Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

Which game made you laugh the most? That's the subject of this weekend's Q&A. We want to read about the games that have made you chuckle or even double over with laughter, whether intentionally or not. While below you'll find that a few of our answers relate to games that are designed to be funny, most of them are multiplayer games that ended up being hilarious because of who we shared them with.

Let us know which game made you laugh the most in the comments below.

Tom Senior: Multiplayer Spelunky

Four-player Spelunky is a calamity of laughable fuck ups. Every dropped knife or misplaced whip can kill, and death is so fast and stupid in Spelunky it's impossible not to laugh. Even when three players are dead it's hilarious to watch the lone survivor battle through to the exit. Throw an angry shopkeeper into the mix and you've got total chaos. Games don't need jokes to be funny, sometimes some slapstick action works just as well.

Joe Donnelly: Broken Sword

Despite dipping my toes into Lucasfilm games in the '90s, Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars was the first point and click adventure game I played to completion. It was also the first game that made me laugh out loud (hysterically, while choking on a packet of salt and vinegar crisps/chips, for what it's worth). Co-protagonists George Stobbart and Nico Collard are hilarious on their own, but the quips and one liners they deliver together, bouncing off one another, are brilliant. I've replayed the first Broken Sword a couple of times since, and found these exchanges no less funny. I read this earlier, and wrote the above with a smile.

James Davenport: The Jackbox Party Pack 3

I actually brought my laptop to a bar and played it with my family over last Christmas. The experience taught me things about my parents I wish I didn't know, but mostly, it brought us together over absurdly stupid t-shirts. One of the included games, Tee K.O., is all about creating ridiculous t-shirts based on slogans and drawings people create. Over a few rounds of voting on randomized combos of everyone's slogans and drawings, the most ridiculous combinations rise to the top in a final battle. We closed out the damn bar, all of us in tears. I ended up ordering one for my mom (winning shirts can be made real using the power of money), Cynthia, a Midwestern preacher's daughter who was clearly out of her element and somewhat uncomfortable with the ideas manifesting from her adult children's brains. Let's allow the shirts to speak for themselves.

Wes Fenlon: Jazzpunk

Much of my youth was spent with friends laughing over Nintendo 64 games, but not so much the PC. In recent history, though, I was completely unprepared for how funny indie gem Jazzpunk ended up being. It's clever, it's absurdist, it's stupid, it's random, it's meta, it's ugly, it's beautiful. It's probably the funniest game ever made, honestly. Sorry, Tim Schafer. You're still really funny too.

Chris Livingston: Half-Life 2 Deathmatch

It's so fast and frenetic and there are toilets and file cabinets being flung everywhere turning players into ragdolls every two seconds. I remember laughing so hard the first time I played that I couldn't even seen the screen. It's just ridiculous and brutal being smashed and insta-killed by a flying physics object that sends you sailing through the air, limbs thumping and flopping everywhere. It's an absolutely goofy mode when you play it right (no guns except the gravity gun) and has more laughs per minute than games that are deliberately trying to be funny.

Andy Chalk: Ghost Recon Wildlands

I've spent a lot of hours playing Ghost Recon: Wildlands with a couple of friends from the PCG Discord, and every single foray into its grim, violence-soaked world has been excruciatingly funny. Much of it, like out-of-control motorcycle rides off of cliffs or unintentional explosions in the middle of stealth jobs, are "had to be there" moments that would probably just be irritating in solo play. But in a group, with the  right people, it's like Tier One Three Stooges out there. It's obviously not supposed to be funny, and players who want to get things done       might not have the patience for the slapstick shit show that follows in our wake. But for injury-inducing laughter, I really don't think you can beat a huge, firepower-filled open world that's happy to let players be stupid—especially one that presents itself as such a gritty, serious, Manly Man game.

This man is not amused by your shenanigans.

Samuel Roberts: GTA Online

I've made some foolish purchases in GTA Online, but the Vigilante, pictured above, is easily the daftest of the novelty vehicles in my garage. It's basically a Batmobile, if Bruce Wayne knew nothing about rocket boosters but attached one to his car anyway. Any time I jam that thing on with a passenger next to me, the car goes flying either into the sky, on top of a building or, most hilariously, into the ocean. That thing is way too light to be a Batmobile, but it was worth the money for all the fun times it's provided me.

GTA Online always provides high-end silly moments. If it spent less time loading and if some of the actual moneymaking activities were less of a grind, I think it'd be my perfect online game.

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

With Red Dead Redemption 2 due (on consoles) this Friday, GTA Online offers its players one last chance to earn double money on its western-themed bonus weapons.

