We’re just about halfway through 2018 (which has somehow taken both too long and no time at all). As is tradition, we’ve shaken our our brains around to see which games from the last six months still make our neurons fizzle with delight. Then we wrote about them here, in this big list feature that you’re reading right now this second.

And what games they are! 2018 has been a great year so far, and our top picks run the whole range, from hand drawn oddities made by one person, to big mega-studio blockbusters that took the work of hundreds. And each of them is special to us in some way. Just like you are too. Click through the arrows to see the full spread of our faves so far. Better luck next year to the games that didn’t make the cut this time.

surviving-mars-review

That big shop on the internet, Amazon, has been selling pirated copies of PC games, some do-gooders have discovered (or rather, sellers using Amazon as a storefront have been selling the pirate goods). The dodgy games include icy societal survival game Frostpunk and dusty martian city-builder Surviving Mars, which were being sold for the suspiciously cheapo prices of $3 and $4. If you bought one of these games, you got an illegitimate installer to download, which contained some files ripped from GOG store versions of the games. Oh no. (more…)

biggest-steam-games-2018

We’ve just passed the half-way point of 2018, so Ian Gatekeeper and all his fabulously wealthy chums over at Valve have revealed which hundred games have sold best on Steam over the past six months. It’s a list dominated by pre-2018 names, to be frank, a great many of which you’ll be expected, but there are a few surprises in there.

2018 releases Jurassic World Evolution, Far Cry 5 Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Warhammer: Vermintide II are wearing some spectacular money-hats, for example, while the relatively lesser-known likes of Raft, Eco and Deep Rock Galactic have made themselves heard above the din of triple-A marketing budgets. best-management

Base-building is de rigueur these days, what with all those survival games, Minecraft, Fallout 4 and now Fortnite, but before all that we had tiny top-down or isometric worlds in which we diligently built cities and dungeons and theme parks and rail networks. The central appeal of management games was and is that they give us an idealised sense of what it is like to create a game – to weave new worlds upon our screens, guided only by our imaginations, ingenuity and the limitations of the in-game taxation system. Magic, right there: the birth of your own universe.

For a while there, it looked as though the management flame was fading, choked by the low-grade tycoon games that littered supermarkets’ dusty games shelves. But this is The New Age Of PC Games, which means every near-abandoned idea of yesteryear has been revisited in thoughtful and ambitious new ways. Town sims and theme sims are now healthier and more vibrant than they’ve ever been, expanding. This round-up comprises the very best of the past and the very best of today: the twenty management games which are, by 2018 standards, most guaranteed to to consume your every waking thought.

These aren’t in any particular order, by-the-by: they are, simply, the 20 best management games. (more…)

Hello there, Citizens!

We bring you another update based on your suggestions! A lot of you tried Frostpunk on the Survivor Mode and succeeded (congrats!). Some of you, however, wanted to play the game on this really hard difficulty – but with the option to pause the game and use the save slots as you would in a regular playthrough. We decided to give you this option – so now you can customize your difficulty settings even more!

- - - FULL CHANGE LOG - - -

New features:
  • We’ve added Extreme Difficulty level based on Survivor Mode - now you can play every scenario on the hardest difficulty without the need to turn on the Survivor Mode – so you still have the option to pause the game and save it normally.
Smaller changes and balancing:
  • Removed unfinished Workshop models, thus fixing possible glitches and crashes
Fixes:
  • Fixed crash in the Economy Panel
  • Fixed visual glitch in settings menu
  • Fixed and enabled Ansel in the Survivor Mode
  • Minor fixes in translations

The City Must Survive!
Frostpunk

For the iron-willed survivalists among you who think that Frostpunk's "hard" mode is too damn easy, today's 1.10 update introduces the new Survivor Mode promised last month. The mode, which I assume is named ironically, ratchets up the challenge by eliminating the ability to pause the game unless you open a menu, and only saving progress when you exit.

The core difficulty is also cranked up in Survivor Mode: Developer 11 Bit Studios didn't get into the details but said that "meeting the people's needs or balancing the delicate economy of your city will be even harder." The good news is that all the innocent people who will inevitably suffer slow, grim deaths because of your insistence on playing this way won't have died in vain, thanks to the addition of new Survivor Mode achievements.

On the technical side of things, Frostpunk now supports Nvidia's Ansel, which enables—among other things—"super cool high-resolution screenshots like this one." (That's 12672 × 6432, by the way.) There's also a new quicksave/quickload option (F5 and F9 by default), and multiple other changes and fixes that you can dive into below. And if you haven't already picked it up, Frostpunk is also currently on sale on Steam for 15 percent off, taking it to $26/£21/€26 until June 21. Read the patch notes below.

