FREE-TO-PLAY WEEKEND

For many, fear is better with friends. There’s no better time to invite your crew into The Fog than Halloween weekend (October 27th to November 1st), when Dead by Daylight will be free-to-play on all Platforms.

We get it – October has that eerie quality about it. The nights are a little longer, the air is a little colder, and there’s that unspoken drive to consume all things horror. With that in mind, Dead by Daylight is the perfect place to spend All Hallows Eve.

See you in The Fog,

Dead by Daylight - dance_BHVR
Cheating is an ongoing battle in any online game, and Dead by Daylight is no exception: There is a never-ending arms race between game developers and cheat makers to find and fix new vulnerabilities. Tackling these vulnerabilities has always been and will remain a top priority to us.

Lately, many of you have shared your experiences playing against cheaters, and we have no intention to leave you in the dark. First and foremost, we are abundantly aware of the ongoing situation, and we have been treating it very seriously. To put it bluntly, cheating sucks, and while we have made many measures to prevent it, it frustrates us just as much as you to hear that someone ruined your experience.

We tend to stay quiet when it comes to cheating to avoid giving cheat developers vital information, but given recent events, we’ve decided to pull back the curtain and shed some light on what we’ve been doing to combat cheating and what we’ll be working on moving forward. Please forgive any vague language in this post; we cannot share any information which could be used to make it easier to cheat.

How We Deal With Cheaters

In Dead by Daylight, we have zero tolerance for cheaters. Once we detect someone has cheated (or is trying to cheat), their account is permanently banned from the game. There are a few ways we address cheats:

  1. Automated bans: We work with our anti-cheat partner, Easy Anti-Cheat, to report and track new cheats. If the anti-cheat detects one of these being used, they are automatically banned.
  2. In-game countermeasures: We make changes to both the game client and dedicated servers to prevent cheaters from doing certain things. This lessens the impact of cheats and reduces the amount of damage they can do.
  3. Manual bans: We investigate your reports and manually block cheaters. This is crucial when a new cheat has not yet been tracked by the anti-cheat.
In the last 7 days alone, we have banned over 2,000 cheaters, contributing to a total of over 200,000 banned over the lifetime of the game. Additionally, we have continued to expand our team and processes to deal with cheaters more efficiently.

There is still work to be done, but our team has made considerable efforts to strengthen various aspects of the game, such as preventing modification to certain game files, to block specific avenues for cheaters to exploit and lessen the impact of the cheats that surface.

Future Improvements

Going forward, we plan to further bolster the game against cheaters. This will be done in various ways.

First, we will continue to identify & fix vulnerabilities to limit the effects of cheats. This includes additional measures to prevent player sniping (forcefully joining a specific player’s lobby). The first version of this fix is currently slated for this fall, and we’ll continue to monitor the situation to ensure that it does not resurface. Fixes like these will be an ongoing process.

Second, we will be adding failsafes to commonly exploited portions of the game. For example, should a match ever continue beyond the end game collapse for longer than 5 minutes, the game will forcibly end. Additionally, the max game time will be reduced from 2 hours to 1 hour or less. This particular change is planned for this Q4 2022, and further measures are being explored.

Third, we will continue to implement server-side validation where possible. This takes authority away from a cheater’s game client and puts it on a dedicated server, making cheating much more difficult. This is an ongoing process.

Fourth, we have improvements in the works for both our player support tools to better deal with cheats internally, and in-game report system to give you feedback on when a player you’ve reported was banned. Player reports are a keystone of our cheat prevention measures and providing this feedback is essential to letting you know that your reports are being dealt with seriously. These improvements are scheduled for Q1 2023.

Beyond in-game improvements, we will be communicating on our progress against cheats more regularly as part of our Developer Updates and beyond. We want to keep you in the loop and share as much information as we safely can. Last but not least, we want to stress that these are by no means the only measures we are working on, but rather the ones we can safely share with you at this time.

How You Can Help
While cheating will always be dealt with as swiftly as possible, your help is invaluable. There are a few ways you can help is in the fight against cheating.

