The Elder Scrolls® Online

You can play The Elder Scrolls Online for free until Wednesday. Bethesda is holding a free play event in its sprawling MMO, and it gives you access to the full base game for a week.

The free play event started yesterday and runs until November 13 at 10 am EST / 3 pm GMT. If you've played in any of the past free play events, your character and progression will carry over into this one, but if you're creating a new ESO account, you'll get 500 crowns to spend in the in-game store, which is a nice little bonus.

Bethesda says this event gives you access to four starting classes: Nightblade, Templar, Dragonknight, and Sorcerer. You'll be able to explore 23 zones while pursuing the game's main storyline and the Mages Guild and Fighters Guild quests.

To get going, head over to the event page and select your platform, then follow the instructions to download The Elder Scrolls Online client. It's worth a try, if you've never played—after a rocky first year, The Elder Scrolls Online has found its footing and become one of the best MMOs out there.

HDR on PC hasn’t improved much in 2019. Despite there being more HDR gaming monitors than ever before, the very [cms-block]s for HDR continue to be quite expensive compared to non-HDR monitors, and the situation around Windows 10 support for it is still a bit of a mess. However, provided you’re willing to fight through all that, then the next step on your path to high dynamic range glory is to get an HDR compatible graphics card.

Below, you’ll find a complete list of all the Nvidia and AMD graphics cards that have built-in support for HDR, as well as everything you need to know about getting one that also supports Nvidia and AMD’s own HDR standards, G-Sync Ultimate and FreeSync 2. I’ve also put together a list of all the PC games that support HDR as well, so you know exactly which PC games you can start playing in high dynamic range.

Dragonhold DLC Game Pack
The Dragonhold DLC game pack brings the year-long Season of the Dragon storyline to its epic conclusion with a new zone, quests, rewards, challenges, and more.

Explore Southern Elsweyr
Decades ago, the once-proud region of Pellitine was devastated by a terrible plague and fire. Those that remain struggle to survive in a world reduced to ruin and beset by bandits, slavers, and worse. Only in the southern capital of Senchal does a small bastion of defenders hold firm against the chaos. However, a rage of Dragons invades from the north, and Southern Elsweyr once again stands on the precipice.

Discover Pellitine’s ancient history

In the Dragonhold DLC, you can explore this new zone, uncover its history, and confront its many tormentors. Similar in size to previous DLC story zones, such as Clockwork City or Murkmire, you’ll discover tons of unique quests, bosses, delves and more, and journey through a scarred-but-vibrant world full of adventure.

Join Sai Sahan & Restore the Dragonguard
In the Dragonhold main story questline, you can join Sai Sahan as he reforges the ancient order of Dragon hunters known as the Dragonguard. Only if you work together to uncover the secrets of this long-lost organization do you have a chance at stopping an all-new Dragon from once again dominating Pellitine. During your adventures with Sai and his allies, you receive rewards, including new and unique collectibles. You also gradually unlock improvements and additions to the Dragonguard’s base of operations.

Help restore the Dragonguard

Conclude the Season of the Dragon
Should you complete both the Dragonhold DLC and Elsweyr Chapter main story, you unlock a series of bonus Season of the Dragon quests that conclude the epic year-long story once and for all. The great Dragon Kaalgrontiid was not destroyed during the events of Elsweyr, only delayed.

Kaalgrontiid returns in fury

You need all of your might and the help of your most-powerful allies to put a stop to the Dragon’s plans before he can change the face of Tamriel forever.

As you venture into Southern Elsweyr, complete quests, and face the Dragon menace, you earn powerful new gear (including three new zone sets and three crafted sets), complete new achievements, and gather unique collectibles including new pets, furnishings, outfit styles, and more. Pellitine’s hidden riches await!

Purchase Details
The Dragonhold DLC game pack is free for all ESO Plus members and available for purchase for 2,000 crowns from the in-game Crown Store (listed under DLC).

