Launching today, we wanted to shake things up a little with our next update - No Man’s Sky: INTERCEPTOR - to bring a new gameplay experience, and also expand the lore of the game. Full patch notes are available here.
A new corruption has spread through the universe, blighting planets, bringing new enemies, new resources and a new Starship class, which is our most varied Starship to date.
Here’s just some of what players can expect from INTERCEPTOR:
Hugely Varied New Starship - expand your fleet by salvaging your perfect Sentinel ship, or collect a whole range of Interceptors.
Corrupt Worlds - many worlds have succumbed to corruption, with strange crystals sprouting from the earth, and sentinel guardians twisted into bizarre new forms. Explore these purple-hazed worlds to find new buildings, crashed interceptors, secret equipment and more…
VR Improvements - watching players on our new PSVR2 version has inspired us to add a whole bunch of improvements and new features for VR including wrist interface controls, improved visuals and more.
New Enemy Types - including huge spider-like enemies and their small crab-like children, plus new corrupted drones. These combat machines are some of our most lethal, armed with stealth tech, flamethrower and explosive weaponry.
New Tech - Interceptor ships are powered by unique new Sentinel technology, such as the Anti-Gravity Well and Crimson Core, requiring new resources to construct and fuel. There are new Sentinel Multi-Tools and a large winged Sentinel jetpack too.
Custom Wonders - inspired by how players have enjoyed the Wonders Catalogue from our previous update, so now you may curate your own collection of favourite discoveries with the Personal Records section of the Wonders catalogue. Bookmark spectacular planets, bizarre alien creatures, favourite flowers and more.
Sentinel Capital Ships - huge Sentinel Capital ships feature compelling space combat, and an ultimate goal for weaponry heavy ships. Defeating Sentinel freighter is incredibly bombastic but also clears your “wanted” status and earns new high-value rewards.
Performance and Visuals Improvements - our engine team is continually improving performance and visuals on all formats.
INTERCEPTOR launches today, free for existing players. Full patch notes here.
The enduring success of No Man’s Sky is due to the continued energy and creativity of this small team, but also to you - our welcoming community. We are tremendously grateful for your continued support of us and our journey.
We can’t wait to show you what else we’ve got in store for 2023.

We’re excited to let you know that today we are releasing our first major update of 2023. We’re calling it Fractal (version 4.1). Full patch notes are available here.
All players can earn a stunning new starship, the Utopia Speeder, which allows travellers to skim across planet surfaces at high velocity. We’re also launching a new Expedition - “Utopia” - which challenges players to work together and rebuild an abandoned solar system for the mysterious Utopia Foundation. Other expedition rewards include an exclusive new helmet (the Fearsome Visor), a robotic drone companion and much more.
Steam Deck now supports gyroscopic controls, making exploring and scanning new discoveries more comfortable and precise than ever.
Speaking of which, the Wonders Catalogue shows off your most incredible discoveries, from tallest mountain to strangest creature, giving explorers a detailed record of their journey and allowing players to compare their records with fellow travellers.
We’ve also overhauled the game’s options for all platforms, introducing a raft of new accessibility features and giving players even more control over the way they play and experience the game.
The Fractal update brings a huge number of improvements and new experiences for everyone.
That’s already quite a large update, but there’s lots more! We’ve always been incredibly passionate about VR. No Man’s Sky is about exploration and there’s nothing quite like exploring the infinite universe in virtual reality. Our game has changed a huge amount since our small team introduced VR support back in 2019, and we were so excited to revisit and overhaul all virtual reality for all players.
Fractal brings a large range of improvements and quality of life changes for all VR players. Here’s a brief list of some of the features players old and new can expect when slipping on a headset:
Play the entirety of No Man’s Sky in Virtual Reality without compromise, with new levels of immersion.
Switch between VR and standard gameplay. Continue from an existing save to revisit favourite planets, bases and creatures in full virtual reality.
The HUD and user interface has been completely remade for virtual reality, to ensure every interaction available in the game feels natural and built for purpose. Including controlling Multi-Tool options via a menu embedded on the in-world Multi-Tool; and browsing the quick menu and inventory via a personal wrist-mounted display.
