ARK: Survival Evolved - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

I do enjoy Ark: Survival Evolved‘s process of turning real-world historical(ish) creatures into video game monsters. The abilities of its reinterpreted dinosaurs and critters seem to stem from one question: what would they do in a cartoon? This logic is delightfully evident as developers Studio Wildcard continue to overhaul older beasties with updated art and abilities, turning crocodiles into stepping stones, making a honking dino into an ambulant alarm system, and of course having raptors pounce to pin prey. Anyone who’s seen dinosaur cartoons or movies knows that’s how they work. (more…)

That's it for this update guys! We hope you enjoy the new changes and we can't wait to see your feedback. As mentioned previously, we're targetting a console release for this update in mid-April and will keep you posted about more accurate release dates once we get closer to submitting the patch. We'll need a bit more time to work on Primitive+, it'll have the missing engrams for the DLC as well as the latest Dino TLC content in an upcoming patch!

Now that TLC #2 has been released we will be turning our focus more directly on to bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements for the core game in the weeks ahead. Going forward, we'll be consolidating the patching process on PC. We will be leaning heavily on regular Tuesday (or Wednesday if needed) deployments unless critical fixes require patches outside of that regular patch day. These will become collective weekly bug and quality-of-life patching updates.

Hello everyone, Zen here!

This week I've got something special for the modding community. Remember when I said I was going to start bringing tutorials to the community? Well, that starts today and it's called Wildcard Workshop!

The first video is for completely new modders and those that are interested in starting. Check it out! In the next episode, we start getting into the gritty work with our first mod ;)

https://survivetheark.com/index.php?/forums/topic/316320-wildcard-workshop-1-getting-started/

We've also got another modding tutorial contest! We're going to do something a bit more fun this time and look at a topic that will show an interesting way to make the game look more dynamic by having materials be affected by the time of day in-game! Everyone's favourite early tame, the Parasaur, won't be receiving a visual update but will be receiving some handy ability upgrades to make it more useful for beginner survivors in TLC #2.

The Parasaur has found its voice in the form of a loud vocalization capable of notifying the player of surrounding danger and is even able to scare away smaller creatures when doing so. The call can be separated into the same categories as other creatures with a type of "turret mode" as well as the call can be done on command by the player, just like a roar.

Have issues with annoying Pegomastax or Ichthyornis stealing from you constantly while you're just trying to stroll down the beach? Got a Raptor pack hot on your heels? Have a Parasaur tag along with you and when of these pesky critters gets too close, your Parasaur will keep them at bay.

While riding your Parasaur, the Parasaur can send out a kind of echolocation that gives the player notice of where enemy players, tames, and wild dangers are around them, even when they are in line-of-sight. In combination these abilities make the Parasaur a very strong ally during those early days on the beach and ongoing. They are able to alert survivors when someone is trying to sneak into their base by acting like a living tripwire alarm!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKf5GiSgSW4
On top of these new abilities the Parasaur will also have increased base carry weight which will allow it to carry even more of your belongings as you explore the Island and try to find your way around the ARK, and the ability to attack while running which it previously was not able to do.

Here are some other in-game images of what you can expect next week!

What's Coming Next?

Now that we've shared the changes to the Parasaur that wraps up what is coming in TLC #2. The patch includes the Sarco, Spino, Argent, Raptor, Trike, and Parasaur, and is looking on schedule to go out early next week with a console release planned for mid-April. We will keep console players updated about more accurate release dates as we get closer to submitting patches.

Going forward, Wildcard is will be consolidating our patching process on PC. We will be leaning heavily on regular Tuesday (or Wednesday if needed) deployments unless critical fixes require patches outside of that regular patch day. These will become collective weekly bug patching updates rather than separate updates for each bug fix that in the past resulted in multiple patches a week.

