Rocket League

Rocket League‘s enormous success was long overdue. I liked this game back in 2008, but it didn’t seem to catch on until they chopped a few words out of the name. The weight of those extraneous syllables lifted, the game launched into the stratosphere, almost like some kind of supersonic acrobatic rocket-powered battle-car.

Psyonix aren’t resting on their laurels, either. The game still commands enormously huge audiences worldwide, so it’s no surprise that they’re working hard on polishing up just about every eSports feature the game could ask for. The centerpiece of the next major patch, due early next month, is Tournaments, allowing players to organize a jet-assisted kick-around using just a handful of in-game menus.

Rocket League®

Psyonix has announced that Rocket League's highly anticipated Tournament Update, which introduces a new Tournament Mode among other things, will launch on April 3rd.

It's due to arrive on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, and includes a sizeable number of quality of life improvements and additions, alongside tournaments.

A fully fledged Tournament Mode was first touted last September, when Psyonix explained that it was "something we've wanted for Rocket League since our launch". In-game Tournaments, it said, would let players compete in competitions without ever needing to leave the game client.

Rocket League’s next major update is coming your way early next month!

Our Tournaments Update, known previously as the ‘Spring Feature Update’ in our Roadmap blog, arrives on Tuesday, April 3 (pending first-party certification). Our new Tournaments system, which some of you took for a test drive earlier this month on Steam, is the cornerstone of our first Feature Update of 2018, allowing you to create and join in-game tournaments, restrict entry into tournaments by minimum and maximum Competitive Rank, and more!

We have plenty in store for you in the Tournaments Update on top of organized competition within the client, including a number of additions and improvements asked for by our community:

  • Additional ways to sort, filter, and organize your item inventory
  • Equipping specific Painted Car Bodies to Orange and Blue
  • Expanded Team Chat options
  • In-game Connection Quality Status indicators
  • Performance improvements and additional graphics settings for Rocket League on Nintendo Switch

...and there’s more where that came from, including fresh in-game music from our friends at Monstercat and the new ‘Triumph’ Crate! We’ll have full details on everything in the Tournaments Update in our Patch Notes next month.

After reading through all of the feedback we received from the Tournaments Beta, we’re also determining what’s going in the “V2” version of Tournaments, which we hope to release later this year.

We’ll have more information on some of the additions and improvements coming with the Tournaments Update -- including details on Chat Bans and revisions to our Code of Conduct -- over the coming weeks. Stay tuned and we hope to see you joining a few brackets next month!

Though snow is still piled up on my street corner, Rocket League is ready for this winter hell to be over and today launched its Spring Fever event. This brings lots of colourful new cosmetic items to adorn sports cars with, including sprinkled doughnut wheels, a fluffy dandelion, and some fantastic floral trails and goalblasts. It looks wildly at odds with the futuresport’s Hot Wheels aesthetic, and that’s great. (more…)
