FOR HONOR™ - UbiYubble

Hey Warriors!

This week is all about the Testing Grounds. We’ll be testing changes that aim to improve offense and consistency until March 12th!

You can find a summary of the Fight System Improvements here.
And a technical explanation of the attack display changes here.

As you can see, these changes cover a lot of ground – so your feedback will be crucial for us. The Testing Grounds is a playlist that’s part of the main game (no separate download necessary) and is available on all platforms.

Everyone’s feedback is welcome! You have two weeks to try out these fundamental fight changes. Feel free to post your thoughts in the Reddit mega-thread or on the forums.

3000 Steel is on the line for the faction with the most matches completed in the Testing Grounds! While you’re helping us form the future of For Honor, secure the best rewards for yourself and your fellow faction members!

Some of For Honor’s most popular ornaments are on sale for 3,000 Steel – down from the usual 5,000! Take advantage of this discount until March 5th.

MUSIC EMOTE VIDEO CONTEST WINNERS

The winners of the #fhjam Music Emote Video Contest are:

3rd Place - Scream_Wattson (25k Steel):

2nd Place - OmegaAceGames (50k Steel):

1st Place - Bugge (100k Steel):

Thank you to everyone who participated! There were a lot of amazing entries, full of inspiring use of the music emotes. Our winners showed that peace can even exist on the battlefield...although not everyone respects the “DON’T ATTACK BARDS” code.

FOR HONOR™ - UbiYubble

Hey Warriors,

Let’s get right to the point: we added the Hamarr of Ragnarok to the Honor Games! Who can say what deadly consequences this will bring to the festivities? We can’t wait to see what happens.

We’re a couple of weeks into the new season now, and we want to thank you for participating in Y4S1: Hope. Here’s everything that’s coming up:

CAROUSEL OF RAGNAROK

…this should be exciting. Seven days of Hamarr time starting today, February 20th!

EVENT ORDER

With everyone focused on the Hamarr, perhaps you can get in a few sneaky heavy attacks. Get the most executions in Carousel of Ragnarok to win better rewards for your Faction!

LOOT FEST

A Loot Fest during the Honor Games! Starting tomorrow, February 21, you’ll have the whole weekend to get that gear.

BATTLE OUTFITS

New Battle Outfits are available for all heroes! Show that you represented your Faction well in the Honor Games with “Honoring the Past”, “Honored Athlete, and “Guest of Honor.”

MUSIC EMOTE VIDEO CONTEST (#fhjam)

You have one more night to create an entry for the #fhjam contest! All you need is a short video of you and your friends (or enemies) having fun with the music emotes and any other emotes, emote spam, or in-game shenanigans.

1st Place: 100,000 Steel

2nd Place: 50,000 Steel

3rd Place: 25,000 Steel

Additional details and rules here. Remember, the contest ends on February 21st at end of day!

SUPERLATIVES

As shown on the February 13th Warrior’s Den, we wanted to look back at the heroes we’ve come to know and love during the first three years of For Honor.

Here are their high school yearbook-style superlatives:

“Tenebris” is a lifestyle, not a phase.

“Not a lot of people realize how much wearing a shirt weighs you down in battle.”

Long-distance can be tough. Unless you’re Shinobi.

He’s got great war stories. And despite his age, he never has issues keeping up with the younger generations thanks to his Sifu’s Poise.

There’s a few more of these in this Twitter thread!

FOR HONOR™ - UbiYubble

Hey Warriors,

Tomorrow, February 14th, is always a special day for us. We’re heading into our fourth year as a live game! Let’s celebrate in true For Honor style by fighting each other in the Honor Games!

The Truce of Wyverndale doesn’t mean we can’t let loose once in a while…right? In any case, this truce is a good opportunity to look back at all that’s happened in the game’s life: shifting to dedicated servers, the release of Marching Fire and Breach mode, all the new heroes, the crazy in-game events, and even the Reddit memes (especially the ones that ended up in the game).

Warriors, we want to thank you all for playing the game, talking about it, creating fan-art, sharing memes, and just being part of the For Honor community. We’re looking forward to starting the Year of Reckoning with you, and we hope that you’ll enjoy everything that’s on the way! May fortune look down kindly upon you as you compete in the Honor Games.

And if it does not, may the bards lament your passing with a suitably tragic tune on their lutes.

