ARK: Survival Evolved - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

I’m fascinated by the process of bringing real things into video game systems, deciding how to classify them, which characteristics to represent, how they’ll work, and how to make them distinct. The complex stats and balancing of virtual guns is perhaps the most obvious example, because video games, but I do enjoy seeing Ark: Survival Evolved [official site] do the same with prehistoric creatures.

Consider the thick-skulled Pachycephalosaurus, which scientists have theorised was into head-butting. Aye, but isn’t that only a fancy attack animation for just another bipedal dinosaur? Right. Well. Let’s game this up: they also have a ‘charge’ attack to even smash through buildings. Ah! Now that’s a gamification I can get behind.

Spotlight: Pachycephalosaurus!

Wild Pachycephalosaurus is a bit of a conundrum. It is a very passive (even friendly) herbivore, common to much of the Island. At the same time, it is one of the most dangerous herbivores that you could encounter.

The rather svelte Pachy is fairly nimble creature and easy-to-tame herbivore, with a singularly exceptional ability: it can execute a “charge” attack that rapidly builds speed, and the harder it hits anything with its bone-plated spiked skull, the more “torpor”-inducing damage it causes. It can even charge straight through structures with this powerful attack, making it a one-of-a-kind creature for quickly causing a KO on your enemies!

Also in today’s ARK “v207” update, among many new features, Studio Wildcard has added a Raft to explore the oceans & live a life at sea, and a massive new system for building structures on top of large platforms including mobile Bronto bases, providing Tribes with tremendous new tactical possibilities!

ARK Digest

Hey Survivors!

Welcome to the fifteenth issue of the ARK Digest! For those who missed the previous issues, check out the Announcement forum section on the Steam Community Hub and be sure to catch up with what you’ve missed as there is tons for you to catch up on!

We know it’s been a little while since you’ve read one of these and we’re terribly sorry about that, things have been very exciting at Studio Wildcard the past two weeks what with our latest additions, tournaments and events, however the team have taken their Rockwell concoctions and are feeling much better and ready to get back into full swing of things!

We’ve got a lot in store for you across the coming weeks so stay tuned for some big announcements and be sure to keep an eye out on the patch-notes so you can see what to expect!

Survival of the Fittest: Unnatural Selection

Last week we held the finale to our marathon-style tournament of a specialized Survival of the Fittest mode, which featured some gameplay modifications and introduced the Dragon! The entire tournament was a blast to watch and we saw a wide range of tactics and strategy being deployed by contestants throughout the preliminaries and in the finals itself.

As a studio we learn a lot from these events as it helps us to pinpoint areas of the game we can look into and also see what players are enjoying in the moment and we’re very grateful to all of you who entered the tournament from the preliminaries to the final contestants, as well as those of you who tuned in to watch and support your favourites go for gold!

The tournament definitely had an interesting ending, with a surprising winner! You can read more about the event and finale here and be sure to check out the VOD if you haven’t already!

As we head into September, we want to tell all of our Survival of the Fittest players that they should get ready for the ultimate challenge, “The Last Stand”! This Epic event will test the mettle of the most hardened competitive Tribes out there, and a certain megalithic gorilla will be making their grand appearance. Expect more details very soon ;)!

ARK Digest Q&A!

This will be an extended Q&A catching up on a lot of the questions you guys have asked over the past two-weeks! Hopefully you’ll find this very insightful and thank you for being so patient <3.

ARK: Survival Evolved

As indie survival games go, Ark: Survival Evolved has done pretty well for itself, especially since it's still an Early Access game. Co-Creative Director Jesse Rapczak told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that he attributes much of its success to Studio Wildcard's aggressive approach to updates, saying, "We're always adding new content and the community always has new stuff to do." But he also warned that the frequency of updates will be reduced as the game approaches a full release.

"Our pace of updates will slow down a lot as we get towards release, as we don t want to be iterating on new stuff as we try to polish the game," Rapczak said. "We ll see a slowdown. We have a target around the beginning of next year to start locking down and doing a formal alpha and beta period with the game, so that we can ship and really open up our options for release. We don t want it to be one day we release, and we just turn a switch and people are like, Wait a minute! We want there to be a definite exit to early access and then release a very polished game."

He also said that Studio Wildcard will soon begin work on a full expansion with "lots of extra gameplay hours and story extensions," which it hopes to have ready a few months after Ark launches. The studio may try an Early Access release of the expansion as well, "because we get so much out of that with the back and forth with the community."

Ark: Survival Evolved doesn't have a proper release date yet, but it does have weaponized monkeys that throw poop.
