If you missed the AMA - Misfits Attic is back (well, Tim is, and Jeremy part time :) So we wanted to update you on the current plan (*subject to change)
We're updating the Mac builds to work with the new (and old) OS versions
We're updating the game with all of the fixes in Decavoid's unofficial patch
We're looking into adding achievements in a respectful way that won't impact immersion (especially for new players)
We're prototyping three ideas for our game #3, one of which could be a "spiritual successor" to Duskers
The Longer
Game #3
We're planning on creating Misfits Attic game #3. I thought long and hard about a sequel to Duskers or DLC. Every evolution of the game I came up with just felt like it didn't fit perfectly with Duskers. So what I came up with is more of a "spiritual successor". That said, I like to prototype 3 game ideas - and then pick the best. So Jeremy and I are working on those, but in the meantime we wanted to update Duskers for all the amazing fans that have kept exploring derelicts. (Note: I created a Developer Page if people wanna follow us)
Duskers Mac
For starters, current mac OS's stopped working with the old build, so we wanted to bring those players back into the fold if we could, and I think we have that build (currently in the default branch).
Decavoid's patch
The community member Decavoid took it upon themselves to create a patch that addressed some outstanding bugs with the game. So we thought, why not hire Decavoid to integrate those changes (and possibly others) into the base game? So we did :) While "bug fixes" isn't the sexiest of changes, we know they can be frustrating so we wanted to eliminate as many as we can. It also does add some features.
Achievements
We're a really small team right now, so it's hard to bring in new content while we prototype game #3, so we're looking for ways we can add to the experience without opening up a can of worms. Some of the community has asked repeatedly for achievements. Our reservation with this was that it would break the deep immersion of the game (same reason there is no soundtrack). That said, others were confused by the somewhat open-ended nature of the games narrative, unsure if they had "completed" all of the storylines. While we don't adore putting up borders around the games world, it seems like we could add an achievement at the end of each storyline, as well as one when all the storylines are completed. These are deep enough into the game that they likely wouldn't egregiously break immersion and they could supply some level of closure to players.
There's also the opportunity to put some achievements in the game to create new gameplay scenarios, a bit like how we did them in A Virus Named TOM. These would, in theory, be intentionally achieved, and wouldn't pop up when a new player is immersed in the world (this is precious to us because of all the stories we hear from fans about turning off the lights in their basement, putting their headphones on, and really imagining themselves in a cockpit).
That's all for now (I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves), and thanks to all of you that have been amazing members of this community of scavengers <3
Thanks to all those that helped test on the future branch, we were able to fix a few things and we're now confident enough in the new Mac build to push it to the default branch (read: Everyone gets this by default). We hope that this will be smooth for all our players on Mac (newer and older OS's). Would love to hear if it's working or not! You should see the game re-download/update. Those that hopped to the future branch can hop back to default :)
If it doesn't work, please try to exit Steam and restart to make sure you're getting the update. Then let us know if you're able to get your Dusking on :) Worst case scenario, you can get back to the pervious version by going to the "past" branch (just go to Duskers in your library, right click [two finger or control-click] and select properties -> Betas, then choose "past" from the dropdown. You should see the game re-download/update.)
Hopefully if this goes well, we'll update the Steam store to make the Mac version available for purchase again :D
So we hope we have a new Mac version of Duskers that will run on the newer and older OS's. Would love if our Mac players could give it a try. I just pushed it to the "future" branch on Steam. Just go to Duskers, right click (two finger or control-click) and select properties -> Betas, then choose "future" from the dropdown. You should see the game re-download/update. Then just try to play :)
If it doesn't work, please try to exit Steam and restart to make sure you're not getting the old "future" branch. Would love to hear if you're now (or if on an older OS - still) able to get your Dusking on :) ...or not :(
In the years since the original Hackerjam took place, when Extensions were first released, the community has gotten better and better at exploring the mechanics of Hacknet, and telling stories with it's tools. After all this time, the quality of work that's come out of Hackerjam v2 is amazing. Since I've been busy with my new game (Wrestledunk Sports), I got some help from Hacknet community moderator Spiderbenb with judging.
Matt: Flagged leans hard into Hacknet's strengths, and really shines as an example of design, writing and style that all hit a really high level of quality. It doesn't stop at just being good though - it's clever use of mechanics and scripts is surprising and deeply satisfying. If you've been wanting a new DLC for Hacknet - this is basically it. You should play it.
Spider: The level of detail that was put into the mechanics was fascinating. It has it's own set of rules and will even punish you if you break those rules. Even though Flagged leaves you on a cliffhanger, I found myself asking when more will be added to it. It was very satisfying to play through, and very quick to pick up on.
Matt: Kwiper comes out swinging again! This is a wildly creative extension, and invents completely new mechanics with the very limited scripting that Hacknet has available. It's so fresh and interesting, while still having great fundamentals. So impressive!
Spider: This extension does not hold your hand in what you need to do, but the detail that's in this extension alone is impressive. You have to solve murders by uploading clues to a server, and everything get's updated to include those clues. It's a fantastic extension with new mechanics to play around with and I hope more will come to it soon.
Matt: More than any other extension on this list, HeartBeat made me feel the way that I wanted players to feel when I was designing the original game. While it has some small problems with difficulty, guidance, and progression for the player, nothing beats the sensation of trying to get just a tiny bit more information out of a loop before you have to reset, scratching down notes and passwords on a piece of paper. Really creative, and well designed, I highly recommend it.
We couldn't decide on just one third place though, as these two were both so good, so:
Spider: At it's very core, it's a Visual Novel. There's not very many of these on the workshop, but this one stood out amongst them all. If you enjoy reading as much as anyone else does, this one is for you. The writing is very well put together, with minimal errors. I can't wait to see if Taro will do more with this.
Matt: Both Dans La Mer Du Son and HeartBeat will receive the full 3rd place prize each.
Spider: HEXA was created by Ohana, and was also the first extension I played through. It's a very basic Extension but provides you with a working Jukebox that you can utilize on a few missions. As well as a Hardmode if you feel like the first playthrough wasn't punishing enough. Still a good time though.
Matt: I thought it was going to be impossible to top Shirt Review, but Aqua's got the goods in serious extensions too. This was a really excellent entry, that got a bit unlucky not to place by going up against other entries like Flagged that were hard hitters too. It's a really interesting take on AIs and digital sentience, and has great mechanics to back it up!
Spider: Who We Are was made by EnderFriend284 and tells the story of you waking up in the year 2489 and finding an unknown entity in your systems. It's a very interesting idea on A.I. and gives it a nice twist that's fun to play through.
That's the list!
Spider: To everyone else who created an extension for HackerJam 2, you've all done an amazing job and you should be proud of yourselves. Good job everyone, and thank you for joining in for Hackerjam 2!
Matt: Amazing work everyone! It's so impressive to see what everyone came up with - the extensions are so exciting and inspiring to me, and I'm so grateful for what they add to the game. Thanks so much to everyone that entered, and congratulations to the winners! You're all amazing!
Hackerjam v2 is on now! After the amazing results of the first Hackerjam - a community event for creators to make Hacknet extensions (mods/custom campaigns), I've decided to run another one!
Feel like you could make a cool story or interesting experience with Hacknet's style and mechanics? This is your time!
