Exciting stuff! Recently, ArsTechnica released an episode of War Stories series - and this one is really important for us, because it brings up the topic of This War of Mine's development process.
Aleksander Kauch, our lead game programmer for This War of Mine, goes behind the scenes of the game's development and explains how we have turned a management sim into a visceral experience about civilians at war. You can watch the episode here: https://youtu.be/FNrCAWVKVQ0
"This War of Mine is a game defined by its cultural roots—it is a Slavic game, created by people from Central Europe who grew up hearing stories of Nazi occupation from their grandparents. It lacks most of the hallmarks of more stereotypically "Western" stories—there isn't a happy ending or even a particularly neat resolution. It is not a game designed to give you a quick dopamine hit of joy or to tell a complex tale of good and evil. Instead, it is a game designed to make you feel something—to evoke emotions and then to force the player to confront and contemplate those emotions."

And before you ask: yes, the Ep. 3 of This War of Mine: Stories is coming. We're currently working on some really cool materials that we want to show you in a matter of weeks.
On top of that, we're working hard with Dead Mage team to release Children of Morta! In the meantime, you can learn some new stuff about the game here or here. And if you like what you see - be sure to add it to your Steam Wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/330020/Children_of_Morta/
Every day we are getting closer to the reveal of the next chapter in This War of Mine: Stories.
Before that happens we’re thrilled to tell you where we’re going with it. However, you know how we are, we do not tend to spoil too much but we can say the new Story is going to introduce brand new mechanics, probably the biggest change in “classic” This War of Mine experience. This game speaks distinctly through its gameplay so adding something new vastly enriches the way you can discover it. And again, like two previous expansions, it is going to have a strong original plot driving the entire story - but there’s still a bit too early to tell you what the exact theme is. Yet, we want to make a big bang and shake This War of Mine universe - the game is 4 years old, after all! Hence, trust us, the main theme is very powerful.
Here’s Tomasz, Lead Artist behind the expansion, working on a new location. You need to know not only new mechanics are on their way, but new locations, unique shelter and unfamiliar people (civilians and soldiers) to meet, too. We’re very excited to bring those additions to our loyal This War of Mine community - and we hope you are delighted to hear about them as well.
That should go without saying - but every Season Pass owner will get the new Story for free. And what you can see on the header image of this announcement is actually the new shelter. Take a look, try to guess what we’re working on and stay tuned as more info is coming soon.
Best, 11 bit studios