THE HONOR GAMES - OVERVIEW

Inspired by The Olympic Truce (which happened for the ancient Olympic Games) when the warring Leaders (“Kings”) around Olympia, as well as Sparta, had an agreement to end conflict in order to hold the games. While it didn't necessarily mean a total end to war, it was a moment when no one would interfere with people traveling to and from the Games.

Unlocked by participating in the Community Order During the Honor Games Event

  • 3rd Place: 250 Steel + Event Symbol

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Y'ALL!
FOR HONOR™ - UbiYubble

For Honor’s great war between Vikings, Samurai, Knights, and Wu Lin has reached a truce just in time for the game’s third anniversary. The greatest warriors from every faction have been invited to take part in the Honor Games to celebrate the Truce of Wyverndale. This in-game event brings back a limited-time game mode, Carousel of Fire, a spin on the 4v4 Elimination Carousel of Death mode.

In Carousel of Fire, the first time a player dies, they can respawn in five seconds, but each subsequent death adds five seconds to the timer. A team wins when all opponents are dead at the same time. Additionally, Carousel of Fire features a different variation on the game mode for each week of the event. Week 1 will add damage boosts and flaming geysers to the arena, while Week 2 will add another yet-to-be-revealed game twist.

The in-game map is also getting dressed up for the occasion with fireworks, a live crowd, musicians, and, for the first time ever, original fan art banners from the For Honor community. It is a celebration after all.

Lastly, the Peace Festival will add event-specific Battle Outfits, Ornaments, and Effects, as well as brand-new Instrument Emotes for all characters. All event loot is available in the Honor Games Bundle until March 2 for 30,000 Steel.

For Honor is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and UPLAY+.
FOR HONOR™ - UbiYubble

Hey Warriors,

Coming off the dark times of Season 3, the team wanted to celebrate the upcoming game anniversary as well as the community that continues to support and inspire the entire development team by bringing about a lighter mood. This season, the team is excited to take players on a journey of exciting competitive play and surprising new content. It's a year characterized by one word...

HOPE: YEAR 4 SEASON 1

After so many signs, all believed the end of times was nigh. Yet the earth quieten down without warning, the skies cleared and a new dawn came.

At long last, warriors felt hope and remembered those who once fought for peace.

For the first time in history, the leaders of all factions gathered and agreed to cease their quarrel for a brief moment.

They signed what was called the Truce of Wyverndale.

BATTLE PASS

Introducing For Honor's Battle Pass, which will come with a free tier along with a premium version.

The Battle Pass will be in addition to the Content of the Week we normally have. It's available for all heroes, and the gear you unlock will depend on your level. You can apply your cosmetics later on as you progress with your designated hero.

Everything in the Battle Pass is purely cosmetic, and will not affect gameplay or the competitive scene (but you will look extra cool during event streams). You'll also have a roadmap of all the content that will be available from within the Battle Pass since you'll be able to see all the content available from Tier 1 to 100, even without the tiers unlocked. So hop in and check it out!

Did you start with the free Battle Pass and can't help but go for premium? Purchasing a premium pass will unlock all past tiers you already got with the free version!

FASHION UPDATE: WEAPON THEMES AND ARMOR SETS

At long last, Year 4 Season 1 introduces new armor sets! This is a time of peace in the world of For Honor, and Knights, Vikings and Samurai finally have access to the resources and time needed to create beautiful ceremonial armor variations. Meanwhile, the Wu Lin have crafted entirely new sets to enjoy!

To commemorate, the team is introducing themed colored weapons and brighter armor sets inspired by Hope to bring For Honor's fashion to the next level! More armor will be coming out throughout the year, so keep an eye out for some epic new sets!

Click the image below to check out the latest weapons and armor:

What do you think about the new themed weapons? Let us know on Reddit!

COMPETITIVE UPDATE: DOMINION SERIES

We are excited to announce For Honor Dominion Series, a competitive program comprising of NA and EU teams with events spanning Year 4.

These will include a series of online PC tournaments which will culminate in a LAN/offline event – one mid-year and one at the end of the year. The year-end event will crown the overall For Honor Champions.

The program will kick off at the end of Season 1, so stay tuned soon for more details on how to participate and qualify for the finals!

Of course, even if you don’t want to participate, there will be broadcasts of the tournament to give everyone a chance to participate in the competitive scene. We will be taking a close look at everyone's feedback on the program to further improve and grow it, so make sure you stay connected.

Oh and of course…The year will include a prize pool!

