ARK: Survival Evolved

On Tuesday, an Ark: Survival Evolved YouTube channel called H.O.D. Gaming uploaded a video called "2019 GUIDE TO MESH MONKEYS (PART 1)." The owner of the channel, a 27-year old Australian named Luke, told me that it was at least partially inspired by his own personal vengeance. "Each time i would build a base a cheat or exploiter would come and ignore my base defense and exploit my base and steal my work," he said, over email. "Bases take hundreds of hours to build and cheaters can ignore the in game defense through this method."

So naturally, Luke framed his video as a dulcet nature documentary. "Mesh monkeys," he said, are the vile, regrettable creatures who populate the server blades of Ark: Survival Evolved and muck up the multiplayer with cheap tricks that ruin the experience for everyone else. "Today, we're going to explore the mesh monkeys, and the techniques they use to supersede base defenses," he says. For the next 10 minutes, Luke methodically unveiled a few of the tried-and-true exploits that have existed in the game code, he says, since the game released back in 2017. They include a clever server-relog that puts your character out-of-bounds, a hidey-hole in the top corner of a map that you can clip through easily, and a wall that can be rammed through with a jetpack. Luke mentions that he found all of those exploits with a simple YouTube search, and adds, "Why can't the devs fix this themselves?"

The following day, Luke uploaded another video, showing that he was globally banned from Ark servers. "There was no communication with the devs, and no reason given for the ban," he says to me, over email. "I have exposed meshing in the past and was not banned for it, and they still have not taken my feedback from this first video."

H.O.D. Gaming is one of the more prominent YouTube channels in the Ark community. In total, Luke has around 190,000 subscribers, so it was unsurprising to see that his banning emerged as a significant controversy. The news penetrated the front page of the non-denominational r/pcgaming subreddit, where it earned nearly 50,000 upvotes. (Personally, I saw the news on r/all, where it was also on the front page.) Several other Ark YouTubers made videos in response to the ban, and all offered the same tepid analysis of the situation.

Our first instinct is to do whatever is in our power to prevent abuse.

Studio Wildcard

When I reached out to Studio Wildcard, the company behind Ark, they directed me to a statement they made on the forums shortly after the Reddit indignation. In it, they announced that H.O.D. would be formally unbanned, but also didn't fully exonerate Luke's content. "Any issue that violates our Code of Conduct is subject to a fair appeal process. When things land in the gray area, our first instinct is to do whatever is in our power to prevent abuse," it read. "Upon further review of the situation involving H.O.D Gaming, we felt that it was not deserving of a permanent ban. Videos showing exploit techniques are admittedly a gray area when it comes to enforcement, which is just one of the reasons why the appeal process exists for bans."

This is fairly standard for a lot of publishers. You can find plenty of examples of prominent streamers earning bans after taking advantage of an exploit or an oversight. It's happened in PUBG, Overwatch, and most recently in Anthem. The difference for H.O.D. is that he claims the meshing he demonstrated happened in Ark's single-player mode, and also that the overall directive of his video was cached as a form of protest. I asked him what his response would be if Wildcard informed him that achieving exploits, regardless of the overarching context, was a no-questions-asked bannable offense.

These exploits have been in the game for far too long and have becoming widely accepted as a norm.

H.O.D.

"I [would] respond that I deserve the ban for exposing these exploits, but sacrifices have to be made. It's the only way to bring enough attention to them to actually get them fixed," he wrote. These exploits have been in the game for far too long and have becoming widely accepted as a norm."

Wildcard, of course, addressed this guerrilla sentiment in its response, essentially saying that the company would prefer its community to address complaints about exploits more formally, via a troubleshooting report, rather than publicize them on a platform like YouTube. "There are established methods for escalating exploits to the development team that exist to prevent the spread of information to the general public," it read. "The more widely known an exploit is, the more likely it is to be exploited."

Your mileage on this controversy will depend on how effective you think H.O.D. Gaming's protest was, or if you think it introduced a whole new group of people to some of Ark's more fragile invisible walls. One thing is clear though; fixing the exploits would solve all of these problems, all at once. The simplest answer is usually the right one.

