Our Alec had a lark when he romped around stabbing knights and samurai as a viking (a viqueen?) in Ubisoft’s sword ’em up For Honor [official site] and soon more of us will get a go. Ahead of For Honor’s launch on February 14th, Ubi have announced a closed beta test will run from January 26th to the 29th – and you can sign up for a chance to get in. The mewling pup that goes by the name 2017 will come into the world soon and we must prepare ourselves for its arrival. Here at RPS, our preparations come in the form of this enormous preview feature, which contains details on more than a hundred of the exciting games that are coming our way over the next twelve months. 2016 was a good one – in the world of games at least – but, ever the optimists, we’re hoping next year will be even better.

In this Community Profile we meet the terror of the Iron Legion, Pandaego. Anyone who has met his Warden on the fields of battle in our live phases has grown to fear and respect him. We chat with him below about his thoughts and experience in the world of eSports, and how that brought him to For Honor.

1. What’s your name (can be your real name or your online name) and where are you from?

My name is Jared "Pandaego" Fletcher. I am from Washington State near Seattle.

2. What faction do you align yourself with?

I am a Knight. I love the design and armor of the knight characters and apparently I enjoy playing them too! Warden has been my favorite warrior that I have played so far.

3. When did you first hear about For Honor and what was your reaction?

I am a pretty late passenger on the For Honor hype train. I did not even know the game existed until one of my friends at Ubisoft invited me to participate in a recent game test and I went in with zero knowledge or expectations. After a few hours with the game, I was like "This game was made for me". It has everything I love about games: strategic, team-based combat and it felt very innovative which is something that I had stop expecting from AAA titles. It also is visceral in a way that I have never experienced in any other multiplayer game. I can confidently say it is one of my favorite games ever and probably only have 50 hours in it from the betas.

4. What was it about For Honor that compelled you to get involved in our community?

The community involvement came pretty naturally. I haven't been this addicted to a game since World of Warcraft and you guys just took that away from me after giving me a taste. So instead of playing I cope by talking to everyone I can about the game. As an added bonus the community (obligatory Hall of Heroes shoutout) has been very inviting and friendly which can be rare in multiplayer focused games, so it was very easy for me to stick around and make a lot of new friends.

5. Are you active in other online communities?

Is this a special passion for you? I am definitely passionate about For Honor but am also involved in all sorts of different internet microcosms. I played Dota 2 competitively for a few years and have been a fairly active member in that community. I also work for Chrono.gg working with tons of cool Twitch streamers and Youtubers which allows me to find my way into awesome new online communities on a daily basis.

6. In a past life you have been an esports player, captain, and coach. What from that experience do you find you can bring to our game and community?

I learned a lot about esports, competition, and team dynamics from Dota 2 and they certainly apply to For Honor as well. My greatest hope is to see For Honors community continue to develop the way it has been because it has been a refreshing change of pace. There are a lot of good attitudes that I have come across in For Honor which is something that I, unfortunately, cannot say the same about Dota 2. I used to be one of the worst offenders when it came to a bad attitude due to my competitiveness, but now I hope I set a good example in For Honor for other community members and show them that you can be competitive and still be a positive influence on the game.

7. Do you have a favorite character to play with from the 6 that were available in the Alpha?

Why is that one your favorite? The female warden was my favorite from the alpha. I haven't quite figured out what drew me to that character so much, but I think it was a bunch of little things. I love her movements, both in combat and out, as well as the cosmetic choices for her. Also, the warden is the starter character of For Honor and I feel obligated to master her toolkit before I move on to other warriors.

8. What do you hope your biggest contribution to the For Honor community will be?

Someone has to be around to knock HandheldBrando down a peg. In all seriousness though I just hope to be a positive influence on the community as a whole. I would love to participate in or help facilitate a competitive scene in For Honor because esports is something I am very passionate about in just about every game that I play.

9. How would you describe For Honor, in your own words, to a friend who never played the game?

I would just tell them to buy it. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I will guarantee their purchase! If you can say you like even one of these things you need to play this game because once you do you will buy it:
  • High fantasy
  • Knights
  • Vikings
  • Samurai
  • Tackling things
  • Any form of martial arts
  • Video Games
  • Competitive sports/games
  • Air, like breathing it

10. You were invited to the Montreal studio to meet the For Honor team and represent our community there. Can you describe the experience?