After TLC #2 is released we will also be turning our focus more directly on to bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements in the weeks ahead. There are some issues that have been brought to the attention of the team by an artistic movement created to highlight the issues that affect players negatively the most. In tandem with development on TLC #2 these issues have been documented for future analysis, and after TLC #2 is released we will begin investigating and addressing these issues as one of our main focuses.

This week we'll be previewing the latest TLC of one of our oldest friend, here is everyone's favourite early tame, the Triceratops!

The Triceratops, one of our oldest friends and earliest creatures implemented into the game will be receiving both a gameplay update and visual update including facial changes plus a reskin. Generally, in terms of gameplay, we felt that the Trike was in a relatively good place in regards to how much benefit in provided vs how difficult it was to obtain. As an early game herbivore, we didn't want to do a complete redesign however it was clear to us that there were some very obvious changes we needed to make.

First of all, the Triceratops will receive the ability to perform a charge and ram attack! It has a short-wind up time to notify that the trike is preparing to charge, the attack will build speed and damage during the windup, which then transfers to increased damage and ends in a ram attack which will knock targets back and can leave them stunned for a short period of time.

Additionally, its herding instincts will be improved, resulting in two changes. A 'Rivalry Buff' which will be applied to all nearby ally Triceratops when in range of large therapods and carnivores that will increase their stats/dmg akin to Mate Boost. It will also increase the wild Triceratops' aggro notify range by twice so that other Trikes are more likely to come to its aid.

Introducing Zen Rowe!

Zen Rowe will be joining our Community Team as the Mod Community Manager! Here's what he had to say:

Hello, Everyone!

Allow me to introduce myself, My name is Josh, but some of you may know me as Zen Rowe. I have been a part of the modding community for over two years now and have been heavily involved with the discord especially. I had the pleasure of helping new people in the community learn how to use the ARK Dev Kit and watched them build out their ideas for mods, just as some did for me when I started out. For the last several months I have been sponsored for one of my projects, ArkFrame, which focused on enhancing the mods made by others and supporting interaction between mods.

Today, I am excited to become your new Mod Community Manager. My objective is to bring more consistent communication with the community and help mod authors build the quality of their projects even further. I will also be leading the sponsored modding team and be providing support for their projects.

We already have some changes planned for the mod community that will be coming soon. Every other week, as part of the community crunch, I will be doing mod spotlights and giving tips, tutorials, and best practices. We are also going to start hosting a Mod Tutorial Contest every other week. As a community, I believe we can embolden and encourage each other to make ARK even better, and I will be an active presence in the multiple areas of the modding community (UE4 forums, Discord, Steam forums). I look forward to working with you all and for our first bit of exciting news, let's begin with the Modding Tutorial Contest!

The goal of this contest is to encourage mod authors to share knowledge and increase the skill level and understanding of mod authors that are new or trying to acquire new skills.

I look forward to working with you all and for our first bit of exciting news, let's begin with the Modding Tutorial Contest!

The goal of this contest is to encourage mod authors to share knowledge and increase the skill level and understanding of mod authors that are new or trying to acquire new skills.

ARK: Survival Evolved - Jen
Last week we showed you a preview of the updated Sarcosuchus coming in TLC 2 next month. Today we have another special treat to share: the Raptor!

The Raptor is one of the most iconic creatures in ARK. Our goal with the Raptor is to keep it an essential early game tame and retain its usefulness to low level or new Survivors for traversing and battling on the ARK. The Raptor will continue to be an excellent scouting dino with its quick speed and high mobility, however it will now also receive a small pack bonus! The Pack Leader will be able to do a special vocalization that increases the packs damage resistance, movement speed, and attack speed for 15 seconds with a 45 second cooldown. This will allow a group of Raptors to stalk and pursue quick targets and quickly take them down.

The Raptor will also have a pounce ability that allows it to jump and pin down players and smaller creatures. Once pounced upon, the Raptor can use its bite attack to quickly kill its prey. Survivors on foot better be on the lookout for Raptors that may be stalking them through the trees!
