Worlds Adrift - Bossa Julia

The Unity/Improbable storm rages on, and we find ourselves at the centre of its maelstrom. But with such seasoned captains at the helm, it’s safe to say the hull is intact, and we plan to remain very much afloat.

As we continue to await the storm’s passing, please read the blog post below for more information...

  • Newly learned schematics will have the correct amount of unlocked cipher slots.

    • The black spinning circle will appear less frequently

Greetings Travellers,

First of all, a massive thank you for all the lovely messages of support, yesterday has been a roller-coaster for everyone involved, but as we stated last night we are sailing strong and you are our priority.

As you may have also heard, there was talk of a hotfix this week (or figured out from last week’s Captain’s Log, we were working on it), that was fortunately the only thing that got pushed back a little as our focus was momentarily taken away with working on keeping the game up. You will be getting the widely requested hotfix next week which includes improvements to sailing and voice chat. Small but mighty - stay tuned!

What have the devs worked on this week:
  • Ship blueprint saving design
  • Tweaking climbing and Rhegus Greaves speed
  • A couple of speculative design docs for some QoL features
  • Signing off Hotfix 4 and prepping for the next update
  • Working on new ship cosmetics
  • New clothes cosmetics
  • General bugfixing
  • Message size optimizations
  • Player logout flow refactoring (on going)
  • Minor bugfixing with Worlds Adrift REST server (backend)

See you in the skies,

Greetings Travellers,

Happy New Year and welcome back to your favourite Friday blog post!

Have you had a good holiday? Have you travelled far and wide?

At least to the neighbouring island? Good! If not - Worlds Adrift can help you to work on that New Year’s Resolution to travel more.

Bossians are slowly creeping back into work and the team is picking up their work on improving your favourite game. As pledged in the pre-holiday post by Captain Sylvain (can be read here), we’re not only committed to hearing out and responding to your feedback, but to also act on it. We ended the year on hotfixes to update 29 addressing the most pressing issues, and you might have been able to experience a smoother flying experience on the PTS. We are starting the new year by working on delivering this hotfix (29.4) to the live servers. So, that will keep us busy to start the year off!

It’s only 4 days into 2019, and there’s loads on everybody’s to-do lists, but the real question is...

What have the devs been working on this week?
  • Ship deterioration visuals, getting them working again!
  • Fixing small issues with Hotfix 4.
  • Local testing and building Update 30.
  • Planning overheat stuff for the future. With the first implementation we worked out a formula that felt roughly right but it's tough to balance it to have the outcomes that feel right, so the idea is we're starting with the outcomes that we want and working out how to achieve that with the maths afterwards. We want overheat to be a mechanic that you can master to give yourself an advantage rather than a hindrance.
  • Merging some technical debt branches that have been hanging around.
  • Testing ship view distance changes.
  • Finding a solution for Mantas causing ships to flip out sometimes.
  • Fixing cipher slot not unlocking.
  • Maintenance process polishing.
  • Testing Hotfix 4 content and prepping it for sign off!
Love, and see you in the skies,

Julia & WA Team

Greetings Travellers,

It’s that time of year when we can finally look back and reflect on all our hard work, and consider some of the amazing accomplishments we’ve achieved over the last twelve months. Suffice to say, what a year it’s been for both Worlds Adrift and you, our community!

Together, we’ve braved some turbulent skies, often having to hold fast to our grapple hooks, but somehow we’ve survived! And while the journey’s not nearly over, despite the fact we’ve covered some momentous milestones, we can safely say that the final destination will be more than worth it!

Most notable perhaps, 2018 is the year Worlds Adrift took flight into Early Access, following four years of development. We also released two major updates, introduced a brand new culture, and continued fighting the good fight when it came to bugs and optimisation. But that’s not all, as the following list just goes to show...

2018’s highlights:

  • We kicked off the year by adding multiple character slots (a much-requested feature!), as well as the highly-awaited swivel guns. This, coupled with all-new VFX and audio improvements, helped to make ship battles all the more exhilarating.

  • Next, we introduced Kioki islands to the game, and in fact, overhauled the map a total of three times over the course of the year, also introducing community islands with crafted gameplay elements like spikes, puzzles and turrets.

  • In May, not only did Worlds Adrift launch into Early Access, but to celebrate the occasion, we organized a Sky-high gaming event, letting players and influencers experience the game like never before - 150ft above the city of London. Another world's first by Bossa.

  • We quickly followed the launch with a complete overhaul to character movement, with improved climbing and additional actions and emotes, making your avatars more expressive than ever.

  • In July, we initiated the Community Cloud Council, which continues to provide Worlds Adrift with invaluable player insight, and a channel through which the community’s voice can truly contribute to its ongoing development.

  • Priding ourselves on our open dev approach, in August, we launched the PTS server, meaning we could react to your feedback better than ever. This month also saw the launch of in-game alliances; a long-requested feature.

  • In October, Worlds Adrift entered a brand new and exciting stage of development; New Foundations, during which time existing core gameplay features were advanced, while new ones were added, improving the overall player experience.

Kicking this off with Update 27, we introduced the PVE Server, Haven (a new tutorial starting zone for improved onboarding), as well as cooking, crafting, furniture, and guitars, all of which helped to make the social elements of the game more defined and rewarding. We also launched our new Marauder quests, together with an animated trailer.

  • To round off the year, we launched Update 29: Will of the Council, which addressed some of the top issues raised by the community, including the addition of proximity voice chat, and greatly improved the game’s overall performance and stability.

So, as you fly into the New Year with us and your crew, we wish you Smooth Sailing, and look forward to the amazing ship battles, crazy encounters and exciting social gatherings that lay ahead in the world of Foundation. As always, we remain focused on delivering an experience that allows you to enjoy Worlds Adrift however you see fit, whether that’s flying your skyship with friends, enjoying the view, exploring the world, or engaging in battle.