The best way to help is to use the in-game report system. These reports are critical and help us identify possible cheaters. If you have a video of someone cheating, you can also send it to our support team through this link: https://support.deadbydaylight.com/hc/en-us

Beyond reporting cheating you encounter, our support team is always available should you have any information on potential exploits or cheats.

Fostering a safe, cheat-free experience in Dead by Daylight is and will always be a top priority for the team. As with any online game, cheating is an ongoing battle, and we remain committed to making cheating as difficult as possible. We have been working diligently to limit the number and impact of cheats, and we hope that this post shared some insight into the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes. Going forward, we hope to keep you in the loop with regular communications regarding cheating and share as much info as we safely can.

Until next time…

Bring the trial to a gruesome end with a Finishing Mori.

A hint of each Killer’s character shines through with their Mori, whether that’s The Trickster’s showmanship or The Hag’s… questionable diet. The only way to see these animations currently is to use a Memento Mori offering or equip one of only a few select Perks, leading to them rarely being seen. Moreover, Moris have garnered a somewhat negative reputation over the years, being used out of spite against a particular Survivor.

This upcoming Public Test Build (PTB) will feature an early version of the new Finishing Mori system. Unlike most PTBs, this feature will not be going live in the following update. There’s still some work to be done before it’s ready to be released, but we wanted to give you an opportunity to try it out and share your thoughts in advance!

LAST STANDING
When all other Survivors are dead, dying, hooked, or have escaped, you become the Last Standing. Both your and the Killer’s senses are heightened, granting you a wider field of view. Rescuing a Survivor will end the Last Standing phase. But being downed as the final Survivor, on the other hand, will trigger the Finishing Mori.

When the last Survivor is downed, the trial will draw to a climactic end. Both the Survivor and Killer will be moved to a preset point on the map, free of any obstructions that may get in the way, and the Killer’s Mori animation will begin. Any Survivors still in the trial will be killed by The Entity and treated like a sacrifice.

HOPE IS NOT LOST
With this new system in place, leaving Survivors on the ground (A.K.A. ‘Slugging’) may seem more appealing, opening the possibility of ending the match early. But the Survivors aren’t going to give up without a fight: After being left on the ground for 45 seconds, Survivors will now gain the ability to pick themselves up without the need of any Perks. This time is affected by recovery speed effects.

PERK UPDATES
With both the Mori and the ability to pick yourself up now part of the base kit, a handful of Perks that grant these abilities will need adjustments. Therefore:
  • The ability to pick yourself up has been removed from Unbreakable, Soul Guard, No Mither, and Boon: Exponential, as this is now part of the base kit
  • The ability to Mori Survivors has been removed from Rancor and Hex: Devour Hope, as this is now part of the base kit
In addition, some of these perks will have changes made for the PTB. However, since this is an early preview, the in-game descriptions have not yet been updated. These are:
  • Unbreakable: Now increases dying self-recovery speed by 80/90/100%
  • Rancor: Once all generators are powered, the Obsession’s aura is revealed for 5 seconds, and they are permanently inflicted with the Exposed Status Effect
  • Hex: Devour Hope: Once 5 tokens have been earned, any Survivor placed on a hook is instantly sacrificed
As always, we’ll be keeping a close eye on your feedback for any of the affected perks.

MEMENTO MORI OFFERINGS
With the Finishing Mori being triggered automatically when the last Survivor is downed, Memento Mori Offerings no longer have any use and will also receive an update. These offerings will now award a bounty of Bloodpoints based on the number of Survivors killed if you earn a Finishing Mori.
  • Cypress Memento Mori: Gain 8,000 Bloodpoints if at least 2 Survivors are killed and the match ends in a Finishing Mori
  • Ivory Memento Mori: Gain 12,000 Bloodpoints if at least 3 Survivors are killed and the match ends in a Finishing Mori
  • Ebony Memento Mori: Gain 20,000 Bloodpoints if at least 4 Survivors are killed and the match ends in a Finishing Mori
Much like the Perk changes listed above, please keep in mind that these Offering changes will not be released without the Finishing Mori system.

