Frostpunk - Rufus Blackwood

Greetings, Citizens!

Our community asked and we have listened. We are very excited to confirm that Frostpunk, the first of its kind in strategic gaming is officially coming to consoles. A gritty simulation of society survival in a frozen post-apocalypse, the Bafta-nominated Frostpunk was a bestseller of 2018 and multiple award winner in its genre. Frostpunk: Console Edition is a finely tuned adaptation of the PC hit that will be making its way to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year.

Offering players a complex strategic challenge alongside a rich narrative featuring an alternative take on the 19th-century industrial revolution, Frostpunk weaves a story of how our planet mysteriously freezes, putting an end to civilization as we know it and forcing the human race to adapt to the harsh conditions. As the leader of possibly the last civilized society on Earth, you’re going to build the city your survivors live in, discover new technologies, explore frozen wastelands and most importantly, manage and rule society to prepare it for life in an unforgiving world. Whether you’re an enlightened ruler or an iron-fisted tyrant, you’ll discover choices in this world aren’t as easy as they seem, and that holding power over people has a cost as heavy as the responsibility you feel in caring for them.

Focusing on a smooth transition to consoles, great efforts are being taken to re-design the game and adjust its mechanics for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, especially when it comes to controls. 11 bit studios still have some work to do but are close to the finish line, creating an intuitive interface allowing gameplay to feel natural even when playing with a controller. “We don’t want to reveal the exact release date yet, but I can say that the game should be out in the summer,” says lead designer Kuba Stokalski.

My people are fed, my homes are warm, my resources are abundant, and my generator is purring like a well-fed cat. For the first time in Frostpunk, things aren t looking so bleak.

It s a strange feeling. Typically by this point in 11-Bit Studios icebound strategy game, I ve lost half my populace to sickness and the other half are so ravaged by frostbite that I can split a pack of socks between six families. But playing on the game s new Endless Mode s Serenity variant, I ve finally got the time, space, and resources I never had before to build a city designed for more than just survival.

Dear Citizens!

There has been an unpleasant situation: an irritating bug found last-minute in the code of Frostpunk for Mac OS X. We are heavily focused now on detecting the bug and fixing it. As soon as it happens, the game is going to be ready for Mac computers. It is important to stress out that we want to deliver a highly polished Mac version, instead of rushing out to give you a game that could frustrate you with crashes or framerate drops.

We are fully aware that we've promised the exact release date and it hurts us deeply not to be able to deliver. However, we believe that sacrificing the quality of the game serves no one. Thank you for supporting us so far, for being the best community out there. We hope you can understand the situation and support us once more, during this never-ending Winter.

Thank you,
11 bit studios

Hello there, Citizens!

Sometimes, when our engineers are tinkering with the Generator - things go *Boom!*. But thanks to your commitment and feedback we are usually able to track down many issues quickly - and solve them as soon as we can! Thanks for being vigilant, Citizens!

The biggest issue that you've reported and we decided to give it the highest priority is the Blocked Buildings Bug™. This whole thing was correlated to the save files. Luckily, we have been able to address the problem. Here is a breakdown of how things are working:
  • Saves from version 1.3.2 or earlier on which no storm has been triggered yet: your game will progress in a normal manner, the bug will not be present at all;
  • Save from version 1.3.3 created during a storm: the bug will not be present after the hotfix has been applied, you can just carry on;
  • Save from version 1.3.3 created after the storm (Beacon, Hothouse, Hunter's hut, etc. are inoperable): the normal operation of the facilities is going to be restored after next storm passes. In other words, you just need to survive.

Hello there, Citizens!

After months of waiting, and hundreds of emails asking about it, we can finally deliver the good news. Hear me, hear me - Frostpunk will be released on Mac OS on 13th of February this year! The game will be available worldwide, with the price at 29.99 USD / 32.99 EUR. Any media outlet willing to try it out already is more than welcomed to contact us and we will grant the access.