Now’s the time to step up and tell your war stories. Is your team the best For Honor Dominion team? Will you be crowned the For Honor Champions? Start recruiting, start grinding, join the For Honor Trials Discord and ramp up your Dominion skills. We’re looking forward to seeing who will come out on top.

UPCOMING PATCH NOTES

As the quality of play gets higher and higher, the team is constantly looking to finely tune the competitive balance and ensure every character has a fair shot at winning. If you have feedback on the performance of certain characters, be sure to fill out the Testing Grounds feedback form.

In this patch, we're looking to help some characters with their roll/catch moves.

Also, be sure to click the image below for a great explanation of Fuzzy Guard, a key competitive technique which lets you take advantage of a small window of opportunity where it's possible to guard against two moves at the same time. If you want to have a chance at winning the For Honor Dominion events, then this may be the technique you're looking for!

Pro-Tip: Having trouble with fuzzy guards or learning finishers? Join the For Honor Discord to learn all the finishers!

Patch notes are scheduled for launch next week, February 6th, where we'll have all details for you. Stay tuned!

NEW EMOTES

Our E3 Emote contest winner has been added to the game!

You can also pick up the Toss a Coin Emote for 3999 steel instead of the usual 7000 steel. Available until February 6th!

HOW THE FOR HONOR TEAM CREATES MINIONS

Ever wonder how a minion is borne into this world? From the sculpture to the in-game mesh and final textures, this is how they're made:

On the left is the sculpture that designers create as a framework for the final character. Once the final mesh (pictured right) is created, the designers are ready to apply textures to the model. Andrew Im, our Associate Art Director, walked us through the process and explained a bit about how this texture map helps with the final look:

From here, your minions are ready for battle!

We're excited to see all the wonderful matches to come in the official Dominion Tournaments!

TESTING GROUNDS

  • Testing Grounds is a tool that was implemented last year in Season 11 where players can test early changes the FH development team would like to introduce and provide feedback on them.
  • Testing Ground Phase can be accessed from the world map.
  • The content of the Testing Grounds won’t necessarily reflect what ends up in the live game as a result. The goal is to gather player feedback first in order to determine what will go live, and what will need further development.
  • Testing Grounds aren’t subject to only fighter changes. This Phase, we will introduce changes to Breach.
  • You can still group with teammates to go into MM.

FOR HONOR TRIALS
For Honors Trials is a community-ran discord server dedicated to improving players’ gameplay with coaching from top competitive players, organized scrimmages (practice matches), and more. It is open to all skill levels. Click here to join now.

🎄Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!❄️

FOR HONOR™ - [UBI]Insulin
Hey Warriors,

We know that you have been waiting patiently to know what’s going on for next year in For Honor. We are excited to announce, today, what we have planned for Year 4: The Year of Reckoning.

From launch three years ago to For Honor today, we are incredibilisly proud in the progress the game has made, none of which would have been possible without the unique relationship that we’ve built together with you, our players.

Year 4 is about learning and building upon what we have experienced together in these past 3 years. Let’s keep the party going!

We’ll be able to share more details in January 2020 but here is an overview of what’s in store.

Year 4 – The Year of Reckoning
The Year of Reckoning is a turning point in For Honor’s history. The great war that has been raging over the past years takes an unexpected turn. The earth has quietened down, but new leaders arise and warriors across all factions need to decide what they are really fighting for.

Four Unique Seasons and Two New Heroes Joining the Fight
Like Year 3, Year 4 will have four new Seasons, each with its own theme, rewards, and activities.

Two new faces will arise during the Year of Reckoning. One Hero will be released during Year 4, Season 2, and the other during Year 4, Season 4. Their arrival will coincide with the storyline, as well as the events of the Year and its seasons. We can’t wait to find out which side you choose!

You will be able to purchase them upon release or unlock the new Heroes with steel as usual.

Seasonal Progression Update: Battle Pass in, Year Pass out
Starting with Year 4, Season 1, we will be introducing a new reward system with the For Honor Battle Pass.

In the past, rewards relied solely upon random drops after matches and scavenger crates, which gave little visibility on the items you were able to unlock.

Now you will have clear objectives throughout the 100 tiers within the Battle Pass where you will be able to unlock items through gameplay. The battle pass will be limited to character customization items and consumables meaning that you do not need to purchase it to have access to the two new heroes coming during the year.

