We’re very excited to be able to tell you more about No Man’s Sky: Beyond. A major free update coming in summer 2019 and the next big chapter in our journey.
Beyond is the culmination of several different strands of development. The first component, No Man’s Sky Online, was announced a few weeks ago. A dramatically updated multiplayer experience means players will be able to explore and play together like never before.
As creators of No Man’s Sky, we are in love with everything sci-fi. Virtual reality feels like a science fiction become real, and has always seemed like a perfect fit for this futuristic game of ours.
It’s completely unique to land on a world that no-one has ever seen before and to really feel as if you’re there, and the team has worked so hard to make this a true VR experience rather than a port.
Grab the joystick and thruster to fly your starship over an unexplored alien planet as you peer out of the cockpit at the view below. Reach into your backpack to grab your multitool, touch it to switch to terrain manipulation, and carve out intricate shapes with unprecedented control. Play in multiplayer and casually wave to your non-VR friends or fist bump your VR peers.
No Man’s Sky Virtual Reality is not a separate mode, but the entire game brought to life in virtual reality. Anything possible in No Man’s Sky, NEXT or any other update is ready and waiting as an immersive and enriched VR experience.
No Man’s Sky Virtual Reality, like all the parts of Beyond, will be free to existing players. No Man’s Sky Virtual Reality will bring the experience to PlayStation VR and Steam VR, and will be released simultaneously on both platforms.
By bringing full VR support, for free, to the millions of players already playing the game, No Man’s Sky will become perhaps the most owned VR title when released. This amazes us, and is utterly humbling. The team is working so hard to live up to the expectations that creates. We are excited for that moment when millions of players will suddenly update and be able to set foot on their home planets and explore the intricate bases they have built in virtual reality for the first time.
As well as Online and Virtual Reality, No Man’s Sky Beyond contains a third major feature set that we’ll be talking more about when we can.
This is an exciting time. Thank you so much for being with us on this most ambitious chapter of No Man’s Sky.
We know that there is a lot of hunger out there for news and updates on No Man’s Sky. We wanted to share some information from behind the scenes.
Our next chapter will be called No Man’s Sky: Beyond, coming Summer 2019.
Each chapter for No Man’s Sky has been more successful than the last. Thanks to our community, NEXT our large release last year was especially so. It went on to bring enjoyment to millions of new players, and it helped to change the legacy of this game we care so much about.
Earlier this year, whilst working on our roadmap of three future updates, we decided we wanted to interweave their features, and had a vision for something much more impactful.
We are excited to announce that Beyond will contain those three major updates rolled into one larger free release.
The first component of Beyond we are announcing today is No Man’s Sky Online.
No Man’s Sky Online includes a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together. Whilst this brings people together like never before, and has many recognisable online elements, we don’t consider No Man’s Sky to be an MMO – it won’t require a subscription, won’t contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players.
These changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of NEXT, and is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time.
We will talk more about each component when we know we can be precise, and look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks.
Beyond will be our most ambitious chapter so far, and something we’ve been working ridiculously hard on. We’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.
It’s unexpected but so rewarding to see so many accolades and nominations for No Man’s Sky as Best On-going or Most Evolved this year. To some NEXT may have felt like a natural end-point for our journey, but for us it was another step on a longer voyage.
It's already been a very busy month for us! Today we are releasing a new update for No Man's Sky, which includes a new Community Research mission, more customisable flora for your base, a terrarium, a striking new Gek-inspired helmet, and a number of minor gameplay fixes and improvements. More on that below.
You may also have heard that last week we announced The Last Campfire - an adventure about a search for meaning and a way home, developed by a tiny subset of our small team. We're yet to announce platforms, but the game is available to wishlist on Steam now.
Community Research Update
Earlier this month, many thousands of Specialist Polo's friends worked together, across multiple realities, to contribute floral discoveries to a mass data pool. Biological information about alien plants was funneled into the Space Anomaly, and ultimately into the Quicksilver Synthesis Bot, where the data was processed into generating additional items to reward dedicated researchers.
While Polo has concluded their current investigations into the changes rippling through the universe, this boundary-defying data has had another, unexpected result. Polo's synthetic companion, inhabiting the back room of the Space Anomaly, has autonomously tapped into the broadcast system. Independently of their Gek master, they are reaching out for explorers to carry on expanding the Anomaly's databanks with new research data, via a variety of means: participants may choose to collect rare materials, explore the universe, or eliminate threats.
As before, universal progress may be tracked from the Galactic Atlas website, and submitted data will power the synthesis of further collectable items.
From the Quicksilver Synthesis Bot
Tier 1 Items
Three customisable base plants will unlock at tier 1...
The large-leafed Sail Palm, native to hot climates and naturally impervious to intense sunlight.
The slender Globe Tree, so named for its spherical reservoir root bulb.
The Rock Garden features a neat arrangement of flora and minerals, both luminous and matte.