We pledge to not only continue listening and engaging with your feedback, but to also act upon it. We greatly appreciate your belief in us, your passion for this game, your commitment through both the rough and calm skies, and your incredible help in making this game what it is today. Worlds Adrift will only reach its full potential with you on board. Together, let’s soar!

See you in the skies,
Sylvain

It's been a busy year for everyone in the community! In game and outside of it. Here is a little round up of the most memorable creative moments - be it Ships, Screens, Musics or ARTS...

Screenshots:📸

Scenic moments or game hilarity, here are some of the showstoppers!
Like when Negan first laid eyes on Old Alexandria... what a moment...

Or Demon's festive #squadgoals

When Harmswahy made an classic air-plane.

Or the less classic - Fauzty's Ring of Fire... speediest ship of the races!

And what about Cora's Balloon!?

Remember gitlitwitit's for their absolutely horrific creation, The Dolphin?

Spitfyres painted Christmassy HULK Ship...

Degus parked well...

Art:🎨

When it comes to Art, Loryenne has been the famed creative of the community from the start, recognisable by her dreamy, painterly style!

And in the recent months we've had an expansion of creatives in our midst! Kaigsly started by doodling Worlds Adrift art on a napkin, then shared this sketche, and later colourised it.

Oh, Naomi, that's too cute! If it weren't for the cannon you'd have almost felt safe...

Oh, and Kittco's Skygoats?! :D

We have Desdymona's glorious graphic works inspired by WA islands, making for some delightful phone backgrounds and album covers...

We have some FANTASTIC clothing designs by Cheapshot for

Kain is experimenting with a... heavier medium for art. Metal statues inspired by the floating islands of Foundation!

Korgothy made exquisite Eagle Eye coins and the WA Team ended up commissioning a few. The craft is incredible.

Music:🎵

Can someone please make a Worlds Adrift GMV out of this track by Jonny? 😭

Murdersauce murdered on pretty much a monthly basis. This was posted with a humble "trying to break out of my comfort zone, going without drums"

https://soundcloud.com/murd3rsauc3/always-above-the-understorm

You can check the whole playlist out for yourself, it's a fantastic collection of trip hop/electronic goodness, and makes a great background track to some chill farming!

And Bigsby... Remenants inspired music.... ON POINT.

Greetings Travellers,

Ready for some weekly news?

Updated!

We are happy to celebrate the arrival of Update 29, and we are happy with all the brilliant feedback (positive and negative, but always constructive!) we’ve been receiving about the new features!

There’s more to come, of course, as work on Update 30 and 31 is already underway. But for now, behold the gigantic full list of features below, jump into the game and experience it by yourself.

Read Patch Notes Here!

In addition to these massive additions to the game, the significant FPS improvement, we have reset the knowledge nodes (data banks) today so you can keep gaining knowledge without losing any items or progress. Use it wisely for your new ciphers slots and updating your cannon and engine schematics to adapt to overheat.

Ship-building Challenge

Now that we have ship painting, how about making a Christmas Tree Ship?!

Rules: MAKE IT COLOURFUL and submit links to Steam screenshots in the comments below!

Deadline: Thursday, 20th of December, 2018

Reward: 2 x drums of paint!

What have the devs been up to this week?

  • Wrote a tool to analyse our world snapshots so we can what entities are causing the most data

  • Working on step of placing parts issues

Building on the hugely ambitious groundwork laid out by New Foundations, Update 29 - Will of the Council - continues to address the amazing feedback we’ve received from the community during Early Access, and is another momentous milestone for the ongoing journey that is Worlds Adrift.

That said, we thought we’d speak to a few key members of Foundation about what Update 29 truly means to them, and how it continues to enhance their exploration of the skies...

Performance:

“PERFORMANCE IS 100% BETTER.” - Ali

“In one update they were able to fix so much performance!” - Dragonbone

Overheat/Material Rebalance:

"This is still the best game out there, in my opinion. I was starting to get bored, now everyone is talking again and trying to figure things out. I, for one, like the changes the update brought! It gives new challenges!" - Anne

Ciphers & Schems:

“I really love how the devs are listening to the community (especially since this update seems focused on that). Firstly, a new approach to schematics is a great improvement, in the [in-game, community-ran trade shop], there is a ton of unsold and “bad” schematics, ciphers will greatly benefit us!” - DJmouton

"Overall I like the graphical and performance upgrade, ciphers will surely come in handy and we can't wait to dive into it more." - Schiraz

Voice Chat:

"As for VOIP, I think it's just another thing that gives the game some realism and makes the game a even better MMO." - Villager_Mines

“Voice chat is great! There's a lot of meeting around the [in-game, community-ran trade shop], we've seen some greatly talented guitarists (even drunk ones) and overhauls are always great fun, I think voice chat will add a conviviality to the party, and better interaction between players (easier to trade also)” - DJmouton

QoL:

“I wanted to thank [designer] for the small things that really affect the quality of life. Specifically the stats updating when you place materials in the slots now. Such a small thing improves our quality of life so much.” - Computgun

Painting/Creative:

“I think being a player for over a year, more customization of the ship just makes the game even better” - Villager Mines

“...Painting has just always been on the back of my mind. I often value aesthetics over efficiency (style matters) and it's always hard to have matching panels/engines etc... I'm expecting a lot of creativity from the community, probably flags on bigger ships (maybe before alliance flags or some kind come to the game), I know that we're all gonna have a ton of fun with that!” - DJmouton

"Oh, I forgot the best update: I now have a new headpiece for my outfit to look as stupid as humanly possible, so that's good. (This is not a veiled complaint, I genuinely like this)" -Atreties