Lift open your starship’s cockpit, then reach out and grab the controls to take flight. Turn around for a full 360° view of the starship and vehicle cockpits, with incredible details only visible in VR.
Many interactions have been given special VR-only options, including: grabbing plants and other collectables with your hands; physically opening the cockpits of ships and exocraft; piloting starships directly with a VR stick/throttle; and punching objects to cause damage.
With complete head and hand tracking, interactions in virtual reality make No Man’s Sky more intuitive, tactile, and immersive than ever. Physically unholster your Multi-Tool from your shoulder. Intuitively aim and fire at targets, or put it away to engage in combat with your fists. Tap a button on your headset to toggle the Analysis Visor, then point towards fauna, flora, and minerals to scan and discover them.
2022 was a pretty packed year for No Man’s Sky with major free updates like Sentinel, Outlaws, Leviathan, Endurance and Waypoint, plus a bunch more of our popular expeditions, whilst also launching on Steam Deck and Switch. We’ve got an even bigger year planned for 2023, with Fractal marking just the starting point.
2022 marks our sixth year in the life of No Man's Sky and it has been one of the busiest yet.
In February we released our first ever handheld version of No Man's Sky day and date with Steam Deck. It has been amazing to us to consistently see us in the Top 10 most played games since then.
From that point on, there has been no stopping our small team. Four major updates have dropped (taking our total since launch to 21!)
No Man’s Sky SENTINEL allows you to fight alongside your own personal robotic companions and battle an array of new foes! Introducing a total overhaul of weapon systems; new lore and stories; all-new Sentinel enemies and combat behaviours; the ability to reprogram and adopt your very own friendly AI drone; and much, much more!
With the OUTLAWS update comes the opportunity to be an interstellar rebel! Introducing outlaw systems; the ability to recruit your own squadron of pilots; improved space combat; a stunning Solar Sail Starship, and much more!
No Man’s Sky’s 20th free update, ENDURANCE, reimagines the experience of being a freighter captain, with a total rework for space bases that allows you to build visually spectacular structures upon your very own capital ship.
WAYPOINT (4.0), No Man’s Sky’s 4.0 update, is an overhaul of fundamental gameplay elements including game modes, inventory size and usability, milestones, journey cataloguing and much more!
We also continued with the ever-popular community missions (and the associated rewards and Twitch Drops), clocking up 4 expeditions, including the gargantuan LEVIATHAN.
We also welcomed a swathe of new Travellers into the game when we performed a minor miracle by releasing the Nintendo Switch version in what people are calling one of the best ports for the platform:
In addition to all that, we also found time to announce that No Man's Sky is in development for macOS and PlayStation VR2, the latter coming as a free update in February 2023 day and date with the PSVR2 hardware.
In 2021, to close out the year, we re-ran the year's expeditions in a reduxed format over the holiday season to give people another chance to experience these events and reap the rewards when time is perhaps a little more available. That proved to be very popular so we are pleased to announce that we are doing it again. Here are just a few of the rewards you can earn:
And here are the dates:
Expedition 5 (Exobiology): 24th Nov - 8th Dec Expedition 6 (Blighted): 8th Dec - 22nd Dec Expedition 7 (Leviathan): 22nd Dec - 5th Jan Expedition 8 (Polestar): 5th Jan - 18th Jan
Plans are well underway for 2023 and we look forward to sharing what we've been working on in the new year.
2022 has already been a pretty packed year for No Man’s Sky with major free updates like SENTINEL, OUTLAWS, Leviathan and ENDURANCE, plus a bunch more of our popular expeditions. We’ve also brought the game to SteamDeck, where it has become surprisingly popular, as well as announcing MacOS and PSVR2.