Bringing the game to a new platform doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about our old friends and fans owning PCs. For them, we have prepared a brand new patch 1.3.3, which brings a lot of new things to the game, including Photo Mode. What is it? Well, basically now you can document your triumph over the winter, and show it to your friends. This new tool has everything you need to take stunning photos of your city and includes a choice of graphic effects to transform the picture. What’s more, from now on the weather in Endless Mode will be randomized, making each playthrough a unique experience. Find the detailed list of new features and changes below.

A Photo Mode lets you:
  • Add some vignette and monochrome effects
  • Add soot and ice effects
  • Enable an ornamental frame
  • Add Frostpunk's logo and additional caption
  • Zoom in and out more than it is possible during gameplay
Full list of features:
  • Photo Mode added
  • New languages added: Italian, Japanese and Korean
  • New building: Large Resource Depot
  • Randomized weather in Endless Mode
  • A new look of Resource Depots
  • Christmas Carol story is no longer available
  • Other minor fixes and improvements

Fixes and smaller changes:
  • Some translation fixes for all languages
  • Fixed bug with levitating site markers
  • Added missing texts after loading saves from 1.0.1 version
  • Some translation fixes for the Chinese language
  • Changed text formatting for the Chinese language
  • Fixed lightning issues
  • Additional minor fixes and optimizations
  • Smaller changes and balancing

Frostpunk from 11 bit studios claims our next GOTY award. Find the complete set of them throughout December in our GOTY hub.

Chris: At first it appears to be a beautiful steampunk building management game with survival elements. Construct a city around a massive coal-powered generator in a frozen crater, and keep your citizens warm, fed, and healthy. But it's the simulation of a desperate and fickle society, as well as your role as a leader, that makes Frostpunk such a challenging and unforgettable experience. You're periodically called on to pass laws, and each law comes with a compromise, the significance of which isn't entirely apparent until further down the line.

When hungry citizens begin stealing food from your storehouse, it feels perfectly natural to begin a neighborhood watch program to keep an eye on everyone. But with its first few decisions Frostpunk is just grooming you, testing your morals, seeing how far you'll go in the name of saving lives. Later laws can allow you to build guard towers, form a patrolling militia, and eventually you might be spreading propaganda, having people sign loyalty oaths, and even having your band of enforcers perform public executions, all in the name of keeping your city safe and orderly, or at least convincing your citizens that you are in control. The appearance of order gives them hope, and the more tightly you close your iron fist, the more hope they have. By the end of the game you may wind up feeling you've only done what was necessary to save lives, but at the same time you may feel more like a monster than a savior.

Fraser: All of the miserable, freezing people huddled around the city’s few heat sources thought that the perpetual winter was going to be the end of them, but actually it was me. I set aside empathy for a practical attitude, which is a nice way of saying that I made kids work in the mines. Frostpunk’s a strange survival management game in that surviving might not really be worth it, at least not for your poor citizens. Where other survival games use resource scarcity to push players to take risks and venture out further from the base, Frostpunk uses it to force players to make decisions about what kind of society they’re building at the end of the world. And mine was just awful. Survival still ultimately comes down to numbers—population, food stores, temperature—but the methods used to maintain those things are vastly more interesting than ‘build this thing’.

Jody: Each time you finish one of Frostpunk's campaigns you get to see a time lapse of your settlement's life, pushing back against the ice as it expands. While that happens you're reminded of all the sacrifices that were necessary to make it possible—the scouts who died in the snow, overworked miners who had limbs amputated, the people who suffered under the draconian laws you passed out of necessity—and the cost of survival hits you. After all those hours of howling wind and sheets of ice, that was when Frostpunk finally succeeded at making me feel cold.

We ask the tough questions here at RPS. We re like Jeremy Paxman but in a very long bear costume. We once asked 15 developers what they d do if they were stuck in a room with a clone of themselves. This is important stuff.

Today, we ask another question: What would you gift the games industry for the holidays? We put this query to a bunch of game artists, writers and designers to see how charitable they were feeling. Today, you get to open these presents. Happy holidays!