HDR on PC continues to be a bit of a mess these days, but provided you haven’t been put off by the astronomical prices of the [cms-block]s for HDR or, indeed, the ongoing debacle surrounding Windows 10 support for it, then the next step on your path to high dynamic range glory is to get an HDR compatible graphics card.

Below, you’ll find a complete list of all the Nvidia and AMD graphics cards that have built-in support for HDR, as well as everything you need to know about getting one that also supports Nvidia and AMD’s own HDR standards, G-Sync HDR and FreeSync 2. I’ve also put together a list of all the PC games that support HDR as well. There aren’t many of them, all told, but I’ll be updating this list with more titles as and when they come out so it’s always up to date.

It's finally arrived! We're beyond thrilled to be releasing Structure Plus (S+) and the long-awaited kibble rework (now packaged together as 'Homestead') to all of our survivors March 5th 2019!

If you can dream it, you can build it! Homestead includes the major elements of Structures Plus (S+), a player created Sponsored Mod by Orionsun. S+ has maintained a large following of users over an extended period of time, and its move to console has long been requested. We are particularly excited to finally be able to share this with our console survivors who will be using it for the very first time.

Here are the new building features included in Homestead:

- Dedicated bulk storage
- Triangle foundations, ceilings and roof pieces
- Four high walls
- Fence supports for level walls
- Flexible pipes and electrical cables
- Double doors
- Swappable variants for ramps/stairs
- New visual variants for existing structures

Along-side the update to structures we also have our kibble rework included in this patch! Previously the Kibble system worked like a tree, the egg of one creature being used in a kibble to tame the next creature in line. Often these kibbles didn’t make sense in terms of game progression and became more redundant with each new creature that was added to the game. Each creature now falls into one of six categories, and that creature’s egg can be used to tame any creature within that specific category. Instead of having 50+ different kibbles all requiring a different specific egg, it is drastically reduced to: Basic, Simple, Regular, Superior, Exceptional, and Extraordinary kibbles!

You can expect the Homestead update to hit your respective platform around 10am PST tomorrow starting with PC and concluding with PS4. We invite you to watch our Homestead trailer to see a preview of the variety of structures that are now possible. All of the builds featured in the trailer are player-created and you can find links to how to build the structures in the video description. It has been an amazing experience for us to see our dedicated players create things we could have never imagined!

We hope these changes to ARK inspire survivors to turn their wooden shack on the beach into the fortress of their dreams!

Mod Community Updates!

We're bringing in two new projects to the Sponsored Mod Program this month, and don't forget that we have already started another round of applications for the sponsored mod program. You'll be able to submit an application until April 5th. So polish up those design documents and send them in. We love seeing the amazing projects everyone is working on.

First up we have Additional Lighting by ReinerSCT. This mod adds a plethora of new lighting options of different colors, styles, and configurations. Ever wanted to make your own disco room, or set up a complex lighting system for your over-the-top castle? This mod will let you do it!

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1380777369
We're also happy to bring in the Play as Dino mod by Finntastic. Does anybody else ever use the old mantra "Don't just hunt the raptor... Be the raptor"? No? Just me? Either way, with this mod you can! The author has a lot of cool systems being worked on for this mod and we're happy to provide some support for them.

Structures Plus (S+) & Kibble Rework Beta Closing!

This week is the final week to participate in the open Structures Plus and Kibble Rework beta before the testing period closes to the public. If you have not tried it out and/or given your feedback regarding the changes we invite you to do so! Please check out the post below for all of the information on how you can get involved in play testing this beta.

Mod Sponsorship Applications Opening!

Get your mods ready, sponsorship program applications open again on Friday! We will also be announcing a couple of new sponsored projects next week!

We're making some adjustments to what has been our focus for sponsored projects. Going forward we will be looking at more small scope projects as well, instead of only the large scope projects like we have been up to this point. A result of this adjustment is that you will begin to see more projects with shorter-term sponsorship's making their way into the program and, by proxy, a somewhat higher rotation rate leading to more opportunities.