If you're yet to complete the Double-Action Revolver and Stone Hatchet kill challenges, this means you're in for $1 million—$250K per challenge, plus an additional $250K a-piece "when you log in [next] week". If you've already obtained both, you still qualify for the latter payout at $500K all told.

Add this to the extra cash earned from Smuggler's Run Sell Missions—with double RP and GTA$—and you'll be well placed to capitalise on this week's vehicle, property and aircraft savings.

From back to front, my pick of this week's planes is the Spitfire-aping P-45 Nokota. With 35 percent off, it's going for $1,938,000 (combined with its trade price discount). On the property front, hangars are subject to the same 35 percent off; while the Declasse Scramjet is 30 percent less its normal price at $3,364,000 (again, with its trade price discount).

Ascertaining trade price there requires you win a round of the Hunting Pack (Remix) Adversary Mode, which I found somewhat lacking at launch earlier this year. Even on sale, the Scramjet isn't cheap either—and I personally prefer flying my Deluxo, or whizzing around on my airborne Oppressor. Nonetheless, the Scramjet's jet propulsion is neat, and requires Rocket League-levels of skyward skill to master. Good luck with that.

More on all of that lives on the Rockstar Newswire. As always, here's how to make money in GTA Online, should any of the above tickle your fancy.

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

I'm a sucker for Grand Theft Auto 5 visual overhaul mods, and none have captured my heart more than Jamal Rashid's Natural Vision Remastered. The result of several thousand hours of work, each update hits new levels of realism—and its latest, due to launch on Wednesday, is quite remarkable.

"My main focus in the newest NaturalVision Remastered update was to overhaul the Cloudy weather," Rashid, aka Razed, tells me via email. "I knew that editing this particular weather would be a massive undertaking which is why I left it alone until the very end. I took it upon myself to rework each hour of the day and balance it across the timecycle."

The results are wonderful:

Razed tells me the mod's new Cloudy weather purposefully leans into the incoming Red Dead Redemption 2's visual style, and he says he's pleased to finish the mod's latest update now so that "PC gamers around the world will have something to enjoy while everyone else is busy fiddling with their consoles" later this week.

He adds: "Usually the timecycle is divided into two regions (City and Countryside) so you can do more specific edits, but the file that controls cloud colors/cloud lighting is universal across both regions. As a result, I ran into some issues, but thankfully everything balanced out in the end.

"I also edited the cloud textures with some help from a friend in order to give the edges a softer look. A lot of this was inspired by the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 which I think looks absolutely stunning. I'm hoping that game comes out on PC next year because I'd love to mod it."

Aside from these tweaks, Razed says he's made several improvements to other weather conditions, and has fixed a host of bugs. At this point, Razed has spent a whopping 4,548 hours playing GTA 5—"the majority of those were spent modding." He tells me he's a bit burnt out on Los Santos, and that this update will be NaturalVision Remastered's last.

Razed says he's now ready to move on to something new, and I for one can't wait to see where he lands.

NaturalVision Remastered's latest update is due on Wednesday, October 24. Check out its GTA5 Mods page for more information.

Razed clearly has a good eye for GTA mod projects, and would like to point our attention to Bison Sales' GTA 4 Visual/Texture Overhaul, Orangebrains' Graphics Project, and Vosswar's 4K Roads and Graphics.

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

The PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 came with an optional first-person perspective at launch—but using it felt odd during cutscenes. In its vanilla state, they revert to third-person view, you see, which has always impacted my concentration. Why can't I view this short through the eyes of Michael, Franklin and/or Trevor, I've often asked. MrCrazyheat's latest project answers that call.

Aptly named 'First Person Cutscenes', MrCrazyheat's work draws inspiration from fellow GTA 5 modder person Jedijosh920's like-minded mission video

WARNING: Grand Theft Auto 5 mission and plot spoilers ahead.

Here's the mod in motion, first with footage from Franklin's The Long Stretch adventure:

And again with Michael's Bury the Hatchet:

And finally with the game's 'Deathwish' ending scene:

Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have successfully sought search and seizure orders from the Australian Federal Court in relation to alleged Grand Theft Auto 5 cheaters, Torrent Freak (via the BBC) reports. Two properties in Melbourne, Australia are said to have been entered, with five players said to have been involved with the now offline cheat software 'Infamous'.

As outlined by Kotaku Australia, 'Infamous', when active, cost around $40 USD and granted users access to a cheat menu used to generate infinite amounts of in-game cash, weapons, items, and health in Grand Theft Auto Online—and also let players teleport and instantly kill others in the same server. That can be seen in practice here.

