ARK Digest

Hey Survivors!

Welcome to the sixteenth issue of the ARK Digest! For those who missed the previous issues, check out the Announcement forum section on the Steam Community Hub and be sure to catch up with what you’ve missed as there is tons for you to catch up on!

State of the Game - Megathread

Earlier this week we created a mega thread in the general discussion section of the boards. This will be used as a focal-point to inform you of on-going situations with ARK, generally unrelated to its development but more so other aspects of the game. This is a thread you guys will want to look out for as it may mention key issues such as server downtime, server relocations, the introduction of new regions, as well as anything else we want to bring to your attention - we’ll be updating it frequently. It’ll also help keep our boards a little cleaner.

State of the Game

Game Moderator

We’re excited to be introducing Nubsly as our Head Game Moderator! He’s been an active part of the team thus far in monitoring the servers, the forums, bringing concerns to our attention and funneling reports to the right places. From today, he’s going to be leading the efforts across ARKs looking out for cheaters, and publicly banishing them from the game and dealing with the oversight of servers.

We’re coming for you cheaters!

Community Crunch Contests: Patch 207 and above!

Patch 207 introduced many first-pass features into the game, such as Warpaint for both Dinos and Survivors, Mobile-Bronto bases and Rafts! A lot of this is still being worked on daily to be improved based on the feedback we receive and the bugs you report (love you guys!), so it’ll get a lot better!

However we’re also excited to see the new-level of gameplay this introduces to our creative-friends! The Community Crunch runs two weekly contests, #ARKitect and #ARKArt! The former being related to the structures you guys build and the latter regarding what you paint!

With the new additions to the game, we have opened up entries for warpaint images, human and dino tattoos/bodyart for the #ARKArt award as well as bases both on your Brontos and Rafts for #ARKitect!

We can’t wait to see the platform bases, the ships and tattoos/bodyart! So if you haven’t submitted something but want to show off what you’ve made, you can do so here!

Community Crunch Contests

Remember that these run every week and the winners are going to be posted in Thursday’s Community Crunch! So if you want a shot at the cash prize, be sure to enter! :)

Good luck!

ARK Digest Q&A

This will just be a regular sized Q&A for now guys, a lot of time is being spent on working on the reports you’ve made regarding the current build, as well as prepping for the next one - however when we have some more time available we will go through the threads again to pick up on the questions we missed!

You can check out the Full Digest here.

ARK: Survival Evolved

A week ago, the team behind Ark: Survival Evolved said that updates to the game would slow as it neared release, but the pace doesn't seem to have changed much since then. Since I brought you news of poop-throwing monkeys less than a fortnight ago, six new creatures have been announced.

First up is the Megaloceros, a name I only recognised because it got an episode all to itself in a 2001 Channel 4 TV show called Extinct. Megaloceros is also known as the Irish Elk or Giant Elk. It's basically a really, really big deer that went extinct because of a combination of climate change and overhunting by early man.

Next is the Therizinosaur, a dinosaur whose name means "scythe lizard". Only incomplete fossils have ever been found, so the developers have had to apply some creative license, but we know it had these huge claws. The team's description labels the dinosaur a "versatile harvester".

Eurypterids are described as "poisonous aquatic adaptable arthropods". People call them sea scorpions but only some of them lived in the sea and they weren't technically scorpions. These things ruled the ocean back in their day, which fortunately was hundreds of millions of years ago.

I think the Pachycephalosaurus is kind of cute in its own way, which is probably helped by the fact that they were probably only about 4.5 metres long and not carnivorous. In the game, they're easy to tame and can charge at opponents. And this video has people riding around on them, which looks much more exciting than horseback:

The Arthropluera is a terrifying prospect: a millipede that could have been more than 2 metres long. In popular entertainment the Arthropleura's starring moment arrived in an episode of Walking with Monsters, in which it chases a spider but later dies. Will a similar fate await the noble mega-millipede in Ark? Apparently the Arthropleura was a herbivore, though in Ark it's an "aggressive acidic blood-spitting arthropod".

Then there's Kairuku, which is apparently a "cute and friendly penguin", so pretty different from the rest of the creatures described above. According to the text on the image, they might not be any good in a fight but they can keep you warm.

Ark lets you tame and train your own dinosaurs. You can read about Chris L's adventures trying to do just that in our Ark: Survival Evolved diary.

I’m fascinated by the process of bringing real things into video game systems, deciding how to classify them, which characteristics to represent, how they’ll work, and how to make them distinct. The complex stats and balancing of virtual guns is perhaps the most obvious example, because video games, but I do enjoy seeing Ark: Survival Evolved [official site] do the same with prehistoric creatures.

Consider the thick-skulled Pachycephalosaurus, which scientists have theorised was into head-butting. Aye, but isn’t that only a fancy attack animation for just another bipedal dinosaur? Right. Well. Let’s game this up: they also have a ‘charge’ attack to even smash through buildings. Ah! Now that’s a gamification I can get behind.

Spotlight: Pachycephalosaurus!

Wild Pachycephalosaurus is a bit of a conundrum. It is a very passive (even friendly) herbivore, common to much of the Island. At the same time, it is one of the most dangerous herbivores that you could encounter.

The rather svelte Pachy is fairly nimble creature and easy-to-tame herbivore, with a singularly exceptional ability: it can execute a “charge” attack that rapidly builds speed, and the harder it hits anything with its bone-plated spiked skull, the more “torpor”-inducing damage it causes. It can even charge straight through structures with this powerful attack, making it a one-of-a-kind creature for quickly causing a KO on your enemies!

Also in today’s ARK “v207” update, among many new features, Studio Wildcard has added a Raft to explore the oceans & live a life at sea, and a massive new system for building structures on top of large platforms including mobile Bronto bases, providing Tribes with tremendous new tactical possibilities!