We are on the cusp of releasing No Man’s Sky on Switch, and as if that wasn’t challenging enough we are also releasing a large update across all platforms… 4.0 update launches across PC, SteamDeck, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox and PC Game Pass, VR and... Nintendo Switch! I think we might now support more platforms than we have people at Hello. :)
We’re calling 4.0 WAYPOINT. It is our 21st major free update and it launches today. Waypoint brings an overhaul of design and balance, including inventories, milestones, cataloguing and game modes. It also introduces hundreds of community-favourite quality of life improvements, both macro and micro. Full patch notes can be found here.
Inventories have been overhauled, with ships, weapons and players having their level cap greatly increased. Survival, crafting, combat and controls can now all be customised to cater for travellers’ unique play styles.
Relaxed mode brings a new focus on sandbox exploration for travellers old and new. Meanwhile returning players are welcomed by a new information portal with a summary of their goals and progress.
For long-term players, a new milestone system, new collectibles and improved mission content brings new extended goals and challenge. With new streamlining and balance, Waypoint allows players to enjoy twenty major updates as a more cohesive whole.
This is hopefully the best time to be a No Man’s Sky player, whether you are a new explorer who benefits from our Relaxed Mode, a returning player who is welcomed back by a more cohesive gameplay experience, or a core player who is excited for the increased level cap and hundreds of quality of life improvements.
The leap from version 3.0 to 4.0 is perhaps our biggest generational jump so far. It’s an exciting moment, and marks a solid foundation for future updates.
Starting as we mean to continue, No Man’s Sky launches on Switch with its first major update, and it’s no coincidence that many of our changes are focused on making No Man’s Sky a more pick-up and play experience for new and returning players on that mobile platform (and this streamlined approach benefits all platforms).
The Nintendo Switch has been a real achievement for our small band of technical wizards and I’m so proud of their achievement. We are constantly striving to ensure that No Man’s Sky is the best it can possibly be whether you’re playing on the highest spec PC or in VR or now on the Nintendo Switch.
Full patch notes for Waypoint (4.0) are available here.
A celebratory Twitch Drops campaign runs from Thursday 13th October through Monday 17th, and a special anniversary hoodie is available in our merch store here.
Last week, we released our 20th major free update for No Man’s Sky, ENDURANCE.
When we first added freighters to the game back in the FOUNDATION update, we could never have imagined we’d be here, reimagining them, six years later – we had no idea what was ahead of us! Full patch notes for Endurance can be found here.
We’ve loved watching folks assembling their fleets of organic frigates, and it has been tremendous to see the base building community’s imaginings coming to life with the new freighter building capabilities – constructing huge botanical chambers, medical bays, engine rooms, and even expansive cities on their freighter’s exterior!
Polestar Expedition
Today, we are launching the game’s eighth community expedition: Polestar. Embark on an interstellar cruise as the captain of a heavy shipping freighter, warping your metal fortress across the galaxy.
During the voyage, Travellers will repair the freighter’s bespoke technology, and uncover the mysterious circumstances that led to its current predicament…
After completing all the required expedition milestones, you may now end the expedition early and convert your progress to a Normal Mode save. As with previous expeditions, when Polestar concludes, this save conversion will happen automatically.
Polestar’s limited edition rewards can be redeemed across all save games from the Space Anomaly’s Quicksilver Synthesis Companion.
The Polestar expedition begins today, and will run for approximately six weeks.
Polestar Expedition Rewards
Pilgrim, Polestar, and Heavy Shipping Posters
Decorate freighter and planetary bases alike with these three commemorative posters – dedicated to all spacefarers, navigators, explorers and freighter crew.

Claim the Child of Helios egg, and invite this beautiful, spectral creature to haunt your journey through the universe.
Community Research
The Quicksilver Synthesis Companion continues to tirelessly craft new exotic collectables, unlocked by Travellers completing Nexus missions – including the new Sentinel Pillar and Infestation combat challenges.
Most recently, the Cosmic Flight, Orbital, and Ship Catalogue Posters have become available.
The next set of items to be synthesised, starting today, is this exciting set of freighter exhaust customisations: the Antimatter, Golden, and Hadal Freighter Trails.
Exchange Quicksilver for exotic collectables aboard the Space Anomaly. Complete multiplayer the missions at The Nexus to contribute towards unlocking collectables, and earn Quicksilver from the specially-marked daily or weekend missions.
