As lots of players are aware, tethers have been tanking performance! Y'all are building way more tethers while building ramps to the moon than I expected! Also, the tether system could have been better from the start.
In any case, I've rewritten a whole bunch of the tether system with massive performance gains, and have uploaded it to the [beta] branch on Steam. We'll put it to the Default branch once we verify it doesn't break anything else!
How can you help us? Switch over to the beta branch by right clicking on ASTRONEER->Properties->Betas->"beta - Experimental builds." (Make sure you switch back to main when you're done!)
Information we are looking for: Look for differences in how [beta] (0.2.96.0) behaves/performs versus the [default] (0.2.93.0) branch. If you can verify that a mechanic has stopped working, or an old save file stops working, and can consistently observe the difference between the two builds, let us know in the comments! And definitely let us know if this build improves your performance when using lots of tethers.
Along with huge tether perf improvements, I've also put LOD distances on all the base items and also fixed up how often the game updates unnecessary things. The LODs on the base are now as aggressive as the LODs on plants and rocks and world elements. Which is to say, pretty aggressive, but we'll continue to improve that as well.
WARNING: If you ever switch to [beta] you must ABSOLUTELY be aware that you're opening yourself up to new kinds of bugs, especially if you save the game with the new version. This may render your old saves unusable. If you don't want this to happen to you, PLEASE JUST WAIT for it to be live on the default branch.
Let us know if we should push this build to Default, but only after you've done some testing ;) Thanks for your help!

We spent most of today looking at issues which were completely blocking many users from playing the game, and were able to create a hotfix for a few problems:
1. Game goes to unplayable framerate upon going underground. Seems an issue with computing reverb on certain hardware. We've disabled reverb for now and will investigate later.
2. Fix for 100% crash for users with Intel Core2 Duo and Core2 Quad processors.
3. Fix for SteamVR launching alongside the game. We don't have VR support!
To get the patch immediately, just restart Steam. Please let us know if any of your issues are fixed for this patch, and continue to send us info about any other issues!

Having issues with the game crashing or with unplayable framerate even with well-above-spec hardware? We've just uploaded a patch to Steam that we think should fix many (but not all) of people's issues. Let us know if this fixes your issue, and if not, which hardware you are using and what problems you are still having!
To guarantee you've got the update right away, just relaunch Steam.
