Update 37 Preview—Screen Narration, Hide Shoulders, & More

Learn about some of the new features everybody who plays ESO can enjoy with the Update 37 base-game patch.

Arriving in tandem with the Scribes of Fate DLC pack on March 13 for PC/Mac and March 28 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles, the Update 37 base-game patch is a free update for all ESO players—no additional purchase required. This patch introduces a series of balance changes, bug fixes, and new features.

Screen Narration

The latest in ESO’s ongoing accessibility-focused improvements, Update 37 introduces Screen Narration, allowing you to have the majority of the game’s menus (with some exceptions) narrated to you as you navigate.

This option becomes available for everybody who enables Accessibility Mode in the game’s settings menu (navigate to Settings, then Accessibility), and it allows you to choose between a masculine or feminine voice and set both the speed and volume of the narration.

The Screen Narration option

The narration is computer generated in the language you choose to play in (English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, or Simplified Chinese).

Note that some menus and UI elements are not supported by Screen Narration at this time, including Scrying, Excavating, Tales of Tribute, lockpicking, and certain fishing and Champion Point screens. In addition, some gameplay elements, such as combat, in-world navigation, and interactable objects are not narrated in addition to interactions with NPCs and character dialog (to ensure it does not conflict with the voice acting).

We plan to integrate additional menus into screen narration in the future, and we hope this new addition to our Accessibility Mode options helps our players get the most out of the game.

Hide Shoulders

Also arriving as part of Update 37 is Hide Shoulders, a new cosmetic Collectible that allows you to, well, hide whatever shoulder gear your character is currently wearing. Like Hide Helm, this option can be enabled when customizing your look in the Outfit Station. Simply navigate to Armor Styles, select Shoulders, and then select the Hide Shoulders “style.”

To enable Hide Shoulders, you must first acquire it by spending Event Tickets at the Impresario during any of ESO’s upcoming in-game events. Keep an eye out on https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/ for information on when the next event arrives—hint: it’s a silly one!

We know the community has been asking for the ability to free their shoulders (without losing gear bonuses) for a long time now, and we can’t wait to see the stylish-AND-functional new looks that come with it!

Housing Improvements

Finally, we squeezed in some new quality-of-life improvements for the Housing System. This includes a set of new filters for the Housing Editor’s placement and retrieval tabs, allowing you to place items specifically from your bank, inventory, house storage, or collectibles, items that are bound or unbound, and items by the furnishing limit type they fall under.

We also added the ability to reset training dummies you're in combat with (making it easier to restart a parse) and improved your ability to see and manage who is in your home from the Housing Editor’s Settings menu. This includes real-time notifications when guests arrive and depart, plus an option to kick occupants out if they’re getting too rowdy!

In addition, when shopping for a new house, you can see a full list of the furnishings that come with both the furnished and unfurnished versions before you buy. If you’re a Housing aficionado, look for these new features and more soon!

Update 37 For All

These are just some of the highlights you can enjoy with the Update 37 base-game patch, and a host of further changes, additions, and improvements are not mentioned above. This includes updates to target markers (improving enemy player targeting and adding new settings) and a realignment of daily and weekly reset timers (10AM UTC for NA servers and 3AM UTC for EU servers) for daily quests, daily Enlightenment bonuses, daily writs, and more.

Update 37 arrives on March 13 for PC/Mac, and on March 28 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Don’t forget, as a base-game patch, this update is free for all existing ESO players, with no purchase required! Master the Power of Apocrypha

Unimaginable power is yours to wield at will with the all-new Arcanist class. Just unveiled today as part of the 2023 ESO Global Reveal, the Arcanist is ESO’s seventh and newest class. Arriving with the upcoming Necrom Chapter in June, it brings powerful new abilities and mechanics drawn from Hermaeus Mora’s realm of Oblivion.

As a practitioner of this mystical new class, you can harness powerful runes, tomes of ancient knowledge, and the energy of Apocrypha itself to unleash destructive, defensive, or restorative magics.