Torrent Freak reports the Australian Federal Court has frozen the assets of the five people involved, who have not yet filed a defence. Named as Christopher Anderson, Cyrus Lesser, Sfinktah, Koroush Anderson and Koroush Jeddian, the five are prevented from creating or using game cheats, and are also currently prevented from withdrawing money from their frozen accounts—besides regular living expenses.

Torrent Freak links to an overview of the various orders, and provides the following snapshot pertaining to the particulars of the case.

From here, it is thought Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive will seek copyright infringement-related damages.

This week, GTA Online extends its Red Dead Redemption 2-related bonuses to October 29. Which means those who've already obtained the Stone Hatchet and Double-Action Revolver can claim a minimum of $500,000 of free backdated in-game cash; while those yet to complete these missions can net up to $1 million.

If you managed to complete all of that last week, though, this week's bonuses are Gunrunning, VIP/CEO, and stunt-focused.

"Kingpins and their cohorts profit handily this week with Double GTA$ & RP for completing VIP/CEO Work & Challenges through October 22nd," explains this Rockstar Newswire post. "Protect your Organization leader in Executive Search or plunder a rival CEO's Super Yacht in Piracy Prevention to score double rewards."

Likewise, Gunrunning Sell Missions are subject to the same double money/experience split, and bunker research speed is boosted 25 percent to boot. Mobile Operations Centre owners can also claim the equivalent RP and GTA$ prize from completed Weaponized Vehicle Missions.

And if daredevil-ling is more your thing, then cash in with Rockstar-created Stunt Races from now through October 22. They're also subject to the double RP-cash one-two.

The pick of this week's vehicle discounts is a no-brainer. The Dewbauchee Vagner tops our list of the fastest cars in GTA Online, and, with 30 percent off, it's a steal at $1,074,500.

A host of Gunrunning-themed properties and rides are also on sale this week across land, air and sea. My pick of those is Bunkers at 35 percent off—although I should say gunrunning is my least favourite way of earning big bucks in San Andreas.

My favourite ways of making bank are of course contained within our how to make money in GTA Online guide.

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

Last year, I described Jamal Rashid's NaturalVision Remastered as GTA 5's most impressive visual overhaul mod. I stand by that claim, but now reckon it's got competition. L00's PhotoRealistic San Andreas ENB is simply jaw-dropping.

Billed as an "all-in-one and sophisticated visual enhancer", PRSA is compatible with all weather and lighting mods, and applies custom shaders to "offer the most natural and realistic visuals possible."

The results are pretty spectacular, which are of course best portrayed in pictures.

More information on L00's PRSA GTA 5 visual overhaul mod, including installation instructions, can be found on its respective Nexus Mods and GTA5 Mods pages.

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

Signing in to GTA Online this week will net you a minimum $800,000 of free in-game money.

As announced by Rockstar, simply logging on to the multiplayer crime sim from now through October 15 will see $300,000 deposited into your Maze Bank account by October 22.

Completing its Red Dead Redemption 2-themed Stone Hatchet and Double-Action Revolver challenges will also net you a surplus $250,000 ($250,000 paid upon completion; the same again paid next week)—while those who've already obtained both can expect two complimentary $250K instalments upon logging on in during the next seven days.Broken down, that means players can expect a minimum of $800,000 without hardly lifting a finger; and $1.3 million by completing the RDR2 tie-in challenges for the first time.

Elsewhere this week, GTA Online introduces three new cars: the Karin Futo, Bollokan Prairie and the Imponte Ruiner. Here's those in order:

"The Karin Futo: A gift to a core demographic that needs nothing more than a lightweight chassis, rear wheel drive and dangerously poor traction to have some good wholesome fun."

"The Bollokan Prairie: Make any road your own personal Autobahn with Bollokan's first and only production car a compact, 2 seat sedan with more doors than safety features."

"The Imponte Ruiner: What happened in the 80's stays in the 80's. Unless what happened is a little slice of quad-exhaust, side-striped, T-top heaven in which case break out the big hair and the trickle-down economics, because we're going to town."

Nightclub earnings are doubled this week too, and all four recently remixed Adversary Modes are subject to double money and experience. This includes Hunting Pack, Running Back, Sumo and Trading Places—the latter of which I had fun with at launch

My pick of this week's vehicle discounts is the Ocelot Swinger. At 30 percent less its full price, it comes in at. Nightclub Add-Ons and Renovations for 25 percent off, on the other hand, mark my favourite property savings. You gotta hit me with those lazer beams

Grand Theft Auto V Legacy

Complex Control is the Grand Theft Auto mod equivalent of 'What if... but?'