The For Honor Battle Pass will consist on a Free pass and a Premium pass, with a shared progression across the different tiers and resetting with each new Season.

Everyone will have access to the Free pass and its rewards. In the Free pass, you can unlock items such as ornaments, steel, color swatches, champion status, embossings, and more.
Owners of the Premium passes will have access to unique customization rewards such as new signatures, new weapons, new executions, new effects, and more.

Both free and premium passes will have rewards for all heroes.

It was also important for us to make the Premium pass an addition to, and not a substitute for, the existing means of getting content in the game. Thus, we will be keeping original options for players with new content of the week, sales, and scavenger crates /drops at the end of the matches to get customizations items.

We will have more details to share on the Y4S1 Battle Pass and the season itself in January 2020.

Fight - Core Experience
With 26 heroes in the current roster and two new faces joining the fight in Year 4, balancing remains a top priority for us. This includes hero balancing, of course, but also game mode balancing.

A major step toward strengthening our process of balancing has been the introduction of Testing Grounds.

For Year 4, you can expect this tool to have a big role in how the dev team continues to bring changes to the game. The focus of the year remains on increasing character viability, allowing for a wider range in team composition at a higher level of play, and continue to improve offense to enhance the core gameplay of For Honor on a more general level.

Competitive
The competitive nature of For Honor has been part of the experience since the get-go. One of the main reasons why the competitive scene has continued to grow over the years is thanks to you guys who have supported it at a grass roots level. Year 3 was the first step in better supporting the tournament/competitive scene of For Honor, with more visibility on community tournaments, in-game prizing, but most importantly the introduction of the spectator mode.

The competitive scene is extremely important to us as it is to you. It helps us grow the community and is ultimately a compass in shaping the experience of the game. It is a pillar which we intend to expand on in Year 4 with a new all-access competitive program set to launch.

More details will be shared soon.

More to Come
We will expand on all of these elements in January as we get closer to launch of the Year of Reckoning, we are really excited for what this year has to offer!

Lastly, we want to thank you for all the creativity that you guys have shown us over the past 3 years. Whether it be cosplays, fan-fiction, memes, videos, and fan art; we felt inspired for Year 4.

That is why we will be working with renowned artists for each season’s iconic image,
starting with the Year 4 image below, made by the American illustrator AJ Frena. Representing the Year of Reckoning, we are proud to be able to share her piece of art with you all today and cannot wait to share more details later in January for what’s to come in For Honor.

Oh! And one last thing… new armors are coming this year.

Happy Holidays Warriors,
For Honor Dev Team

FOR HONOR™ - Ubi-RealDude

Hello Warriors! Welcome to this installment in our ongoing series of State of Balance, where the Fight Team analyzes the results from the just-completed season and discusses where we are headed in the future.

In this blog, we will share data on the Win Rates and Pick Rates of our heroes with you, the community. We will also look at the data to discuss our perspective on certain balance issues, and where we see it heading over the coming seasons.

(To read more about the methodology of the data presented, click here.)

Now, let’s get to the data!

DUEL
DUEL FULL POPULATION WIN RATE

DUEL VIABILITY VS PLAYSTYLE TABLE

Note: In this State of Balance, we use the version of the “Viability vs Playstyle Tables” that was posted on 2019-October-30. These Viability Tables are the community-created tool to replace the Tier Lists, and you can find the latest version here.

Hitokiri and Raider perform highly in Duels across both Full Population and Platinum-or-Above. This Player Data is in-line with the Community’s Viability Table – both Hitokiri and Raider are listed as being Strong in Duels. Hitokiri is especially high, sitting at 68% win rate in Full Population and 61% in Platinum-or-Above. They both received nerfs in Year 3: Season 4 (Raider’s Stunning Tap change, Hitokiri’s Uninterruptible Stance timing nerf, damage nerfs to both), and as such we will be closely monitoring to see where they end up after their changes.

Uninterruptible Stance / High Damage Heroes appear to have a large presence at the top of the Player Data. Most heroes who appear at the top of the Player Data Charts seem to have one or both of these traits. This seems to suggest that these properties (especially when combined on heroes such as Raider or Hitokiri) are very strong when used in the context of Full Population or Platinum-or-Above play in Duel. The main outlier is Berserker, who has an Uninterruptible Stance but appears quite low in Full Population play.

