“FUCKING END THE GAME!” Jeppe ‘Trixtank’ Gylling was roaring as his team, Paradigm, bore down on the opponent’s titan the beefy glowing final objective you need to destroy to win a game of Smite [official site].

It was the European and North American LAN event known as Super Regionals and on the line for Paradigm and their foes was a place at the Smite World Championships in January. Five teams would be making it through to the competition: two from North America, two from Europe and the winner of a match between the NA and EU third placed teams.

Spoilers after the jump if you haven’t seen Sunday’s finals:>

With Chiron joining the Hunter ranks of SMITE, we talked with Daniel Fishman (HiRezFish) about the Centaur’s inspiration.

What were the major Goals for Chiron?

We had a couple. First, we wanted him to feel like a horse. We have lots of gods, and most of them feel like people. He’s part horse, and we really wanted to bring that out. After that, it was important to us that he was accessible to our entire player base, and not gated by a high skill cap. As we developed his kit, we also wanted to create a focus on his abilities more than his Basic Attacks, similar to Neith or Anhur.

What key parts of his Mythos did you choose to focus on and why?

Chiron in mythology is all about legacy. He actually dies from the poison on Hercules’s arrows, but is memorialized in the stars by Zeus for all of the knowledge he contributed. We tried to bring that out with his more support-y abilities like Training Exercise and Herbal Medicine – the latter of which was also part of his lore as the inventor of herbal medicine and surgery.

Which skill do you feel is the most unique to Chiron?

I’d say his dash. The coming back from death mechanic on his ult is pretty cool, but we set out to distinguish Chiron’s dash from the dozens we already have in the game, and I feel like we really succeeded. The kicks really sell the fact that he’s a horse, and doing his archery shooting while running was a cool development as well.

What do you expect Chiron to bring to a team?

Chiron brings a little bit of utility, a decent sustain, and some serious poke. If he elects to invest less heavily in Training Exercise, by relying on his support for help clearing the lane, he does really well in trades. He may also be able to build differently than your average hunter, offering him a chance for some niche compositions.

Chiron, the Great Teacher, enters the Battleground of the Gods. True to his nature, this versatile hunter brings many supportive abilities to the battlefield. This patch also includes a new game mode, some awesome new skins for a good cause and a long-requested feature -- early surrender logic.

New God: Chiron, The Great Teacher

Passive : Herbal Medicine
Every 12s Chiron collects herbs for a poultice, which increases all healing Chiron receives (+10%) for each poultice he carries. Each time he uses an ability, the lowest Health ally within 30 units is healed for (30 + 5 per god level over 5s).
Max Stacks : 3.

Training Excercise
Chiron warns his teammates to evade the area, removing Crowd Control effects so they can escape before it explodes, damaging and Crippling all enemies in the area. (70/125/180/235/290 + 80% of your Physical Power.) Cost: 55/60/65/70/75. Cooldown: 15s.

Masterful Shot
Chiron passively marks his enemies as targets when he damages them with Basic Attacks or his Ultimate ‘Centaurus’, reducing their Physical Protections by 3%. He may activate this ability to fire seeking arrows at all marked targets within range, damaging (70/95/120/145/170 + 70% of your Physical Power) and Slowing them (23/27.5/30/32.5/35%) for 2 seconds. Cost: 65. Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10s.

Giddyup!
Chiron gallops forward, damaging enemies (70/95/120/145/160 +50% of your Physical Power), knockup up minions, and kicking enemy gods behind him. Chiron may fire Basic Attacks while charging. Cost: 70/75/80/85/90. Cooldown: 16s.

Ultimate: Centaurus
Chiron is transformed into a constellation, and can fire three long-distance shots (100/145/190/235/280 + 60% of your Physical Power), even through walls. If Chiron would be killed during this ability, he does not die until he runs out of time or shots. Killing an enemy in this state returns Chiron to life with Health equal to the damage dealt instead. Cost: 80/90/100/110/120. Cooldown: 90s.

New Map - Clash (Beta)
  • “Clash” is a new casual game mode in which players will play as a team of five against an opposing team to push down the enemy Titan. The map features a large open center with two lanes, as well as a split base where the Titan spawns, further away from the fountain than in other modes. “Clash” plays like a mixture between the fast paced combat of Arena and the pushing and strategy that Conquest offers. The average game time is 20 minutes. This queue provides normal rewards.
    • “After a successful technical test on the Public Test Server we are ready to gather more feedback! While we already have some plans in store for changes, we wanted to get a large sample of feedback before we make any large scale changes to the map. Clash will be active for a limited time until December 1st.”