Note that if your ESO Plus membership lapses, you will lose access to the DLC until you renew or purchase the DLC with crowns. You won’t lose any items or rewards you earned while you had access.

This includes access to the DLC game pack, the Legendary Dragon Horse mount, the Legendary Dragon Wolf pet, and five Crown Experience Scrolls. Become a Pellitine pirate with this free hat!

Update 24’s Performance Improvements

In addition to the DLC game pack, we’ve also launched the Update 24 base-game update. This update features a ton of performance upgrades for the base game that improves the experience for all ESO players.

Memory Management Overhaul
This change fundamentally alters memory use in ESO to reduce fragmentation. What does this mean? It means improved game stability, resulting in reduced instances of crashing or dashboarding. This change is most notable for those who play on base consoles (Update 24 is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation®4 on November 5), but all should see some improvements.

Behind-the-scenes Combat Ability Improvements (Part 1)
To lessen server load, the team has been working on rewriting some of the most consumptive combat abilities. While initially this change might not appear to have a huge impact, eventually these improvements will lessen the server load and improve performance during larger combat engagements. Back to Chalman Keep!

Complete Rewrite of the Looking for Group System
Finally, the team completely rebuilt the Looking for Group system from the ground up, improving the tool’s reliability and speed when queuing for Dungeons and Battlegrounds. This change helps ensure the Group Finder works effectively even when under heavy load.

This is just the start of our proposed improvements to the game’s performance, and if you’d like to keep track of everything we’re doing to make the game run better, check out this article for monthly updates.

To see everything coming and changing in the Dragonhold and Update 24 patch, check out our official forums.

Announcements Dragonhold Update 24
The Elder Scrolls® Online

The Elsweyr expansion to The Elder Scrolls Online finally brought dragons to the MMO world of Tamriel. Their flying, fire-spitting presence is bad news for the cat-like Khajiit who live in Elsweyr, but beginning on October 3 it'll be good for the actual, real-life cats (and other fur-bearing creatures) who live among us.

From October 3 to December 9, ZeniMax will donate $1 for every five dragons killed to the Best Friends Animal Society and Four Paws charities. The Best Friends Animal Society is dedicated to promoting and establishing no-kill animal shelters throughout North America, while Four Paws is a European advocacy group "for animals under direct human influence," ranging from pets to the "wildlife entertainment industry." ZeniMax has committed to donating up to $200,000 in the Slay Dragons, Save Cats campaign, split evenly between the two charities.

Special events will take place during the charity drive, beginning with Dragon Rise, which offers three unlockable rewards for all Elsweyr players: A Green Dragon Imp pet, a Grim Harvester costume, and the Dragon's Treasure Trove. Dragon Rise begins on October 3, five days before the charity campaign begins, but all dragons killed during the event will count toward the total. Other events include the Witches Festival, Undaunted Celebration, Dawn of the Dragonguard, and the year-ending New Life Festival, which will actually take place after the charity campaign is over but still sounds like a good time.

Offing a million dragons to hit the maximum donation amount is a pretty big task, but it's actually already been done: Bethesda said that more than a million of them have been turned into boots and pocketbooks since the Elsweyr expansion went live in June, so just keeping up that pace over the next few months should be enough to get the job done.

Details on the Slay Dragons, Save Cats charity campaign can be had at elderscrollsonline.com. Ahead of the launch of the event, ZeniMax is retweeting photos of players' cats (and a few dogs) with the #SlayDragonsSaveCats hashtag on Twitter. Enjoy!

The Elder Scrolls® Online - ZOS_Jessica_Folsom
The Season of the Dragon saga reaches its epic conclusion with Dragonhold, The Elder Scrolls Online’s latest DLC story zone. Learn about this new adventure and all the changes coming with Update 24 in this preview article!

The Dragonhold DLC game pack provides a new zone to explore, a new main questline to complete, new mechanics and challenges to experience, and more. Update 24 is a free game update that arrives alongside the DLC and includes the first wave of our announced performance improvements, Twitch Drops for consoles, and additional fixes and balance changes.