Tier 2 Item
The terrarium is a small observatory unit designed to house a small alien specimen for study and companionship. Specimen is included with domicile. To avoid undesirable specimen-to-specimen interactions, a limit of one terrarium per base is recommended.
Tier 3 Item
The Helmet of the First Spawn, inspired in form by the war helms of ancient Gek, lends a battle-hardened appearance to Anomaly explorers.

There is still so much more to come in the new year, with a large portion of our team working towards further major updates for No Man's Sky. We look forward to seeing you out there.
Thank you so much, Sean

It's now been a week since we released Visions, and we're so happy to see players discovering and enjoying the new colour palettes, exotic landscapes, flora and fauna, and new rare items and curiosities to collect! We think we've succeeded in enhancing the sci-fi aesthetic of No Man's Sky, and making the universe a little bit stranger - something we hope to continue doing in the future.
Today, we are releasing a patch to address a few gameplay and stability issues. We also wanted to write a small development update to highlight some community activity and reflect on the status of the ongoing two-week research mission.
Community Research Update
Specialist Polo and Priest Entity Nada have detected another shift in the fabric of realities - an aftershock of the universal regeneration that occurred only a few months ago. Dead planets have awakened and twisted into strange new environments, and Polo invites their explorer friends to first discover the anomalous flora sprouting on one of these exotic biomes, then discover as much flora as possible across the entire universe.
Perhaps as another result of this aftershock, something has changed in how the Space Anomaly is receiving and processing data. The boundaries between realities are weaker than ever. The discoveries of all Traveller iterations now contribute to a cross-reality data pool, and universal progress will unlock additional items at the Quicksilver Synthesis Bot.
Progress may also be tracked from the Galactic Atlas website.

It’s quite amazing to look back and realise that since July this year we have released over a dozen free updates for No Man’s Sky.
NEXT was our largest update ever, introducing third person play, multiplayer, massive enhancements to base building, frigate fleets, and much more. Then in October, we added the Pilgrim exocraft and made a number of general improvements to exocraft - including customisation, and a new buildable summoning station. Later that same month, we released another update - The Abyss - that focused on eerie underwater visuals and gameplay, adding new environments, story missions, the Nautilon submarine, and more.
We’re never quite sure what to expect when we release these updates, and the positive response from the community means so much to us. It’s an essential part of our journey to listen and respond to the voices of our most passionate players, and so a little over a month ago, we created a survey inviting you to share your favourite aspects of the game with us and help us shape its future. One request that particularly stood out was the desire for stranger and more varied planets to explore.
Today, we’re very excited to be releasing our third named update for the year: Visions. This release concentrates on the planetary visuals of No Man’s Sky - adding to the variety of weird alien landscapes and the strange creatures living there, as well as the incentives for exploring these worlds.
Visions is available now, for free, for all No Man’s Sky players. We hope you enjoy this next step in the journey! Full patch notes are available here.
We're so excited to announce that a large free update for No Man's Sky will be releasing tomorrow! No Man's Sky Visions introduces new biomes, rainbows, more colourful worlds, new fauna and flora, archaeology, salvaging, fireworks, and much more...
Visions will be releasing on Steam in time for Thanksgiving, and we have plenty to be thankful for. We were delighted to be nominated for “Best Ongoing Game” for The Game Awards - alongside some games we are in awe of - and we deeply appreciate the positivity, passion, and support from the game’s incredible community. These ongoing free updates are a little show of gratitude from us, and more will follow.
Full information about No Man’s Sky Visions is available here.
Thank you so much for the positive response to The Abyss update for No Man’s Sky, released only a few days ago. We’ve really enjoyed seeing players experiment with the new base parts, explore the enhanced aquatic environments in the Nautilon submarine, and share their close encounters with fearsome underwater predators.
The team here is keeping up the pace this week with another update, patching up a few issues and introducing the next Community Research mission.
Community Research Update
This week, Priest Entity Nada is reaching out to explorers for assistance with Polo’s research missions. Their Gek friend, rattled by the events revisited by the time-altering device, has fallen into an introspective mood, and appears to have withdrawn from the project. Nada intends to act fast to overcome this - with help from their traveller friends across the galaxies.
Nada requests that explorers travel to a strange, colourless planet, and photograph underwater fauna in the darkest depths there. They conjecture that evidence of life enduring in the harshest of conditions will be of comfort to Polo, and - hopefully - will work to restore their usual upbeat disposition.
From the Quicksilver Synthesis Bot
Polo’s synthetic lifeform has generated a number of new collectibles for explorers to trade their Quicksilver for. Several new marine-themed decorations for bases are available, all with customisable palettes...
A living colony of delicate curly coral.
A cluster of aquatic crystals, featuring an unusual marbled colouration.
A luminescent candelabra bloom.
A barnacle that can be placed to encrust the walls of traveller bases.
And a new underwater gesture is also available, to aid underwater communication between aquanauts:

A new free update has released today for all No Man's Sky players. We've called it The Abyss, because it's a seasonal update and reimagines underwater gameplay, focusing on some of the eerier elements of No Man's Sky.