The Finishing Mori system, anti-slugging mechanic, and other changes mentioned in this post will be available for testing during next week’s Public Test Build. As a reminder, these new features will not be a part of the 6.3.0 update: This is an early preview that is not yet ready for release. We would like to gather your feedback early as we continue developing these features to make their eventual release as smooth as possible.

Until next time…

  • Matchmaking Incentives re-enabled: 2PM ET
Features
New Killer - The Mastermind
New Perk: Superior Anatomy
  • When a survivor performs a fast vault within 8 meters of you, this perk activates. The next time you vault a window, your vaulting speed is increased by 30%/35%/40%. This perk deactivates after vaulting a window. This perk has a 30 seconds cool-down.
New Perk: Awakened Awareness
  • When carrying a survivor, you can see the aura of other survivors within 16/18/20 meters of your position.
New Perk: Terminus
  • When exit gates are powered, this perk activates. While the perk is active, injured, downed and hooked survivors are inflicted with the broken status effect until exit gates are open. When exit gates are open, survivors will stay broken for an additional 20/25/30 seconds.
New Survivor - Ada Wong
New Perk: Wiretap
  • After repairing Generators for a total of 33%, this perk activates. After repairing a Generator for at least 3 seconds, press the Ability button to install a spy trap, which stays active for 60/70/80 seconds. The aura of the trapped generator is revealed in yellow to all Survivors. When the Killer comes within 14 meters of the trapped generator, their aura is revealed to all Survivors. Damaging the generator destroys the Wiretap.
New Perk: Reactive Healing
  • When another survivor loses a health state in a 32 meters radius around you while you are injured, instantly increase your healing progression by 40%/45%/50% of the missing healing progression.
New Perk: Low Profile
  • When you become the last Survivor standing, this perk activates. Hide your scratch marks, pools of blood, and grunts of pain for 70/80/90 seconds.
New Survivor - Rebecca Chambers
New Perk: Better Than New
  • Upon completing a healing action on another survivor, the targeted survivor gets a 12%/14%/16% speed boost to healing, opening chests, and cleansing and blessing Totems. Survivors keep the bonus until they lose a health state.
New Perk: Reassurance
  • When within a 6 meter radius around a hooked survivor, use the Active Ability Button 2 to pause their struggle progression for 20/25/30 seconds. If they are on the struggle phase, it also pauses the Struggle Skill Checks. Reassurance can only be triggered once per survivor per hook instance.
New Perk: Hyperfocus
  • After hitting a great Skill Check while repairing or healing, this perk gains 1 token, up to 6 tokens. Each token increases the chance of Skill Check trigger by 4%, the Skill Check cursor speed by 4% and the bonus progression for great Skill Checks by 10%/20%/30% of its base value. The perk loses all tokens in case of normal Skill Check success, Skill Check fail, or if you stop performing the action by any means.
New Features: Streamer Options (PC Only)
  • These privacy options are available under the Privacy section of the General tab in the Options menu, and are intended to help reduce targeting and harassment of players who stream the game
  • Anonymous Mode
    • Replaces your account name with your selected character's name for other players. Players in your group will still see your account name

Mettle of Man
  • Reverted to its previous behavior prior to 6.1.2
    • After you earn 3 Protection Hit scoring events, Mettle of Man activates. Once activated, the next occasion that would put you into the dying state from the injured state is ignored. The next time you heal back to full health, your aura will be revealed to the Killer when you are further than 12/14/16 meters from the Killer. Mettle of Man will deactivate the next time you are put into the dying state. Increases your chances to be the Killer’s Obsession.
  • Removed the Endurance icon from the status effect display, since the perk does not use Endurance
Blast Mine
  • Changed the behaviour when a placed mine times out

Dead by Daylight - dance_BHVR
We’re back with another Developer Update, a series of posts detailing all the changes coming to Dead by Daylight. In this edition, we’ll cover the balance changes from the 6.2.0 Public Test Build (PTB) and other various tweaks.