A Land in Ruins
The ancient Khajiiti kingdom known as Pellitine lies in shambles. Devastated by a terrible plague and its purging fire decades ago, Southern Elsweyr devolved into a lawless region beset by slavers, pirates, and brigands. As refugees from the surrounding land slowly make their way to the zone’s capital of Senchal, the city’s few remaining defenders muster for their last stand against the chaos.

However, worse things threaten the people of Pellitine. The Dragons, free from the Halls of Colossus, have brought their rage south. Bolstered by a cult of worshipers known as the Order of the New Moon, they devastate the region and continue their secret schemes.

All manner of rogues thrive in the ruined kingdom

These challenges and more await those willing to venture into the scorched confines of Southern Elsweyr. Consisting of three unique biomes (including scorched-but-recovering wilds, old-growth forests, and tropical grasslands) and packed with new delves, world bosses, quests, and Dragon hunts, this new zone contains plenty to keep you engaged.

The odds are stacked against you, but rest assured, the benefits gained by exploring Southern Elsweyr make it all worth it. The Dragonhold DLC boasts more rewards than any previous DLC story zone, including new titles (such as the much-requested “Pirate” title), tons of new collectibles (including a mix of costumes, mementos, and outfit styles), item sets, and more. Pellitine might be in ruins, but untold riches await those who know where to look!

Restore the Dragonguard
In the Dragonhold main questline, you work with fan-favorite character Sai Sahan (returning for this storyline) to gather a rag-tag group of pirates and adventurers and restore the ancient order known as the Dragonguard. Once thought lost to history, this ancient organization of Dragon hunters must return to aid the Khajiit of Elsweyr against the Dragon threat.

Face the Dragon threat with new and returning allies

The Redguard swordmaster is not your only companion in this endeavor, however. When you start the zone’s main story, a powerful and famous ally from Elder Scrolls lore joins you. No spoilers, sorry! Together, you and your new allies must seek out the secrets of the lost Dragonguard order and fight against the machinations of the mighty Dragon Laatvulon and his New Moon cultists.

The Season of the Dragon Finale
Dragonhold also brings the year-long Season of the Dragon saga to its epic conclusion. Starting with the Wrathstone DLC and continuing with the Elsweyr Chapter and Scalebreaker DLC, the story that began at the start of the year reaches its climax in this final 2019 DLC.

In addition to its typical main-story quest content, Dragonhold features bonus quests that let you and your allies put an end to the machinations of the Dragon Kaalgrontiid (from the Elsweyr Chapter main story). You delayed the terrible Dragon’s plans in Elsweyr. Now, in Southern Elsweyr, his schemes must be stopped for good before he can gain the power of the gods!

Kaalgrontiid returns in fury

To unlock the Season of the Dragon finale quests, you must complete both the Elsweyr and Dragonhold main story questlines. You don’t have to complete the stories from this year’s two Dungeon DLCs, but you should if you want to see the whole picture!

Update 24’s Base-Game Improvements

In addition to the new DLC game pack, we are also launching a massive base-game patch, free to all players, that features the first wave of the previously announced performance improvements. This first batch of changes includes a memory management overhaul, the first phase of combat ability performance improvements, and a complete redesign of the Looking for Group system.

These changes will reduce the amount of crashes/dashboarding, improve combat responsiveness, and improve the reliability and speed of the Group Finder. We know that the ESO community has long requested a performance update, so we are thrilled to launch the first part of what will be a massive, year-long series of improvements with Update 24!

Twitch Drops for Consoles

Update 24 also features the introduction of Twitch Drops for console players, allowing you to earn Twitch Drops for your Xbox One or PlayStation®4 account simply by watching Drop-enabled ESO streams! Note that while this addition is scheduled for Q4 2019, it might not be immediately available upon U24 console launch, so stay tuned for announcements in the future!

Soon, PlayStation®4 and Xbox One players will be able to receive Twitch Drops!
