An important message from the Cities: Skylines team,
We have an amazing modding community and greatly appreciate the dedication and helpful nature that’s been at the center of it for 7 years. Recently, there have been concerns in the community about reports of malware on the Steam workshop, which we want to address.
We recently banned a few mods from the Cities: Skylines Workshop and want to clear up some of the misinformation surrounding these mods. The mods in question, which have been banned, are “Network Extensions 3” and “Update from Github.”
No keyloggers, viruses, bitcoin mining software, or similar has been found in mods on the Steam Workshop.
“Network Extensions 3”, the mod alleged to contain malware, was banned due to discriminating against specific Steam users. First, it blocked a short list of Steam users from using the mod, but this was later changed to cause what appeared to be buggy gameplay. Blocking users or creating specific restrictions for them violates the Steam Subscriber Agreement and such resulted in the mod being banned.
The mod “Update from Github” was removed shortly after appearing on the Workshop. This mod was designed to check for and install updates to mods directly from Github, making changes to existing Workshop subscriptions without the user's knowledge. This bypasses the Workshop entirely, and to avoid potential abuse (such as downloading malicious software) the mod has been removed.
“Harmony (Redesigned)” has been mentioned in this context, however, the mod has not been updated since March 15th, 2021. Further updates to this workshop item are not possible as the account is banned and contributors are unable to update workshop items.
In short:
No keyloggers, viruses, bitcoin mining software, or similar has been found in mods on the Steam Workshop.
The mod “Network Extensions 3” was banned due to a violation of the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
The mod “Update from Github” was removed as a potential risk, and only affected ~50 users.
The “Harmony (Redesigned)” mod available on the Steam Workshop has not been found to contain the code to automatically update mods outside the Workshop.
If you come across any concerning mods, reuploads of banned mods, or mods containing the same/similar code, please report them using the report button on their workshop page.
Thank you for the reports on the random Service Vehicle Selection tool causing an error. We're currently working on a fix and aim for a hotfix patch next week.
We appreciate your patience while we work on fixing this and thank you so much for your understanding!
Welcome to Chirper Airlines, we have successfully taken off. You can now take off your seatbelt, adjust your seats and enjoy the latest Cities: Skylines Airports Expansion!
As we prepare for the release of the Airports - the new expansion for Cities: Skylines, we will be updating the System Requirements to play Cities: Skylines here on Steam.Â
This updated information does not imply any specific changes happening with this particular release; instead, we are making this update to reflect seven years of development on the game, and making sure that we are listing specifications that are relevant to today’s hardware market - as some of the original requirements are no longer available.
Overall, you will not experience any noticeable performance change if you are already playing Cities: Skylines - this is information that is relevant to new players.
We cannot wait to bring Airports, the Content Creator Packs, and the Radio Stations to you, and we look forward to seeing what you will build with all the new content!
Hello to all my fellow city-builders! True to tradition every new expansion comes with a free patch full of goodies for everyone, and this one is no exception. Following the theme of creative freedom and customization, we have a few new features for you, as well as an update to how planes behave. So let’s dive in!
Improvements to PlaneAI
Airports presented a great opportunity to improve how planes behave. We have added more variation in how planes select a path, which leads to the use of multiple plane stands, not just for the new Airport Areas, but also the existing airports. And if you’ve ever encountered the bug causing airplanes to endlessly circle above your airport, you will be happy to know that it is fixed.
But it isn’t just the planes that have had their behavior updated, as the improvements also affect other public transport options bringing in passengers from outside connections. Beyond passenger and cargo planes, passenger ships and trains coming in and out of the city are less frequent, but have a higher passenger count when arriving, reducing unnecessary traffic.

Replace trees on roads
You can now replace trees on roads and pedestrian paths with any tree available in the game! To do so simply go into the Landscaping menu and find the tree you want to use, select it and click on a tree-lined network already placed in your city to apply the new tree. This is done per segment, so you can customize the networks you want with the many different trees. And the best part is this is free since the cost of trees is already included in the cost of the network!
And speaking of trees, the free patch includes 14 new trees by MrMaison everyone gets to enjoy and use! From palm trees to pines to grasses and bushes, there’s something for every map!