 Smaller changes and balancing:

  • Constructed streets now more easily connect to already existing street net
  • Rebalanced amount of starting resources and resources on frostland for Refugees and The Arks scenarios in easy and hard difficulty setting
  • Hunters will now have to rest for a few hours after coming back from the hunt. It will no longer be possible to send them to other work immediately
  • Added blocking other panels by in-game menu Changed extraction rate value for all pickable resources - replaced potential value with all employees by actual value based on efficiency
  • It is now possible to bind keyboard shortcuts to “Fast speed” and “Very fast speed” commands
  • Increased precision of the gathered Steam Cores amount to 2 digits after comma
  • Added emergency shift trackers to pickable resources

 Fixes:

  • Fixed certain endlog variations that didn’t display properly when Cannibalism law was passed
  • Fixed overlapping trackers on frostland (sites, expeditions, transports, survivors)
  • Fixed missing recurring consequences of Emergency Shifts. Watch out when you exert your workforce!
  • Fixed showing tutorials after loading save
  • Fixed a bug causing snow caps to accumulate on buildings that were just built inside heat zone
  • Fixed scrollbars in all expedition building selection panels
  • Fixed some translations
  • Fixed many UI show/hide animations
  • Fixed closing notifications on pause
  • Enabled notifications visibility on Frostland
  • Fixed queuing unlocked resources on resource bar
  • Fixed texts serializations - all texts will be in current language, even after changing language in main menu and loading save
  • Fixed calculating average discontent for expeditions
  • Fixed states (selected, pressed) for many buttons in selection panel
  • Fixed current research description text on workshop selection panel
  • Fixed displaying prohibited citizen groups on population panel
  • Fixed disabled people outside care house count
  • Fixed two crashes that occurred in rare circumstances
  • Fixed a bug causing upgraded buildings to overlap adjacent streets

Frostpunk

Okay, which of you asked for this? Survival-management game Frostpunk was already bad enough, turning innocent and mild-mannered RPS writers into tyrannical despots desperate to eke out just one more day in the frozen apocalyptic wastes. Today’s update threatens to push them over the edge with a new difficulty level – Survivor Mode – for those who figured even Hard was too forgiving. The new mode removes active pause mode, and limits you to a single rolling save slot. In short, it’s Ironman mode, and they’ve not solved the icing problem.

Hello there, Citizens!

Remember the Development Road Map that we've posted some time ago? The time has come to introduce the promised Survivor Mode to the game! It's a special feature for the most seasoned arctic survivalists among you. If you find Hard difficulty all too easy, test the limits of your ability to survive the winter apocalypse in this brand new mode! You can pause the game only by opening a menu - so there is no active pause whatsoever! - and your progress is only saved automatically and on exit, so all your decisions are final. The difficulty level itself is also more rough and demanding - meeting the people's needs or balancing the delicate economy of your city will be even harder. What's more: finishing the game in this mode will reward you with some new achievements as well. To start a new game in Survivor Mode, select a scenario and toggle the switch below the customization button.

On top of that, we believe it's a good idea to celebrate the update with something really special. That's why we have prepared a discount for you!

What is Ansel?
Ansel is a revolutionary new way to capture in-game shots and view in 360. Compose your screenshots from any position, adjust them with post-process filters, capture HDR images in high-fidelity formats, and share them in 360 degrees using your mobile phone, PC, or VR headset. That's the theory. In practice, this tool allows you - among other things - to take super cool, high resolution screenshots like this one.You can learn more about Ansel on the official website!

(Note: Ansel is available for Steam and GOG.com versions only).

Frostpunk

I loved Frostpunk (read my review if you like) but it was a bit thin, so 11 bit Studios revealing the downloadable content coming this year is very welcome news. Better yet, it will all be free.

The biggest addition will be a whole new scenario - a bespoke, storied campaign. Currently Frostpunk has two - Ark and Refugees - in addition to the game's main story. The third and new scenario will be called The Builders, and that's all we know.

"This is the most substantial update for 2018," said 11 bit Studios in a Frostpunk Steam update. "A brand new scenario with its own story and challenge. We won't spoil anything at all at the moment but let's just say you should stay excited."

Frostpunk

Frostpunk's good, ain't it? Chris called it a grim and engrossing city-builder in his review, and I was already engrossed after talking to developer 11 Bit Studios earlier this year. Today, 11 Bit announced a slew of free content which will be added to the frosty society sim throughout the year, starting with a tough new survivor mode arriving next month. Frostpunk is plenty hard already, so I shudder to think what challenges survivor mode's "new, special modifiers" will bring.

Additionally, another mode called 'endurance' is in the works. 11 Bit describes endurance mode as a direct response to mounting demand for an endless or sandbox mode, but in a Steam blog post, the studio said "it's gonna be our distinctive take on this feature." A new scenario called The Builders, said to be "the most substantial update for 2018," is also on its way, but 11 Bit is keeping details close to its chest for now.

Outside of new modes and challenges, a few quality of life features are planned for the year. Customization options for citizens, both human and automaton, are perhaps the most interesting. It will just be names at first but more options are planned for the future, and as Chris said in his review, anything that helps you connect with your citizens is a plus.

Finally, a photo mode will let you capture better shots of Frostpunk's gorgeous wintry landscapes. Smaller patches loaded with tweaks and fixes will arrive between these more sizable updates, and 11 Bit says new content will continue to roll out well into 2019.
