After a year drifting through the sinister oceans of Early Access, Failbetter’s wonderful Sunless Sea [official site] is released this Friday. Full steam ahead, Mr. Boatswain, full steam ahead. It’s a game of steampunk and Lovecraft, sailing and survival, roleplaying and pint-sized naval combat, wonderful words and terrifying faces. It was one of 2014’s best games as far as Adam and I were concerned, and all being well we’ll be saying the same thing by the end of this year. Launch is almost upon us! Sunless Sea will leave Early Access at 5:30pm GMT on 6 February!

We'll save the ugly-crying and emotional speeches for launch day, but: we've got this far because of the support and feedback of Early Access players. Thank you.

Our aim is to be in the top ten selling titles on Steam on our launch day. That kind of visibility could make a very meaningful difference to the future of Failbetter (and the future of the game!) so we are massing all of our efforts to get there on 6 February.

You can do a lot to support our goal. If you do even one of the things below we'd be hugely grateful.

1. Tweet or Tumbl about the game on launch day.

It takes a few seconds and will help hugely. Your endorsement of the finished product would mean a lot.

2. Write a review of Sunless Sea on Steam.

Help people get to know the finished game. Upload a review after the Early Access box has left the page and help our finished game make a good impression on the public.

3. Reassure people that we do not practice cannibalism.

This rumour has been dogging us for more than a year now and it simply will not do.

4. Facebook-post.

This isn’t for everyone, but if you have friends and family who play games, or are a member of any Facebook groups who would genuinely enjoy the game, we'd love you to share it with them.

5. Get a prominent Sunless Sea tattoo, like the one in this blog from last year.

Ideally you’d include ‘Available on Steam,’ but that’s to your preference.

6. Stream the game on launch day, on Twitch, YouTube or Steam.

Promote the stream to your friends and followers, we’ll feature our favourites and may even drop in. Even just playing the game on Steam on the 6th will help drive awareness!

7. Paste the Steam store URL for the game into any chat windows you have open. Add the phrase ‘REJECT THE DAWN MACHINE.’ They must be warned.

8. Reddit with us!

We’re doing an AMA on launch day, where we’ll be talking about Sunless Sea, Early Access, Fallen London and probably whether we’d fight one giant crab or a hundred small ones. More details to come.

9. Whisper ‘Sunless Sea’ into your cupped hands. Breathe it into bottlenecks, sing it down drainpipes, sign it to silent password-keepers. Only those two words. Do not explain. Do not stop.

10. Join us for our Virtual Launch Party!

A number of hardy Failbetters will be sticking around on 6 Feb (UK evening/night time) to join YOU for an almost-actual, actually-virtual party. Things that we can neither confirm nor deny will happen: streaming Sunless Sea, dares, rats, the opportunity to chat to the team. Bring friends, rivals, cousins, people you’ve just met and want to impress. Most of the fun will be happening at twitch.tv/failbettergames (our brand-new twitch channel!). Keep your eye on @failbettergames and @echobazaar on twitter if you want to get involved.

Starting an irregular series in which I revisit Early Access games a few months on from when I first tried them. Have they come along much? Does a finished game seem a realistic prospect? >

Bit of a silly one to start this series with, given Sunless Sea hits 1.0 – and thus release status on February 6th, with a major update due around that time, but I’ve been yearning to revisit Sunless Sea’s mesmerisingly-written and impeccably menacing Fallen London for some time, so let’s do this anyway.

It's three weeks until launch. We're busy packing Sunless Sea full of content and polishing it to a high shine for you.

New this week: Romance your crew!

It is now possible to romance the Longshanks Gunner and the Sly Navigator, with other romance options to come. However, romancing your officers may cause embarrassment if you already have a Sweetheart.

(It is entirely coincidental, but we'd also like to point out that you can sound your horn in Sunless Sea by pressing H. Have fun with that!)

We'll have some exciting news about launch day for you next week.

In this topsy-turvy world, who knows what constitutes a release date anymore? Me probably, and I think that finishing with your early access period and launching as a finished game ought to be called something else. February 6th isn’t Sunless Sea’s release date, then. February 6th is its Sweet 1.0, or its Rites of Ascension, or its Day That Everyone Starts Complaining That It’s Not Perfect Day.