The Arcanist wields the secrets of Apocrypha

The Arcanist class also introduces a new combat mechanic: Crux. As you activate certain Arcanist class abilities, you generate Crux, which you can save up and spend when activating other specific abilities. The more Crux you generate before spending (up to a maximum of three), the more your ability is empowered when you do spend it! How you utilize the Crux generating and spending abilities in your combat rotations can have a major impact on your effectiveness, so plan accordingly!

Wield Three New Skill Lines

No matter your character or role, the Arcanist class unlocks exciting new abilities and creates new ways to play via its three unique skill lines.

If you like to play offense, when wielding the destructive magics of the damage-focused Herald of the Tome skill line, you manipulate arcane energies to bombard your foes with damaging blasts, beams, and more. This includes active abilities such as Runeblades, which launches lethal projectiles at your foes, generating Crux as you do.

Prefer to play a supporting role? With the restorative Curative Runeforms skill line, you can make use of healing runes to keep your party (or yourself) healthy, shield your allies from damage, or even help them navigate the battlefield via portals with the Apocryphal Gate ability, which summons a passage between worlds!

Walk between worlds with the Arcanist

If you like to play defensively and protect your allies, the magic of the Apocryphal Soldier skill line allows you to dominate your foes’ attention, buff yourself or your party’s defensive capabilities, and even conjure an explosive damage shield with Runespite Ward, which can be improved with Crux.

This is, of course, just a taste of the kind of power you can unlock when wielding the Arcanist class, as each skill line features a full suite of potent active, passive, and Ultimate abilities, many of which generate or utilize Crux.

2023 Global Reveal—Necrom’s Telvanni Peninsula & Apocrypha Zones

Two New Zones

ESO’s intrepid adventurers will get the opportunity to explore two all-new zones in the upcoming Necrom Chapter: the Telvanni Peninsula and Apocrypha. First shown today as part of the 2023 ESO Global Reveal livestream, these new regions will be open to outsiders when the new Chapter launches in June.

Located along the eastern coast of Morrowind, the Telvanni Peninsula is home to House Telvanni. If you’ve previously explored Sadrith Mora within the island of Vvardenfell, you might be familiar with the region’s alien landscape, including its giant mushrooms and the mages who call it home. However, separate from the Telvanni yet at the center of it all is the zone’s capital, Necrom. Also known as the city of the dead, Necrom has not been seen in an Elder Scrolls game since 1994’s The Elder Scrolls: Arena. In this new Chapter, you’ll have an opportunity to venture through the Dark Elf city, experience its solemn purpose, and uncover its ancient history and lore.

Dive Deep into a new region of Morrowind

In this new Chapter, you can also explore the endless library of Apocrypha, Hermaeus Mora’s realm of Oblivion, and uncover secrets hidden from mortals and Daedra alike. Home to both the followers of the Lord of Knowledge and the lost souls of those who once sought to learn its secrets, Apocrypha is unlike any Daedric realm you have experienced in ESO before. You might have delved into some aspects of this part of Oblivion from The Elder Scrolls Online V: Skyrim—Dragonborn, but in the Necrom Chapter, you should be prepared to discover all-new areas not seen before in any of your previous adventures.

Don’t Get Lost in Mora’s Endless Library

Both new regions host all manner of challenges, including new delves, public dungeons, world bosses, a new Trial, and a brand-new type of world event. As you may expect from an Elder Scrolls game, each zone has its own mysteries for you to uncover, and as you progress your Shadow Over Morrowind adventure, you can also discover a host of stand-alone side quests and encounter a diverse assortment of non-player characters.

Encounter New Allies & Rewards

In your journeys into the new zones, you can recruit two all-new Companions, the Redguard Arcanist Azandar Al-Cybiades and Argonian Warden Sharp-As-Night. Each Companion features their own personalities, abilities for you to unlock, and stories to tell (including their own quests).

Both new zones also provide no shortage of rewards for those brave enough to venture into their darkest corners.
