Spray
Dr. Finn sends healing bubbles out in a large cone that also heals himself a little.

Electrifying Eel
Dr. Finn launches an electrified eel at an enemy lancer, dealing damage. The eel jumps to a nearby enemy next blast phase dealing damage again.

Bubble Trouble
Dr. Finn protects an ally (or himself) with a bubble shield during Prep and pops during Blast, dealing damage and slowing nearby enemies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yvv3mACKSQ&list=PL_p7iQgAOdKWiJiV_taZMb3g4mtYR2aO3&index=8

Maelstrom
Dr. Finn creates a maelstrom of churning waters that deals damage and pulls enemies towards it’s center.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grYIRTo6dM4&list=PL_p7iQgAOdKWiJiV_taZMb3g4mtYR2aO3&index=10

Advanced Tactics

When playing as Dr. Finn:

  • Position yourself so that Refreshing Spray can hit multiple allies. Works well with melee ‘lancers that group together
  • Many of Finn’s abilities are blocked by walls, be conscious of where you end your turn so that you keep line of sight to your desired targets. If you need to position defensively make sure Bubble Trouble is off cooldown so you can still help your team since its targeting is unaffected by line of sight.
  • Finn can generate immense amounts of energy by hitting large groups of people. Consider using Water Spout over other cooldowns to build up an early ultimate.
  • While Finn doesn’t have a dash, Bubble Trouble is excellent for disengaging against melee lancers with its defensive capabilities.
  • Maelstrom has high potential for wombo combos. Try pairing with another lancer that can take advantage of the large AoE pull in.
  • Placing Bubble Trouble on a Frontliner dashing in is a good way to keep enemies grouped up due to the slow.

Coming up against Dr. Finn:
  • Stay spread out if possible, all of Finn’s abilities hit multiple targets
  • Focus Finn when his Bubble Trouble is on cooldown. He has poor self preservation without the bubble.
  • The eels jump to ‘lancers within 5 spaces. If you have eels on you consider dashing away from your team before they can jump or if your friend is eeled dash away from them if you don’t want to take the damage.
  • Use displacement to try and get Finn or his allies behind walls so that he can’t get full value out of his AoE heal.

Tactical fireworks.

Atlas Reactor [official site] has chucked a uey and will launch under a revolutionary new model named “buy-to-play”, abandoning previous free-to-play plans. (Reminder: Atlas Reactor is the multiplayer turn-based tactical combat game with simultaneous turns, made by Trion Worlds, them lot behind the Minecraftbut Trove and MMORPG Rift.) The developers say that ideas they had to build a sustainable business model for Atlas Reactor under free-to-play would ruin the game’s fun so… they won’t.