It was awesome to see the man behind the curtain so to speak. Meeting many of the people responsible for making such an awesome game took away a bit of the mystique behind it, but it more than made up for it by making the game a lot more personal for me. In hindsight, It was a totally unique and surreal experience and I just want to use this chance to personally thank all the people working hard at Ubisoft to make this incredible vision a reality.

11. Is there any advice you could give to a new warrior who wants to play?

Do it. It is such a blast to play and I am sure many of the people taking the time to read this are already giddy with excitement for this game. Trust me it will be worth the wait. In terms of gameplay, take it slow. Button mashing is the quickest way to get yourself killed in For Honor and defending is critical to the Art of Battle combat system. Focus on defense when you first start playing and take the time to learn the right moments to attack.

12. Is there any music you would recommend while playing the game?

I love all sorts of music but it is hard to go wrong with any epic music playlists. Just search for some movie trailer/game trailer music playlists and go to town.

13. Outside of gaming, what are your hobbies and passion?

Work and games keep me pretty busy but I try to occasionally leave my house to work out and hang out with friends. I enjoy sports(mostly soccer and football) although I exclusively watch as opposed to play nowadays. Aside from my obsession with gaming, I am relatively boring. Oh and anime. Ya I am just a nerd.

14. If you were a member of the Beatles, which one would you be?

Definitely the rhinoceros beetle. What a cool beetle.

For Honor will be available on February 14, 2017, for PlayStation®4 system, Xbox One, and PC. For more info about For Honor, please keep an eye on ForHonor.ubisoft.com and be sure to visit our official forums and Facebook.

I like Ubisoft’s obsessive need to cram story into everything, not because their stories are good, but because their stories are required to justify some pretty odd concepts. For Honor [official site] pits vikings against samurai against knights in a game primarily designed for multiplayer melee, but of course there’s a singleplayer and co-operative story mode which tells the story of how these various blade-fanciers came to fight one another. There’s a trailer below. … [visit site to read more]

One of the goals of our community content is to connect our players to For Honor via the many real world touchstones the game calls upon for inspiration. In this "Tale of Weapons" series of articles, we will explore legendary weapons that are either historical or mythological, which inspire our team's creation of the weapons wielded by the Knights, Vikings and Samurai of For Honor.

In this 6th installment of our Tale of Weapons series, let’s go back to the Vikings faction with Gram (which means “wrath”), a mysterious sword from Norse mythology. Everything about Gram is based on fables and stories, as no information places the weapon in a historical setting. We need to take a look at the Volsunga Saga to understand the sword’s backstory. The Volsunga Saga is an Icelandic tale from the 13th century, written in prose. It tells the story of the Volsung clan and their struggle to defeat other clans and obtain power. Among many tales, the saga features the story of Sigurd defeating the legendary dragon Fafnir. That story gave birth to the legend of Gram, the sword of Sigurd.

Sigurd was a Germanic hero featured in many Norse stories and fables. He is the son of Sigmund, who was killed by none other than the god, Odin, disguised as a warrior under King Lyngi. Odin is a widely revered god associated with healing, death, royalty, the gallows, battle and poetry. He is often pictured with his long beard, his one functional eye and a sorcerer hat. He’s also well known for his own legendary weapon: the Odin’s Spear that may be the topic of a future article.

Odin the Wanderer, by Georg Von Rosen (Public Domain)

According to the legend, Sigmund was at his sister Signy’s wedding, when a strange man appeared carrying a sword. The man thrusted the sword into the Barnstokkr tree that was in the middle of the hall. He said: “The man to pull out this sword from the trunk shall receive it from me as a gift and he will find out for himself that he never bore in hand a better sword than this.” It was then revealed that the mystery man was Odin himself, and this was a test to find the strongest and most honorable warrior in the hall. Every man attempted to pull the sword out of the tree, but Sigmund was the only one able to do it, very easily. King Siggeir offered Sigmund a lot of gold in exchange of the sword, an offer Sigmund always refused, making Siggeir very angry and secretly plotting against him.

