We Need To Go Deeper - Nick Lives

Reach out and touch this month's new Crate Update - filled to the brim with a brand new UI. the Spring Event, and a special suprise! Details below.

Features

"Tangible" Console UI! - To better sell the fantasy of working together to run your big, bulky vessel, and in order to better teach new and returning players many of Deeper's quirks and mechanics, we've introduced new custom interfaces for every console!

Now, when using your Periscope, your Navigation Console, or a Weapons console, you'll be greeted with a custom-made panel to represent your character's console controls! We're confident this will lead to better immersion and clarity overall, and looks nifty to boot!

vvvv [APRIL FOOLS 2018] vvvv

All New Battle Royale Mode! - We know a cash grab game design opportunity when we see one, and what would suit our game better than an on-foot PvP mode?

Set on The Mysterious Island, up to 50 players will find themselves having to battle for survival in an innovative last-man-standing game mode! Starting out naked, players will have to scavenge for clothes and weapons, and take eachother out until only one victor remains!

We're very proud of this new mode, and we hope you'll like it too!

Spring Event

The Spring Event is Live!
  • 6 Special Cosmetics!
  • Mutant Egg Hunt!
  • Hopping Abominations!
Spring has sprung, and so has Dr. Moreau's mutant hybrids! Sprung into the ocean, that is! Now, Dr. Moreau's sick experiment is swimming about leaving Mutant Eggs, most of which bear its twisted spawn, but some eggs contain the Festive Heads of Dr. Moreau's previous experiments! Don't ask why.

Dr. Moreau's experiments will expire spontaneously April 15th.

Fixes and Tweaks

- Added dust clouds to player movement to make running around slightly more satisfying.

- Fixed battery not correctly disarming players when grabbed.

- Fixed boss names not showing up.

- Fixed a bug which allowed players to hammer on the cannon type switch button and make the cannon disappear altogether.

- Made null checks on several SyncVar hooks.

- Menu music now loops.

- Added Update Announcement section to Main Menu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well that's it for now! Let us know what you guys think of the update as always! Happy Hunting!

Clean out yer ears and rinse your goggles for the Sensations Update! This month is all about displays and useful info for your future voyages, including an all-new Tactics View for Periscope users, and all-new Linux OS support! Read on for the sweet deets.

Features

Tactical Periscope View!

This all-new Radar-like view can now be accessed from the Periscope at the press of a button! (Spacebar by default)

The Tactical View will allow you to see further ahead than your Navigator or Weapons Specialist, giving you the insight your crew needs to make better decisions about where to go next, where the next expedition may lie, and where danger is lurking.

Furthermore, the tactical view displays a bevy of info regarding your vessel. From hull integrity, to fuel, to ammunition and power levels.

Linux OS Support!

Penguins rejoice, for Linux and Steam OS Support is here! Spread the word to your command-console-using friends, and tell them to come join the party!

In-Game Resolution Options!

This one's long overdue, but hey - maybe we'll get partial credit for turning in late. Say goodbye to the days where holding Alt before beginning the game is necessary for changing your resolution! No longer will you have to harness the secrets of the game just to change your picture size. Hi Ma! I'm a real game now!

Lonesome Secret

Finally, a new secret hat has been added to the game. For those with a keen eye and especially for those who frequent our streams, this image is the only clue you'll need to unlock it.

Bug Fixes

- Fixed in-game UI not scaling properly on different aspect ratios. No more squishing!

- Fixed menus not scaling properly on dif. aspect ratios as well! Consistency all around!

- Moved our Discord DLLs to the plugins folder, hopefully ensuring that we see fewer missing DLL exceptions being thrown.

- Added better exception handling for the Discord integration.

- Fixed some cases of pop-in spawning on environmental hazards and enemies.

- Fixed game starting at the wrong resolution. It should be a lot better at detecting your native resolution from the start now.

- Added camera effects for exterior view to bring back some of the original assets' saturation and color.

Our Player of the Month this time around is MrMountainMan!

MrMountainMan has consistently been friendly, funny, and helpful no matter where he's found. In the Forums he's often found participating in other discussions, offering feedback, or offering help to new users. In our inbox he's been helpful in solving bugs, frequently sending output logs to the Deli Interactive email, which is never not going to be notable given how useful it can be for us! In our streams, he's consistently present and helping keep our chat lively and active, and sometimes helping keep us on track when we start going off the rails! Thank you for everything you've been doing MrMountainMan, and congratulations!

This update is chock-full of bug fixes and balance features, all reported and requested by you guys! Figured a bit of cleanup work was to be done, so Jordan and Ryan went ahead and squashed as many problems as they could find these past few weeks!

Fixes/Improvements:

-AI crew members' pathfinding process is now multithreaded, which is a heck of a lot quicker.

