Portal 2

Valve's ongoing potato sack ARG has turned up a treasure trove of Portal 2 concept art. As well as a number of alternative designs for Chell, there are also more than 20 designs for a Portal 2 front cover, varying from bizarre to inspired. Each artist brings their own vision of Aperture Science, leading to some weird and wonderful works of art. You'll find a few of our favourites below.

Here's a brilliant poster based on a short skit from Portal 1 in which Glados recommends the Aperture Science "bring your daughter to work day." The twist here is that your daughter is a robot with no feet trapped in a weird mirror, which is an indication of exactly why you don't bring your daughter to Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.

This is one of the few images on show that actually demonstrates what the portals in Portal 2 do, and does it in a clever and interesting way. The trouble is, if you don't know what Portal is, this one's likely to leave you in the dark. Where did the portals come from? Is it a robot drawing game? Why does the robot look so sad?

Again, coming to this one cold might leave you thinking that Portal 2's some sort of robo-romance game. The striking colours and stark design are sure to make it stand out on store shelves, but it does look a little bit like a bionic love triangle, with Glados looking on jealously as the co-op bots flaunt their togetherness. Glados probably has an Aperture Science crusher lurking just out of the image.

We have no idea what is going on here. There's a definite Truman Show vibe, with a bonus giant eye thrown in for good measure. Is it the eye of god? Gabe Newell? Chell? It's unclear. All we know is that someone's gone and shot this person in the eye with a portal gun, which is surely in contravention of Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device safety protocols.

This is the piece of concept art that most closely mirrors the final pack shot. It's got it all. Portals, Chell and the Aperture Science labs in the background. It's interesting to note that Valve have gone with the co-op robots in all of their trailers and posters for the game so far. The bumbling co-op bots have far more established character than your silent single player protagonist, and end up replacing her entirely in the final pack shot below.

Here's the image that will be on the front of the game when it hits store shelves next week. It's very similar to the prototype above, but Valve also replaced the boring staircase with one of the new glowing energy bridges, squeezing in another Portal 2 element into the image. It'd be difficult to get more of Portal 2 into this shot without Glados photobombing it, and perhaps a rain of propulsion gel, and perhaps a giant floating cake with "this is a lie" spelled in icing on its surface.

There are plenty more prototype pack shots over on Super Punch. There are some superb alternative designs for Chell on there, too. You'll find a few below.

Portal 2's Starlet Certainly Looks Different In This Concept ArtPortal star Chell is keeping things simple for the game's sequel. Same orange jumpsuit, it's just...rolled up. This concept art for the character shows she could have looked not just different, but a lot different.

Uncovered as part of Valve's vast, potato-based alternate reality game being run to promote Portal 2, the art shows Chell looking like an extra from Brazil, an extra from THX 1138 or a robo-legged runner from Mirror's Edge.

While they're interesting designs one and all, we're obviously glad Valve kept it simple for the final design. After all, two of their other most iconic female stars - Half-Life's Alyx and left 4 Dead's Zoey - get around in a hoodie and a track top respectively. No need to make things messy just for the sake of it!

There are also some great pics showing concepts for her trademark "chicken leg" stilts, as well as designs for the co-op mode's robot colleagues.

Portal

As forewarned, Valve has released the first portion of its Portal digital comic at IGN. In it, we meet Rat Man, rank and file Aperture Science workers and learn more about the origins of GlaDOS. Read Portal 2: Lab Rat now.

Portal 2

Valve are releasing a free Portal 2 comic tomorrow with a story that aims to bridge the considerable time gap between the two games. According to Valve it will feature a "much-rumored yet never seen character," and was created in-house by writer Ted Kosmatka and artist Andrea Wicklund, in collaboration with Portal 2 writers, Chet Faliszeck and Erik Wolpaw.

IGN will be hosting the comic on Friday, and already have some preview pages up, so you can get a taste of the art style and some of the overriding themes. The madness of the main character seems to be one of them. Either that, or the companion cube really is talking to him. For more Portal 2, check out the latest Portal 2 trailer, devoted to the game's lovely, huggable turrets. The game's out on April 19 in the US, and April 21 in Europe. That's less than two weeks away!
Portal 2

The latest Portal 2 trailer tells you why you'd want to own your very own Aperture Science turret, probably the friendliest tools of death you're ever likely to fall victim to. This is more than just another Portal 2 trailer, however, hidden away between the cuts there are secret messages, encoded in ASCII, which feed back into the mysterious goings on in Steam's recent potato sack sale.

Above is a freeze frame from the new Portal 2 trailer, taken at about the 38 second mark. The string of numbers running across the top is the second part of a message that was translated by diligent members of the Valve ARG wiki. Here's the message.

"Here's Da Beens, Dougtato: You found many. Find the rest. MiKaXsUs FTW Also... superdinoman's mom."

A collection of updates in each of the indie games featured in the Potato sack sale have unveiled a number of clues. Playing the Super Meat Boy soundtrack in Audiosurf reveals a giant potato at the end of the level, a poster outside of Toki Tori developers HQ has another clue, and hints in The Wonderful End of the World have led investigators to the a series of blogs from fictional people. It's all related to an overarching potato plot, but there's no end point in sight yet.
Portal 2 - the gish
This week's reason to pre-invest in Aperture Laboratories: CEO and founder Cave Johnson's announcement that the applied sciences company is making its military-grade turret line available to consumers. The first, last and most scientific word in personal defense, the Home Safety Turret should be a hot seller when Aperture goes public April 19th.

Check out the video here.

Aperture was kind enough to send us a prototype Home Safety Turret in an effort to "sweeten the pot" (Cave's words) for any potential investors here at Valve. We're still leafing through its 33,000-page instruction manual, most of which seems to be "hold harmless" clauses releasing Aperture from any responsibility in the use, unpackaging, cleaning, reloading, holding or entering the proximity of its product.

We'll be sure to give you an update the second we get it up and running. In the meantime, why not pre-invest today?