Enjoy the shade of your favorite tree
Buy or sell soil
While we’re in the Landscaping category let’s look at some changes to how soil works! You still use and store soil as you landscape the terrain, but we have added an option to buy or sell soil making landscaping, and also creating Airport Areas, easier. No more running out of soil and having to dig a hole, or creating a mountain just to dispose of excess soil! Just click the new button in the Landscaping Info View active when landscaping or creating Airport Areas.
Buy or sell soil to finish your landscaping project easily
Service Vehicle Selection
Pairing nicely with the new vehicles by bsquiklehausen is the option to select which city service vehicles can spawn for Healthcare, Deathcare, Fire Department, Police Department, and Garbage. This is set per service building and the menu for this can be found by opening the respective service building’s Info Panel. The button to change vehicles is found in the bottom right, but it’s only visible if there is more than one vehicle to choose from.
This doesn’t just work with the Content Creator Pack, but any custom vehicles you may be using.
Pick your favorite vehicle or let the game randomize them all
As we prepare for the release tomorrow please ensure your seat is in an upright position and direct your attention to the patch notes below. Thank you for choosing Cities: Skylines Airports.

Greetings city-builders! Are you ready for another Dev Diary? This one is loaded with goodies and stocked full of information about Cargo Airport Services!
When your airport reaches level 3 you unlock the Cargo Airport buildings and roads, which include the Cargo Airport Terminal, Cargo Aircraft Stand, Medium and Large Cargo Airport Roads, and the Airport Cargo Train Station. In keeping with our goals of modularity and creative freedom, you can add these to existing airports or create one specifically for cargo air traffic.
Cargo Aircraft Stands work slightly differently than the passenger stands in that they can be placed alongside any road and do not require a connection to a terminal to function. This means you can simply add a Cargo Aircraft Stand along a road and connect it to your existing runway using taxiways and you are able to ship cargo in and out of your airport!
Expand your airport to accept cargo air traffic
However, while the Cargo Aircraft Stand might be all you need to receive cargo planes, it doesn’t make for much of a cargo airport! That’s where the Cargo Airport Terminal comes into play! It can be added to an existing Airport Area creating a dedicated point of departure and arrival for cargo traffic, or it can be the main terminal in its own Airport Area. As airport levels are tied to passengers and attractiveness, a dedicated cargo Airport Area will remain level 1 however.
Only cargo trucks are allowed through the terminal
The Medium Cargo Airport Road and the Large Cargo Airport Road are wide roads with utility buildings separating the lanes. These can be used to extend the Cargo Airport Terminal or as roads in your city, and are able to handle a good amount of traffic. The Large Cargo Airport Road even has a wide area for loading and unloading, making it ideal for high volumes of industrial traffic.
And last but not least is the Airport Cargo Train Station which features 4 train tracks making it ideal for cargo transfers between different areas of your city. Don’t let the name fool you though! It’s placeable anywhere in your city, so it’s a great option for those areas where the regular Cargo Train Station just can’t keep up with the train traffic.
Distribute cargo throughout your city with the Airport Cargo Train Station
New Maps
Whether you’re looking to build a city profiting from substantial industry or focused on tourism, Airports comes with three new maps featuring large open areas making them ideal for airports!
First on our list is the tropical Asanu Beach, which features a long stretch of wide beaches and an undisturbed lagoon perfect for tourism! But if that isn’t your kind of city, the lush jungles have much more to offer and could be a bustling metropolis or profitable industrial venture.
Asanu Beach with its sandy beaches and lush jungles
Heading to the temperate regions we find Hanami Bay at the mouth of two rivers and plenty of land to expand to - whether you want to move inland or take advantage of the bay’s many islands is up to you!
Hanami Bay benefits from its long coastline
If you long for colder destinations, then Noyou Port might just be the place for you! It’s wide-open spaces are ideal for any city and the rivers carved into the landscape through the eons offer beautiful scenery.
Noyou Port is rich in both natural beauty and open space
And with that, we’ve reached the end of the line for this Dev Diary! With Airports almost ready to ship, we have just one thing left to cover: The free update coming to everyone on the 25th of January! Monday at 4 PM CET / 7 AM PST we cover the new features and updates, including the patch notes so you are up to date with everything!