We want to encourage everyone, no matter the scale of your projects, to apply for sponsorship during each application period. Even if a project isn't selected during a given application period it helps me to keep a finger on the pulse of everyone that's interested in being sponsored and seeing how your projects and plans develop.
ARK: Survival Evolved - Jen

Currently on-going until February 18th, love will fill the air as we celebrate Valentine's Day!

The ARK will be placed under Cupid's loving spell. With this event, creatures have also been affected by Cupid's spell in the following ways:

- Red, Pink, and White colored wild creatures can be found wandering the ARKs searching for true loves kiss.
- When mating, creatures have a 25% chance to drop an item.  That item has a 50/50 chance to be one of the following:
- Valentines Chocolate: Restores full HP, or knocks 40% off a creatures taming bar.
- Valentines Candy: Gives your tame random dino colors when eaten.

All servers official and unofficial will also experience the following bonuses (auto-activated or can be toggled manually by running ActiveEvent=vday):

- Mate Boosted range increased by 2x
- Mating Speed and Mating Recovery increased by 3x
- Creature Maturing and Egg Incubation speed has been increased by 3x
- Baby Food Consumption has been decreased by 1/3

Survivors also have the opportunity to send out their own customs Valentine's Day card to their loved ones. Head over to http://playark.com/valentines and create your custom card! Be sure to send us a tweet with your image attached and the #MateBoosted, so that over the course of the week we can retweet your loving messages!

Quake II - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Katharine Castle)

With the arrival of the RTX 2060, we now have four [cms-block] cards that can take advantage of the GPU giant’s cool new graphics features, such as their reflection-enhancing ray tracing magic and performance-boosting DLSS tech. But not all games can do both things at the same time, and many more still have no confirmed support for ray tracing and DLSS at all. So I thought I’d do the hard work for you and put everything in a nice, big list, detailing every ray tracing and DLSS game confirmed so far. The list is still quite small at the moment, but if you’re thinking about upgrading to either the RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080 or RTX 2080 Ti, then these are the games that are going to get the most out of them.

Structures Plus (S+) & Kibble Rework Beta!

It is finally here! This is the first time we've done a public beta branch for ARK, so here is a lengthy but necessary introduction.

As a quick starting note: Before accessing a beta branch you should create a backup of any single player games, characters, or server files that you may have for ARK to prevent any corruption or loss of player data from occurring. When you’re done playing with the beta you’ll need to navigate back to the branch selection dialogue and opt-out of the beta (choose NONE). You cannot access your official server while on the beta because they are not the same version. Depending on your internet connection this process could take some time so if you’re doing anything time sensitive on your official server, be cautious of swapping!

How to access the beta:
From your Steam games library, right-click on ARK: Survival Evolved and choose Properties. From this new window you’ll click on BETAS at the top. Here is where you’ll swap between the beta version and the live version of the game.

Choose the beta called qolbeta_public from the drop down list and then close the Properties window once the window says it has successfully accessed the beta. Your Steam client will begin to download the beta (at the time of this post, v290.103).

Depending on your internet connection this process could take some time. You can tell you are successfully on the beta when [qolbeta_public] appears next to ARK: Survival Evolved on your Steam games list.

Providing feedback:
In order for us to effectively analyze feedback from beta users we have set up two separate threads, one for Structures Plus related feedback and one for the Kibble changes. Please use these threads linked below when reporting issues, bugs, and feedback to us.

Feedback about Structures Plus changes:
https://survivetheark.com/index.php?/forums/topic/399606-structure-plus-beta-feedback/

Feedback about Kibble changes:
https://survivetheark.com/index.php?/forums/topic/399609-kibble-rework-beta-feedback/

Please see the first comment under this post for currently known issues. We will be taking your feedback into serious consideration regarding both of these changes. Once we're happy with where these features are at, we will be bringing them over to the PC main game.