Sigurd slaying the dragon Fafnir, from Old Norse Stories (Public Domain)

Sigmund fought multiple battles with Gram until it was broken during his final battle with Odin. His wife kept the two remaining parts of the blade for years, and offered it to her son Sigurd who was training with the dwarven smith Regin. And that’s where Viking mythology meets the Japanese culture, as Sigurd performed the same test as seen in our Honjo Masamune article, by throwing a piece a wool up a stream, and waiting for the piece to be sliced through by the blade. Just like his father, Sigurd fought a lot of successful battles with the sword, which granted him luck and power.

After the epic battle with the dragon Fafnir, there is no more appearance of the sword in literature. The story, dates and names differ depending on the sources, but Gram was a widely celebrated tale in the Norse mythology. Today, an old runestone in Sweden dating from more than 1000 years depicts the story of Sigurd killing the dragon with Gram.

Our Community Profile series intends to spotlight members of the For Honor community who are doing cool things, both inside our game and out. Want to see yourself here? Come participate in our Forums or Subreddit, meet us at events, or share your cool creations with us on Twitter or Facebook!

In this Community Profile we talk to the very talented Taelonar. We got to know him via his presence on the Australian leg of For Honor’s world tour this year. It’s hard to miss a real-life Warden standing imposingly in the game’s booth! Learn more about the man and his armor below!

1. What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Morguhn Baxley, but online I go by the name Taelonar. I was born in Germany to American parents but I have lived most of my life in Australia.

2. What faction do you align yourself with?

I align myself with the Knights because I feel that they represent duty, honor and protection of the weak. I have always loved the armor that Knights wear and when you fight in it you truly feel unstoppable.

3. When did you first hear about For Honor and what was your reaction?

I learned about For Honor from a YouTube video previewing upcoming games at the end of 2015. As soon as I saw it I was immediately hooked. The beautifully gritty visuals, accompanied by the intense yet thoughtful combat really grabbed my attention. I have been fighting with martial weapons for over 10 years with my training partner Shaun who is a Federal Police Officer and For Honor is the closest thing I have ever seen to real combat in a video game. The Art of Battle system is truly revolutionary.

4. What was it about For Honor that compelled you to get involved in our community?

For Honor just speaks to me on a level that no other game has before. Maybe it’s because of my interest in medieval fighting or my competitive nature but I have never been so excited about a game in my life. So, when the Community Reporter Contest was launched in early 2016, I was super keen to enter and win a trip to E3, to meet the minds behind the game and get a chance to play it. That’s what started my involvement in the online community.

I decided to dress up as the Warden to make my video application more unique. I already had most of the armor because of my medieval fighting hobby, so I went with it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t selected but that’s ok because a few months later when I returned home it all worked out. Some of the guys at Ubisoft Australia saw my Warden cosplay and invited me to a special event evening in Sydney where I finally got to play For Honor. Not only that but they invited me to the EB Games Expo as a promotional partner, which gave me special behind the scenes access to the videogame convention for the whole weekend.

I really wanted to do a good job promoting the game at the event as a way of saying thank you, so I stepped up my cosplay. I painted up all my armour in defender colors and it turned out great. The weekend at the expo was amazing. I hung out at the Ubisoft booth meeting fellow fans of For Honor and getting pictures taken with them. I got to play more of the game and the best part, I actually got to meet the creative director of the game, Jason Vandenberghe. I got to speak to him about the game, ask him questions and he even signed a poster for me. It was one of the best weekends of my life!

5. Are you active in other online communities? Is this a special passion for you?

This is definitely a special passion for me. Before For Honor came along I had never gotten involved in a gaming community before. I do share photos of the miniature soldiers that I paint online through various websites like Flickr and Deviant Art but I’ve never really considered myself a part of an ‘online community’ until now. I’ve been following the development of the game, communicating with other fans through Twitter and Facebook, and I have watched hours and hours of For Honor videos on YouTube. I have especially been loving the gameplay videos from the closed Alpha.

6. You have become known for a really amazing set of Warden armor that you have customized. Can you tell us how you created it?