Development Update
Patch 3.97, which contains a number of gameplay and stability fixes, is being released today and will be coming to all platforms as soon as possible. The team are currently taking some time to address issues reported by the community, but we have so much more packed in for 2022! The release of No Man’s Sky on Nintendo Switch, PSVR2, and MacOS are all just around the corner, and we have already started on new content and surprises for later in the year.
Thank you, travellers, for staying on this journey with us.
It has already been an incredibly busy year for No Man’s Sky with the release of SENTINEL, LEVIATHAN, OUTLAWS and SteamDeck - and Switch, PSVR2, MacOS and more coming very soon!
Today, we are releasing what is probably our biggest update of the year (our 20th major free update). Perhaps fittingly we’re calling it ENDURANCE, and the focus is on freighters, frigates and fleets. Full patch notes are available here.
We introduced the ability to own and captain freighters in our very first update, FOUNDATION, and it’s something we’ve been excited to take the opportunity to completely reinvent. Captaining a fleet to explore the unknown has always been core to that fantasy of science fiction, from Battlestar to Starfleet, and it’s a huge fan favorite.
ENDURANCE brings a complete overhaul of freighters and fleets, allowing players to live and work aboard their home in the stars, together with their own crew. A new bridge brings a range of quality of life improvements, with instant access to warping and teleportation. Players can now build vast freighter bases on a scale not seen before, with specially themed areas and new features for growing food and manufacturing, and new technology like the ability to scan and analyse planets from space.
One of the most striking changes is to asteroids, which are now more varied and appear in vast fields, with thousands on screen at once. There are new Interstellar-style black holes, nebulae, and space atmospherics to explore. Travellers can enjoy these new incredible space vistas from windows and portholes, which they can now build on their freighters. Players can also build exterior sections to their freighters, for increased flexibility, or just to admire the universe from.
There’s also a new expedition to enjoy, “Polestar”, focused on a capital ship voyage, as well as new combat-focused Nexus missions, and a new Twitch Drops campaign.
To celebrate ENDURANCE, we are releasing another set of woven expedition patches on the {LINK REMOVED}merch store.
We're also doing a limited re-run of Christopher C. Castillo's awesome {LINK REMOVED}playing cards such was their popularity last time.
And don't forget, No Man's Sky for Nintendo Switch launches on October 7th worldwide as a physical and digital edition. Pre-order now at all discerning game stores.
ENDURANCE coincides with No Man’s Sky’s 6 year anniversary and it remains amazing to us to see players still clocking up a bewildering number of hours in the game all these years later. We are eternally grateful for the support.
It’s been such a thrill to see players enjoying our most recent major update, OUTLAWS. Whether it was hunting down pirates for lucrative bounties, becoming an intergalactic smuggler yourself, seeking the treasure of The Blight in the most recent expedition, or just stylishly exploring space in a cape - it's been a delight to watch you all take to the skies.
Today, we are very excited to bring you No Man's Sky's latest expedition: Leviathan. We aim to give every expedition a unique character and style of gameplay, but we think Leviathan feels especially different. Full patch notes can be found here.
The Leviathan Expedition Our seventh expedition traps Travellers inside a time loop, and offers a taste of roguelike gameplay. Difficulty is tuned to survival-mode settings, and every death means a reset of the loop.
As players explore the loop, they will recover Memory Fragments, lost remnants of previous loops. These manifest as procedurally generated technology, meaning each reset of the loop may play out very differently.
Faced with such difficulty, players across the world can collaborate with each other to even the odds. Alongside their personal efforts to break the loop, Travellers can help Specialist Polo as they research the loop's peculiar manifestations.
The more Travellers that participate in the research, the stronger the Memory Fragments become, manifesting in better upgrades, more inventory space, and stronger Multi-Tools and starships.
Expedition Narrative As players seek a way to unbind the time-loop curse, they will find a story-driven adventure at the heart of the expedition.