Bloodweb Costs

Last month, we overhauled our progression system to make it easier than ever to earn Perks. Under this new system, Perks are now unlocked through Prestige and are immediately available to use on other characters without needing to be found in the Bloodweb. Higher tier versions of their Perks can be earned with subsequent Prestiges, or randomly throughout the Bloodweb.

Alongside these changes, we removed the Bloodpoint bonuses from two perks: Barbecue and Chili, and We’re Gonna Live Forever. As some of you have rightly pointed out, without these bonuses, you could afford fewer Bloodweb nodes per match making it harder to earn Items, Add-ons, and Offerings than before.

We want to remedy this as soon as possible. With the release of the Resident Evil: PROJECT W Chapter, we are reducing the cost of nodes in the Bloodweb by roughly 33%. See the chart below for a full cost breakdown.

You may be wondering, “Why not increase the Bloodpoints earned instead?” This is a good question, and one we took into consideration.

First: A 33% reduction in Bloodweb costs is effectively the same as increasing Bloodpoint earnings by 50% across the board. For example, 30,000 Bloodpoints can be exchanged for 15 common nodes when priced at 2,000 Bloodpoints each. At 3,000 Bloodpoints, you would need 45,000 Bloodpoints to get the same number of nodes.

Second: The reduction makes all Bloodpoints more valuable, not just those from matches. This means that even your daily and Archive challenges have more purchasing power than before.

Ultimately, we found that reducing Bloodweb costs was the fairest option and provides the best value.

Camping & Tunneling

In this past Mid-Chapter, we added 5 second Endurance & Haste effects to all unhooked Survivors. These status effects are designed to give the unhooked Survivor a fighting chance by allowing them to get to a nearby pallet or window if the Killer decides to chase them again.

We released this feature with safe numbers to ensure that things don’t get out of hand. Now that we’ve had some time to see how they play out, we feel comfortable increasing them further.

In 6.2.0, we will be increasing the duration of the Haste & Endurance effects to 10 seconds. Additionally, we’ll be increasing the Haste effect to 10% increased speed (from 7%).

We hope you’ll find these improvements to be much more effective in discouraging the Killer from chasing the same Survivor immediately after they’re unhooked.

Mettle of Man

In a recent update, we released a new version of Mettle of Man which worked consistently with other Endurance effects. Many of you voiced concerns with this version of the perk being weaker than before, favouring a harder to earn effect that couldn’t be lost. Our intention with this change was never to make the perk weaker. Therefore, alongside the Chapter release, we will be reverting the recent update to Mettle of Man. Mettle of Man will instead grant a unique protection effect that is not cancelled by Conspicuous Actions like Endurance. To help differentiate them, this perk will no longer cause the Endurance status effect to appear in the HUD when activated.

Post PTB Changes

The halls of the Racoon City Police Station were packed in this PTB. Whether you were hurling Survivors at literal breakneck speeds or being hurled, we want to thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’ll be making a few changes in time for release. As always, these changes are by no means final: We’ll continue to monitor how everything performs and reassess once the dust has settled.

The Mastermind
We’ll start with The Mastermind himself, Albert Wesker. One thing we noticed during this PTB was that the collision detection on The Mastermind’s rush was a little too sensitive, causing the Killer to bump into objects they shouldn’t have. For the release, we’ve toned this down so you don’t accidentally bump into obstacles as often.

We’ve also polished the way Virulent Bound interacts with pallets & windows. During the PTB, Survivors would not take damage if The Mastermind bounded towards them as they were vaulting. This was not intentional: The Mastermind will now hit them with his tentacles if they’re caught in the middle of a vault. Additionally, Survivors could wait on the other side of a pallet, vaulting back over it before The Mastermind could attack after vaulting. Going forward, standing too close to a vault location as The Mastermind bounds over it will result in the Survivor being injured.

