In February of this year we announced the development of our new flagship game maker, GameGuru MAX, aiming for a release date in September. Many of you have joined us on our journey chronicling the progress of the development and we hope you have enjoyed watching the software evolve. We had hoped to release a Beta for mid-September to kickstart backward compatibility testing but, for reasons best described as 'excessive optimism', we have fallen short by a few weeks and found ourselves with a choice to make.
We could release on the 30th September with the best version of what we have now, or give ourselves more time and produce a more finished product. We are happy that we managed to get terrain, water and multi-grass in at the 11th hour but, after a long discussion with the team, we unanimously decided to release our stable Beta on the 30th September and extend the release date of our Steam Early Access version to the 1st December 2020.
This effectively gives us two months dedicated to Beta testing of the product and an opportunity to make sure the software gets the polish and attention it deserves, including solid backward compatibility support and a robust editor and games engine.
We have also decided to switch permanently to live broadcasts to deliver our development progress reports, so you get up to the minute news and an opportunity to ask questions during the Beta phase. As usual, we will be hosting them every Wednesday at 4PM BST.
It is understandable that there will be some disappointment; having to wait an additional 2 months before you can get your hands on the finished article. However, it was not an easy decision to make and the additional time in testing will result in an even better game maker. In the meantime, of course, we will be releasing regular Beta builds for all pre-order users and we are happy to extend the pre-order discount to cover the Beta testing phase.
We believe there is an opportunity to bring to the world a game maker that not only simplifies the process of creating FPS games but produces games that both look and play great. By opening up game creation to non-coders and non-artists we hope to attract more people into taking up the challenging and highly rewarding art of making games and it's a great comfort that when they do arrive, they'll have an amazing community of enthusiasts to help them along.
To celebrate the impending release of GameGuru MAX, we thought it would be a good idea to give you a taste of game making by giving away the original software GameGuru Classic this weekend. You can claim your free GameGuru Classic by visiting Steam and searching for GameGuru or visiting the Give Away Of The Day website and obtaining your Steam Key from there.
GameGuru Classic was originally released in 2015 and during its time on Steam has seen thousands of additions to the product, not least its massive collection of free game-making assets, which few competing game-makers can match.
When we announced the development of its successor, GameGuru MAX, we declared that support for GameGuru Classic would continue; providing for the needs of 32-bit users on lower-end systems, and we are happy to reaffirm that decision in the month we release our new product. As a more tangible gesture, last month we released our Autumn Fixes update, fixing issues and making the small additions reported in our GitHub Issues Board, a valuable conduit between developer and community.
We have developed the GameGuru technology in such a way that any bugs we fix for GameGuru MAX can be applied easily to GameGuru Classic, ensuring those core aspects such as the scripting system and game mechanics remain aligned as we release updates. Naturally, the products are distinguished in terms of asset management, graphics engine used, and other new technologies, but the ideology remains the same, that of making the art of game-making that little bit easier.
So from all of us at TheGameCreators we wish you a great weekend and as always, happy game-making!
With the September launch date for GameGuru MAX in sight we can reveal more detail about our planned release of GameGuru MAX. It's been a crazy development ride over the last few months and, as the new Wicked graphics engine started bedding down, we saw rapid progress as functionality was restored across multiple parts of the engine.
For those lucky enough to have pre-ordered, you will have enjoyed some of the Alpha builds we released as development continued. To continue in this vein, we are now happy to reveal that we will shortly be starting the Beta phase, which will boast near-complete functionality of the software and a real chance to start making some test games with the new product.
We have stuck pretty close to the features outlined on the GameGuru MAX pre-order page and look forward to delivering a much-improved game maker for your future game-making projects. Fear not GameGuru Classic devotees - as previously announced we will continue to provide fixes and functionality improvements to GameGuru Classic for as long as the community requires but, as you can imagine, we are most excited about what GameGuru MAX brings to the table and look forward to seeing what you will be making running up to Christmas.
One small change to the final deliverable is related to the Oculus Quest support. At the time of making our plans the only way to run on Oculus Quest was to have an Android Player that ran the entire GameGuru game as a compressed and reduced export. This turned out to degrade pretty much every facet of the game experience due to the limited power of the hardware on the Quest. Since then, Oculus has launched the Oculus Link and full support for OpenXR, which means you will be able to play the FULL PC experience on your Oculus Quest device instead of a cut-down version.
If you have not been following our latest announcements and you are a pre-order user it's definitely worth checking out Alpha Build 5 as it's a great version to start playing with GameGuru MAX. Also, check out the latest Sneak Peek Videos which reveal some of the great progress we have made over the last month.
Watch out for further updates on the Beta release as we head towards the launch of GameGuru MAX!
We are delighted to announce the release of the Autumn fixes update for GameGuru Classic, which fixes all new bugs reported in the issues board since the May Fixes update. As you may remember, the May update fixed every single bug reported up to that point, and the Autumn Fixes update does the same thing up to the present moment.
Here are some of the fixes that you will find in the update:
Optimized entity memory resulting in much less memory being used in your level
Sound effects can now reach zero volume for when you want to script your sound to silence
Fixed seamless textures in EBE structures so they are once again seamless
Fixed issue with the draw call optimizer having problems with multi-textured entities
Fixed crash caused in the "May Fixes" update related to the testgamemode
Fixed ray casting of active entities and use of the intersect against static entities
Fixed issue of 'save standalone' pausing progress
Restored multiplayer to working condition
Fixed a paste sprite issue causing the rendering on-screen to lag
Title script now amended to determine correct folder for loading in title music
We also answered two bug reports that needed information rather than actual code changes. This brings the official bug count of GameGuru Classic back to zero, demonstrating our commitment to continue working on GameGuru Classic functionality for as long as the Classic community requires.
Development continues at full speed on GameGuru MAX, the successor to Classic, and we are looking forward to sharing more progress as we head towards the release date. As planned, we have merged our codebases so that some tweaks during MAX development make their way back to the Classic product, and bug fixes on either product benefit both products.
We are pleased to announce the release of GameGuru MAX Alpha Build 5, which introduces the new Character Creator, Structure Editor, and Importer, as well as improved entity management.
Feel free to watch the Sneak Peek video which goes over some of the features of Alpha 5.