Follow the trail of your previous iterations, absorb memories, investigate significant sites, and work together to escape from the curse of the loop. Shattered memories all point towards an encounter with an ancient space creature, The Leviathan - but will Travellers succeed in reshaping history, or are they doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past?
The Leviathan expedition begins today, and will run for approximately six weeks. Begin a new Community Expedition game to enter the loop, and earn a generous assortment of limited-edition rewards. When the Leviathan expedition concludes, your progress will be converted to a Survival Mode save. Phase rewards can be redeemed across all save games from the Space Anomaly’s Quicksilver Synthesis Companion.
Leviathan Expedition Rewards Remember your time in the loop with a trio of base decorations - the Leviathan, Loop, and Timesplice Posters.
The Temporal Starship Trail can be fitted in your ship to modify propulsion energy, and leave a visually mesmerising streak of temporal disturbances.
The sweeping Whalestalker Cloak was once worn by an ill-fated Traveller, obsessed with their quest to capture a cosmic leviathan and doomed to repeat the chase for all eternity.
Rehome an Organic Frigate Calf in your base. This mysterious creature is enclosed in a chrono-preservation field to ensure it remains eternally young, playful, and a manageable size.
Finally, the space giant itself - The Leviathan - may be recruited as an organic addition to your capital ship’s frigate fleet.
Development Update We hope you enjoy the Leviathan expedition as much as we enjoyed putting it together! Alongside the expedition, today's update includes a number of improvements and bug fixes. Full patch notes can be found here, along with community highlights and information on a special new merch item, the Traveller's Deck, designed by a member of the community, Christopher C. Castillo!.
The team is continuing to work on even more features and content for No Man's Sky, and we will have more news for you soon.
Yesterday, we released the OUTLAWS update for No Man’s Sky, enabling the pirates of the universe to better retaliate against the SENTINEL authorities upgraded earlier in 2022. After we revisited and refreshed planetary combat in SENTINEL, it felt like a natural progression to improve ship handling and combat, and deepen pirate-related gameplay throughout No Man’s Sky. The passionate community response is always fantastic fuel for us – it’s exciting to see you all claiming and piloting the new Solar Ships, fighting against or aiding outlaw forces, and swishing around in capes.
The new expedition, Blighted, aligns with the piratical theme of OUTLAWS. Travellers will follow the trail of a pirate faction known as The Blight and their mysterious treasure, gathering clues and decrypting milestones. Expeditions give us an opportunity to mix up different styles of gameplay, and this fast-paced treasure hunt should again feel a little different from previous expeditions.
The Blight are alert to the presence of Travellers seeking their riches, and have already taken hostile measures to trap would-be treasure seekers on the radiated hills of Issh 77/R6. Restore your compromised ship to embark on a journey across exotic stars and ocean beds, into the heart of Sentinel and outlaw territory – and ultimately, for those who persevere, to The Blight’s legendary pirate treasure.
The Blighted expedition begins today, and will run for approximately five weeks.
Begin a new Community Expedition game to join the treasure hunt, and collect exclusive, limited-edition rewards along the way.
When the Blighted expedition concludes, your progress will be converted to a Normal mode save, and rewards can be redeemed across all save games.
Blighted Expedition Rewards
Sputtering Starship Trail
This ramshackle ship exhaust nozzle was hand-assembled in an emergency by an outlaw. Has an occasional propensity to explode, but with no adverse effect on flight handling.
Outlaw-Themed Posters
Transform your base your base into an outlaw’s sanctuary with these pirate-themed posters – celebrating all things anarchistic and rebellious.
Exclusive Flag Designs
This range of exclusive flags provide a variety of decoration choices for bases, to suit a range of tastes – from the delicate Heraldry Flag to the bold Piracy Flag.
Wayward Cube
This cubic lifeform drifted into an orbital station from another reality, where it was captured by a travelling merchant. Provides placid companionship when rehomed in a habitable base.
Outlaw Cape

Our next update for No Man’s Sky is never far away, and though the team is taking a moment to celebrate the release of OUTLAWS and the Blighted expedition, we are continuing to work tirelessly on new content and features!
