Cities: Skylines - CO_Avanya
Hello to all my fellow city-builders! True to tradition every new expansion comes with a free patch full of goodies for everyone, and this one is no exception. Following the theme of creative freedom and customization, we have a few new features for you, as well as an update to how planes behave. So let’s dive in!

Improvements to PlaneAI
Airports presented a great opportunity to improve how planes behave. We have added more variation in how planes select a path, which leads to the use of multiple plane stands, not just for the new Airport Areas, but also the existing airports. And if you’ve ever encountered the bug causing airplanes to endlessly circle above your airport, you will be happy to know that it is fixed.

But it isn’t just the planes that have had their behavior updated, as the improvements also affect other public transport options bringing in passengers from outside connections. Beyond passenger and cargo planes, passenger ships and trains coming in and out of the city are less frequent, but have a higher passenger count when arriving, reducing unnecessary traffic.

International Airport with multiple planes parked

Replace trees on roads
You can now replace trees on roads and pedestrian paths with any tree available in the game! To do so simply go into the Landscaping menu and find the tree you want to use, select it and click on a tree-lined network already placed in your city to apply the new tree. This is done per segment, so you can customize the networks you want with the many different trees. And the best part is this is free since the cost of trees is already included in the cost of the network!

And speaking of trees, the free patch includes 14 new trees by MrMaison everyone gets to enjoy and use! From palm trees to pines to grasses and bushes, there’s something for every map!

Enjoy the shade of your favorite tree

Buy or sell soil
While we’re in the Landscaping category let’s look at some changes to how soil works! You still use and store soil as you landscape the terrain, but we have added an option to buy or sell soil making landscaping, and also creating Airport Areas, easier. No more running out of soil and having to dig a hole, or creating a mountain just to dispose of excess soil! Just click the new button in the Landscaping Info View active when landscaping or creating Airport Areas.

Buy or sell soil to finish your landscaping project easily

Service Vehicle Selection
Pairing nicely with the new vehicles by bsquiklehausen is the option to select which city service vehicles can spawn for Healthcare, Deathcare, Fire Department, Police Department, and Garbage. This is set per service building and the menu for this can be found by opening the respective service building’s Info Panel. The button to change vehicles is found in the bottom right, but it’s only visible if there is more than one vehicle to choose from.

This doesn’t just work with the Content Creator Pack, but any custom vehicles you may be using.

Pick your favorite vehicle or let the game randomize them all

As we prepare for the release tomorrow please ensure your seat is in an upright position and direct your attention to the patch notes below. Thank you for choosing Cities: Skylines Airports.

Greetings city-builders! Are you ready for another Dev Diary? This one is loaded with goodies and stocked full of information about Cargo Airport Services!

When your airport reaches level 3 you unlock the Cargo Airport buildings and roads, which include the Cargo Airport Terminal, Cargo Aircraft Stand, Medium and Large Cargo Airport Roads, and the Airport Cargo Train Station. In keeping with our goals of modularity and creative freedom, you can add these to existing airports or create one specifically for cargo air traffic.

Cargo Aircraft Stands work slightly differently than the passenger stands in that they can be placed alongside any road and do not require a connection to a terminal to function. This means you can simply add a Cargo Aircraft Stand along a road and connect it to your existing runway using taxiways and you are able to ship cargo in and out of your airport!

Expand your airport to accept cargo air traffic

However, while the Cargo Aircraft Stand might be all you need to receive cargo planes, it doesn’t make for much of a cargo airport! That’s where the Cargo Airport Terminal comes into play! It can be added to an existing Airport Area creating a dedicated point of departure and arrival for cargo traffic, or it can be the main terminal in its own Airport Area. As airport levels are tied to passengers and attractiveness, a dedicated cargo Airport Area will remain level 1 however.

Only cargo trucks are allowed through the terminal

The Medium Cargo Airport Road and the Large Cargo Airport Road are wide roads with utility buildings separating the lanes. These can be used to extend the Cargo Airport Terminal or as roads in your city, and are able to handle a good amount of traffic. The Large Cargo Airport Road even has a wide area for loading and unloading, making it ideal for high volumes of industrial traffic.

And last but not least is the Airport Cargo Train Station which features 4 train tracks making it ideal for cargo transfers between different areas of your city. Don’t let the name fool you though! It’s placeable anywhere in your city, so it’s a great option for those areas where the regular Cargo Train Station just can’t keep up with the train traffic.

Distribute cargo throughout your city with the Airport Cargo Train Station

New Maps
Whether you’re looking to build a city profiting from substantial industry or focused on tourism, Airports comes with three new maps featuring large open areas making them ideal for airports!

First on our list is the tropical Asanu Beach, which features a long stretch of wide beaches and an undisturbed lagoon perfect for tourism! But if that isn’t your kind of city, the lush jungles have much more to offer and could be a bustling metropolis or profitable industrial venture.