Raider, Hitokiri, Lawbringer, Black Prior and Conqueror all show up roughly at similar locations high up in the Player Data and the Viability Table. This suggests that these heroes are both strong in competitive gameplay as well as Full Population. We’ve already made changes to Raider and Hitokiri this season, and we’ll monitor how these changes affect their viability and see if we need to further act on other heroes as well.

Jormungandr appears rather high on both sets of Player Data, but low on the Viability Table. We’ve seen that, at a competitive level, Jormungandr’s gameplan is inconsistent as top level players are able to react to more threatening attacks. At the Full Population level, this becomes much more difficult, and frustration with the hero remains high as players struggle to deal with the melee attacks. In Year 3: Season 4, we have adjusted the recovery timing of the opening lights, in order to fix an issue where it would be impossible to dodge the melee finisher in certain cases; we’ll see what repercussions this will have in the future.

Warden, Berserker and Shaman show up much lower in both sets of the Player Data than in the Viability Table, where they are placed as Strong. One theory for Full Population players is that they might approach Duels much like they approach 1v1s in Dominion, which makes them throw out big attacks much more often and take more risks, whereas competitive players tend to play it safe and are much more patient.

Reflex Guard Heroes appear at the bottom of the lists. Orochi is leading the pack in both sets, despite being listed as Weak in the Viability Table. We’re keeping an eye on this situation.

DOMINION
DOMINION FULL POPULATION WIN RATE + TOP 4% WIN RATE

DOMINION VIABIBILITY VS PLAYSTYLE TABLE

The top half of the Player Data for Dominion for Full Population and Top 4% is essentially the same, with some minor position switches. This shows a high similarity at these different levels of play. Similarly to Duels, we see that heroes with Uninterruptible Stance and/or high damage perform at the top of these Player Data sets.

Raider and Hitokiri appear near the top of the Player Data for Dominion (just as they did in Duel), and we shall see how the nerfs applied at the start of Year 3: Season 4 affect them.

Reflex Guard Heroes appear to be having a difficult time in Dominion. All Reflex Guard heroes currently appear at the bottom of the Player Data. We’re keeping an eye on this as it is a trend that is problematic.

Mid Heroes (a role defined in the Community’s Viability Table as a hero that maintains control over the minion lane) fall into a rather similar rank in both the Player Data and Viability table, with the exception of Aramusha, who still ranks higher in the Player Data. This, similarly to Roaming heroes, shows that control over the minion lane is generally well-understood.

Side Point Heroes (a role defined in the Community’s Viability Table as a hero who is strongest at taking and holding side points) are generally defensive heroes that are able to stall at points and hold them for long periods of time. The overall ranking of these heroes is similar in both the Viability Table and the Player data with the exception of Jormungandr, who is higher in the Player Data. Typically this also indicates that Side Point gameplay is understood, but most Side Point heroes are in the middle to bottom of the Player Data. We’re keeping an eye on this as we want to ensure that we have heroes that are still viable on Side Points.

Roaming Heroes (a role defined in the Community’s Viability Table as a hero that rotates around the map and helps as needed) has a high similarity in heroes that perform at the top of the Player Data and the Viability Table. It appears as if Roaming is a role that is well understood at all levels of play.

Ganker Heroes (a role defined in the Community’s Viability Table as a hero that can quickly kill a single opponent with the help of a teammate) appear to be much stronger in organized competitive play than in solo queuing. The Community Viability Table defines Shaman and Gladiator as Strong in that role, but Player Data had both appearing very low. While this difference in behavior makes intuitive sense, owing to the difference in team cohesion and coordination between full population games and competitive play, there is quite a large discrepancy between the results of the Player Data and the Viability Table when it comes to Shaman and Gladiator.

BREACH

BREACH FULL POPULATION WIN RATE + TOP 4% WIN RATE

Generally, it appears that Breach Player Data appears quite similar to Dominion. The one major difference is that Nuxia appears to fall considerably more in Breach Top 4% Win Rate than in Dominion, presumably because her fight kit and Caltrops are much less effective in a context with Pikemen.

Note: There is no Community Viability Table for Breach – so it’s not included in this blog for that reason.

CLOSING NOTE

We would love to hear more from you on the results of the Player Data for Full Population, Platinum-or-Above, Top 4%, as well as the Community Viability Tables. Please remember that we look at all this data, information, feedback, and a whole lot more when we make our decisions.

Keep sending us your feedback, and we look forward to sharing the next installment of the State of Balance!