PS. As you may know, we are also very excited about this year's release of Children of Morta - a story driven adventure game from our publishing portfolio. We are proud to report that our hit game, This War of Mine has recently hit the major milestone of 4.5 million units sold over its lifetime.
The indie hit about the harrowing life of civilians in a besieged city during times of war has performed successfully on all platforms (PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android), and can be attributed as the big boost that helped put 11 bit studios to the forefront of indie publishers on the scene.
Starting with a single unit sold on Christmas Island, the game's community is widely global with players from coast to coast on every continent! Named by the New York Times as a game that “lets you safely explore wretched realities of the human condition”, and described as “a nightmare you shouldn't miss”, This War of Mine was also picked as one of the games of the year by The Guardian, Die Welt, El Mundo and many other mainstream media when it was released in 2014.
The game’s successes don’t stop there with This War of Mine winning awards at the Independent Games Festival, the SXSW Cultural Innovation Award, Games For Change and over 100 other awards. Dedicated to paying it forward, we have also donated $500,000 to the charity War Child through sales of the This War of Mine DLC.
Not content to sit back on our heels, we are now offering a new standalone story-driven expansion, This War of Mine: Stories - Father's Promise on both iOS and Android for only $1.99. Grab it here or here!
Thank you for being with us on this amazing journey!
We are pleased to announce that This War of Mine: Stories - Father’s Promise is now available on both iOS and Android as a premium stand-alone game.
One of the most successful indie titles of the last decade, the original This War of Mine framed the experience of war from an entirely new angle - the punishing struggle of civilians. This War of Mine: Stories - Father’s Promise is a stand-alone story-driven tale set in the universe of the original game. It tells a story of family's struggle to preserve the last pieces of humanity in times of despair and cruelty.
Become Adam - a father trying to save his daughter from the horrors of war and escape the besieged city. Follow their steps and discover a story of love, hate, and sacrifice - the emotions we all share in the darkest of days.
It is about time that we update you with current progress on the next story in This War of Mine: Stories DLC.
The first and most important thing is: everything is going amazingly well! We are very happy with the storyline, locations and characters so far. And while we're keeping the topic of the third episode still hidden (there will be more updates later this year), we also felt that we have to share some work-in-progress stuff and give you a glimpse of how the development process looks like. Let's begin.
Meet Jacek. In real life, Jacek is the art producer for Frostpunk, our another game that you probably know (and if not - here a link). As you may have heard, all soldiers and civilians in This War of Mine have their physical appearance based on ourselves, our friends, family members and colleagues. We've been doing it on purpose, to make characters as believable and lifelike as possible. Not some anonymous 3d models, bought from an asset store, or shiny Hollywood-like models, but real people. Bald, skinny, chubby - just like ourselves. And one of the characters in the upcoming story is going to "inherit" his appearance from Jacek. Please note we're not saying if he's going to be a playable civilian, or a non-playable side-character. You'll get to know it later.
On the photo above, you can see Olaf, working hard. He's our 3d artist - and at the moment he is creating a digital sculpture of Jacek. Later, this model will be implemented in the game itself, using our Liquid Engine (it is the same engine that Frostpunk uses, btw!). Remember that a model with so many details may not be visible for you in-game - however, for us: the more detailed the source, the better and easier it is to create a moody, great-looking experience in This War of Mine universe. Naturally, more characters are being created... and just to tease you - yes, new locations are in the works, too! Some of them already look stunning and we hope to share some visuals with you pretty soon.
In the meantime, stay tuned for more updates about the third episode of This War of Mine: Stories!
More than 4 300 children received help thanks to 11 bit studios and War Child UK charity cooperation.
On November 14th, 2014 the indie smash hit This War of Mine had its premiere and that date has become special for at least one more reason. On that day, 11 bit studios joined forces with War Child, a British charity organization dedicated to helping children affected by conflict all around the world. Together, 11 bit studios and War Child created charity DLC which added war-themed works of world-famous graffiti artists to the game. Players could buy the DLC for a set price and 100% of the net income was donated to the charity. Today, more than four years after launching the initiative, we can demonstrate what has been achieved with this cooperation.
Since the launch on November 14th, more than $500,000 has been donated to the cause. This money helped to support War Child deliver its programmes across countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen:
3 Temporary Learning Spaces were established where 260 children were able to carry on with their education and exams to complete their school year
Place 26 unaccompanied children with foster families in Bambari, Central African Republic
In Iraq – provide summer schooling to 457 students
In Afghanistan - Support 840 children aged four to six to access Early Childhood and Care Development in Kabul and Herat
Expand our child helpline in Democratic Republic of Congo, which received 14,557 calls in 2017 and 2,215 children were referred to specialized child protection organizations
Fund a new fundraising arm at War Child dedicated to working with gamers, which has raised over $2.5 million to date
None of this would be possible, without the help of the players. We would like to thank you all.

since the release of The Last Broadcast DLC - we had to temporaliy disable some functionalities, like modding tools and game controller support. But we're happy to tell you that they are back!
We're proud to announce that our brand new DLC, The Last Broadcast, is out!
The Last Broadcast tells the story of Malik, a radio broadcaster carrying on his sworn mission to keep the people living in the war-torn city of Pogoren informed about everything that may be vital to them. This story-driven DLC based on a scenario from Meg Jayanth (writer of IGF-winning game 80 days), circles around a difficult theme of the price of telling the truth. Featuring new playable civilians, new city sites, and new gameplay mechanics exploring the areas of one’s morality, The Last Broadcast is the biggest expansion to date in This War of Mine universe. Check out the brand new gameplay trailer below: https://youtu.be/ufAx89ptcX4
This War of Mine: Stories - The Last Broadcast DLC offers:

With your stories, emotions, and feedback - you are the ones who are really responsible for this success. We wouldn't be here without an amazing community.
Thank you.
Note: the Mac + Linux versions, modding and game controller support for the DLC are coming soon. Give us few days - it should all come in one, nice patch. Sorry for the delay.