Asanu Beach with its sandy beaches and lush jungles

Heading to the temperate regions we find Hanami Bay at the mouth of two rivers and plenty of land to expand to - whether you want to move inland or take advantage of the bay’s many islands is up to you!

Hanami Bay benefits from its long coastline

If you long for colder destinations, then Noyou Port might just be the place for you! It’s wide-open spaces are ideal for any city and the rivers carved into the landscape through the eons offer beautiful scenery.

Noyou Port is rich in both natural beauty and open space

And with that, we’ve reached the end of the line for this Dev Diary! With Airports almost ready to ship, we have just one thing left to cover: The free update coming to everyone on the 25th of January! Monday at 4 PM CET / 7 AM PST we cover the new features and updates, including the patch notes so you are up to date with everything!

Good afternoon passengers, and welcome aboard this Dev Diary headed for the creation of your very own City Airline. The team has prepared a handful of refreshing screenshots for you today, which can be found throughout this post.

At level 3 your airport has become significant enough to be the base of operations for an airline. With the Airline Headquarters Building, a Unique Building found in the Airport Area menu, you can found your very own airline, and customize the name, logo, and planes! All you need to do is place the building somewhere in your city - it can be in the Airport Area or anywhere you like.

Airline Headquarters are essential to founding your own airline

Once in your city, the Airline Headquarters Building unlocks the Airline tab in the Airport Area Info Panel - this tab can also be reached by selecting the Airline Headquarters Building and clicking the Airline Info button. Here you can change the name of your airline, choose a logo from the 6 options and set the main color of your aircraft fleet, as well as change the ticket price.

Customize the look of your airline

Having an airline in your city not only gives tourism an additional boost, but it also provides you with an additional income to help offset the cost of running your airport. Low ticket prices add to the Airport Area’s Attractiveness, while a high ticket price can make it slightly less attractive for tourists. Balance the Attractiveness right and you’re able to earn a sizable profit from your airline!

About one-third of planes using the airport will be from your airline

An airline is unique to the city, so you can only have one, even if you have multiple Airport Areas in the city. Any changes made to the airline from one Airport Area Info Panel will be applied to all areas.

Aviation Museum
Another Unique Building available once your airport reaches level 3 is the Aviation Museum, also found in the Airport Area tab under Public Transport. This old aircraft hangar now houses historical planes and teaches citizens and tourists alike about the history of aviation. As a Unique Building, it adds to your City Attractiveness and helps attract more tourists to your city!

Must visit for aviation fans from near and far

That concludes today’s Dev Diary! We’re excited to see what airlines will end up in your cities and hope you enjoy taking control of your airport’s economy. Next up we look at Cargo Airport Services and how they tie into Airport Areas - that’s Thursday at 4 PM CET / 7 AM PST.

Cities: Skylines - CO_Avanya
Welcome back to the second Airport Dev Diary! Today we invite those of you looking to create large airports to the front of the line as we begin this Dev Diary concerning Airport Progression and Public Transport Links.

Next level airports
A level 1 airport is comparable to the base game airport - it’s a basic connection to the outside world - but with a lot more flexibility in terms of layout. It consists of a terminal, at least one plane stand and a runway with connecting taxiways, and can accept small planes. Decorative buildings are available and needed for the airport to level up, unlocking larger planes, more buildings and additional connections to the city.

Airport Areas can be compact like the regular airport - but expanded when your city’s needs grow

To reach level 2 your airport needs to service 500 passengers and have an Attractiveness Score of 200, which is reached by placing decorative buildings in your airport. Decorative buildings have their own menu filter and can be hotels, hangars and parked planes. Once your airport reaches level 2 you unlock the medium plane stand and your airport can start receiving medium planes, which can carry more passengers. Furthermore, you unlock large terminals, more decorative buildings, and integrated metro in the form of Concourse Hubs and the Elevated Airport Metro Station.

Decorative buildings make your airport more attractive

Level 3 is the highest level your airport can reach and requires 5000 passengers and an Attractiveness Score of 1000, but in turn unlocks not only large planes, but also cargo planes, the Airport Train Station and the Airline Headquarters Building, which lets you found your very own airline - more on that in the next Dev Diary!

Once an airport reaches a level, it cannot be lost even if you make changes to the airport. However, any new area created in the city will always start out as level 1. And yes, that means you can have multiple Airport Areas in your city if you want!

A well-established airport

Link to the city
Among the new airport buildings are options for integrated bus, metro, and train so you can easily connect your new airport to the rest of your city - or create shortcuts within your airport if it spans a large area!

The Airport Bus Station is available from level 1 and can be placed anywhere along the concourse network. It has 11 available stops for buses making for a perfect opportunity to use the two new buses! The Articulated Airport Bus is able to carry 50 passengers, while the Doubledecker Airport Bus can transport up to 60 passengers, making them ideal for busy routes headed into the city!