Changes on the beta include:

Structures:

- Structure quick pickup time is now configurable in ini file (ServerSettings -> StructurePickupTimeAfterPlacement, default = 30)
- Added new ini config option to ignore the duration and always allow quick pickup (ServerSettings -> AlwaysAllowStructurePickup, default = false)
- Improved quick pickup HUD text to avoid overlapping other text, and duration is now formatted as a timestamp if over 60 seconds to support very long timers.
- Enabled structure quick pickup for ALL structures. For structures that previously had pickup disabled, they now auto-disable quick pickup as soon as the player interacts with the structure in any way (unless AlwaysAllowStructurePickup is set to true)

New structures/variants:

- 'Smooth' sidewall textures variants (like the stone foundation) to the stock square foundations [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Thatch, Wood]
- Triangle foundations [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Triangle ceilings [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood, Greenhouse]
- Triangle roofs [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood, Greenhouse]
- Large (4x height) walls [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Flexible pipe [Stone, Metal]
- Flexible electrical cable
- Stairs (with freely swappable ramp variant) [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Double door frames [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Double doors [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Dedicated storage (Tek structure that allows storing a large amount of a single resource)
- Fence supports (allows you to build fences that are level along the top) [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]

The blueprint paths for the new structures are listed below so you can spawn them in for testing. You can also use creative mode for easier and faster building. With admin enabled you can type cheat gcm into the console (press Tab) to enable creative mode.

Kibble:

All eggs have been assigned a value based on the size and rarity of the egg. These sizes include: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and Special. The eggs are used in a recipe to create kibble of a coinciding value, which are: Basic, Simple, Regular, Superior, Exceptional, and Extraordinary.

The blueprint paths for these new kibbles are listed below so you can spawn them in for testing:

cheat giveitem "Blueprint'/Game/PrimalEarth/CoreBlueprints/Items/Consumables/PrimalItemConsumable_Kibble_Base_Special.PrimalItemConsumable_Kibble_Base_Special'" 10 0 0

The recipes for these new kibbles are as follows:

Basic: 5 Fiber, 5 mejoberries, 10 tintoberries, 10 amarberries, 1 cooked meat, 1 extra small egg
Simple: 5 Fiber, 5 mejoberries, 2 rockarrot, 1 cooked fish, 1 small egg
Regular: 5 Fiber, 2 savoroot, 2 longrass, 1 cooked jerky, 1 medium egg
Superior: 5 Fiber, 2 citronal, 2 rare mushroom, 1 cooked prime, 1 sap, 1 large egg
Exceptional: 5 Fiber, 10 mejoberries, 1 rare flower, 1 focal chili, 1 extra large egg
Extraordinary: 5 Fiber, 10 mejoberries, 1 honey, 1 lazarus chowder, 1 special egg

Regarding previously crafted kibble:

- Old kibbles will not be wiped, and will inherit their new "value/color" appropriately.
- Old kibbles will still work to tame their appropriate creatures.
- Old kibble will no longer be craftable, only the new types will be craftable.

Further notes:
If you have a single player or unofficial save file it is worth loading it up on the beta and checking if there are any obvious bugs or compatibility issues. Your pre-existing structures should see no changes on the beta, and kibble that is already crafted should work as normal. If there are any inconsistencies you notice, please report them to us using the threads linked above so we can address them.

Attention builders!
Fancy yourself a top tier builder? We want to see what you can do with the new structure changes!

Hop into the beta and build to your heart's content using any of our officially supported maps (The Island, The Center, Ragnarok, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction). You can do this in your single player world or your unofficial server if you have access to one. We’ll be picking the best builds submitted to us for featuring in an upcoming video trailer showcasing the building changes to ARK similar to the announcement video we did for our latest mod contest.

Submit pictures and/or a video of your build, your map save and coordinates to your build to arkfans@studiowildcard.com so we can take a look. You can get the direct coordinates to your build location by enabling setcheatplayer true and jotting down the coordinates presented on screen. You can upload your map save to a file sharing website such as Google Drive, Dropbox, etc, and include the link in the email.

Entries are due by February 4th, 2018. We look forward to seeing your masterpieces!

Extinction Transfers Are Open!

Server transfers into our official Extinction servers are now open.
ARK: Survival Evolved - Jen

We're starting off 2019 strong! The promised public beta including S+ and Kibble changes will be available by the end of this week for survivors to play with. When we're ready to share the build we'll give you some more information on how to opt-in to this build through Steam.