What if... GTA 5, but with roguelite and battle royale elements, dozens of superhuman abilities, a century of characters, stats, permadeath and permanent progression? Oh, and decoy husky dogs best used to distract aggressors.

That's Complex Control. And if you're struggling to get your head around all of that, I don't blame you. Here's some moving pictures, courtesy of YouTube person Nerdcubed.

Complex Control is the result of over 1,500 hours of solo work, and, as outlined above, it transforms GTA 5's singleplayer mode beyond recognition. Creator Theaetik tells me they started work on the project in late 2016, as a means of learning C#. It was originally designed to be a "fully-replayable" multi-mission bomb defusal and hostage rescue mod, that pushed the boundaries of the crime sim's rambling sandbox. The project's scope, however, steadily "evolved in scale" during development.

With 100 idiosyncratic characters, 55 unique abilities, and a whole host of in-game systems and moving parts—not least levelling brackets and instant teleportation—this feels like an understatement.

"In the vanilla experience, the player's mobility is always limited to realistic functions," explains Theaetik. "You're going to have to climb ladders to get on rooftops, if you're ever lucky to have one available in the first place. Adopting changes like Teleportation and instant in/out vehicles allowed for the player to get in no matter where the enemy landed.

"It also makes for interesting moments, like teleporting out of an incoming rocket trajectory or just running down a series of enemies with an ability follow-up post teleport. Or maybe instantly get out of your vehicle before it gets blown up by an RPG. All of these factors made me realise it was the better approach for what I wanted to achieve."

Today, Complex Control boasts both roguelite and battle royale elements—although Theaetik stresses their interpretation of the latter leans towards survival. Those after a PUBG or Fortnight-like endeavour could look elsewhere.

"I always thought the shrinking circle aspect was interesting," says Theaetik, "but I never was a huge fan of vanilla BR myself for pacing reasons. After prototyping a survival/BR hybrid over the previous design I've had, I realised it just simply overall more fun to play, the final result was more convincing."

To this end, Complex Control is suitably chaotic—so much so, its self-indulgent disorder can overwhelm. During one particularly gruesome playthrough, I met my maker after teleporting in front of a lightning-fast, super-powered car. It struck me at force, and as if getting knocked 50 feet backwards onto my arse wasn't painful enough, a downed chopper then fell from the sky smack back on top of my crippled avatar. It exploded on impact. Obviously.

It was all difficult to watch, but these incidental, hedonistic flashes are not only Complex Control's bread and butter—they're also exactly what make it so much fun. I'd even go as far as saying dying can be as, if not more, entertaining than offing your enemies.

Having clocked up so many hours crafting such an ambitious solo project, I ask Theaetik if motivation is ever an issue. "Not if you enjoy playing what you're working on," they say. "Considering you're using your own personal free time, I personally can't imagine finding motivation on a project I'd hate playing."

Likewise, Theaetik advises like minded modders to spread their workload in order to prevent ideas from stagnating. "UI isn't looking the way you wanted? Work on the characters. Sick of working on the characters? Switch to implementing/designing sounds. You'll have a different mindset when you return and your productivity will not cease with your motivation in the end."

Theaetik underscores the importance of testing, and says fixing new problems as they occur is over and above the most challenging aspect of growing the project. The easiest? Spawning specific instant vehicles, props and assets—something Theaetik describes as the GTA 5 mod scene's "Hello World" moment.

This is perhaps best showcased in the above footage by Complex's insta-spawn husky dogs, who can be used as decoys for blood-thirsty enemies. It is however worth noting that, despite their cuteness, man's best friend is unlikely to save you from oncoming traffic and falling helicopters. Needless to say, I speak from experience here.

As for Complex Control's future, quality of life improvements and the introduction of new abilities currently top its To Do list. Despite how entertaining I reckon multiplayer elements could be, Theaetik has no plans to introduce multiplayer via open source channels such as FiveM.

"There are many reasons why [multiplayer wouldn't work currently], ranging from the way the mod is currently coded and the amount of logic-rewriting required, and my limited knowledge with multiplayer," says Theaetik. "The development process also requires players to test with. In the case we're talking about PvP multiplayer, the mod simply does not support the idea from the design standpoint with abilities that would be broken to hell in such environment.

"Also, considering there are so many BR games out there already, with some good luck the project would land 3 players peak. It just sounds like so much trouble for so little result. PvE / Co-op would have been more feasible, however I'm currently directing my attention to another project."