New bus options connect your city to the airport

When your airport reaches level 2 you unlock metro connections in the form of Large Terminals, the Elevated Airport Metro Station and Concourse Hubs. Like the bus station, they connect directly to the concourse network, but do not need a road connection! Simply connect them to your metro network and set up a line carrying passengers between your airport and the city. Keeping with the theme we added an Airport Express Metro, which can be selected using the vehicle selector when viewing the line details.

Don’t miss your flight with the Airport Express Metro

At level 3 you are able to build the Airport Train Station. This modern ground station is placed along the concourse network and does not require a road connection either. You just connect the train tracks to your city and set up a train line. We also included an Airport Express Train, which can be selected from the Line Info Panel to add more variation to your train lines!

Integrated train station makes long distance travel in the city even easier

We’ve arrived at the end of this Dev Diary and hope you have enjoyed what we had for you today. Monday at 4 PM CET / 7 AM PST we take a closer look at the Airline Headquarters Building, which unlocks at level 3 and lets you set up your very own airline!

Cities: Skylines - CO_Avanya
Greetings city-builders! I hope you’re ready for another round of Dev Diaries as we prepare for the release of Cities: Skylines - Airports, the expansion that was announced on the 10th of December 2021! If you haven’t already, check out the trailer here or watch it below.

Cities: Skylines Airports is an expansion in which you design your own airport and grow it from a small local transit point to a massive international hub buzzing with life. It’s modular, using special concourse networks to connect each building, which allows for a lot of creative freedom and flexibility, meaning you can build an airport in many different shapes and sizes to fit your city!

Airports expansion lands in stores on the 25th of January and to ensure a smooth arrival we have prepared these Dev Diaries covering each new feature, so please sit back and enjoy!

Shape your airport to fit your city

Create your Airport
Airports use the Area Tool which can be found in the Districts and Areas menu, and becomes available when your city reaches Milestone 4. It works very similar to Districts and other Area Tools with one exception: It flattens the ground and removes trees in preparation for your airport, adding a landscaping cost and affecting the amount of soil available to you. The 3 new maps added in Airports feature a lot of suitable, but more on those in a later Dev Diary.

The Airport Area tool prepares the terrain for your airport

Once you are satisfied with the area, it’s time to start actually building your airport! All the items you need are in the Public Transport menu under the new Airport Area tab. A functional airport needs a terminal building, a plane stand, and a runway, and taxiways connecting the plane stand to the runway. The Airport Area has a handy checklist alerting you to anything you’re missing to get your airport going!

Go through your checklist before takeoff

The first thing your new Airport Area needs is a terminal. Once placed it unlocks the additional buildings and the concourse, runway and taxiway networks needed to create your airport. Concourse networks serve as a connection between terminals and plane stands, which are placed along the concourse.

Next, the airport needs a runway for planes to land and take off. It works differently than most networks as it has both a minimum length and cannot be extended after placing it, so make it as long as you want it right away. Taxiways connect the runway and the plane stands in a one-way loop.

A modular airport in its simplest form

Choose your style
There are 3 different styles you can choose from when building your airport: Classic, Modern and Ultra Modern. Each style has 3 different sizes of terminal buildings, a concourse network, a control tower and a concourse hub with built-in metro for those very large airports, and all 3 style options are available at level 1.

An airport can have multiple terminal buildings, which function as different entry and exit points for citizens. This lets you expand your airport as it grows, with different terminals able to handle different amounts of traffic. For a busy airport you might want to use the 2 story terminal option, which splits arrivals and departures and has a dedicated lane for buses and taxis to drop off or pick up passengers.

Pick your favorite style or mix all of them in one airport

Airport Info Panel
Selecting the Airport Area name or using the Airport Area Info button after selecting a terminal brings up the Airport Info Panel, which shows all the relevant information for your airport: Level, passenger count, attractiveness score, income and expenses, and much more.

The Airport Area Info Panel gives a quick overview of your airport

Like most public transport you will find an airport to be a costly investment with little direct income. Instead, it brings in tourists to your city, who visit attractions and commercial buildings, adding to your income. And the attractiveness of the airport also increases the City Attractiveness, which helps bring in even more tourists!

The Policies tab lets you apply area-specific policies, like Hotel Discounts, which gives your airport a direct increase in attractiveness, Great Maintenance, which adds a Land Value bonus to the whole airport, and Car Rentals, which encourages tourists to use cars but may cause increased traffic.

With the basics of creating an Airport Area covered, we come to the end of this Dev Diary. We hope you enjoyed this first look at Cities: Skylines Airports, which arrives in stores on the 25th of January, and don’t forget to check in on Friday at 4 PM CET / 7 AM PST when we explore Airport Levels & Public Transport Links!