-Every remote procedure call in our code base has been carefully modified to ensure exceptions are handled with every reference and error reporting is dramatically improved (log files are now even more useful for networking bugs!)

-Kicking players mid-game! The third time a player is brigged they are kicked out of the game completely! *Please* use only on abusive players rather than newbies - we reserve the right to remove this feature if it is making the game impossible to play for newer players.

-Fixed a bug in AI crew member task allocation causing them to only want to revive the host, but not clients, while in expeditions.

-Fixed periscopes remaining after entering a cave.

-Fixed players being able to move and use items when in the bed during expeditions.

-Fixed a bug where mid-game joining players would never see wall barnacles as hatched if they had hatched before joining (the barnacles kept growing too - hoo boy).

-Made a failsafe to ensure that mid-game joining players' sea backgrounds and rock sprites all match up with the current biome.

-Fixed a bug where a player could use their weapons and a battery after leaving the brig.

-Fixed a bug in AI crew member pathfinding causing them to take straight-up comical paths, flip around erratically, etc.

-Fixed a bug where two matches coming from the same public IP could cause the wrong one to be joined.

-Fixed several default cosmetics not being unlocked (Steward Standard anyone?)

-Optimized netcode to use ~95% fewer "Find" functions, which are notoriously slow in Unity.

-Gold now displays upon entering civilizations.

-The gold meter is much more fast and responsive.

-Upgraded Unity version to 2017.3 to get the latest Unity Multiplayer fixes (including an enticing set of fixes related to double-sending and double-receiving remote procedure calls).

-Upgraded NAT punchthrough tool and provided it with better reference/exception handling.

-Upgraded Steam API to latest available version.

-Clam hitboxes are much more fair now.

-Fixed a bug where hull breaches in certain areas of the Requin were inaccessible by AI crew members.

-Fixed AI crew members falling through the floor on revival.

-Fixed a bug where mid-game joining players could have 100% opaque green overlays over the exterior view.

-Fixed lampreys not hitting players and reduced their distance before attacking.

-Fixed a bug where ManOWar sounds bypassed the SFX volume settings.

-Fixed shop cases only being able to be paid out by the host.

-Made access to Discord Rich Presence DLLs safer and improved exception handling.

Player of the Month
This update's Player of the Month is Freemankiller! Freemankiller has provided us with valuable feedback almost since launch a year ago. His ability to find exploits and present them to us has been a huge tool for improvement. But his choice for this month comes from his ever-present bombastic participation in the community contests held in January! As with all Player of the Month winners, he'll receive four extra copies of Deeper to give to friends!

As a fair warning, given the sheer size of this update, we almost certainly have some new bugs hiding, waiting to strike, that will need help tracking down as they come up. But we’re very optimistic and very excited to bring you guys this update after a whole year on early access! As always keep sending us your feedback and your reports as they come up, and we'll continue to try and make We Need To Go Deeper the best it can be! Happy handshaking!

Welcome to the final results of The New Years' Games! For our final contest, we had you guys sending us your Deeper-related art and fiction, and while there was only a few of you who entered (and some of you who seemed to create entries but never formally entered the contest as per our Contest Rules), we at least got some great art out of it!

Winners

1st Place in Visual Art goes to the amazing Bee with their hand-sewn entry in the form of an adorable plush-ified Espadon vessel! Seriously, the whole team was so enchanted by this cute-as-nails entry, thank you so much for making it, Bee. ːsteamhappyː You'll be sent your gift copy shortly!

1st Place in Fiction was a lot tougher to decide on. The team deliberated for a long time but since we couldn't come to an agreement, this award is officially tied between ADcrafter's short but sweet comedy piece and Freemankiller's elaborate self-made-biome piece - congratulations, guys! You both get copies because we're indecisive!

You can find both of their winning entries here:

ADcrafter: http://steamcommunity.com/app/307110/discussions/4/1692659769947091905/

Freemankiller:http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=974802563/

Honorable Mentions

There were two additional entries the team were big fans of over the course of this competition, that unfortunately did not qualify for judging given neither of them were officially entered via the comments of last week's announcement, as per entry rules. Nonetheless, we wanted to highlight them anyway for being solid works in and of themselves:

Crimson's simple but elegant little piece describes an intruiging futuristic post-apocalyptic version of Deeper's world, with some clever use of the game's own title: http://steamcommunity.com/app/307110/discussions/4/1692659769959486616/http://steamcommunity.com/app/307110/discussions/4/1692659769959486616/

Do We Really Need To Go Deeper?'s aptly named, "Mastapiece" managed to make me squirt my morning coffee out my nose when I saw it in all its glory, and really, isn't that the purpose of all art?

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1282478845

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks again for all of you who entered! Buckle up, because next week is We Need To Go Deeper's 1 Year Anniversary on Early Access, and the update we have been cooking up is going to be a doozy!