No Man's Sky NEXT launched just a couple of months ago. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response. We are excited to be on this journey with you.
We have been adding new free content, community missions and improvements to No Man's Sky every week. From small features like allowing players to customise body shape, to large gameplay additions like the Pilgrim motorbike, and companion features such as addition of discovery leaderboards to the Galactic Atlas, allowing the community to track progress between factions.
While we continue to add these quality of life enhancements and small improvements to the game, we are also still releasing major titled updates, starting with The Abyss.
The Abyss introduces aquatic environments with over 5 times more variety, varied creature behaviours, improved underwater visuals and much more.
Here are some things you might notice from the trailer...
FLORA AND FAUNA
The variety and visual quality of underwater biomes has been greatly improved. Experience rare exotic aquatic biomes as you explore new depths.
Underwater creatures have become more frequent, and more interesting. Aquatic life inhabits the full depth of the ocean, and unique terrifying creatures can be encountered on the ocean floor.
AQUATIC MISSIONS
A new story, The Dreams of the Deep, brings a new context to the depths and a dark narrative to No Man’s Sky. Discover the fate of a troubled crew stranded from a freighter crash by the rising tides, or explore underwater ruins to uncover the tale of a lost soul trapped deep beneath the waves.
SUNKEN WRECKS
Investigate sunken ruins and find ancient treasures, or dive to submerged buildings to find remnants of their lost occupants. Discover and scavenge lost cargo from gigantic freighter wrecks. Use the terrain manipulator to excavate treasures buried in the nearby ocean floor. Find and repair rare crashed star ships to restore them from the seabed to the skies.
SUBMARINE
Master the depths of planets using a new Exocraft, the Nautilon. This submersible vehicle gives new meaning to underwater navigation, combat and mining – and can be summoned to any ocean on the planet, as well as docked at underwater buildings. Upgrade your submersible with installable Submarine Technology and customise the Nautilon to stand out from your fellow explorers.
SUBMERSIBLE BUILDING MODULES
Over a dozen new base parts have been added to unlock more creative possibilities underwater. Construct the new Marine Shelter for brief respite from the oceanic pressure, and use its protection to reach new depths. New glass corridors, viewing bays and multistory submersible view domes provide travellers the perfect view of the surrounding ocean, and a decorative indoor Aquarium brings aquatic life into your habitat.
We hope you enjoy this and what follows – and we look forward to meeting you out there! Our journey continues.
No Man's Sky NEXT launched just a couple of months ago. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the positive response. We are excited to be on this journey with you.
Over the months since release we have been adding new free content, community missions and improvements to No Man's Sky every week. From small features like allowing players to customise body shape, to large gameplay additions like the Pilgrim motorbike, and companion features such as addition of discovery leaderboards to the Galactic Atlas, allowing the community to track progress between factions.
We have enjoyed posting weekly development updates and highlighting some of what players are up to in our game. It's so gratifying, and often quite touching, to see how No Man's Sky and the community have grown and evolved.
We've been listening intently, and are hard at work on fixes and improvements. We wanted to share a little news from behind the scenes.
Whilst most of the team have been busy on weekly updates, a handful have been working on something else, our first titled update since NEXT.
A new free update is releasing next week for all players. We've called it The Abyss, because it focuses on some of the eerier elements of No Man's Sky, in keeping with the theme of this season.
This is another small step on a longer journey for us. Thank you for joining us.
We've had a tremendous response to last week's Explorer Feedback Survey. Thank you for all the intelligent and passionate responses, and for helping us paint a clear picture of the community's preferences and priorities. The survey will remain open for a little while longer, so there is still time to contribute your perspective and help us shape the roadmap for No Man's Sky.
Community Research Update
Specialist Polo has at last emerged from the most involved data analysis they have ever undertaken - followed up by a more physical challenge in their workshop, crafting a new device to move this mystery forwards. They are exhausted and disoriented, but triumphant: they have identified the exact origin of the logs left by their lost Traveller-friends, ultimately a question of "when", rather than where.
Polo requests that participating explorers apply this specialised device to a number of transmission devices on a specific world, characterised by oversized flora. They hypothesize that, with the right time-tuning, and well-considered decisions, it may be possible for explorers to influence events occurring outside of the present moment...
From the Quicksilver Synthesis Bot
In the Space Anomaly, explorers will have several new items to exchange their Quicksilver for...
Bronze, silver, and gold editions of an Atlas Station statue, featuring a rotating core.
As well as 3 new customisable plants...
A carnivourous bush (direct skin contact not recommended).
A maize-like plant - "curious corn".
A squat dwarf palm.
Development Update
The team is hard at work on future large updates. We are so very close to being able to share something exciting with you, but we're going to contain our excitement and keep it under wraps for just a little longer, to make sure all the final polish passes are in place.
The patch notes for 1.65 are below. Thank you for playing and reading these updates!