Next, we’ve revisited his power in loops. We found his base movement speed between bounds to be a little slow, making it difficult to get into position for another bound. For the release, we have increased The Mastermind’s movement speed between bounds to 2.76m/s (from 2.3m/s)- the speed previously achieved by using The Loose Crank add-on. Since this add-on has been added the base kit, we have reduced its movement speed bonus to 8% (from 20%) to compensate for a new total of 2.98m/s.

One of the quirks of Virulent Bound is its ability to throw Survivors at each other, injuring both Survivors in the process. Often times, those unfortunate enough to have their friends flung at them would not even realize that they’d been injured. To make this more obvious, being injured from healthy from a Survivor thrown by The Mastermind will now cause Deep Wounds.

Last but not least, we’ve slightly toned down the Survivor collision detection of The Mastermind’s bound. We found this to be a little too generous on the PTB, allowing the Killer to grab Survivors that were not in front of him. This change will require a little more precision on the Killer’s part and make Virulent Bound feel fairer to Survivors.

Perks
On to perks: We’ve made a few tweaks to the new perks following the PTB. As always, we’ll continue to fine tune each of them as necessary once the update goes live.

Reassurance: This perk allows you to pause the hook progression of another Survivor, buying you and your team more time to work on generators if the Killer is camping. On the PTB, Reassurance had a 40 second cooldown and could be used repeatedly. When coordinated with other Survivors, this could have been abused to keep the hooked Survivor permanently on the hook, preventing them from being sacrificed against their will.

For the release, we have removed the cooldown of Reassurance. Instead, Reassurance can only be used once per hook instance. The effects of this perk can still be chained together if multiple Survivors are running Reassurance for a maximum delay of 90 seconds. This will keep the perk’s effects potent without being abusable.

Awakened Awareness: This perk grants the Killer aura reading while they are carrying a Survivor. On the PTB, this effect also lingered for 2 seconds after the carried Survivor is dropped, hooked, or wiggled free. This effect could be a little oppressive on certain Killers, especially when paired with Lethal Pursuer to extend the aura reading effect and Starstruck to make Survivors Exposed. For the release, we’ve removed the lingering aura reading from Awakened Awareness. As a result, Lethal Pursuer will no longer extend the duration of Awakened Awareness’ aura reading.

Low Profile: Low Profile hides your scratch marks and pools of blood when you become the last Survivor for 70/80/90 seconds. Unfortunately, this meant the perk would only activate once per match, and only if you happened to be the last Survivor standing. For the release, we have changed this to include any time you are the only Survivor who is not dying, hooked, or dead as well, allowing it to activate throughout the match. Additionally, Low Profile will also mask your grunt of pain in addition to its existing effects.

Better Than New: This perk granted any Survivor you healed a 6% action speed bonus to repairing, healing, chest opening, and totem cleansing for 25/30/35 seconds. We found the duration of this perk to be a little low to make much use out of the bonus speed. For release, we’ve made a few changes to this perk:

Better Than New now grants a 12%/14%/16% action speed bonus to healing, chest opening, and totem cleansing & blessing.

Better Than New no longer has a duration. Survivors instead keep this bonus until the next time they take damage.

We hope this will make it easier to get value out of Better Than New.

Racoon City Police Station
Finally, we come to the Racoon City Police Station. In this Chapter, the map has been split into two: The East Wing, and the West Wing. Each map includes the main hall and a small section of the opposite wing, greatly reducing its size compared to the original. We’ve also opened new pathways between various rooms to make the maps easier to navigate, as well as widening some hallways to make the make feel less claustrophobic and allow more interesting gameplay.

In the PTB, we found that there were too many pallets scattered around the Racoon City Police Station now that its size has been reduced. We’ve reduced the number of pallets on the newly renovated maps for when the Chapter releases.

With that, we’ve reached the end of this edition of the Developer Update. Everything we covered today will appear in alongside the release of Dead by Daylight: Resident Evil: PROJECT W Chapter in the coming weeks. As always, we look forward to hearing what you think once you’ve had a chance to try out the changes!

Until next time…