S+ Features that will be in the beta branch:

- Made structure quick pickup time configurable in ini file (ServerSettings -> StructurePickupTimeAfterPlacement, default = 30)
- Added new ini config option to ignore the duration and always allow quick pickup (ServerSettings -> AlwaysAllowStructurePickup, default = false)
- Improved quick pickup HUD text to avoid overlapping other text, and to format durations as timestamps if over 60 seconds to support very long times if configured for that
- Enabled structure quick pickup for ALL structures. For structures that previously had pickup disabled, they now auto-disable quick pickup as soon as the player interacts with the structure in any way (unless AlwaysAllowStructurePickup is set to true)

New structures/variants:

- Added 'smooth' sidewall textures variants (like the stone foundation) to the stock square foundations [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Thatch, Wood]
- Triangle foundations [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Triangle ceilings [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood, Greenhouse]
- Triangle roofs [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood, Greenhouse]
- Large (4x height) walls [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Flexible pipe [Stone, Metal]
- Flexible electrical cable
- Stairs (with freely swappable ramp variant) [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Double door frames [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Double doors [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]
- Dedicated storage (Tek structure that allows storing a large amount of a single resource)
- Fence supports (allows you to build fences that are level along the top) [Adobe, Metal, Stone, Tek, Wood]

Kibble changes that will be in the beta branch:

All eggs have been assigned a value based on the size and rarity of the egg. These sizes include: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and Special. The eggs are used in a recipe to create kibble of a coinciding value: Basic, Simple, Regular, Superior, Exceptional, and Extraordinary. This new system will make it so that creature kibble desires are based on the quality levels instead of specific creatures, which should greatly decrease the number of tamed creatures needed for the purposes of taming.

Regarding previously crafted kibble:

- Old kibbles will not be wiped, and will inherit their new "value/color" appropriately.
- Old kibbles will still work to tame their appropriate creatures.
- Old kibble will no longer be craftable, only the new types will be craftable.

We will be taking your feedback into serious consideration regarding both of these changes so we invite you to communicate with us on our social media, the forums, reddit, etc with your opinions and critique. Once we're happy with where these features are at, we will be bringing them over to the PC main game.

Modding Community Updates!

Hello, Modders!

I just wanted to remind everyone that the application for the sponsored mod program is open again. There is still a month to prepare your projects and apply for the program. Remember that these sponsorships are longer-term support, so I want to see what everyone has planned for up to a year of sponsorship time.

Head over here to find the application:
https://survivetheark.com/index.php?/modding/apply-for-sponsorship/

For anyone that isn't familiar with the program, we have a rolling set of community projects for which we provide support to the mod authors. You can check out the current sponsored projects here:

2018 in Review!

Happy New Year, Survivors! Thank you all for making us a part of your 2018. It has truly been an insane year for us. As always we are humbled by your support of all things ARK and we could not have achieved these milestones without you.

Let's bring in the new year with a roar, and keep on surviving in 2019!

Structure Plus & Kibble Rework!

We look forward to being back in the office this week and back to the grind so we can bring you more ARK this year. In case you missed our post about it, two of the main things we are currently working on in the month of January include Structures Plus and the Kibble rework, which you can read about here:

https://steamcommunity.com/gid/103582791438250696/announcements/detail/1698317167857800202

The extra exciting news is that we will be launching a public beta for the next round of S+ implementation and the kibble changes very soon. We will be relying on your feedback and making tweaks and changes during the beta process before these features make their way into the live game for everyone to enjoy. When the beta releases we invite you to break these new features as much as possible! ;)

Extinction Transfers Opening Soon!

We have been getting a lot of questions about this lately and rightfully so. We will be opening server transfers on our official servers into Extinction on January 15th! There will be no transfer restrictions on creatures (unlike Aberration).

Winter Wonderland!

Don't forget that Winter Wonderland is here but it won't be around forever! This winter-themed holiday event ends on January 7th so be sure to get your fill of this festive event before Raptor Claus and Gacha Claus make their way back to the North Pole.