First of all, thank you for saying that my cosplay is amazing. Knowing that you guys like it makes it worthwhile. You know when I first saw the Warden I totally fan-girled out. I was blown away because I had spent over ten years slowly collecting bits of armour to use in my weapons training hobby and along comes this game with a character that has armour just like mine. Once I decide to try and perfect my Warden outfit I downloaded your cosplay guide to get a better look at all the aspects of the character.

To me the heart-plate was tricky as I had never seen anything like it before. So after watching a couple of instructional videos on YouTube I constructed a homemade forge in my backyard out of some junk, like a rusted metal barrel, a pipe, bricks, a hairdryer and few other bit and pieces. Then I reforged a small shovel head into the heart-plate. I am a high school English teacher not an armor smith but I did my best.

Next I got my hands on a blue and white tabard from Epic Armoury and got MTthreadz, an artist on Etsy to make me some custom Dire Wolf patches for the heraldry. After that I was pretty happy with my cosplay until I received the invite to the EB Expo and decided to step up my game and paint the armor.

After further studying the cosplay guide and other pictures of the Warden I used masking tape to cover all the edges of the armor, the rivets and any places that I wanted to appear to be battle damaged. I also taped up the leather straps to make sure they remained free of paint. Then I painted the pauldron (shoulder guard) I was planning the cross design for completely blue and the other completely white, with three coats each of spray paint. After the paint dried I used masking tape to make a cross on the blue pauldron and a wide central strip on the white pauldron. After that I sprayed them each with three coats of the opposite colors. After removing all of the tape I traced a basic template of the tree design on the right pauldron and then painted it free hand with a small brush.

I did the face-plate the same way except it detaches from the helmet and I was able to tape off half of it at a time which made it very easy.

7. Do you consider what you do cosplay, or is your interest more in historical reenactment?

I would say somewhere in the middle. My interest is in medieval fighting. Trying to learn to master fighting with and against different weapon combinations and in different types of armor. I’m just so glad that For Honor gives me a way to live out my warrior fantasies to their fullest.

8. Are there other characters from the game that you would like to build a costume around in the future?

Absolutely! In fact, I have also put together a Berserker cosplay, though it’s not as impressive or accurate as my Warden outfit, but I’ll keep working to improve it. Now if I could only put together a Nobushi set, I would be able to cosplay my favourite warrior from each faction.

9.What do you hope your biggest contribution to the For Honor community will be?

I would like my biggest contribution to the community to be becoming one of the most skilful players in the world. I have never been into first person shooters or played an online competitive multiplayer game. I feel like For Honor is going to finally give me the opportunity to show my quality and play to a competitive eSports level. When somebody sees Taelonar standing across from them on the battlefield I want them to know fear.

10. How would you describe For Honor, in your own words, to a friend who never played the game?

For Honor is the closest thing to real martial combat that you have ever seen in a game. It has a combat system based on skill not button mashing and grinding. The multiplayer aspect is going to be incredible. There are three factions, Vikings, Knights and Samurai with four warriors from each to choose from and all of the twelve characters play very differently from one another based on what kinds of weapons they are wielding.

11. Is there any advice you could give to people who want to get into creating their own armor/costumes?

Do your research. Don’t just pay something off as too difficult, there are lots of instructional videos out there to help you along the way. Also if you can’t make it shop for it, sometimes that one piece of gear can set off your entire outfit and bring the wow factor, making it worth the expense.

12. Is there any music you would recommend while playing the game?

I’d recommend something instrumental and medieval like the soundtrack from the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian.

13. Outside of gaming, what are your hobbies and passion?

Well besides the weapons training and gaming, I love to paint miniature soldiers, Age of Sigmar in particular. I even won the ‘Armies on Parade’ competition in 2015 at my local Warhammer store in Penrith. I’ve already started my entry for next year’s contest so wish me luck ;)

14. If you were a member of the Beatles, which one would you be?

I think I’d be John Lennon, I always considered myself the philosophical type.

For Honor will be available on February 14, 2017, for PlayStation®4 system, Xbox One, and PC. For more info about For Honor, please keep an eye on ForHonor.ubisoft.com and be sure to visit our official forums and Facebook.
